To blend photos in Canva, add both images to the same design, arrange their layer order, and adjust the top image’s transparency. For a clean subject-on-new-background composite, use BG Remover, refine the cutout, then adjust the foreground or background to help them match. Canva documents these building blocks rather than a single dedicated “Blend Photos” tool.

What “blending photos” means in Canva

Photo blending can describe several different effects:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Overlay: One complete photo sits above another.
  • Transparency blend: The upper photo becomes partly see-through so both images remain visible.
  • Cutout blend: The background is removed from a subject, which is then placed over a different scene.
  • Gradient fade: A gradient or translucent shape softens the boundary between two images.
  • Double exposure: A portrait and a landscape, texture, or cityscape are stacked to create an artistic merged image.
  • Collage: Photos are arranged in frames or grids. This combines images visually, but it is not a seamless blend.

In practice, a natural Canva blend comes from combining layering, transparency, and image adjustments.

The fastest way to blend two photos

Use this method when you want both photos to remain visible, such as a soft background overlay or double-exposure-style graphic.

  1. Open or create a design. Add two photos to the same Canva design.
  2. Arrange the layers. Select an image and use the available position or layer controls to put it above or below the other image.
  3. Crop and position. Move and scale the photos so their focal points fall where you want them.
  4. Adjust transparency. Select the top image and use the Transparency control in the editor toolbar to make both images visible.
  5. Harmonize the images. Open Edit and use Adjust to tune brightness, contrast, saturation, or other available settings. Depending on the controls available, Adjust can target the whole image, a selected area, foreground, or background.
  6. Refine and export. Check the crop and placement, then download the result or continue using it in your design.

Canva’s photo editor and toolbar can change over time. Its Help Center notes that tools previously grouped under Effects have moved into Tools, Filters, or Shadows. If a control is not where expected, select the photo and check the editor’s available tools.

How to create a double-exposure effect

A double exposure works best when one image has a recognizable silhouette and the other provides texture or atmosphere.

  1. Choose a high-contrast portrait or subject photo.
  2. Choose a landscape, cloud, architecture, paper texture, or city image with shapes that complement the subject.
  3. Place both images on the canvas and test which one should be on top.
  4. Lower the transparency of the upper image until the subject remains recognizable.
  5. Use Adjust to harmonize the foreground and background, or apply similar filters to both images.
  6. Add a background color if it helps strengthen the silhouette.
  7. Crop around the focal subject and leave negative space if text will be added.

This is a design recipe using Canva’s layering, transparency, and image-adjustment tools—not a claim that Canva provides a dedicated double-exposure button.

How to blend a subject into a new background

Opacity alone can make two rectangular photos look muddy. To place a person, product, or object naturally into a new scene, remove its original background first.

  1. Select the subject photo and choose BG Remover from the editor toolbar.
  2. Let Canva process the background, then inspect the cutout.
  3. Use the erase and restore brushes to correct the edges. Zoom in and move around the image for finer brush work.
  4. Place the cutout over the destination image or background, then scale and move it to fit.
  5. Use Adjust to tune the foreground or background separately so the layers sit together more naturally.
  6. Download as PNG if you need to preserve transparent areas around the cutout.

Canva says Background Remover is included with paid plans. Its Help Center says it works on photos under 9 MB; photos above 10 MP are downscaled to 10 MP after removal, and vector images are not supported. Automatic removal may need edge cleanup. See Canva’s Background Remover help and Background Remover feature page.

How to create a soft fade between photos

For a gradual transition rather than two equally visible images, combine transparency with a gradient or translucent shape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the two photos on separate layers.
  2. Put the photo that should fade on top and reduce its transparency.
  3. Add a gradient or translucent shape over the transition area.
  4. Choose colors that match the nearby parts of the photos.
  5. Lower the shape’s transparency until it softens the boundary without covering important detail.
  6. Use the layer controls to keep the gradient above the photos but below text and logos.

Canva’s Help Center describes solid colors, gradients, images, videos, and AI-generated backgrounds. Adding or changing a background is unavailable in Canva Docs. See Canva’s background instructions.

Canva mobile instructions

In the Canva app, open or create a design and add both photos through the upload or media controls. Select the image that should be on top, then look for Transparency in the editing toolbar or its overflow menu. Use the position or layer controls if the images are stacked incorrectly.

Toolbar placement and labels can vary as Canva updates its editor. If you cannot find a control, select the individual photo and check the available editing tools and menus.

Which blending method should you choose?

Goal Best method Limitation
Quick two-photo effect Layering plus Transparency Can look washed out or cluttered
Subject over a new scene BG Remover plus layering Paid-plan access; fine edges may need cleanup
Double exposure Overlay, transparency, adjustments, and cropping Requires careful contrast
Soft transition Transparency plus a gradient or shape Requires manual positioning
Clean photo arrangement Frames or grids Creates a collage, not a seamless blend

How to make the result look natural

  • Choose photos with compatible lighting and color temperature.
  • Align horizons, faces, or strong diagonal lines where possible.
  • Make one image clearly dominant and use the other as support.
  • Avoid placing two detailed faces directly over one another.
  • Crop competing details before reducing opacity.
  • Use Adjust to harmonize the foreground and background.
  • Use a plain or gradient background when the blend becomes muddy.
  • Keep the main subject at the highest contrast.
  • Check the design at thumbnail size to see whether the focal point survives.

Canva features and access

Canva’s documented workflow uses the editor’s layering, transparency, and image-adjustment controls to blend photos. The research does not establish access terms for every editor control, so check your account if a tool is unavailable.

Background Remover is included with paid plans according to Canva’s Help Center. If the option is missing, confirm your account’s access and check whether team brand controls restrict editing. Canva says some advanced features may be plan-limited.

Magic Layers can turn eligible flat images into editable layers, but it is not the primary method for realistic photo compositing: Canva warns that photo-realistic images may not separate cleanly. Canva lists support for single-page PNG and JPG images and exclusions including PDF, vector graphics, and multi-page documents. See the Magic Layers help page.

Troubleshooting common Canva blending problems

Problem What to try
Transparency is missing Select the individual photo and check the available toolbar controls and menus. Some advanced features may be plan-limited, or editing may be restricted by team brand controls.
The image looks muddy Make one image dominant, crop competing detail, or use Adjust to harmonize the layers.
Two rectangles look unrelated Remove one background, align key lines, add a gradient at the boundary, or use one photo as a subtle texture.
The subject disappears Increase contrast, restore some opacity, choose a clearer background, or reduce detail behind the subject.
Background removal leaves rough edges Zoom in and use erase and restore brushes around the subject’s edges.
Background removal will not process the image Check that it is a photo under 9 MB; vector images are not supported. Canva says photos above 10 MP are downscaled to 10 MP after removal.
The downloaded PNG has a solid background Remove solid background layers and choose PNG if you need to retain transparency. Canva’s feature page describes downloading a PNG with a transparent background.

Exporting the finished blend

Choose a suitable download format for how you will use the design. If you need transparent areas around a cutout, download as PNG and check the available transparent-background options. A flattened composite can be exported without transparency when the background is part of the finished design.

Canva’s photo editor instructions describe downloading an edited photo. Check the selected design size and download settings before exporting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Usage rights and privacy

Editing a photo inside a Canva design is different from downloading and redistributing an isolated stock asset. If you use Canva media for advertising, merchandise, logos, resale, or other commercial work, check the current Canva Content License Agreement and the specific asset’s terms. Use portraits, client images, and uploaded commercial photography only when you have permission to edit and publish them.
