ChatGPT can create images that look photorealistic, but the result depends less on phrases such as “ultra-realistic” or “8K” than on the quality of the visual brief. Describe a coherent subject, setting, light source, viewpoint, materials, composition, and intended use; then inspect the first result and correct one defect at a time.
As of August 2026, ChatGPT Images 2.0 can generate new images and edit existing ones across current ChatGPT plans, including Free. Usage limits and some advanced features vary by plan. See OpenAI’s image documentation and the Free-tier FAQ for current availability.
Can ChatGPT create realistic images?
Yes. ChatGPT can produce images that resemble photographs, product photography, interiors, portraits, food photographs, travel scenes, and editorial concepts. It can also edit an uploaded image or modify a selected area of a generated image.
“Realistic” does not simply mean sharp or high-resolution. A convincing image usually has:

- Natural proportions and anatomy
- Objects that visibly contact the surfaces beneath them
- Materials that respond appropriately to light
- Varied textures rather than repeating patterns
- Plausible depth and perspective
- Small, restrained imperfections
- A coherent relationship between foreground, subject, and background
A photorealistic image resembles a photograph. A realistic illustration remains believable but visibly illustrated. A cinematic image may use stylized lighting and composition, while a hyperreal image is often highly polished or exaggerated. None of these labels guarantees physical accuracy.
How to create an image in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT on the web, iOS, or Android.
- Start a new conversation.
- Describe the image directly, or look for Images in the interface.
- Submit your prompt and wait for the image to render. Complex requests may take several minutes.
- Select the result to open editing, copying, saving, and sharing controls.
Interface labels can vary by platform, account, geography, and rollout. If you do not see an Images entry, ask directly: Create an image of... Confirm that you are using the official ChatGPT website or app, check whether you have reached a separate image-generation limit, and try again later if the service reports a rate limit. Image generation does not currently require a paid plan, although Free accounts have separate usage limits.
Generated images are saved in ChatGPT’s Images area. Download important work rather than treating the service as a permanent asset-management system. According to OpenAI, deleting the conversation in which an image was created also removes it from My images. See OpenAI’s image-management instructions.

The best prompt formula for realistic images
Think of your prompt as a photographic, commercial, or art-direction brief. Build it in this order:
- Subject: What is shown?
- Action: What is the subject doing?
- Setting: Where and when is it happening?
- Lighting: What is the source, direction, color, and softness of the light?
- Viewpoint: Where is the camera or viewer positioned?
- Materials: What are the surfaces made of?
- Composition: What is in the foreground, middle ground, and background?
- Imperfections: Which natural variations should appear?
- Output: What aspect ratio and intended use are required?
- Exclusions: What should not appear?
1. Describe the subject precisely
Include the person, animal, object, building, food, or scene; approximate age or size where relevant; clothing and materials; pose; expression; distinguishing features; and relationships to nearby objects.
Weak:
A realistic woman in a city.Stronger:
A candid street photograph of a woman in her early 30s wearing a weathered olive trench coat, walking quickly with a paper coffee cup through a rainy downtown sidewalk.2. Establish the environment
Specify the location, season, time of day, weather, surfaces, background activity, and atmospheric conditions. Instead of “a city street,” try:
Wet concrete, reflective shop windows, muted traffic in the distance, rainwater collected unevenly along the curb, and several pedestrians partly obscured by umbrellas.For an image supporting a painting concept, this level of environmental detail can provide more useful reference information than a list of style adjectives.

3. Describe light physically
State the light source, direction, hardness, color temperature, reflections, and shadow behavior.

4. Use viewpoint and composition language
Useful instructions include eye level, low angle, overhead view, close-up, medium shot, full-body framing, three-quarter view, subject placement, negative space, and foreground-background separation.

Material specificity often improves realism more than generic quality terms. Ask for brushed aluminum instead of “metal,” worn cotton instead of “fabric,” condensation on glass instead of “shiny,” uneven wood grain instead of “wooden,” and slightly scuffed leather instead of “luxury leather.”
6. Add restrained imperfections
Useful imperfections include tiny fabric wrinkles, uneven hair strands, natural skin variation, minor surface wear, small differences between repeated objects, dust, fingerprints, or water marks where appropriate. Do not ask for random defects everywhere: indiscriminate imperfection can make an image look damaged rather than natural.
7. Control text and logos
ChatGPT can follow instructions to add text, but proofread every letter. For example:

Place the exact headline “FRESH EVERY MORNING” on the sign. Use uppercase sans-serif lettering, centered, with generous spacing. Use an eye-level medium close-up with natural skin texture, subtle facial lines, realistic hair strands, and no beauty-filter effect.
Keep the image documentary and understated, with realistic shadows and no exaggerated bokeh. Use a vertical 4:5 composition.Product photograph
Create a photorealistic commercial product photograph of a handmade ceramic mug on a light oak kitchen table.
The mug is off-white with a deep cobalt-blue irregular glaze around the rim. Show subtle handmade variation, a tiny glaze imperfection, and faint steam rising from freshly brewed coffee. Place it beside an open paperback book and a folded linen napkin.
Use soft morning window light from the left, with a gentle shadow falling to the right and a believable reflection on the coffee surface. Photograph at table height in a three-quarter close-up. Keep the background softly out of focus but recognizable as a modest home kitchen.
Use a horizontal 3:2 composition and leave clean negative space on the right for product copy. Do not add logos or text.Real-estate interior
Create a realistic real-estate listing photograph of a compact renovated kitchen in a 1920s American house.
Show white shaker cabinets, lightly veined quartz countertops, aged brass hardware, medium-tone oak flooring, and a large window over the sink. Include subtle variation in wood grain, a few fingerprints on the refrigerator, and natural unevenness in the stone pattern.
Use bright but soft late-morning daylight from the window. Photograph from the doorway at eye level with a moderate wide-angle perspective that keeps vertical lines straight. Avoid fisheye distortion, oversaturated colors, impossible reflections, and furniture blocking the walking path.
Use a horizontal 16:9 composition.Food photograph
Create a photorealistic overhead food photograph of a bowl of handmade ramen on a dark walnut table.
Show clear broth, spring onions, sliced mushrooms, noodles with natural variation, a soft-boiled egg, and a small amount of steam. The bowl should have slight glaze variation. Include chopsticks resting diagonally beside it and a few realistic broth droplets near the rim.
Use soft directional window light from the upper-left, with gentle shadows and controlled highlights on the broth. Keep the styling appetizing but not perfect: the noodles should overlap naturally and the toppings should not form a mechanical pattern.
Use a square composition. Do not add text, labels, extra utensils, or duplicate ingredients.A reliable generation and revision workflow
- Choose the visual category. Decide whether you need a documentary photograph, studio portrait, product photograph, architectural visualization, food image, lifestyle scene, or reference for a painting.
- Write a one-sentence scene brief. Establish the subject and situation before adding visual effects.
- Add physical details. Describe surfaces, wear, texture, and relationships between objects.
- Specify light and viewpoint. Explain where the light comes from and how the scene is framed.
- Set the composition. State the aspect ratio, subject placement, and any required negative space.
- Generate a first version. Treat it as a draft, not a final image.
- Inspect deliberately. Check anatomy, shadows, contact points, reflections, repeated objects, text, background perspective, and crop.
- Correct one problem at a time. Preserve everything that already works.
A focused revision is easier to evaluate than a completely rewritten prompt:
Keep the bottle, stone bench, lighting, and composition unchanged. Correct the cap so it is a single continuous piece of brushed steel. Remove the duplicate rim and preserve the condensation.Then make a separate correction:
Keep everything else unchanged. Make the bottle’s contact shadow more natural so it clearly rests on the bench rather than floating above it.How to edit part of an image
Open the generated image, select the area to change, and describe the edit. For example:
In the selected area only, replace the distorted hand with a naturally posed hand holding the cup. Preserve the person’s face, clothing, lighting, and background.OpenAI notes that selection boundaries are not always exact and that an edit can extend beyond the highlighted area. If too much changes:
- Select a smaller area.
- Describe the location directly, such as “the left background behind the subject.”
- State explicitly what must remain unchanged.
- Make one smaller edit instead of several simultaneous edits.
- Return to an earlier version if the current edit damaged the composition.
If the selection tool is not producing the right result, describe the target area in the conversation instead. OpenAI documents both editing methods in its image-generation guide.

Distorted hands
Keep the person, pose, clothing, lighting, and background unchanged. Correct both hands so each has five naturally proportioned fingers, with the fingers clearly wrapped around the object. Remove extra fingers and fused joints.If this continues to fail, simplify the pose or place one hand behind a natural object. A prompt cannot guarantee perfect anatomy.
Floating objects
Keep the object’s shape and position. Add a believable contact shadow directly beneath it and make the lower edge visibly rest on the surface. Match the shadow direction to the existing light.Unrealistic reflections
Correct the reflection in the glass so it follows the same viewing angle and light direction as the scene. Remove reflections that show objects outside the room or contradict the camera position.Plastic-looking skin
Reduce the beauty-retouching effect. Restore subtle pores, natural tonal variation, fine lines, and uneven highlights. Keep the expression and facial structure unchanged.Duplicate objects
Keep the overall composition. Remove the duplicate cup in the background and replace it with a single distinct saucer. Ensure every visible object has a separate, physically plausible shape.Wrong text
Replace all visible lettering with exactly: “OPEN SATURDAY.” Use simple black uppercase lettering on the white sign. Do not include any other words, symbols, or logos.Always proofread generated lettering. For important commercial artwork, add final typography outside ChatGPT.

Inconsistent person or product
Preserve the subject’s face, hair, clothing, body proportions, product shape, color, and camera angle. Change only the background from a city street to a quiet train platform.Even with preservation instructions, check identity and product consistency rather than assuming they are exact.

An uploaded reference can establish composition, color palette, product shape, clothing, interior layout, pose, lighting direction, or visual style. Tell ChatGPT what role the reference should play:
Use the uploaded image as a composition and lighting reference. Create a new image rather than copying identifiable people or private details. Preserve the general camera angle and color palette, but change the setting to a quiet coastal kitchen.Distinguish between “analyze this image,” “use this as a reference,” “edit this image,” and “create a new image inspired by this composition.” They are different requests.
For product mockups, be explicit:
Preserve the exact bottle silhouette, cap shape, label placement, and color palette from the uploaded reference. Change only the surrounding environment.Upload only material you have permission to use. OpenAI’s service terms restrict reproducing a person’s likeness without express consent and necessary rights. A private person’s photograph requires particular care, and using a reference to imitate a living artist or commercial campaign can raise additional legal and ethical issues.
Static image inputs support PNG, JPEG, and non-animated GIF files, with a stated limit of 20 MB per image. The image-input feature does not provide video analysis. See OpenAI’s upload guidance and image-input FAQ.
Choosing an aspect ratio

You can use the aspect-ratio picker or specify the ratio in the prompt. Choose it before composing the scene so the subject is not awkwardly cropped later.

Is the Free plan enough?
Free users can currently create images, making the plan suitable for occasional personal images, learning, and prompt experimentation. Image creation has separate usage limits and may be more restricted than paid access.

A paid plan does not guarantee perfect anatomy, exact text, identity consistency, or legal clearance. A ChatGPT subscription also does not automatically include API credits. Check ChatGPT pricing and API pricing separately because limits, features, and prices can change.
Rights, safety, privacy, and provenance
People and likeness
Do not use someone’s face to create fake evidence, impersonation, misleading endorsements, non-consensual intimate imagery, or deceptive depictions of real events. Obtain consent and the necessary rights before using a person’s likeness, and check OpenAI’s current usage policies and service terms.
Medical images
Do not use generated images or image analysis for diagnosis, medical documentation, or clinical decisions. OpenAI says its image-input feature is not suitable for interpreting specialized medical images such as CT scans.
Privacy
Avoid uploading confidential, proprietary, identifying, or private material unless you have permission and understand the controls that apply to your account. Businesses should consult the relevant OpenAI privacy and service documentation rather than relying on general assumptions.
Provenance is not proof of truth
OpenAI documents C2PA metadata and SynthID signals in generated images. These signals concern origin; they do not prove that the depicted event happened, that the content is factually accurate, or that all relevant rights belong to the user. Cropping, screenshots, conversions, and other transformations may remove or weaken signals. A negative result from the verification tool does not prove that an image was not created with OpenAI tools.
Final checklist before downloading
- Are the anatomy, hands, faces, and object proportions correct?
- Do shadows, reflections, perspective, and contact points agree?
- Are materials and textures physically believable?
- Is every word spelled correctly?
- Are there duplicated, fused, or impossible objects?
- Does the crop suit the intended platform or painting reference?
- Is the person, product, or location represented accurately enough for its use?
- Do you have rights to uploaded references and likenesses?
- Does the project require disclosure of synthetic media?
- Have you downloaded the final version and preserved an earlier draft?
The most dependable method is simple: describe a coherent visual situation, generate a draft, inspect the physical details, and make focused corrections. Realism comes from believable relationships between light, materials, objects, and space—not from adding more quality adjectives.
