Adobe Illustrator’s “Not enough memory” error does not necessarily mean your computer needs more RAM. The most reliable fix is to update Illustrator, reset its preferences, check the scratch-disk settings, update your graphics software, and then determine whether the problem is limited to one document, object, or plug-in.
Save a backup first, then work through the fixes below in order.
What the error means
Illustrator can display a memory warning when it cannot complete an operation because of insufficient available RAM or virtual memory, low free space on a scratch disk, damaged preferences, a corrupted document, unusually complex artwork, an outdated graphics driver, a plug-in conflict, or a bug in a particular release.

The message may appear when opening a file, copying and pasting, previewing artwork, zooming, panning, or applying an effect. It is not proof that physical RAM is the only problem, so buying memory should not be the first troubleshooting step.
Illustrator also does not provide the same normal user-facing RAM-allocation control commonly associated with Photoshop. You generally cannot fix this error by assigning Illustrator a percentage of system memory. Adobe community guidance confirms that Illustrator uses available system resources rather than offering a standard manual RAM-allocation setting.
Quick fixes to try first
- Save a backup copy of the document to the computer’s local internal drive.
- Restart Illustrator and, if necessary, restart the computer.
- Check that the system drive and scratch-disk drive have substantial free space.
- Update Illustrator through the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Reset Illustrator preferences.
- Set suitable primary and secondary scratch disks.
- Update the graphics driver on Windows or macOS itself on a Mac.
- Test whether the error occurs in every document or only one file.
These steps follow Adobe’s troubleshooting sequence for memory-related Illustrator crashes: update Illustrator, reset preferences, select scratch disks with enough space, and update graphics software or the operating system.
1. Protect the document before troubleshooting
If the file is open, choose File > Save As and create a backup under a new name. Save that copy to the computer’s local internal drive. Do not overwrite the only copy of a file that may already be damaged.
Adobe does not support using Illustrator files directly from network drives or removable storage, and current requirements also identify case-sensitive file systems as unsupported. Cloud-synced folders can introduce their own synchronization and access problems. Copy the working file locally before diagnosing it.
If Illustrator becomes unresponsive, use the operating system’s force-quit or Task Manager controls. When Illustrator reopens, check whether it offers a recovered document and save any recovered work under a new filename.

2. Update Illustrator
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Open Updates.
- Install the available Illustrator update.
- Restart Illustrator and repeat the operation that produced the error.
Memory errors can be release-specific. Historical Adobe forum reports describe problems corrected in particular older Illustrator updates, but those reports should not be treated as universal fixes for current versions. Install the current update available for your supported system rather than downgrading or targeting an old patch without identifying the affected release.
3. Reset Illustrator preferences
When Illustrator opens
macOS: Choose Illustrator > Preferences > General, click Reset Preferences, click OK, and restart Illustrator.

Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences > General, click Reset Preferences, click OK, and restart Illustrator.
Adobe says Illustrator saves the previous preferences file as Adobe Illustrator Prefs.err after a reset. Resetting preferences can remove customized workspaces, keyboard shortcuts, tool settings, and other personal configuration, so preserve or rename preference folders rather than deleting them immediately if those settings matter to you. Folder locations and menu labels vary by Illustrator version and operating system.
When Illustrator will not stay open
Launch Illustrator while holding:
- macOS:
Option + Command + Shift - Windows:
Alt + Ctrl + Shift
This invokes Illustrator’s documented preference-reset shortcut. After the reset, reopen the document and test again.
4. Check the scratch disk
- Open Preferences > Plug-ins & Scratch Disk.
- Choose a fast drive with plenty of available space as the Primary scratch disk.
- Choose another suitable drive as the Secondary scratch disk, if one is available.
- Click OK and restart Illustrator.
A scratch disk is temporary working space; changing it does not add physical RAM. Prefer a fast, reliable internal SSD. An external drive can be suitable only if it is locally attached, stable, fast enough, and has ample free space. A slow, nearly full, disconnected, network, or removable drive can make the problem worse.

Adobe specifies installation space, but it does not provide one universal free-space threshold for every scratch-disk workload. Large documents and complex effects may require considerably more working space than the installation minimum.
5. Update graphics software
On Windows, install the latest compatible graphics driver from the GPU or computer manufacturer and restart Windows.
On macOS, install the latest compatible macOS update available for the Mac and restart it.
If the warning appears during previewing, zooming, panning, or GPU-rendered effects, temporarily disable GPU Performance as a diagnostic test. This can indicate a graphics-rendering problem, but it is not Adobe’s primary universal fix for a “Not enough memory” message. If disabling GPU Performance changes the behavior, update the driver or operating system and simplify the affected artwork.
6. Find out whether the document is responsible
If every document fails
Suspect preferences, low system or scratch-disk space, an outdated Illustrator release, graphics software, a third-party plug-in, or a background utility. Create a blank document and test a simple shape, copy operation, and save operation.
If only one document fails
The leading suspects are a damaged document structure, an oversized embedded image, excessive anchor points, a complex mesh or effect, a broken placed asset, or a corrupted PDF, SVG, or other imported object.

- Make a backup and work from a local copy.
- Create a new blank document.
- Copy artwork from the original in small groups.
- Test after each group.
- When the error returns, undo the last group and copy its objects individually.
- Remove, rebuild, simplify, or replace the object that consistently triggers the error.
- Save the recovered artwork under a new filename.
This process may recover usable artwork, but a damaged file cannot always be repaired completely. Keep the original untouched while isolating objects.
7. Reduce complex artwork
- Remove unnecessary live effects and hidden objects.
- Reduce excessive anchor points.
- Downsample oversized embedded raster images.
- Use linked images instead of embedding them where appropriate.
- Split a very large illustration into separate working files.
- Rebuild a damaged mesh, placed PDF, SVG, or imported object.
- Use View > Outline temporarily to determine whether preview rendering is involved.
Do not assume one specific object type is always responsible. Complex vector geometry, embedded images, effects, and imported assets can each become the trigger depending on the file.
8. Test plug-ins and background utilities
Temporarily quit third-party Illustrator plug-ins and utilities such as clipboard managers, automation tools, font managers, overlays, screen-recording tools, and software that scans Illustrator’s temporary or preference folders. Restart Illustrator and test again. If the error disappears, re-enable utilities one at a time to identify the conflict.
Historical reports associated a “not enough memory” problem in Illustrator CC 2015.3 with clipboard utilities. That evidence is version-specific and should not be generalized to every current Illustrator release.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If security software is confirmed as the cause, restore protection and use only a narrowly scoped exclusion approved by the security product’s documentation or administrator.
Use the symptom to choose the next step

Check Illustrator’s current requirements
For Illustrator version 30.0 and later, Adobe lists 8 GB of RAM minimum and 16 GB recommended. Adobe’s listed supported systems include Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 23H2, supported Windows 10 releases including 22H2 and 21H2 LTSC, and macOS 26 Tahoe, macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 14 Sonoma, and macOS 13 Ventura.

Adobe lists 2 GB available installation space on Windows and 3 GB on macOS, with additional space required during installation, and recommends an SSD. Windows graphics requirements include at least 1 GB of VRAM, 4 GB recommended, and DirectX 12 or OpenGL 4.0 or later. Mac requirements include at least 1 GB of VRAM, 2 GB recommended, and Metal support. See Adobe’s current Illustrator technical requirements for version-specific details.
Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee smooth operation with large files, many applications, oversized images, or effect-heavy artwork.
When more RAM or a new SSD is justified
More RAM may help when the operating system is genuinely under memory pressure, especially if you work with large illustrations while several other applications are open. Check actual memory usage and confirm that Illustrator meets the recommended requirements before upgrading.
More RAM will not repair corrupted preferences, a damaged file, an incompatible plug-in, a release-specific bug, or a graphics-driver problem. Likewise, a new SSD is useful when the current drive is nearly full, slow, unreliable, or unsuitable for scratch work—not simply because the error contains the word “memory.”

Fixes to avoid
- Do not assume the message proves you need more RAM.
- Do not allocate a Photoshop-style percentage of RAM to Illustrator; Illustrator does not normally offer that control.
- Do not select a slow, unstable, nearly full, network, or disconnected drive as a scratch disk.
- Do not use old forum fixes as universal instructions for current releases.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus software.
- Do not overwrite the only copy of a file that may be damaged.
The Bottom Line
Start with software and storage: update Illustrator, reset preferences, choose suitable local scratch disks, and update graphics software. If the error affects only one file or operation, isolate the document, object, plug-in, or utility before spending money on RAM or a new drive.
