For most Windows and Mac users, Affinity by Canva is now the strongest free professional alternative to Adobe Illustrator. It combines vector, photo-editing, and page-layout tools, and Canva announced that the new Affinity is free for everyone. However, it still requires a free Canva account and is not a guaranteed one-for-one replacement for every Illustrator feature.
If you need open-source software or Linux support, choose Inkscape. For live collaboration and UI design, choose Figma. Apple users focused on illustration may prefer Linearity Curve. The right choice depends on your platform, file formats, print requirements, and whether you need a desktop application or a browser-based tool.

| Tool | Best for | Platforms | Free model | File workflow | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Affinity by Canva | Professional illustration, branding, print, and mixed vector/raster work | Mac, Windows; iPad announced as coming soon | Canva says the new application is free for everyone; a free Canva account is required | AI, PDF, SVG, PSD, TIFF, IDML, and more | Not every Illustrator effect, plugin, or automation workflow transfers perfectly |
| Inkscape | Open-source vector design and Linux | Windows, macOS, Linux | Free and open source | SVG-first; PDF and other interchange formats available | Illustrator compatibility and some print features require careful testing |
| Figma | UI design, prototypes, design systems, and collaboration | Browser and desktop apps | Free plan with restrictions | Strong for digital design; SVG/PDF are safer interchange formats than AI | Not a full illustration or prepress replacement |
| Linearity Curve | Illustration on Apple devices | Apple-focused; verify current platform support | Free tier and paid features may apply | Vector illustration and common export formats | Not a universal Windows/Linux replacement |
| Corel Vector | Browser-based general vector editing | Browser-based | Current free-tier limits should be checked | Useful for SVG and common vector work | Storage, export, offline, or document limits may apply |
| Vectr | Simple logos, icons, diagrams, and social graphics | Browser-based | Current availability and restrictions should be checked | Basic vector graphics | Limited for complex typography, effects, and production work |
| Boxy SVG | Lightweight SVG editing | Browser, desktop, and app-store versions may differ | Verify the current version and pricing | SVG-focused | Not designed to duplicate Illustrator’s complete professional toolset |
“Free” does not always mean the same thing. In this guide, it can mean free and open source, free professional software, a restricted free plan, or a tool that is free only for a particular platform. A time-limited trial is not treated as a free Illustrator alternative.
1. Affinity by Canva: best overall
Affinity by Canva is the best starting point for most people who want a serious Illustrator replacement without an Adobe subscription. Canva says the new Affinity combines vector design, photo editing, and page layout in one application and is free for everyone. It launched for Mac and Windows, while the launch announcement described iPad availability as coming soon.

That combination makes Affinity the closest broad professional substitute in this list. It is a better fit than browser-first tools for layered illustrations, branding projects, large documents, and work that moves between vector and raster editing.
What Affinity does well
- Combines vector, photo, and layout capabilities in one application.
- Supports AI, PDF, SVG, PSD, TIFF, IDML, and other formats, according to Canva.
- Provides a more conventional desktop workflow for professional projects.
- Fits branding, illustration, marketing artwork, and many print-oriented tasks.
- Reduces the need to subscribe to separate applications for different parts of a design.
Canva also says that Affinity work is stored locally and that Affinity content is not used to train Canva AI. Those are statements from Canva’s own product information, not an independent audit. A free Canva account is required to activate or download the application, so it is not completely independent of an account ecosystem.

Affinity should not be described as a perfect replacement for every Illustrator feature. Illustrator plugins, scripts, Creative Cloud Libraries, agency templates, linked assets, and specialized handoff conventions may not have direct equivalents.
Affinity’s ability to open an AI file also does not guarantee perfect editability. Test files containing live effects, symbols, variable fonts, masks, clipping paths, appearance attributes, transparency, and linked images. The safest approach is to duplicate the original file and test a representative copy before changing your production workflow.
Choose Affinity if: you use Windows or macOS and want the broadest professional desktop replacement without paying for an Adobe subscription.
Look elsewhere if: you need Linux, Illustrator-specific plugins, or a completely account-free workflow.

2. Inkscape: best open-source alternative
Inkscape is the clearest choice if “free” means free forever, open source, and independent of a commercial subscription. It is also the strongest option for Linux users because it is a native desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Inkscape’s native workflow is SVG-based. That makes it particularly useful for logos, icons, diagrams, web graphics, laser-cutting designs, plotting, and other projects where SVG is an appropriate source format. It includes tools for Bézier paths, node editing, shapes, gradients, text, tracing, patterns, and boolean operations.
Why choose Inkscape
- No subscription, trial expiration, or paid account is required.
- Runs natively on Linux as well as Windows and macOS.
- Offers a substantial path, node, shape, text, gradient, and tracing toolkit.
- Works well for SVG-first web, icon, and open-design workflows.
- Can be adapted and extended through its open-source community ecosystem.
Where Inkscape differs from Illustrator
The interface and defaults may take time to learn, especially for someone coming directly from Illustrator. Illustrator-specific effects and appearance settings may not survive an import unchanged.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
AI compatibility is conditional. Illustrator files generally need PDF-compatible data saved inside them for more reliable opening. A complex or non-PDF-compatible AI file may fail to open or may lose editability. Even when the artwork looks correct, inspect text, masks, gradients, clipping paths, transparency, and layers.
Print production also needs caution. CMYK workflows, spot colors, overprint, trapping, color management, and PDF standards should be tested against the printer’s requirements rather than assumed to match Illustrator.

3. Figma: best for collaboration and UI design
Figma is a vector-capable collaborative design platform, not a traditional Illustrator clone. It is the best choice here for interface design, wireframes, prototypes, design systems, web graphics, and teams that need several people to edit, review, comment on, or prototype the same file.
Figma’s strengths are shared files, components, responsive layouts, prototyping, and browser access. A design team can work together without passing local files back and forth, and stakeholders can comment in the same environment.
Figma’s strengths
- Real-time collaboration and commenting.
- Strong tools for interfaces, components, design systems, and responsive layouts.
- Easy browser-based sharing.
- Useful prototyping features for web and product teams.
- Good fit for digital products and screen-based graphics.
Why Figma is not a complete Illustrator replacement
Figma is not the first choice for advanced illustration, traditional prepress, elaborate path effects, sophisticated typography, or large print-production files. AI compatibility should not be assumed; SVG or PDF is generally a safer route for moving artwork into Figma.
Its free plan also has limits that can affect projects, team libraries, version history, and administration. Check the current Figma pricing page before relying on a particular feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBecause Figma is browser-first, account access, internet availability, browser memory, organizational policies, and cloud-storage preferences matter. It is a poor fit for someone who requires a fully offline, local-first production environment.
Choose Figma if: your work is primarily UI, web, product, or collaborative digital design.
Look elsewhere if: you need Illustrator-style illustration, advanced print controls, or offline professional production.
4. Linearity Curve: best for Apple-focused illustration
Linearity Curve, formerly associated with Vectornator, is designed around Apple-oriented illustration workflows. It is a strong candidate for Mac, iPad, and iPhone users who want a modern interface for vector illustration, icons, branding graphics, and social content.
Its touch and tablet orientation can be a meaningful advantage for illustrators who prefer drawing directly on an iPad. It may also feel more approachable than a traditional desktop application for people who are new to vector tools.
What to verify before choosing it
- Current support for the Apple devices you use.
- Whether the features you need are included in the free tier.
- Export limits, cloud synchronization, storage, and AI features.
- Whether your Illustrator files import with acceptable fidelity.
Linearity Curve should not be presented as a universal Windows or Linux replacement without current first-party confirmation. It is also not automatically the best option for commercial prepress or complex agency handoff.

Choose Linearity Curve if: you use Apple devices and prioritize illustration or tablet-based work.
Look elsewhere if: you need Linux, broad platform coverage, or a proven production workflow for complex Illustrator files.
Check the current Linearity pricing page for the active free-plan terms.
5. Corel Vector: best browser-based general vector editor
Corel Vector is the current destination associated with the former Gravit Designer product. It is aimed at users who want a browser-based vector editor with a more conventional illustration focus than a presentation tool.
It can suit logos, icons, basic illustrations, and web graphics without requiring a large desktop installation. Browser access also makes it convenient when you move between supported computers.
The important qualification is that the current free tier must be checked before relying on it. Storage, export formats, offline access, document size, and account requirements may vary. Do not describe Corel Vector as unlimited or fully offline without confirming those details on the live product page.
AI import and complex Illustrator compatibility should be treated cautiously. SVG or PDF is generally safer for interchange, and browser performance may become a limitation with very large or highly complex files.
Choose Corel Vector if: you want a browser-first tool that is more focused on vector drawing than general presentation design.
Look elsewhere if: you need unrestricted offline work, Linux-native software, or guaranteed Illustrator-level compatibility.
6. Vectr: best for beginners and simple graphics
Vectr is a straightforward browser-based tool for simple logos, icons, diagrams, social graphics, and basic illustrations. Its relatively simple learning curve makes it useful for first-time vector users who do not need the full complexity of a professional design application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Vectr is appropriate for basic shapes, text, and uncomplicated compositions. It is less suitable for advanced typography, complex path editing, color management, sophisticated effects, or demanding print production.
Because the product’s availability, monetization, and restrictions can change, confirm whether the current version is fully free, ad-supported, freemium, or subject to storage and export limits. A simple design that looks fine on screen should still be tested as an exported PDF before being sent to a commercial printer.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →7. Boxy SVG: best lightweight SVG editor
Boxy SVG focuses on SVG rather than attempting to reproduce every part of Illustrator. That focus makes it useful for icons, web assets, simple illustrations, and cleaning up or editing SVG files.
A focused SVG editor can be preferable when you do not need page layout, extensive effects, or a large application. It is a practical choice for web designers and developers who mainly need to create or adjust scalable vector assets.
Check the current availability and pricing for the browser, desktop, and app-store versions because they may not offer identical capabilities. Treat AI and EPS support cautiously, and prefer SVG or PDF when exchanging artwork. Boxy SVG is not the right choice for advanced prepress, large illustration projects, complex typography, or elaborate effects.
Choose Boxy SVG if: your work is primarily lightweight SVG editing.

For professional desktop design
Choose Affinity if you use Windows or macOS and want the broadest combination of vector, raster, and layout tools. Test your actual files before switching completely.
For open source and Linux
Choose Inkscape. Browser tools may also work on Linux, but they can depend on browser compatibility, internet access, account availability, and hardware acceleration.
For logos
Affinity is the strongest professional choice. Inkscape is the best open-source choice. Figma works well for simple digital brand systems, while Vectr is suitable for basic logos that do not need demanding production controls.
For digital illustration
Choose Affinity for a broad desktop workflow, Inkscape for open-source and SVG-first work, or Linearity Curve if you primarily draw on Apple devices.
For print
Start with Affinity or Inkscape, but let the printer’s specification decide. Confirm CMYK handling, spot colors, bleed, crop marks, embedded fonts, transparency, overprint, image resolution, color profiles, and the required PDF standard.

For web and UI design
Choose Figma for collaboration, components, responsive layouts, and prototypes. Use Inkscape for standalone SVG assets or Linearity Curve for illustration assets in an Apple-focused workflow.
For iPad illustration
Linearity Curve is the most natural candidate among these tools, but confirm current availability and plan restrictions. Canva’s Affinity launch announcement described iPad support as coming soon, so do not assume it is available on the date you read this.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can these tools open Illustrator AI files?
“Supports AI” can mean several different things, and those meanings matter:
- Native AI import: the application reads Illustrator-specific file data.
- PDF-compatible AI import: the file contains an embedded PDF representation that another application can read.
- Placed PDF or preview: the artwork may look correct but remain partly or entirely uneditable.
- SVG or PDF conversion: you export from Illustrator first and import the converted file.
- Editable fidelity: objects, text, masks, effects, and layers remain usable.
- Visual fidelity: the artwork looks similar, even though its underlying structure has changed.
Illustrator files can contain application-specific effects and structures. A file opening successfully does not prove that its layers, gradients, masks, text, symbols, clipping paths, appearance attributes, or transparency remain editable.
For collaboration, ask the recipient what they need. Use PDF for a final visual handoff when the recipient does not need to edit every object. Use SVG for web and straightforward vector interchange. Use EPS only when the receiving workflow specifically requires it. Keep the original working file in the source application.
Print-production warnings
A tool can be excellent for screen graphics and still be unsuitable for a particular printer’s workflow. Before committing to a new application, obtain the printer’s PDF specification and test a real file.
Check:
- CMYK conversion and color profiles.
- Spot colors and overprint behavior.
- Bleed and crop marks.
- Transparency flattening.
- Font embedding or outlining.
- Image resolution and linked assets.
- PDF/X or other required output standards.
Font licensing is separate from software licensing. Moving away from Adobe does not automatically give you the right to embed, outline, or distribute a font. Check the font license and ask collaborators whether they need the font files or outlined text.
Cloud accounts, privacy, and offline work
Desktop and browser tools make different trade-offs. Figma and other browser-first applications can require accounts and cloud storage, and they may be affected by internet access, browser memory, school or company network policies, and export restrictions.
Affinity’s relationship with Canva is relevant to users who prefer completely independent software. Canva says Affinity stores work locally and that Affinity content is not used to train Canva AI; treat that as Canva’s stated policy rather than a broader independent security guarantee.
Inkscape is the clearest choice when local files, open-source licensing, Linux support, and independence from a commercial account are priorities.

Migration checklist
- Back up your original AI files before converting anything.
- List the fonts, linked images, plugins, scripts, libraries, and templates your workflow depends on.
- Choose several representative files, including a simple logo and your most complex real project.
- Export test copies to PDF and SVG, and preserve the original files.
- Open the tests in the candidate application.
- Inspect text, masks, gradients, clipping paths, transparency, symbols, layers, and colors.
- Test export on the target screen, website, client workflow, or printer.
- Confirm the recipient’s required Illustrator version, fonts, color profile, and output standard.
- Keep the original Illustrator files until delivery and approval are complete.
When you should not switch completely
A free alternative may not replace Illustrator cleanly if your work depends on proprietary plugins, Creative Cloud Libraries, Adobe Fonts, scripts, linked assets, complex agency templates, or clients who require editable AI files. In those cases, a hybrid workflow may be safer: use Affinity or Inkscape for new work, while retaining Illustrator for legacy files and strict client handoffs.
There is also no reason to force Figma, Vectr, or Boxy SVG into a job they were not designed to do. Use Figma for collaboration and product design, a lightweight SVG editor for small web assets, and a desktop application for complex illustration or print work.
Final verdict
Choose Affinity by Canva if you want the closest broad professional replacement for Illustrator on Mac or Windows. Choose Inkscape if open source, Linux, and a genuinely free local application matter most. Choose Figma for collaborative UI and product design. Choose Linearity Curve for Apple-focused illustration, and consider Corel Vector, Vectr, or Boxy SVG when a browser-based or lightweight SVG workflow is more important than full Illustrator-level capability.
