Adobe announced Firefly Image 3 on April 23, 2024—not in 2026. The Photoshop update introduced Generate Image, bringing direct text-to-image generation into Photoshop alongside improved Generative Fill and Generative Expand. It became generally available in October 2024, but Adobe retired the model from Photoshop during August 2026. Adobe now recommends newer workflows, including Firefly Fill & Expand.
What Adobe actually launched
Adobe’s April 2024 announcement covered three related but distinct things:
- Adobe Firefly is the broader family of generative AI models and products.
- Firefly Image 3 was the specific image-generation model announced in 2024.
- Photoshop was the host application receiving new image-generation and image-editing workflows.
The headline claim that Photoshop gained “full text-to-image capabilities” was accurate in a specific sense: Photoshop could generate a new image from a written prompt, rather than limiting AI to modifying an existing selection. It did not mean that Photoshop could produce finished, publication-ready artwork without human direction or conventional editing.
Firefly Image 3 initially launched in beta in Photoshop, the Firefly web application, and InDesign. Adobe announced general availability in the October 2024 Photoshop update.

What Generate Image did in Photoshop
Historically, the workflow was designed to keep ideation inside Photoshop:
- Create a new document or open an existing one.
- Use Photoshop’s contextual task bar or image-generation control.
- Choose Generate Image.
- Enter a description of the desired image.
- Choose available content, style, or reference-image options.
- Generate and review variations.
- Continue editing the result with layers, masks, selections, adjustments, and retouching tools.
The generated result was intended to function as an editable Photoshop asset rather than a final answer that ended the workflow. Users could composite it with photography, replace unwanted areas, adjust color and lighting, or combine multiple generated elements.
Interface labels and model choices have changed since the 2024 beta. Historical screenshots should not be treated as a guaranteed guide to the current Photoshop interface.

When Firefly Image 3 reached general availability, Adobe said it powered Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Generate Similar, and Generate Background as well as the newer direct-generation workflow.
What Image 3 improved
Adobe presented Firefly Image 3 as an advance over earlier Firefly models, citing improvements in:
- Photorealism and fine detail
- Prompt interpretation, especially for complex descriptions
- Texture, lighting, and scene composition
- Styling controls and visual variety
- Integration with Photoshop’s existing editing workflow
These are Adobe’s product claims, not the result of an independent benchmark established for this article. In practical terms, the model was useful for concepting, background creation, canvas extension, object replacement, and producing quick visual variations. It still required judgment and cleanup, particularly for exact products, repeated objects, anatomy, typography, and brand-specific details.
Was it really “full” AI image generation?
Yes, if “full” means that Photoshop could create a starting image from a text prompt. Previously, Photoshop’s most visible generative workflows focused on changing an existing image or filling a selected region. Generate Image broadened that into a text-to-image creation workflow within the desktop editor.
No, if “full” is taken to mean fully automated professional production. Generated images can have inconsistent details, incorrect perspective, awkward hands, distorted lettering, unstable identities, or inaccurate product geometry. Separate generations may not preserve the same character, object, lighting, or camera position.
For reliable production, a sensible workflow is to generate the broad composition first, refine smaller regions separately, and finish important details with ordinary Photoshop tools. Add real typography in Photoshop or Illustrator rather than asking the model to render precise copy. For logos and regulated or high-value products, use approved artwork, photography, or 3D assets and use generative tools only for surrounding environments or rough ideation.
Commercial use and Content Credentials
Adobe said its own Firefly image models were designed for commercial use and trained on licensed content, including Adobe Stock, and public-domain content whose copyright had expired. That positioning is important, but it is not an unconditional legal guarantee for every image, project, jurisdiction, or use case.

“Designed for commercial use” does not remove responsibility for:
- Trademarks, logos, and brand references in prompts or outputs
- Publicity, privacy, and likeness rights relating to recognizable people
- Copyright in uploaded reference images or other source material
- Project-specific contractual requirements
- Different terms applying to beta features, regions, plans, or non-Adobe models
Review Adobe’s current generative AI product-specific terms before relying on an output commercially. Adobe’s own Firefly positioning should not automatically be extended to partner models available through Photoshop.
Adobe also said Firefly-powered Photoshop content automatically received Content Credentials. These provenance details can indicate that generative AI was used. They improve disclosure, but they do not prove that an image is factually accurate, legally unproblematic, or original in every relevant sense.
How Photoshop credits and plans worked
Credit rules changed after the 2024 launch, so older articles can be misleading. Adobe’s U.S. pricing information checked in August 2026 listed:

These prices are region-specific and can change. Adobe’s Photoshop credit documentation explains that standard and premium generations are treated differently. Credits reset monthly and do not roll over. Costs can depend on the selected model, feature, output, and file size.

Do not assume that every generative action costs one credit. A user’s plan, the selected model, and whether the feature is classified as standard or premium all matter. The Photoshop Generative Credits Usage panel is the appropriate place to check an account’s balance and current feature costs.
What happened to Firefly Image 3 in 2026?
This is the key update missing from a simple launch story. Adobe’s retirement notice says that Photoshop 27.6 removed Firefly Image 3 from the model picker on April 28, 2026. Versions 26.0 through 27.5 retained temporary access until August 2026, after which Adobe planned to remove the service across all versions and plans.
The retirement affected Firefly Image 3 in Generative Fill and Generative Expand. Adobe recommends Firefly Fill & Expand instead. The notice establishes August 2026 as the retirement period but does not establish a precise final day.
Accordingly, Firefly Image 3 should be treated as a historical Photoshop milestone, not as a current model to buy Photoshop for. Current Photoshop and Firefly workflows may offer newer Adobe models and, depending on the product, plan, region, and availability, partner models from companies such as Google, OpenAI, Runway, and Black Forest Labs. Each non-Adobe model must be evaluated under its own terms.
Troubleshooting common problems
Generate Image is missing
Check that Photoshop is updated and that the account, region, and plan support the relevant generative feature. The control may also have moved or changed names. Historical beta instructions are not a reliable description of every current build.

Firefly Image 3 is missing from the model picker
That is expected in Photoshop 27.6 and later because Adobe removed the model. Use the current recommended Firefly workflow or another available model instead.
The feature is visible but generation is blocked
Check the account’s generative-credit balance and whether the selected feature or model is premium. Plan limits and model costs differ.
The result is poor
Make the prompt more specific, adjust the selection boundary, try several variations, add a supported reference image, or finish the region manually. Smaller, targeted generations are often easier to correct than one prompt attempting to control every detail.

Do not expect independent generations to preserve exact identity or product geometry. Establish the broad scene first, then refine small areas and retain approved source assets wherever consistency matters.
Who should use Adobe’s current tools?
- Existing Photoshop subscribers: Useful for ideation, cleanup, background work, replacement, and canvas expansion, but there is no reason to choose Photoshop specifically for retired Image 3.
- High-volume Creative Cloud teams: Creative Cloud Pro may be more predictable for frequent standard generative work and also includes the wider Adobe application suite.
- Occasional users: The Photoshop single-app plan may be sufficient if AI usage is limited and the wider Creative Cloud bundle is unnecessary.
- Photographers: Generative Fill and Expand are most useful for cleanup, extensions, and background changes; exact product and identity work still benefits from conventional editing.
- Designers needing exact typography or logos: Generate imagery without text, then add approved type and brand assets manually.
- Users comparing AI models: Photoshop’s model choice can be useful, but partner models do not automatically share Adobe Firefly’s commercial-use positioning.
Alternatives to consider
Adobe Firefly is better suited to generation-first exploration, including web-based ideation and newer media workflows. Adobe Express Premium is a simpler option for social graphics, templates, marketing assets, and quick resizing. Photoshop remains the stronger choice for detailed compositing, masking, retouching, and production control.
Other image-generation platforms may offer different aesthetics, controls, pricing, or subject consistency. They also require separate review of licensing, training-data policies, privacy, and commercial-use terms.
Bottom line
Firefly Image 3 was a meaningful 2024 Photoshop milestone: it put direct text-to-image generation beside Generative Fill and Generative Expand in a professional image editor. But the model is no longer the forward-looking part of the story. By August 2026, Adobe was retiring it and directing users toward Firefly Fill & Expand and a broader ecosystem of newer Adobe and partner models. Buy or keep Photoshop for its current editing and model-choice workflow—not to obtain Firefly Image 3 itself.
