Krita is the best free drawing app for most Mac users. It is open source, designed for digital painting, and includes brushes, layers, stabilizers, masks, animation tools, and broad file-format support. Choose FireAlpaca for a simpler interface, Inkscape for vector artwork, or GIMP when photo editing matters as much as drawing.
The important qualification is that “free” varies by app and download source. Some tools have paid Mac App Store editions, premium features, account requirements, or no Mac version at all.

- Freeware: FireAlpaca is free to use, but it is not open source.

- Paid Mac edition: Sketchbook Pro is a paid Mac App Store application, despite older articles often describing SketchBook as free.
- Not a Mac desktop app: Adobe Fresco’s current Apple listing identifies iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision compatibility rather than macOS desktop compatibility.
Also distinguish the developer’s website from the Mac App Store. Krita’s website version is free, while its Mac App Store version is paid; Krita’s documentation says the store version is functionally identical. GIMP says it does not provide an official App Store package, so an apparent App Store listing should be treated as third-party.
1. Krita: best overall
Krita is the strongest default choice for serious digital painting on a Mac. It is built around raster illustration rather than treating painting as an accessory to photo editing or page layout.

- Layers, blend modes, selections, transforms, masks, and non-destructive workflows.
- Brush stabilization for cleaner line work.
- Assistants, symmetry, canvas-only mode, and other illustration-focused tools.
- Animation support for frame-based work.
- Support for common image formats, including PSD, PNG, JPEG, and TIFF.
- No subscription or account requirement for the official website download.
That feature set makes Krita suitable for concept art, character illustration, comics, painting studies, and animation. It can still work for beginners, but the number of dockers, settings, and brush options can make the first session feel busy. Start with the default workspace and add complexity only when you need it.

Krita’s official pages currently list recent macOS support, but they show conflicting minimum-version information. Check the current Krita download page for the exact requirement before installing, especially on an older Mac. The current official materials also list 4 GB of RAM as a minimum and 16 GB as recommended; those are developer guidelines, not a guarantee of smooth performance with large canvases.
Apple-silicon versus Intel packaging should also be checked on the current installer page. Older Macs may need an earlier Krita release, obtained only from an official project archive where available. Large canvases, many layers, animation frames, and high-resolution brushes can require considerably more memory and graphics resources than a simple sketch.
Krita is primarily a raster application. If your work consists of editable paths, logos, icons, or artwork that must scale indefinitely without pixelation, Inkscape is a better fit.
2. FireAlpaca: best for beginners and lightweight sketching
FireAlpaca is the clearest alternative for people who find Krita’s interface intimidating. It offers a lighter, more approachable sketching and painting workflow and is particularly practical for simple illustrations and manga-style work.

The developer’s June 2026 download page lists FireAlpaca 2.16.0 for macOS 12 or later, with native Apple-silicon support. The developer describes it as freeware and says artwork made with it may be used commercially.
Its trade-off is depth. FireAlpaca does not offer Krita’s same breadth of advanced painting, masking, animation, and extensibility features. It is therefore a good starting point, not necessarily the tool you will want for complex production files.
“Freeware” also does not mean open source. The license for the application is separate from the rights attached to your artwork, imported fonts, textures, brushes, or other assets.
3. Inkscape: best for vector drawing
Inkscape is the right recommendation when drawing means creating logos, icons, diagrams, infographics, technical illustrations, lettering, or other scalable artwork.
Unlike a painting app, Inkscape is built around vector objects: paths, nodes, fills, strokes, shapes, and text. Vector artwork can be resized without the same pixelation associated with raster images. Its native focus is SVG, and the project is free and open source under the GPL.
Choose the correct Mac installer
Inkscape provides separate downloads for:
- Intel: for Intel-based Macs.
- arm64: for Apple-silicon Macs.
Download the matching DMG, open it, and drag Inkscape to Applications as described in the Mac installation guide. Choosing the wrong architecture can lead to launch or installation problems.
Inkscape is not a natural replacement for a brush-first app such as Krita. Users expecting pressure-sensitive painting, textured brushes, or a Procreate-like canvas may find its object-based workflow unsuitable.

4. GIMP: best for photo editing plus drawing
GIMP is a powerful free and open-source image editor. It is the better choice when your work combines drawing with photo retouching, compositing, selections, masks, color correction, and background removal.
GIMP can paint, use layers, and support many common image formats, but its organization is more image-editing-oriented than illustration-oriented. For a blank canvas and brush-first workflow, Krita is usually the more natural starting point.
The official download page lists GIMP 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026, for macOS 11 Big Sur or later, with separate Intel and Apple-silicon downloads. Requirements and releases can change, so confirm the current page before installing.
Download it from the official GIMP website. The GIMP project says it does not currently provide an official Apple App Store package and warns that store downloads are third-party.
5. MediBang Paint: a conditional choice for comics
MediBang Paint is relevant to manga, comics, and webtoon creators because its desktop materials advertise brushes, screentones, gradation mapping, onion-skin mode, and cloud-related functions.

MediBang’s official desktop page describes free functionality, account-related cloud features, and additional premium functions. However, the US Mac App Store listing showed a $49.99 price when checked. That price and availability can change, and other regions may differ.
If you want offline, account-free, open-source software, Krita or FireAlpaca is simpler. If you choose MediBang, verify whether you are downloading the developer’s desktop version or buying the Mac App Store edition, and check which brushes, materials, storage, and cloud features require an account or upgrade.

Apps often misclassified as free
Sketchbook Pro
Sketchbook Pro is a polished paid alternative, not a fully free Mac app. The US Mac App Store listing showed $24.99 when checked. It advertises customizable brushes, layers, guides, rulers, symmetry, PSD and TIFF support, flipbook animation, custom hotkeys, native Apple-silicon support, and macOS 12 or later.
It may suit someone who wants a focused sketching interface and is willing to pay once. It should not win a list of genuinely free macOS drawing apps.

Adobe Fresco
Adobe Fresco should not be included as a Mac desktop drawing app. The current Apple listing identifies iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision compatibility rather than a Mac desktop version. Its presence in Mac-oriented searches does not establish Mac support.

Check macOS first
Current application support is not the same as historical support. FireAlpaca’s listed macOS requirement is 12 or later, while GIMP’s listed requirement is 11 or later. Krita’s official pages currently require checking because their minimum-version information differs. An older Intel Mac may support the processor architecture but still fail the current macOS requirement.
Check Intel versus Apple Silicon
Processor architecture is a separate compatibility question. Inkscape explicitly offers Intel and arm64 DMGs, and FireAlpaca lists native Apple-silicon support. For Krita and other applications, follow the architecture information on the current official download page.
Use the right input device
A Mac drawing app does not turn a MacBook or iMac into an iPad. You can draw with a mouse or trackpad, but pressure-sensitive work generally requires a compatible pen tablet or pen display. Pressure depends on the exact hardware, macOS driver, connection method, and application configuration.
Do not assume an Apple Pencil can be used directly with a MacBook. Apple Pencil workflows are primarily associated with iPad hardware. If you buy a tablet, check the exact model’s current macOS and Apple-silicon driver support from the manufacturer.

Keep performance expectations realistic
A simple sketch can run comfortably on hardware that struggles with a large, high-resolution canvas containing hundreds of layers or animation frames. RAM, available storage, canvas dimensions, brush size, layer count, and GPU workload all matter. Published minimum requirements are starting points, not performance tests.
File formats, accounts, and offline work
PSD, PNG, JPEG, TIFF, SVG, and PDF do not behave identically across applications. Importing a format does not guarantee that every layer, mask, blend mode, effect, vector object, or text element will round-trip perfectly.
- Keep the original project in the application’s native layered format.
- Export a flattened PNG or TIFF when broad compatibility matters more than editability.
- Use SVG when preserving editable vector structure is the priority.
- Test a small copy of an important file before moving an entire project between applications.
Krita, FireAlpaca, Inkscape, and GIMP can support local workflows without making a cloud account the center of your project. MediBang’s cloud functions are more account-dependent. If you rely on cloud storage, check what remains accessible offline and after ending any premium service.
Commercial use and licensing
The software license and the rights to your artwork are different questions. FireAlpaca explicitly says artwork may be used commercially, but that does not automatically settle the rights for included brushes, fonts, textures, or imported assets. Open-source software also does not mean every bundled or downloaded resource is unrestricted.
Before selling work, review the license for any third-party materials used in it. Keep project files and proof of asset licenses when commercial ownership matters.
Which app should you install?
- Serious digital painting: Krita.
- A simpler beginner workflow: FireAlpaca.
- Logos, icons, diagrams, and scalable artwork: Inkscape.
- Photo editing with occasional drawing: GIMP.
- Manga, comics, or webtoons: Compare Krita and FireAlpaca; consider MediBang only after checking its edition, account requirements, and premium features.
- A polished paid sketching app: Sketchbook Pro, if a one-time Mac purchase is acceptable.

Several support PSD or other common image formats, but format compatibility is not perfect round-tripping. Keep the original native project file and test important layered documents before switching applications.
