Microsoft’s MAI-Image-1 was real, but the headline is now dated. Microsoft announced it on October 13, 2025, as its first image-generation model developed entirely in-house, then began rolling it into Bing Image Creator and Copilot products on November 4. Microsoft’s current documentation now points users toward newer MAI models, especially MAI-Image-2e and the MAI-Image-2.5 family.
What MAI-Image-1 was
MAI-Image-1 was a text-to-image model developed by Microsoft AI for generating images from written prompts. Microsoft positioned it for photorealistic imagery, landscapes, varied creative work, lighting effects, reflections, and more natural-looking visual diversity.
The important wording is developed entirely in-house: that is Microsoft’s description of the model’s development. It does not establish that every training component, dataset, safety system, infrastructure layer, or product integration was created without outside software or services. It is also not evidence that Microsoft stopped using OpenAI technology elsewhere.

Where MAI-Image-1 was available
Microsoft initially named three product surfaces:
- Bing Image Creator, Microsoft’s consumer-facing image-generation tool.
- Copilot Audio Expressions, where Story Mode used the model to visualize a story.
- Copilot Labs, subject to the availability of the relevant feature and region.
Microsoft said availability covered countries with access to Bing Image Creator and Copilot Labs. That did not mean every country, account type, or product surface received the model at the same time.
Is MAI-Image-1 still available?
Do not assume that it is still selectable. Microsoft’s current Bing Image Creator page highlights MAI-Image-2e, describing it as an improvement over version 1 with sharper detail, richer color, better text rendering, and stronger prompt adherence. Current Microsoft Foundry documentation lists MAI-Image-2, MAI-Image-2e, MAI-Image-2.5, MAI-Image-2.5-Flash, and MAI-Image-2.5-Pro—but not MAI-Image-1 as a current model offering.
Older Bing documentation still contains references to MAI-Image-1, which explains why older articles and cached pages may say it is available. The safest conclusion is that MAI-Image-1 was a launch product in late 2025, while Microsoft’s public product documentation has since moved toward newer MAI versions.

In practice, if MAI-Image-1 does not appear in your model menu, that is likely because the interface has moved to a newer model. Microsoft does not promise that the original model remains exposed to every user.

How to use Microsoft’s current consumer image generator
- Open Bing Image Creator.
- Sign in with a personal Microsoft Account.
- Enter a descriptive prompt.
- Choose the available model if your account sees a model selector.
- Generate the image and download the result.
Microsoft describes Bing Image Creator as free for users with a personal Microsoft Account. The documented experience is not available to users signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID, which generally means a work or school account.
Microsoft has documented fast and standard creation modes, 15 free fast creations per day, Microsoft Rewards as one way to continue fast creation, and up to 200 prompts per 24-hour period. Treat these as account- and product-version-dependent limits rather than permanent specifications. Microsoft can change quotas, speed policies, and interface labels.

Generation and editing are not the same thing
A model that generates a new image from text is not necessarily the model used to edit an uploaded image. Older Bing documentation stated that uploaded-image editing was handled by GPT-4o rather than MAI-Image-1 or DALL-E 3 in that experience.
Newer Foundry documentation shows image-to-image editing support for parts of the MAI-Image-2.5 family. That does not mean the consumer Bing interface exposes the same editing controls or uses the same model. Always distinguish between the model selected for new generation and the model assigned to an editing workflow.
What followed MAI-Image-1?

Microsoft says MAI-Image-2e is up to 22% faster and four times more efficient than MAI-Image-2. Those are Microsoft’s claims and depend on the test conditions and workload. Microsoft positions MAI-Image-2 as the better choice for detailed in-image text, photorealistic contrast, and smoother tonal transitions; that is a vendor recommendation, not an independent comparative verdict.
Bing versus Microsoft Foundry
Bing Image Creator: best for casual use
Bing is the practical choice if you want a browser interface, no API setup, and free experimentation. It is suitable for concepts, social images, personal projects, and quick visual studies.

The trade-offs are account restrictions, changing quotas, regional differences, and limited control over which model is actually exposed to your account. It is not the right choice when you need guaranteed API stability, batch processing, strict model versioning, or enterprise governance.
Microsoft Foundry: best for development and production workflows
Foundry is the relevant route for developers and businesses that need Azure authentication, deployment controls, API access, regional options, and usage-based billing. It requires an Azure subscription with a valid payment method, a Microsoft Foundry project, and appropriate permissions.
Microsoft’s current Foundry documentation lists minimum image dimensions of 768 pixels by 768 pixels and a maximum total of 1,048,576 pixels. A 1024×1024 image fits that limit; other aspect ratios may also work if their total pixel count remains within the model’s limit. Deployment regions and quotas vary by model and deployment type.

Microsoft listed MAI-Image-2e at $5 per 1 million text-input tokens and $19.50 per 1 million image-output tokens in its April 14, 2026 announcement. Treat that as a dated pricing signal and verify current Azure pricing before deploying or budgeting.

Common problems
“I cannot find MAI-Image-1.”
Check the current model selector rather than relying on an older article. Your account may now expose MAI-Image-2e or another newer model instead.
“Bing Image Creator will not let me sign in.”
Confirm that you are using a personal Microsoft Account. Microsoft says the documented Bing Image Creator experience is unavailable to Microsoft Entra work or school accounts.

Generation and editing may use different models. The older Bing workflow specifically separated uploaded-image editing from MAI-Image-1 generation. Newer Foundry editing capabilities do not imply identical controls in Bing.
“I have run out of fast creations.”
Try the standard creation mode or check the live Bing interface for its current quota and Rewards options. Quotas are operational policies and can change.
What the original headline gets right—and wrong
The historical claim is accurate: Microsoft did announce MAI-Image-1 as its first image-generation model developed entirely in-house, and it did begin rolling the model into Bing and Copilot products.
The misleading part is the word now. A 2025 launch announcement should not be read as proof that MAI-Image-1 remains the current Microsoft image model in 2026. Microsoft’s current consumer and developer documentation points instead to MAI-Image-2e and the MAI-Image-2.5 family.
