Midjourney Video is an image-to-video tool, not a text-to-film production suite. It animates a still image into a 5-second MP4, with automatic or manual motion prompting, Low Motion and High Motion controls, raw prompting, looping options, smaller batch sizes, and extensions of up to 21 seconds. These features make Midjourney useful for animated key art, storyboards, mood films, concept trailers, and short social clips—but you will still need a separate editor for a finished narrative.

What changed in Midjourney Video?

Midjourney introduced its V1 video model on June 18, 2025. A video-options update followed on August 13, 2025, adding or expanding practical controls such as HD generation, smaller batches, and video extensions. The current workflow is best understood as a set of tools for developing short visual shots rather than as a new standalone storytelling mode.

The important distinction is that Midjourney Video begins with an image. You create or upload a still, use it as the starting frame, and then describe how that scene should move. The image model and video workflow are related but distinct: Midjourney’s V8.1 image model was released on April 30, 2026 and became the default image model on June 10, 2026; it is not itself the video model. See Midjourney’s V8.1 announcement and V1 video announcement.

The current documented limits are straightforward:

  • Initial clips are 5 seconds long.
  • Each extension adds 4 seconds.
  • A clip can be extended up to four times, reaching a maximum of 21 seconds.
  • The result is a short MP4 that can be downloaded and edited elsewhere.

For the official feature list and current interface instructions, consult Midjourney’s Video documentation.

Midjourney Video’s main controls

Automatic animation

Automatic animation generates a motion direction for the starting image without requiring you to write a motion prompt. It is useful for fast exploration, especially when you want Midjourney to interpret the image creatively.

Manual animation

Manual animation lets you describe the shot’s movement. For example:

  • “The camera slowly pushes toward the doorway.”
  • “The character turns toward the distant light.”
  • “Wind moves through the tall grass while the subject remains still.”
  • “The camera tracks left as the train enters the station.”

A motion prompt is not a screenplay. It describes one short visual event—not dialogue, several plot points, a complete scene, or an entire film.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Low Motion and High Motion

Low Motion is the default and is generally the safer choice when preserving the source composition matters. Use it for portraits, product images, landscapes, establishing shots, dramatic still lifes, and atmospheric or emotional beats.

High Motion creates larger camera and subject movements. It is better suited to vehicles, running, dancing, falling objects, major camera moves, and energetic social clips. Midjourney warns that High Motion can also produce unrealistic or glitchy movement, so it is not automatically the better setting.

Raw prompting

The --raw parameter reduces Midjourney’s additional creative styling and gives your written direction more influence. It is useful when you want a more literal interpretation of the motion prompt, but it does not guarantee physically accurate movement.

Extensions

After choosing a clip, use Extend Auto to continue it with the original prompt or Extend Manual to revise the motion direction. Manual extension is preferable when the next shot needs a new action, camera position, or environmental change.

Each extension adds 4 seconds and consumes the same GPU time as the initial video generation. Extending a weak clip can therefore become expensive quickly.

Loop and end-frame options

The video workflow includes the --loop and --end parameters. They can support cyclical backgrounds, repeating environmental movement, and transitions toward an intended final image. They should not be treated as guarantees of frame-perfect shot matching or precise edit-point control.

Smaller batch sizes

Midjourney’s default video batch produces four results, but you can request one, two, or four with --bs 1, --bs 2, or --bs 4. Smaller batches are valuable when you are testing prompts or conserving GPU time.

Batch SD GPU cost HD GPU cost
1 video 2 minutes 7 minutes
2 videos 4 minutes 13 minutes
4 videos 8 minutes 26 minutes

These figures come from Midjourney’s official video documentation.

How to make a Midjourney video

Web workflow

  1. Create a still image in Midjourney or upload one.
  2. Load it into the Starting Frame area of the Imagine bar.
  3. Choose Low Motion or High Motion.
  4. Add an optional motion prompt.
  5. Generate the video.
  6. Review the resulting clips and separate the preferred result if needed.
  7. Use Extend Auto or Extend Manual if the shot benefits from more time.
  8. Download the finished MP4.

The starting image is more important than a generic prompt formula. A clear subject, readable composition, useful depth, and visible environmental details give the system more visual information to animate.

Discord workflow

In Discord, the image must be available as an image URL. If it is stored locally, upload it to Discord first and use the resulting URL.

/imagine [image URL] a slow cinematic push toward the lighthouse --motion low --raw --bs 1

Relevant parameters include:

Parameter Purpose
--motion low Subtle, restrained movement
--motion high Larger subject or camera movement
--raw More influence for the written prompt
--loop Supports looping motion
--end Specifies an intended ending image or state
--bs 1, --bs 2, --bs 4 Requests one, two, or four outputs

The web and Discord interfaces are not identical, so use the current official documentation when a control is unavailable or labelled differently.

How to write better motion prompts

A useful motion prompt usually contains four elements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Subject movement: what the person, object, or creature does.
  2. Camera movement: push, pull, pan, track, tilt, orbit, or locked-off view.
  3. Environmental movement: fog, rain, curtains, grass, smoke, water, or falling debris.
  4. Pace and stability: slow, restrained, energetic, handheld, or a specific element that should remain still.

For an atmospheric shot:

The camera slowly pushes toward the abandoned observatory as fog drifts across the foreground; the building remains stable and imposing, quiet suspense, subtle movement --motion low --raw --bs 1

For an action shot:

The camera tracks alongside the motorcycle as it races through the neon market, banners whipping in the wind, energetic handheld movement --motion high --bs 1

Protect important elements with direct guidance such as “the subject remains centered,” “the mask stays on the character’s face,” “the logo remains readable,” “the camera remains locked,” or “only the curtains move.” These instructions can improve a result but are not guaranteed continuity controls.

Avoid packing a complete plot into one prompt:

A hero discovers a secret city, fights guards, escapes, and returns home

Instead, describe one shot-sized event:

The traveler freezes as a hidden city appears beyond the canyon; the camera slowly moves past the traveler toward the glowing skyline --motion low

Recommended settings for different story beats

Story beat Recommended motion Prompt emphasis Main risk
Establishing shot Low Slow push, drifting atmosphere The result may feel almost static
Suspense reveal Low Gradual move toward a hidden subject The reveal may happen too early
Chase or action High Tracking, rapid movement, environmental reaction Glitches and unstable anatomy
Character close-up Low Subtle expression or eye movement Face or body changes
Dream sequence Low or High Floating camera, light distortion, drifting forms Loss of subject identity
Looping background Low with loop Repeating environmental movement Visible discontinuity at the loop point

Building a story from short clips

The most productive approach is to treat each Midjourney image as a keyframe or shot concept.

  1. Define the story beat. Start with arrival, discovery, hesitation, pursuit, transformation, or departure—not an entire script.
  2. Create a still for each beat. Use consistent visual references, subject descriptions, moodboards, and personalization where appropriate.
  3. Animate only the strongest images. Not every still needs to become a video.
  4. Use Low Motion for emotional and atmospheric beats. This usually gives the composition a better chance of surviving the animation.
  5. Reserve High Motion for movement-led shots. Use it when action is more important than visual stability.
  6. Extend successful clips only. A weak five-second shot rarely becomes strong merely because it is longer.
  7. Assemble the sequence elsewhere. Use a conventional editor for cuts, timing, sound, titles, transitions, captions, color finishing, and delivery formats.

This workflow fits mood films, concept trailers, animated key art, visual poems, music-video inserts, fashion and product atmospherics, world-building reels, pitch-deck animations, storyboard previews, and looping backgrounds.

It fits poorly when the project depends on dialogue, exact lip sync, long-form continuity, precise action choreography, stable multi-character interaction, a complete sound mix, or a production-ready timeline inside one application.

Plans, resolution, and GPU costs

As listed by Midjourney on August 18, 2026, all plans can generate video in Fast Mode. Pro and Mega users can generate SD video in Relax Mode, while Standard, Pro, and Mega users can generate HD video in Fast Mode. Prices and feature access can change, so check the current plan comparison before subscribing.

Plan Monthly price Annual price Video-related access listed
Basic $10 $96/year Fast video generation
Standard $30 $288/year Fast video and HD video
Pro $60 $576/year Fast video, SD Relax, and HD Fast
Mega $120 $1,152/year Fast video, SD Relax, and HD Fast

Basic or Standard is the sensible starting point for low-volume experimentation. Pro or Mega becomes more relevant when Relax Mode, Stealth Mode, or sustained video experimentation justifies the higher cost. Relax Mode can reduce pressure on Fast time, but it involves queueing and is not equivalent to immediate processing.

Midjourney Video’s limitations

It is image-to-video, not conventional text-to-video

You need a starting image. A written prompt controls motion around that visual foundation; it does not replace the keyframe with a complete text-only scene-generation workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short duration limits narrative scope

A 5-second starting clip and a 21-second maximum are useful for shots and fragments, but they do not solve continuity or long-form storytelling. A longer project requires multiple generations and external editing.

Character continuity is not guaranteed

Faces, hands, clothing, objects, and architecture can change during complex motion. A cleaner source image, Low Motion, simpler actions, and several generated variants may improve the odds, but continuity-critical productions should not treat these as guarantees.

Complex physics can fail

High Motion may produce energetic results but can also create strange anatomy, unstable objects, or implausible camera movement. Midjourney’s strength is visual interpretation rather than exact physical simulation.

There is no documented complete audio or editing pipeline

The documented feature scope covers starting frames, motion, extensions, batches, parameters, and MP4 downloads. It does not describe an integrated story timeline, dialogue system, sound-design workflow, voice pipeline, or final delivery environment. Plan to use separate tools for editing, sound, captions, color, and export.

Commercial and privacy terms require separate checking

Do not infer commercial rights from a subscription price. Verify the current terms for your project, especially when using client assets, recognizable people, trademarks, confidential concepts, or paid distribution. Plan availability and privacy features can also change.

Common problems and practical fixes

The result looks almost static

Try High Motion, add a specific camera move, describe environmental movement, or choose a source image with depth and visible motion cues. High Motion is not automatically better; use it only when the added movement is worth the increased risk of glitches.

The face or body changes

Use a simpler source image, avoid several actions in one five-second clip, choose Low Motion for close-ups, and generate multiple variants. If continuity is essential, treat the result as an impression or concept shot rather than a final take.

An extension changes the scene

Choose Extend Manual and restate the desired action, camera position, subject identity, environment, and stability requirements. Extend Auto continues from the original prompt, while Manual gives you a chance to redirect the next section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GPU time disappears quickly

  • Change the batch from four outputs to one.
  • Test in SD before committing to HD.
  • Do not extend weak clips.
  • Use Fast Mode for shots that genuinely need priority.
  • Reserve HD for selected or final candidates.

Midjourney vs. Runway, Pika, and Luma

There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on whether your priority is a particular still-image aesthetic, motion control, output volume, social effects, model variety, editing workflow, privacy, or commercial terms.

Platform Best fit Trade-off
Midjourney Animating stylized keyframes and developing short visual shots Image-led workflow, short clips, and less predictable continuity
Runway Users seeking a more video-centered generative workflow and higher-volume production Plan limits and model availability change; it may be less suited to users who mainly want Midjourney’s image aesthetic
Pika Social-first effects, transformations, and short-form experimentation Credit-based workflow and a different creative focus
Luma Dream Machine Creators who want multiple models, higher-resolution options, and credit-based generation Potentially unnecessary for users who only need to animate a few Midjourney images

Runway’s current plan guidance is available from its official plan documentation. Pika lists its plans and supported tools on its pricing page, while Luma lists current plan and model information on its pricing page. These products change frequently, so compare current allowances, resolution, model access, commercial terms, and queue behavior before buying.

Is Midjourney Video worth using for storytelling?

Yes—if “storytelling” means developing evocative shots, animated key art, visual poems, mood films, storyboards, concept trailers, or short social sequences. Midjourney is particularly compelling when the starting image matters more than exact temporal control and when you already work inside its image-generation ecosystem.

It is a weaker choice when you need script-to-video generation, long clips, dialogue, lip sync, exact choreography, stable characters across many shots, native sound, or a complete editorial timeline. In those cases, a video-centered platform or a conventional production workflow is more appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best way to use Midjourney Video is to think like a shot designer: make a strong still, define one visual event, select the least aggressive motion that serves the idea, test cheaply with a small batch, extend only successful clips, and edit the finished shots elsewhere.
