Meta 3D Gen is real, but it is not a generally available Meta app. Announced on July 2, 2024, the research system combines AI-generated geometry, textures, and physically based rendering (PBR) materials. Meta reports that it can create a textured 3D asset in under a minute and retexture an existing mesh from a text prompt. As of August 18, 2026, Meta’s official listing still presents 3D Gen as a research publication—not a public product, hosted app, API, or confirmed downloadable model.
What Meta 3D Gen actually creates
Meta 3D Gen—also written as 3DGen—is a text-to-3D asset-generation pipeline. It is designed to produce more than a single rendered image or a flat texture:
- Geometry: the object’s three-dimensional shape and mesh.
- Textures: surface color and visual detail.
- PBR material information: channels such as color, metalness, and roughness.
- Relightable appearance: materials intended to respond more plausibly when lighting changes.
Meta also describes generative retexturing. An artist could provide an existing or previously generated mesh and ask for a new appearance, such as “make this wooden chair polished black metal” or “replace the surface with cracked blue ceramic.” That changes the object’s visual treatment; it does not necessarily redesign its underlying geometry.

How the system works
3D Gen combines two Meta research systems:
Meta 3D AssetGen
AssetGen focuses on generating the object’s mesh, texture, and PBR material information. Meta describes a signed-distance-function representation for shape and a UV-space texture-refinement transformer for surface detail. Its goal is to keep geometry and material appearance coherent rather than treating the output as a simple image projected onto a model.
Meta 3D TextureGen
TextureGen is designed to texture arbitrary geometry consistently. Meta says it conditions a text-to-image model on 3D semantics, fuses the results into a complete UV texture map, and uses a second enhancement network for arbitrary upscaling, including 4K output. The technical paper is also available on arXiv.
Meta says 3D Gen reasons about objects in three related spaces:

- View space: 2D rendered views of the object.
- Volumetric space: a 3D representation used to reason about shape.
- UV or texture space: the surface-coordinate layout used to generate consistent texture maps.
These are not three separate models delivered to the user. They are complementary representations intended to preserve both shape coherence and texture consistency during generation.

How fast is it?
Meta reports the following research results:
- Full textured 3D asset generation in under one minute.
- TextureGen texturing in less than 20 seconds for arbitrary geometry.
- Texture enhancement at resolutions including 4K.
Those figures are Meta’s research claims, not service-level guarantees for a public product. Actual times can depend on hardware, model configuration, resolution, mesh complexity, preprocessing, and later texture refinement.
What the reported quality results mean
Meta says its combined approach achieved a 68% win rate against its single-stage comparison model. It also reports that 3D Gen performed better on prompt fidelity and visual quality than selected industry baselines for complex prompts while being significantly faster.
AssetGen’s research page reports additional figures: a 17% improvement in Chamfer Distance, a 40% improvement in LPIPS, and 72% human preference over comparable-speed industry competitors, including PBR-capable systems.

These numbers need context. Chamfer Distance measures geometric distance between predicted and reference shapes, with lower generally better. LPIPS is a learned perceptual image-similarity metric, also generally better when lower. Human preference records which result evaluators preferred under the paper’s test conditions. None of these figures means that every Meta-generated asset will have 17% better geometry, or that it will be more useful in every production workflow. The comparison set, prompts, evaluators, and scoring method come from Meta’s own evaluation.

Why PBR and retexturing matter
A texture that looks convincing in one render is not necessarily a useful material. PBR data can separate appearance into properties such as base color, metalness, and roughness, allowing a renderer or game engine to respond more naturally to different light sources and viewing conditions.
That could make 3D Gen valuable for rapid concepting: a designer might generate one prop, explore several material directions, and test how each version looks in a virtual environment. Game developers, AR/VR teams, product visualizers, VFX artists, and 3D-printing hobbyists could likewise use the system for early-stage exploration.
However, PBR output does not guarantee physically accurate materials. A surface may look metallic without behaving correctly, or suggest glass, leather, or ceramic while still needing manual calibration.

What 3D Gen does not guarantee
A visually appealing model is not automatically ready for production. Meta’s research claims do not establish that every output has:

- Clean, evenly distributed topology.
- Optimized polygon counts for a particular engine.
- Usable UV layouts without seams or distortion.
- Correct scale or physical dimensions.
- Watertight geometry suitable for 3D printing.
- Deformation-friendly topology for rigging and animation.
- Collision meshes, naming conventions, or production-ready file organization.
Generative systems can also struggle with thin structures such as wires, straps, handles, and blades; hidden or poorly constrained surfaces; repeating patterns; reflective or transparent materials; and complex prompts containing conflicting requirements. Characters may look convincing while remaining difficult to rig or animate. Texture maps can contain blurry regions, inconsistent details, or visible UV seams.
For commercial work, creators must separately review copyright, trademark, privacy, and output-licensing questions. A prompt for a recognizable character, logo, or branded product can introduce rights issues regardless of how well the model renders.

There is no verified public Meta 3D Gen app, API, or general downloadable release identified on Meta’s official publication page as of August 18, 2026. The page links to the research publication and lists arXiv as its publisher. It does not provide a normal consumer workflow or indicate that Meta AI or Horizon Worlds exposes 3D Gen as a general-purpose generator.
That does not prove that no private, later, or unreleased implementation exists. It does mean readers should treat 3D Gen as a research system unless Meta publishes a separate official release.

If you need an accessible service today, these are separate products—not Meta implementations:

For a meaningful comparison, use the same test set across services:

- One organic object.
- One character or creature.
- One object with a clean repeating pattern.
- One transparent or reflective material.
- One existing mesh for retexturing.
- One asset intended for 3D printing.
Score prompt adherence, silhouette accuracy, back-side quality, topology, UV layout, texture resolution, material channels, export formats, cleanup time, licensing, privacy terms, and total cost per usable asset. This measures what matters in a real workflow better than a single attractive demonstration render.
