Cara’s reported growth from 40,000 to 650,000 users in one week was a June 2024 surge, not a current user count. TechCrunch attributed the figures to Cara founder Jingna Zhang and linked the influx to artists’ concerns about Meta’s AI policies and the use of public posts in AI training. Cara offered an artist-focused social and portfolio platform with a stated policy against hosting AI-generated portfolios, but its tags do not guarantee that images cannot be scraped elsewhere.
What is Cara?
Cara is a social network and portfolio platform aimed at artists and people who love art. It combines portfolio presentation with a social feed, giving artists a place to share work and connect with an art-focused community.
Cara was already an artist-oriented platform before the June 2024 surge. TechCrunch described it as combining Instagram-like portfolio presentation with a microblog-style feed and reported that it was available on web and mobile.

Cara says it filters generative-AI images and will not host AI-generated portfolios unless ethical and privacy concerns about datasets are resolved through regulation. Its FAQ says NoAI tags are applied to uploaded images by default. These are Cara’s stated policies and technical labeling practices, not proof that outside parties cannot copy or scrape public images.
Why did artists suddenly move to Cara?
The immediate context was concern about Meta’s plans to use public content from European users in AI training. Artists objected to the prospect that public posts could be used in AI development without affirmative permission, and some were frustrated by the process for objecting.
Several concerns came together:
- Consent: Artists questioned whether posting work publicly should mean it could be used in AI development.
- Style imitation: Artists worried about generative systems producing work that resembles recognizable artistic approaches.
- Economic concerns: Some creatives feared generated imagery could compete for attention or work.
- Platform dependence: Artists relied on large platforms for discovery but wanted alternatives with policies more aligned with their concerns.
- Word of mouth: Artists encouraged followers to join Cara, bringing attention to a platform already focused on art.
The June 2024 reporting connected Cara’s sudden growth to this backlash. It does not establish how many people left Meta, how many were active on Cara, or how many stayed after registering.
How large was Cara’s growth?
TechCrunch reported on June 6, 2024 that Cara grew from 40,000 to 650,000 users in the preceding week, citing founder Jingna Zhang. Treat this as a contemporaneous reported figure, not an independently audited count or a measure of active users.

Cara later published other scale figures: one post reported more than one million users, 4 million posts and 5 million images, while another FAQ reported 1.5 million users. These are separate platform claims without comparable update dates in the available research, so they should not be combined into a definitive current user count.
What did Meta say about AI training?
Meta’s June 10, 2024 announcement concerned public content from users in Europe. Meta said it planned to use public posts and comments to train AI models, while excluding private messages between friends and family and content from European users under 18. The Associated Press reported that Meta offered European users a form to object.
This was a dated European policy context. It should not be generalized to every Meta user, region, or product, nor does it establish that any particular artist’s image was used or produced a particular AI output.
Meta said publicly shared European content could help its models better understand regional languages, cultures and social trends. That is Meta’s stated rationale, not an independent finding about the effects of training.

What does Cara promise about AI?
Cara’s About page says it filters generative-AI images and does not agree with generative AI tools in their current form. Its FAQ says NoAI tags are applied to uploaded images by default. Cara also says it will not host AI-generated portfolios unless dataset ethics and privacy concerns are resolved through regulation.
These are the platform’s stated policies. They distinguish Cara’s approach from a general social platform, but do not establish that images are impossible to copy, scrape or use by parties who disregard technical signals.
Does posting on Cara stop AI scraping?
No. Cara’s default NoAI tags communicate a preference to systems that recognize or respect them, but the available evidence does not establish that they prevent external scraping or model training. Publicly viewable images can still be copied by people or services that ignore those signals.
Artists should treat the tags as one part of a broader approach to sharing work, not as a guarantee of technical or legal protection. Maintaining original files and sharing only the versions appropriate for public display can help manage exposure, but does not make public work immune from misuse.

Is Cara an alternative to Instagram?
Cara can be an alternative for artists seeking a community centered on art and a platform with a stated policy against hosting AI-generated portfolios. Instagram serves a broader audience, while the available research does not establish that Cara matches its reach, commercial potential or ability to help artists find clients.
| Consideration | Cara | Instagram and Meta |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Artist social network and portfolio platform | Broad social platform |
| AI policy in the cited sources | States that it filters generative-AI images and will not host AI-generated portfolios pending resolution of dataset ethics and privacy concerns | Meta’s June 2024 European announcement described plans to use public content, with stated exclusions |
| Audience | Art-focused community | Broader general audience |
| Scraping protection | Default NoAI tags are a signal, not a guarantee against external scraping | The cited evidence does not establish a guarantee against external scraping |
| Career outcomes | Potential venue for portfolio sharing and networking; the research provides no outcome data | Potential access to a broad audience; the research provides no comparative outcome data |
Artists can use Cara for art-focused discovery while keeping other channels for audiences and clients who are not active there. A platform’s community focus does not by itself guarantee commissions, sales or career growth.
What are the practical limitations of a fast-growing platform?
Cara’s own finance post describes operating strain and moderation pressure following growth. The post says pre-surge hosting and development services cost about $2,000 a month and reports later totals of 4 million posts and 5 million images. These are platform-reported figures, not independently audited measures.
Rapid growth can increase demands on image hosting, moderation, engineering and support. The available research does not establish specific outages, retention rates or current operating costs, so those should not be inferred from the surge alone.

Who might benefit from joining Cara?
Cara may be worth considering for artists who want an art-focused social network, a portfolio presence, and a platform whose stated AI policies align with their preferences. It may be less suitable as a sole channel for artists who depend on broad general-audience reach or need proven client-conversion results.
A practical approach is to use Cara as one channel, keep a portfolio or contact method under your control, and maintain ways to reach people outside specialist art communities.

Why are artists moving to Cara?
The June 2024 surge followed concern about Meta’s plans for AI training using public European content. Artists also sought an art-focused platform with policies they viewed as more aligned with their concerns.

Cara is described as a social network and portfolio platform for artists and people who love art. The available sources do not limit it to digital artists.
