Runway’s Gen-2 update helped make AI-generated video feel real to a mass audience. A text prompt or still image could become a short moving clip with cinematic lighting, atmospheric motion and camera-like movement—at least in the best examples. But Gen-2 is no longer available: Runway fully deprecated it on May 11, 2025.
That makes Gen-2 a historical milestone rather than a current Runway feature. Here is what the update changed, why its demonstrations impressed people, where the model failed, and what creators should use instead.
What was Runway Gen-2?
Announced in February 2023, Gen-2 was one of the early consumer-facing generative-video systems. Runway described it as a way to generate novel video from text, images or video clips.

The result was usually a short clip—not a finished scene, film or automated production pipeline. Its significance was accessibility: people without a camera, location, actors or animation equipment could begin exploring moving images from an ordinary-language prompt.
What did the update improve?
Runway’s contemporary announcement said the update brought “major improvements” to both text-to-video and image-to-video generation, specifically in fidelity and consistency. The announcement is available on Runway’s LinkedIn page.
In practical terms:
- Fidelity meant a better visual resemblance to the requested subject, style or reference.
- Consistency meant that the subject, objects and environment were more likely to retain their identity from frame to frame.
- Motion was more likely to flow as a video rather than look like unrelated still images rapidly changing.
Runway did not publish a complete technical changelog, benchmark table, exact model version number or comprehensive before-and-after testing methodology with that announcement. “Major improvement” should therefore be treated as Runway’s characterization, not as a quantified independent result.
Why did the demonstrations look revolutionary?
Gen-2 made several difficult-looking tasks accessible in a single interface:
- Turning a sentence into a short moving scene.
- Animating a still image.
- Creating stylized landscapes, product concepts and mood pieces.
- Transforming the look of existing footage.
- Generating atmosphere such as smoke, fog, fire, water and wind.
- Exploring storyboards, establishing shots and visual ideas before conventional production.
For viewers, the striking part was not merely image quality. It was the apparent conversion of language into motion. A creator could describe a scene, receive a result and iterate without first building a set, hiring a crew or learning 3D animation.
But a successful three-second atmospheric shot was much easier than a sustained narrative scene. A clip could look cinematic while failing to depict the requested action, preserve a character or obey a camera instruction.

What did “better consistency” actually mean?
Consistency was useful but narrower than many headlines implied. It could mean that a face, object or background changed less dramatically between adjacent frames. It did not establish dependable character continuity across multiple shots, perfect anatomy, stable hands, accurate object permanence or a production-ready visual-effects workflow.

- Hands, faces and human anatomy.
- Small objects and text.
- Reflections and transparent materials.
- Fast movement and occlusion.
- Multiple people interacting.
- Objects entering or leaving a frame in a prescribed order.
Image-to-video and text-to-video also presented different problems. Text-to-video had to invent both composition and motion. Image-to-video constrained the composition but still had to infer how the subject should move. Video-to-video preserved more existing structure while transforming its appearance. Success in one mode should not automatically be generalized to the others.
The independent reality check
Contemporary testing found that the visual polish of Gen-2 did not always translate into reliable control. TechCrunch’s testing reported problems with prompt interpretation and specific camera instructions, including a slow zoom. The model could produce an attractive clip that was semantically wrong.
That distinction matters. A model can deliver compelling lighting, color and composition while failing at physical causality, exact object counts, anatomy or the requested narrative action. Generic people, broken complex movements and unstable subjects were not unusual edge cases for early generative video.
TechCrunch also reported that Runway’s paper described training on an internal dataset of approximately 240 million images and 6.4 million video clips. That figure should be understood as a claim attributed to the paper, not an independently audited description of the complete training corpus.
Why demos looked better than ordinary generations
Promotional reels are evidence of what a system can produce, not of what it produces reliably. Several factors can make a demonstration look substantially better than a first attempt:

- Unsuccessful generations are omitted.
- The prompt may have been refined repeatedly.
- Only the strongest take is shown.
- Clips may be cropped, slowed, upscaled or edited together.
- Short duration hides continuity problems.
- Viewers may mistake visual style for accurate physical action.
The fair question was never simply, “Can Gen-2 make one impressive clip?” It was, “Can it repeatedly make the exact shot required at an acceptable cost and with enough continuity for the project?” For most production-critical work, the answer was no.
Where Gen-2 worked best
Gen-2 was most useful when the creator needed a visually suggestive shot rather than precise, repeatable choreography. Favorable applications included:
- Atmospheric landscapes and establishing shots.
- Smoke, clouds, water, fire, fog and other environmental motion.
- Abstract or surreal transformations.
- Stylized animation of still artwork.
- Product, fashion and advertising concepts.
- Storyboards and previsualization.
- Short social-media loops and mood pieces.
More difficult assignments included dialogue, lip synchronization, exact text, detailed hand activity, complex sports or dance, two-person interactions, precise camera paths, long-duration scenes and continuity across multiple shots.
What Gen-2 removed—and what it did not
For certain concept shots, Gen-2 reduced the need for a physical camera, location, set, specialized equipment and manual animation. It could accelerate visual ideation and let a small team explore more possibilities.
It did not remove the need for editing, shot selection, regeneration, color correction, sound design, continuity supervision, art direction or legal review. Dependable actors, dialogue, physical interactions and long-form continuity still required conventional production or a carefully managed hybrid workflow.
The most accurate description is that Gen-2 was a shot-generation and ideation tool, not a one-click movie studio.

Is Runway Gen-2 still available?
No. Runway began revoking access in mid-March 2025 and says Gen-2 became unavailable to all users on May 11, 2025. Its deprecation notice says the model cannot be re-enabled and has been replaced by newer models.
Old tutorials may also refer to Gen-2-specific menus and Motion Brush. Runway says Motion Brush was specific to Gen-2 and is not available on newer models. A tutorial promising that readers can currently activate Gen-2 is therefore out of date.
What replaced Gen-2?
Runway’s deprecation documentation recommends Gen-4.5 Video as its current successor. Runway’s platform also lists newer Runway and third-party models, including Gen-4 Turbo, Aleph 2.0, Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1 and Seedance 2.0. The available models, interfaces, regions, credit rates and commercial terms can vary, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Gen-4.5: The most direct current successor for readers interested in Runway’s own generative-video lineage.
- Gen-4 Turbo: A potentially better fit for faster or more cost-sensitive iteration where available.
- Aleph 2.0: More relevant when transforming or editing existing footage rather than generating an entirely new clip.
- Kling, Veo and Seedance: Third-party models surfaced within Runway; their behavior, availability and licensing should be checked separately.

- Start with a strong still image or reference frame when composition and subject identity matter.
- Choose a current model rather than trying to recreate an old Gen-2 tutorial.
- Describe the subject, action and camera behavior separately.
- Begin with one simple movement and one camera movement.
- Generate several variations before judging the concept.
- Inspect hands, faces, edges, text, reflections and background continuity.
- Keep the shot short if temporal errors become visible.
- Edit successful clips together in a conventional editor.
- Add sound, dialogue, titles and final color treatment separately.
- Check current credit limits, export specifications and commercial terms before delivery.
If the output ignores the prompt, simplify it. If the subject changes identity, use a stronger reference and reduce motion complexity. If camera movement is wrong, request one movement instead of combining zoom, orbit, tracking and handheld effects. If continuity requirements exceed the model’s reliability, conventional footage, 3D, compositing or a hybrid workflow may be the better choice.

The listed Gen-4.5 rate was 60 credits for five seconds, or 12 credits per second. That is the cost of a generation, not necessarily the cost of a usable shot: failed attempts, alternate takes, upscaling and other operations can multiply the practical total. Standard and Pro monthly credits do not roll over; Max allows up to one month of unused credits to roll over. Prices and terms can change, so verify the live pricing page before subscribing.
Do not subscribe expecting Gen-2 access. The free plan is useful for testing current tools, while paid plans make sense only when the available credits and model access match the project’s iteration needs.
The verdict
Runway’s Gen-2 update deserved the attention it received. Historically, it helped move generative video from an obscure technical demonstration toward an accessible creative tool. Visually, its best short clips showed that text- and image-conditioned video could create motion, atmosphere and cinematic ideas with remarkably little equipment.

But the hype was easy to overread. Gen-2 did not provide dependable prompt control, precise camera operation, stable anatomy or long-form continuity. It was impressive as a generator of short visual possibilities—not a replacement for filmmakers or a complete production pipeline.
As of 2026, Gen-2 is a retired model. Readers inspired by its old demonstrations should use a current Runway model, begin with a small credit commitment and judge the tool against the exact shot they need—not against a curated highlight reel.
