GIMP 3.0.8 is a genuine maintenance release from January 24, 2026—but it is no longer the current stable version. For a new installation, most users should choose GIMP 3.2.4. GIMP 3.0.8 remains useful when a project, plug-in, script, operating-system image, or reproducible workflow specifically depends on the GIMP 3.0 branch.
What is GIMP 3.0.8?
GIMP 3.0.8 is the eighth micro-release in the GIMP 3.0 series and the fourth maintenance release in that branch, released on January 24, 2026. The version number means:
- 3: the GIMP 3 major generation.
- 0: the original GIMP 3.0 stable branch.
- 8: a micro-release focused mainly on fixes and regressions.
It is not a major feature release. GIMP’s 3.0 micro-releases are intended primarily for bug fixes, security work, compatibility corrections, and packaging improvements; larger feature work belongs in minor releases such as 3.2. See the GIMP 3.0 release notes.

GIMP 3.0.8 versus GIMP 3.2.4
As of August 2026, GIMP’s official downloads page lists GIMP 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026, as the current stable version. GIMP 3.0.8 is therefore an older stable-branch release, not the latest GIMP.

The 3.0.8 announcement said it might be the final 3.0 release unless a serious bug required another update. It should not be described as definitively the final release.
What changed in GIMP 3.0.8?
Improved font loading
GIMP 3.0.8 improves startup performance for users with large font collections. It also waits for fonts to initialize before loading images, reducing display and XCF problems caused by partially initialized fonts. On macOS, legacy Skia font handling was adjusted so more font weights work correctly instead of only Bold.
This is a targeted improvement, not a universal startup-time guarantee. The release announcement provides no single benchmark that applies to every font library or computer.
Corrected lossless WebP export
An earlier bug could allow lossy WebP settings—including quality values below 100—to affect an export that was intended to be lossless. The WebP plug-in was corrected in 3.0.8.
If you use WebP for archival or other lossless work, check the export settings and validate important output. The fix addresses GIMP’s plug-in behavior; it does not guarantee identical handling by every external viewer or conversion tool.
Windows installer and color-profile fixes
- Duplicated installer text in some languages was corrected.
- The Python version used by the Windows installer was updated in response to vulnerabilities affecting Python 3.12.11.
- Windows color profiles that failed to load because of operating-system path differences were fixed.
After upgrading, some users may need to reassign default color profiles in Preferences if an older, incorrect path remains saved.

gimp-3.0 --no-interfaceThis avoids the previous requirement to use gimp-console-3.0 on systems without a display. The --show-debug-menu flag is also visible. However, --no-interface is an invocation option, not a promise that every plug-in or GUI operation behaves identically in a headless environment.
Flatpak plug-in configuration
Flatpak safeguards were improved so GIMP shows the correct configuration directory even when XDG_CONFIG_HOME is undefined. This should make locating the directory for third-party plug-ins easier.
Filter, SVG, and non-destructive-editing fixes
GIMP 3.0.8 fixes a rare crash involving the Equalize filter and images containing NaN values, which are more likely in scientific or mapping workflows than ordinary photography. SVG import rendering, including path rendering, was also improved.
Several stability problems involving non-destructive filters were addressed, particularly when copying and pasting layers or images with attached filters. Quick Mask interactions with non-destructive filters also received fixes.

The release fixes a specific problem in which grid-color data could be written in a newer format when saving an XCF intended for GIMP 2.10. That could cause errors when the file was reopened in GIMP 2.10.
This is useful for mixed GIMP 2.10 and 3.0 environments, but it does not make every GIMP 3 project universally compatible with GIMP 2.10. Newer non-destructive filters, metadata, layer capabilities, and other features may still fail to round-trip perfectly.

Security fixes in GIMP 3.0.8
GIMP 3.0.8 addresses the reported exploits ZDI-CAN-28232, ZDI-CAN-28265, ZDI-CAN-28530, ZDI-CAN-28591, and ZDI-CAN-28599. It also fixes an ICO-file issue without an assigned CVE at publication time and a potential issue involving Creator blocks in PaintShop Pro PSP files.
Dependencies were updated as well, including Python in the Windows installer and librsvg 2.61.3, to address vulnerabilities. The details are documented in the official GIMP 3.0.8 announcement.
These are specified security fixes, not an absolute guarantee that GIMP is safe against every future threat. Avoid opening untrusted SVG, ICO, PSP, or other image files, and be equally cautious with third-party plug-ins, scripts, and installers.

gimp_config_set_xcf_version()
gimp_config_get_xcf_version()GimpMetadata is now visible as a child of GExiv2Metadata. Original thumbnail metadata is removed on export to help prevent problems during format conversion. These changes mainly matter to plug-in authors and script developers, not ordinary image editors.
How to download GIMP 3.0.8 safely
Start with GIMP’s official downloads page. The 3.0.8 announcement links to official builds for Windows, macOS, Linux AppImage, Flatpak, Snap, and Microsoft Store packages. Match the download to your operating system and processor architecture, and prefer a checksum-verified file when one is supplied.
Windows
The official Windows archive contains:

gimp-3.0.8-setup-2.exeThe base installer was archived January 24, revision 1 January 30, and revision 2 February 7, 2026. These are packaging revisions, not separate GIMP feature releases. Use the official Windows archive, match the supported architecture, and avoid random software mirrors.
GIMP 3.0.8 also warned that 32-bit Windows support would soon be dropped. Do not assume a modern GIMP 3 installer supports every Windows edition or architecture; confirm the specific package before installing.
macOS
The official archive provides separate packages for:
- Apple Silicon (
arm64) Macs. - Intel (
x86_64) Macs. - Plug-in developers.
Revision-1 packages were also published. Use the official macOS archive. The GIMP team says it does not provide a package through Apple’s App Store, so App Store listings are third-party packages rather than official GIMP distribution.

The official Linux archive includes:

GIMP-3.0.8-aarch64.AppImageRevision-1 builds and SHA-256/SHA-512 checksum files are also available in the official Linux archive. AppImage is portable, but you may need to mark the file as executable before launching it. Distribution repositories can contain a different GIMP version, and packages from third parties should not automatically be treated as official builds.

Flatpak
GIMP’s official instructions list:

flatpak updateFlatpak integrates with its own update system, but the stable channel may move to a newer GIMP branch rather than remain pinned to 3.0.8. If you need the exact 3.0.8 build, use an appropriate archived package or controlled environment instead of assuming the current Flatpak channel provides it.
Snap
The official Snap commands are:
snap install gimp
snap run gimp
snap refreshAs with Flatpak, the Snap channel may update independently of the specific 3.0.8 release.
Compatibility before you switch
GIMP 2.10 plug-ins and scripts
GIMP 3 introduced API changes that break compatibility with some GIMP 2.10 plug-ins and scripts. GIMP’s documentation notes that older extensions may need to be ported before they work in GIMP 3. If a critical plug-in only supports 2.10, keep a separate 2.10 installation rather than assuming 3.0.8 will load it.
XCF files between branches
XCF is GIMP’s native project format. GIMP 3.0.8 fixes one known grid-color serialization problem affecting GIMP 2.10, but branch compatibility remains feature-dependent. Before moving a production workflow between versions:
- Make a copy of the XCF.
- Open and save the copy in the target version.
- Check layers, masks, text, filters, metadata, and color-management settings.
- Keep an exported TIFF, PNG, or other deliverable as a fallback where appropriate.
Third-party extensions
Plug-ins and scripts are executable code. Install them only from sources you trust, and confirm that they target GIMP 3 rather than GIMP 2.10. Flatpak users may also need to grant or configure access carefully because sandboxing changes where plug-ins and configuration files reside.
Should you install GIMP 3.0.8?
Install GIMP 3.2.4 instead if you are a new user, have no branch-specific requirement, and want the current stable GIMP experience.
Choose GIMP 3.0.8 if:
- A client, project, plug-in, script, or distribution specifically targets GIMP 3.0.
- You need to reproduce an older environment exactly.
- You maintain files or automation that has been validated against the 3.0 branch.
- You need the 3.0.8 fixes while avoiding a branch change during a production project.
Do not choose it solely because it is called “GIMP 3.” GIMP 3.0.8 is a maintenance baseline, not a newer feature alternative to GIMP 3.2.4. Also remember that GIMP 3.0.8 itself does not restore compatibility with all GIMP 2.10 plug-ins and scripts.
