Yes—you can create long-exposure images with a Samsung Galaxy, but the best method depends on your phone and the effect you want. For the most control, open Camera → More → Pro, choose a slow shutter speed, use a low ISO, stabilize the phone, and trigger the shutter with a timer or remote.

Galaxy phones can also create long-exposure-style images with Motion Photo processing, while Night mode produces a related but different computational low-light result. Camera modes, shutter ranges, and Expert RAW support vary by model, lens, region, and One UI version.

Choose the right Galaxy feature first

“Long exposure” can mean three different things on a smartphone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Manual long exposure: Pro mode or Expert RAW keeps the shutter open for a deliberately selected time. This gives you control over water blur, light trails, subject movement, and brightness.
  • Computational long-exposure effect: A supported Galaxy records a short Motion Photo sequence and processes it into a still image with effects such as traffic trails.
  • Night-mode processing: Night mode combines or processes multiple frames to brighten a dark scene. It is not the same as manually selecting a 10- or 20-second shutter speed.
Desired result Best starting point Why
Car light trails Pro mode or Motion Photo Long Exposure Pro offers timing control; Motion Photo is faster and more automatic.
Silky waterfalls or waves Pro mode; Expert RAW if supported A manual shutter lets you choose how much texture disappears.
Handheld city night photo Night mode It is designed for a quick, brighter low-light image.
Intentional people or cloud blur Pro mode You decide how much movement is recorded.
Stars Expert RAW astrophotography, where supported The feature is designed for compatible premium Galaxy phones and requires stability.
Daytime long exposure Pro mode plus an ND filter or supported simulated ND Bright scenes can overexpose before a slow shutter creates enough blur.

Samsung documents the availability of camera modes and settings as model-dependent. See Samsung’s current Camera mode guidance before assuming your Galaxy has Pro, Expert RAW, or a particular lens option.

The reliable method: use Pro mode

1. Prepare a moving subject and a static frame

Long exposure works when something moves during the shot while something else remains still. Try traffic beside buildings, a waterfall with rocks, waves against a shoreline, clouds above a landscape, a Ferris wheel, fireworks, or people moving through a building.

Include a static reference—a bridge, building, tree, rock, or horizon—so the blur looks intentional rather than like camera shake.

2. Stabilize the phone

Use a tripod whenever possible. If you do not have one, place the Galaxy on a hard, stable surface and support it so it cannot slide or vibrate. Avoid soft bags, loose mounts, windy surfaces, and holding the phone in your hands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A tripod does not solve every problem: tapping the shutter, autofocus changes, wind, and moving subjects can still reduce sharpness. Use a two- or five-second timer, if available, or a compatible Bluetooth remote. Samsung lists timer and alternative shooting controls in its Camera settings guidance.

3. Open Pro mode

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Swipe to More if Pro is not visible.
  3. Tap Pro.

The exact location and labels can differ by Galaxy model, carrier software, region, and One UI version.

4. Choose a lens

Start with the main camera. It is often the cleanest option in low light, while a telephoto lens may be darker or noisier. Use the ultrawide lens for broad scenes when there is enough light and edge distortion is acceptable. Use telephoto only when the subject is sufficiently illuminated and that lens supports the controls you need.

5. Select a shutter speed

Tap the shutter-speed control, usually shown as a fraction or time such as 1/30, 1, 5, or 10. Use these as starting points:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 1/2–2 seconds: light movement in water, vehicles, or people.
  • 2–5 seconds: more obvious water smoothing and short light trails.
  • 5–15 seconds: pronounced trails, blurred crowds, and smoother water.
  • 15 seconds or longer: very dark scenes or specialized star work, if your model and mode allow it.

These are creative starting points, not universal Galaxy specifications. The available range depends on the model, lens, lighting, firmware, and camera app. Samsung explains the relationship between shutter speed and light in its Pro mode instructions.

6. Keep ISO low

Start with the lowest practical ISO, often around ISO 50 or 100 on supported devices. Lower ISO usually gives cleaner shadows, but it may require a longer shutter. Raise ISO only when the image is too dark or when you need a shorter exposure to preserve a moving subject.

ISO changes brightness and noise; it does not create the same motion rendering as a longer shutter. Do not assume every Galaxy offers the same minimum ISO.

7. Set focus deliberately

Autofocus may hunt in darkness or refocus between shots. Focus on a distant light or fixed object, then switch to manual focus if your phone provides it. For stars, adjust manual focus near infinity and test several positions. Do not focus on a dark sky, moving water, or a passing car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Set white balance when consistency matters

Auto white balance can change under mixed street lighting. A fixed setting can make a series more consistent. Tungsten can counter very warm streetlights; Daylight gives a neutral outdoor starting point; Cloudy creates a warmer landscape look. Treat these as creative starting points rather than rules.

9. Take a test exposure

Change one control at a time:

  • Too bright: shorten the shutter, lower ISO, use an ND filter, or recompose away from bright lights.
  • Too dark: lengthen the shutter or raise ISO.
  • Not enough movement: lengthen the shutter.
  • Everything is blurred: improve support, use a timer, and check for wind or mount vibration.
  • Clipped highlights: lower ISO, shorten the shutter, or protect bright areas.
  • Water is too smooth: shorten the shutter.

A longer exposure is not automatically better. The best duration depends on subject speed, ambient brightness, and how much texture you want to retain.

Starting recipes for common subjects

Traffic light trails

Use the main camera, low ISO, and begin around two to five seconds. Frame the road so the trails lead through the image, while buildings or a bridge remain sharp. Try 10–15 seconds for longer trails if streetlights and signs do not become overexposed.

Waterfalls

Use a tripod and start around 1/2–2 seconds for visible water texture. Try three to eight seconds for a smoother appearance. In daylight, use a physical ND filter or a supported simulated ND function. Watch white foam carefully because it can clip quickly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ocean and waves

Begin around one to four seconds. A low viewpoint can emphasize foreground movement, but avoid exposures so long that the entire surface becomes featureless. Wipe sea spray from the lens between attempts.

Moving people

Lock the phone on a static architectural composition and start around two to eight seconds. Some people may disappear, while others may appear translucent. Shorten the shutter when you want recognizable figures; lengthen it when you want a ghostly or nearly empty scene.

Fireworks

Use a tripod and timer. Focus on a distant light before the display begins, keep ISO low, and use a shutter long enough to record a burst without washing out the sky. Autofocus is unreliable in darkness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using Expert RAW

Expert RAW is useful when you want DNG/RAW files and additional editing latitude, but it is not available on every Galaxy phone. Depending on the device and software version, it may provide manual exposure controls, astrophotography, and specialized features such as simulated ND functionality.

  1. Open the Camera app and tap More.
  2. Choose Expert RAW, or install it from the Galaxy Store if your device supports it.
  3. Mount the phone securely.
  4. Adjust shutter speed, ISO, focus, and white balance.
  5. Save RAW/DNG when you intend to edit the image extensively.

Samsung describes Expert RAW and its editing workflow in its official Expert RAW overview. Samsung’s current feature discussion also describes astrophotography and ND-related functions on supported devices. Do not assume that installing the app adds capabilities unsupported by your phone’s hardware.

Expert RAW astrophotography

Use a tripod, a dark location, and complete stability. Select the astrophotography option and its available duration or setting. Expect a processed interpretation rather than an ordinary single-frame star photograph. It is especially useful for stars, not a replacement for Pro mode when photographing traffic or waterfalls.

Physical versus simulated ND

A physical ND filter reduces light optically and is useful for daytime water, cloud, and stream exposures. A simulated ND feature is more convenient but exists only on certain phones and software versions. In either case, confirm compatibility with your model, case, camera bump, and chosen lens.

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Turn on Motion Photo, if available.
  3. Photograph traffic or another scene with obvious movement.
  4. Open the result in Gallery.
  5. Look for the long-exposure or motion-effect option.
  6. Save the processed image as a separate file if prompted.

Samsung describes this process in its Motion Photo long-exposure explanation. The exact Gallery label and availability vary by model and One UI version.

This is not one continuous sensor exposure. It depends on the original Motion Photo and the phone’s software interpretation. The source Motion Photo may be disabled in very dark conditions, and the effect can be unpredictable with overlapping motion or camera movement.

When Night mode is the better choice

Use Night mode for a quick handheld photograph of a dark city or landscape when you want brightness and apparent sharpness without manually choosing exposure settings. It may combine or process several frames.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Pro mode instead when you specifically want visible light trails, deliberate movement blur, repeatable shutter timing, or control over whether moving subjects remain recognizable. A bright Night-mode image is not automatically a long-exposure photograph.

Composition matters as much as settings

  • Include a static object to anchor the blur.
  • Use roads, bridges, shorelines, and rails as leading lines for light trails.
  • Leave space in front of moving subjects.
  • Keep the horizon level.
  • Avoid placing intense streetlights directly in the frame when possible.
  • Use reflections in wet pavement or water.
  • Try vertical framing for waterfalls and tall trails, and horizontal framing for roads, bridges, and clouds.
  • Take several variations rather than trusting one exposure.

Fix common problems

Problem What to try
Pro mode is missing Check More, install pending camera or system updates, and verify that the model supports Pro mode. Otherwise try Motion Photo processing or Night mode.
Expert RAW is missing Search the Galaxy Store, update the app and One UI, and check compatibility. Use Pro mode if the phone is unsupported.
Image is blurry Use a tripod or hard surface, set a timer, remove loose mounts, avoid touching the phone, and determine whether the blur is camera movement or subject movement.
Scene is completely white Shorten the shutter, lower ISO, use an ND filter or supported simulated ND, and shoot in shade, at dusk, or at night.
Photo is noisy Lower ISO, use the main camera, add light, avoid excessive shadow lifting, and edit RAW carefully.
Moving subject disappears This is normal when a subject crosses the frame. Shorten the shutter, add light, or choose a higher-contrast scene.
Stars are streaked Shorten the exposure for ordinary stars, improve stability, or use supported astrophotography processing. Intentional star trails require a sufficiently long supported sequence.

Editing the result

JPEG or HEIF

  • Reduce highlights first.
  • Lift shadows cautiously.
  • Lower excessive saturation from colored lights.
  • Add contrast after recovering bright areas.
  • Apply noise reduction after exposure adjustments.
  • Crop distracting edges and correct white balance.

RAW or DNG

Adjust exposure, highlights, and white balance first. Then apply lens corrections if your editor supports the phone’s profile, reduce noise and chromatic aberration, and sharpen static details selectively. RAW preserves more editing information, but it usually looks flatter at first and requires more work. It is not automatically better if you do not plan to edit.

Samsung identifies Adobe Lightroom as a RAW editing option in its Expert RAW workflow.

Final checklist

  1. Choose Pro, Expert RAW, Motion Photo processing, or Night mode based on the effect you want.
  2. Use the main camera as your low-light starting point.
  3. Lock the phone on a tripod or hard surface.
  4. Start with low ISO and a deliberately chosen shutter speed.
  5. Focus on a fixed distant subject.
  6. Use a timer or remote.
  7. Protect highlights and change one setting at a time.
  8. Take several exposures and review both sharpness and motion rendering.
