Dream Prompter brings cloud-based Gemini image generation and editing into GIMP 3 as a third-party plug-in. It can generate a new image, edit an existing one, accept reference images when the selected model supports them, and return the result as a new GIMP layer.
There is an important update to older coverage: Dream Prompter originally connected directly to Google’s Gemini API, but its current repository describes a Replicate-based, multi-model workflow. That means you generally need GIMP 3, Python, the plug-in, a Replicate account, and a Replicate API key—not simply a Google Gemini key.

This guide explains what Nano Banana means now, how to install and use Dream Prompter, which limitations matter for painting and production work, and when another workflow makes more sense.
What is Nano Banana?
Nano Banana is Google’s informal name for Gemini’s native image-generation and image-editing capabilities. It is not a separate desktop application. Gemini can accept text, images, or both, then generate a new image or modify an existing image through natural-language instructions.
The name now covers several model generations, so “Nano Banana” is not precise enough by itself:

Google’s current recommendations position Nano Banana 2 as the general-purpose balance of speed, quality, and cost, Nano Banana 2 Lite as the economical option, and Nano Banana Pro as the choice for more demanding work. Model names, availability, pricing, and limits can change, so check Google’s current image-generation documentation before choosing a model.

What is Dream Prompter?
Dream Prompter is a community-made, open-source GIMP plug-in. It is not an official Google or GIMP product.
The original project connected GIMP directly to Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model. The current repository describes a different architecture: Dream Prompter uses Replicate’s API and exposes multiple providers and models, including Google’s Nano Banana family as well as models from other vendors.
Its practical features include:
- Text-to-image generation
- Natural-language editing of an existing image
- Reference-image workflows, depending on the selected model
- Automatic insertion of results as new GIMP layers
- Automatic layer naming
- Access to several image models through one plug-in
- GIMP 3.0 or later compatibility, according to the repository
The plug-in solves a workflow problem rather than making AI image generation local. Instead of exporting from GIMP, opening a browser, downloading a result, and importing it again, you can submit the request from GIMP and continue compositing when the returned image arrives.

“Inside GIMP” describes the interface, not the location of the computation. Your prompt, source image, and any reference images are sent through the cloud service used by the plug-in. With the current documented setup, that means Replicate and the selected model provider.
Dream Prompter therefore does not provide offline generation or automatic privacy. Before using it with a painting, client asset, medical image, unreleased design, or proprietary reference, check your contract, organizational AI policy, and the provider’s current terms.
What can you do with Dream Prompter?
Useful painting and design tasks include:
- Replacing a portrait background while preserving the subject
- Removing or adding an object
- Creating alternate product or artwork backgrounds
- Generating a new visual in an empty GIMP project
- Combining several references into a concept
- Trying a style transformation before manually refining it
- Producing several composition drafts
- Generating foliage, clouds, props, environmental textures, or other visual elements
The result can be brought into a layer-based workflow for masking, blending, painting over artifacts, color correction, and compositing. That is the main attraction for GIMP users: AI generation becomes one step in an existing painting workflow instead of a separate browser session.

Do not assume that a GIMP 2.x installation will work. GIMP 3 uses different plug-in and Python arrangements, and the documented target for Dream Prompter is GIMP 3.
The repository’s model notes list image-format and file-size limits that vary by model. For example, its notes list Nano Banana with PNG, JPEG, and WebP input and a 7 MB per-image limit. Newer models may allow larger files or higher resolutions. Verify the limit for the exact Replicate model selected rather than treating one model’s limit as universal.
How to install Dream Prompter
Use the current repository README as the final authority if its installation instructions change.
1. Install the Python dependency
The repository lists:
pip install replicateOn Windows, your system Python may not be the Python environment used by GIMP. If the plug-in cannot import replicate, install it with the interpreter associated with your GIMP installation or use the appropriate python -m pip command for that environment. A successful installation into an unrelated system Python will not fix the plug-in.

2. Copy the plug-in into GIMP’s profile
After downloading and extracting Dream Prompter, rename the extracted folder exactly:
dream-prompterThen place that folder in the plug-in directory for your GIMP profile.
Linux
~/.config/GIMP/<version>/plug-ins/dream-prompter/Replace <version> with the installed version, such as 3.0 or 3.2.
Linux Snap
~/snap/gimp/current/GIMP/<version>/plug-ins/dream-prompter/Windows
%APPDATA%GIMP<version>plug-insdream-prompterOn Linux, confirm that the plug-in files have the permissions required by your GIMP installation. On macOS, the correct profile location can vary with the installation method and GIMP version; use GIMP’s plug-in search path and the current repository instructions rather than copying a Windows or Linux path.
3. Restart GIMP and find the command
Fully close and reopen GIMP. The expected menu location is:
Filters → AI → Dream Prompter...Menu placement may differ between releases. If it is missing, check the troubleshooting section below and confirm that the plug-in was copied into the profile used by the running GIMP version.
Generate a new image in GIMP
- Start GIMP and open an existing project or create a new image.
- Open Filters → AI → Dream Prompter…, or the equivalent location in your release.
- Choose Generate.
- Enter a descriptive prompt.
- Add reference images if the selected model supports them.
- Choose a model.
- Submit the request and wait for the provider to return an image.
- Review the result as a new layer.
- Rename, mask, blend, paint over, or discard the generated layer.
A useful first prompt for a painting project might be:

Edit an existing image
- Open the source image in GIMP.
- Select the image or layer you want to use.
- Launch Dream Prompter.
- Choose Edit.
- Describe the change and what must remain unchanged.
- Add reference images if the selected model supports them.
- Submit the request.
- Compare the returned layer with the original.
- Use a layer mask or selection to limit the visible change.
For a background replacement, use language such as:
Using the provided image, replace only the background with a quiet coastal landscape at sunset. Keep the person’s face, pose, clothing, skin tone, silhouette, and proportions unchanged. Match the original lighting, perspective, color temperature, and depth of field.For an object addition:
Add a small ceramic vase on the table to the right of the existing objects. Match the scene’s perspective, light direction, contact shadow, color temperature, and painterly texture. Do not alter the existing objects or crop.These instructions can reduce unwanted changes, but they do not guarantee pixel-level preservation. Generative editing may alter details outside the requested area. A returned layer makes it easier to compare and mask the result; it does not turn the operation into a native, reversible GIMP adjustment.
Prompting for better edits
Google’s image-editing guidance supports a simple structure:
Using the provided image, replace [specific element] with [desired result]. Keep [subject and composition] unchanged. Match the original lighting, perspective, color temperature, and depth of field.For localized changes, state the boundary explicitly:
Only change the background. Do not alter the person’s face, pose, clothing, hands, skin tone, or lighting.For multiple references, identify each one instead of saying only “combine these images”:
Use reference 1 for the subject’s silhouette, reference 2 for the architectural setting, and reference 3 for the color palette. Create one coherent composition with consistent scale, perspective, lighting, and brush texture.Prompts work best when they describe the intended result and the constraints that matter. They cannot replace manual inspection. Check faces, hands, text, logos, repeated patterns, edges, shadows, and small objects at 100% zoom.
Which Nano Banana model should you choose?

Dream Prompter’s current model list is controlled by the plug-in and Replicate rather than by Google’s direct API alone. The exact model name, input limit, resolution, availability, and behavior can therefore depend on the Replicate model configuration. Treat the model selector and current provider documentation as more authoritative than an older screenshot.
Cost: Google billing versus Replicate billing
The plug-in itself may be open source, but image generation is not automatically free. With the current documented Dream Prompter route, you should expect Replicate billing for the selected model and usage. If you use Google’s API directly in another workflow, Google’s billing applies instead.

There is no reliable single “cost per GIMP edit.” The amount depends on the provider, model, input images, output resolution, token or image pricing, retries, and failed or repeated experiments.
Google’s current pricing page lists Nano Banana Pro output at approximately $0.134 for a 1K/2K image and $0.24 for a 4K image, alongside token-based input and output pricing. These figures are subject to Google’s billing model and current terms. Replicate prices are model-dependent and must be checked on the selected Replicate model page.
Before a large batch:
- Check which provider is billing the request.
- Review the selected model’s pricing and resolution.
- Set usage limits or alerts where available.
- Use a separate API key for team or client work.
- Remember that retries and exploratory variations can accumulate charges.
Privacy, rights, and production concerns
Do not upload restricted material simply because the plug-in appears inside a local editor. Images, prompts, and references can leave your computer for cloud processing.
For professional work, consider:
- Whether you have permission to upload the source and reference images
- Whether client contracts permit generative AI processing
- Whether the provider’s retention and training terms meet your requirements
- Whether metadata should be removed before upload
- How generated-image provenance and SynthID affect delivery
- Whether you need a record of the provider, model ID, prompt, date, and source images
- Whether model updates could change results later
Dream Prompter is also a third-party plug-in. Teams should audit its source and dependencies before deploying it in a controlled environment. It is not a substitute for an enterprise security review or a guaranteed support contract.

Layer behavior and image quality
A generated result inserted as a new layer is safer than overwriting the source: you can hide the result, compare it with the original, and apply a mask. But this is only qualified non-destructive editing. The AI operation itself is not a native GIMP adjustment layer that can be reopened and recalculated with every parameter preserved.
Expect to perform some cleanup. The returned layer may differ from the source in:
- Pixel dimensions
- Aspect ratio
- Color profile
- Transparency
- Alignment
- Fine detail and edge quality
Save an XCF copy before generating. Keep source layers hidden rather than overwritten, then scale, align, convert profiles, mask seams, and paint over artifacts as needed.
Troubleshooting
The Dream Prompter menu is missing
- Confirm that you are running GIMP 3, not GIMP 2.
- Check that the folder is named exactly
dream-prompter. - Confirm that it is inside the profile for the running GIMP version.
- Restart GIMP completely.
- Check GIMP’s plug-in search path and error console.
- On Linux, confirm executable permissions where required.
The plug-in cannot import Replicate
The package may have been installed into the wrong Python environment. Use the Python interpreter associated with GIMP, then verify the installation with that same interpreter. A successful pip install replicate in a separate system environment may have no effect.

The API key is rejected or requests fail immediately
Check that the key is present, active, and associated with the account used by the selected provider. Confirm that billing is enabled, the model is available to your account, and the provider dashboard shows no quota or account restriction.
The image format or size is rejected
Test with a small PNG or JPEG. Resize or re-export the source, and check the selected model’s current input-format and file-size limits. Do not assume that a limit documented for Nano Banana also applies to Nano Banana 2 or Pro.
The request times out or GIMP appears frozen
Check your network connection and provider status. Some plug-in builds may perform network work in a way that makes GIMP appear unresponsive. Do not overwrite the source while waiting. If the request fails, keep the original open and retry into a fresh layer.
The result is badly aligned or changes too much
Use explicit preservation instructions, compare the returned layer with the source, and apply a layer mask. Generative editing does not guarantee exact geometry or a pixel-level edit boundary.

A safety refusal can come from the provider or selected model. Check the provider’s response and try a permitted, more specific prompt. Do not repeatedly retry a request that violates the model’s policy.
Who should use Dream Prompter?

Alternatives
Use Gemini directly
Google AI Studio or Google’s direct API is simpler for testing the model without installing a GIMP plug-in. The trade-off is manual downloading and importing into GIMP.
Use Replicate separately
Replicate is the current documented provider route for Dream Prompter and offers access to several model families. It can be useful if you want to compare models through one service, but pricing, limits, and billing are model-specific.

Use a local image-generation workflow
Local generation avoids sending images to a cloud provider and can offer more control, but it usually requires model downloads, a capable GPU, more setup, and a different editing workflow. The available documentation does not establish one specific current GIMP-compatible local plug-in, so compatibility should be verified before committing to a tool.
Use a commercial editor
Adobe Firefly and Photoshop may provide more polished selection, masking, support, and asset-management workflows. They also introduce subscription costs and their own cloud-processing and licensing terms.
Keeping a reproducible workflow
Because providers and models change quickly, record the details for important work:
- GIMP version
- Dream Prompter release or commit
- Operating system
- Provider
- Exact model name and ID
- Date of generation
- Prompt and reference images
- Output resolution
- Any manual edits made afterward
This matters especially when revisiting a project months later. A prompt that worked with gemini-2.5-flash-image may not produce the same result with Nano Banana 2 or Pro, even if the friendly product name still contains “Nano Banana.”

Does Dream Prompter run locally?
