Canva does not use one universal Photoshop-style paint-bucket tool. Instead, select the object you want to color, open its color control in the floating toolbar, and choose a preset or custom color. The correct steps depend on whether you are coloring a shape, page background, text, graphic, table cell, drawing, or image.
How to fill a shape with color in Canva
To color a basic Canva shape:
- Open your design and select Elements.
- Add a shape, such as a rectangle, circle, or line, if one is not already on the page.
- Click the shape on desktop, or tap it in the Canva mobile app.
- Choose the colored square or color control in the floating toolbar.
- Select a color from the palette, or open the custom-color option for a specific shade.
- Click or tap outside the shape to finish.
You can then resize, rotate, reposition, or layer the shape like any other design element. On mobile, the color control may be lower in the screen’s toolbar; swipe across the toolbar or open More if it is not immediately visible.
Canva’s help guidance describes this as changing an element’s color rather than using a separate fill command. If a color icon does not appear after you select the object, that element may not support direct recoloring. See Canva’s element-color guidance.
How to use a custom color or hex code
After opening an element’s color panel, you will usually see some combination of these options:
#1 Best Overall
- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
- A preset color palette.
- A rainbow or custom-color tile for choosing another shade.
- A hex color field, where the current editor exposes one.
- Saved document colors or brand colors.
- An eyedropper for sampling a color from the design, where available.
Enter a hex value such as #2E7D32 if Canva shows a hex field, then apply the color. Interface labels and available controls can vary by device, browser, account, and editor rollout, so do not assume every Canva design will display the same panel.
How to change a Canva page’s background color
A page background is different from a shape placed on top of the page.
- Select an empty area of the page itself.
- Choose Background color in the floating toolbar.
- Select a solid color or a gradient tile.
- Choose Add a colour or the equivalent custom-color option if the shade you need is not listed.
For Canva’s documented background workflow, see Canva’s instructions for adding a background.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you cannot select the page, another object may cover the entire canvas. Click an exposed margin, temporarily move the covering object, unlock it, or use Position and the layer controls to select the page. A full-page rectangle can look like the background while remaining a separate element.
How to apply a gradient
For a page, choose Background color and select a gradient tile when one is available. Gradient controls for shapes and graphics depend on the selected element and Canva’s current editor. A gradient may appear in the color panel, as a dedicated option, or under another editing control; there is no single path that applies to every shape or graphic.
If the selected object has no gradient option, use two overlapping shapes, a gradient element from Elements, or a gradient image as an alternative.
How to change text color or highlight color
Text color
- Select the text box.
- Highlight specific text if you want to change only part of it, or leave the text box selected to affect all applicable text.
- Choose Text color in the toolbar.
- Select a preset or custom color.
Text color changes the letters themselves.
Text highlighting

How to recolor a graphic or illustration
Select the graphic and look for one or more colored squares in the toolbar.
- One color control: the graphic may be a single-color asset.
- Several color controls: each swatch may represent a separate part of a multicolor vector graphic. Change one swatch to recolor that component, or change several to create a coordinated palette.
- No color control: the asset may be a flattened image, a non-recolorable graphic, or an element whose colors are locked by its format.
If you selected a group, double-click or enter the group and select the inner graphic. You can also use the layer controls to target the correct component. Canva’s element-color help confirms that direct color changes are available only when the selected element exposes a color control.
How to change a table cell’s fill color
Tables use different controls from ordinary shapes:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Select the table.
- Select the individual cell, row, or column, depending on the controls shown in your editor.
- Look for the cell or fill-color control.
- Choose the color you want.
- Repeat for other cells, or use a copy-style option where Canva provides one.
Selecting the whole table may show table-level options rather than the fill control for one cell. If the cell does not respond, click again until the individual cell is selected.
How to color a freehand drawing
With Canva’s drawing tool, choose the pen or drawing tool and set the stroke color before drawing. If the editor allows a completed stroke to be edited, select it afterward and use its color control.
A freehand stroke is generally a colored line, not a closed region that can be filled. To create a solid colored area, place a colored shape beneath the drawing. Do not assume every Canva drawing mode supports an interior fill for closed sketches.
How to recolor an image
A JPG or PNG photo is a raster image, not an editable vector graphic. You normally cannot select one object inside the photo and recolor it using the ordinary element-color control.
Recommended Free Tools
For an image background, Canva provides a separate adjustment workflow where available:

- Refresh Rate: 180Hz | Response Time: Up to 1ms (VRB) | HDR Ready | Pixel Pitch: 0.233mm

- Ergonomic Tilt: -5° to 20°
- Ports: 1 x Display Port 1.2, 2 x HDMI Port 2.0 & 1 x Audio Out (Display Port and HDMI Cable Included)
- Select the image.
- Choose Edit Image.
- Open Adjust.
- Choose Select area, then Background.
- Adjust controls such as temperature, tint, brightness, or vibrance.
This changes the appearance of the selected photo area; it is not the same as applying a solid fill to a shape. The available controls may depend on the image, account, and current Canva editor. See Canva’s image-background feature page.
For precise recoloring, replace the photo with an editable SVG or vector asset when possible, or use a colored overlay.
How to make a transparent color overlay
A colored overlay is often the most reliable way to tint a photo or page:
- Add a rectangle or another shape.
- Resize it over the image or page area.
- Choose the desired color.
- Open Transparency and reduce the opacity.
- Use Position or the layer controls to place the overlay above the image.
If the image disappears, lower the overlay’s opacity or check that the image is underneath rather than hidden behind another object. The exact toolbar location can vary between Canva’s desktop and mobile interfaces.
How to match an existing color
To match a color already used in the design, select the object you want to recolor, open its color panel, and use the eyedropper if Canva provides it. Sample the color from another object or image, then apply it.
Canva’s cited help documentation says the eyedropper is available in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and the Canva desktop app. It may not appear in every browser, mobile device, account, or editor rollout. If it is unavailable, select the source object, copy its displayed color value if Canva exposes one, and paste that value into the target’s custom-color field.
Sampling a photograph may produce a color that looks different from a flat swatch because nearby pixels, lighting, transparency, and image effects affect its appearance.
How to copy a color or style
Where Canva provides a copy-style or paint-roller control, select the source object first and apply its style to the destination. Depending on the object type, this may copy more than color, including typography, borders, effects, and other formatting.

Canva’s element-color guidance mentions a roller-style control for copying and applying the same color between charts, but behavior is context-dependent. Check the destination after applying the style and undo if unwanted formatting was copied.
Why can’t I fill my Canva element with color?
Try these fixes in order:
- Check the object type. A JPG, PNG, or flattened asset usually cannot be recolored like a vector shape.
- Check whether the object is locked. Unlock it before editing.
- Enter the group. Double-click or select the inner component rather than the group container.
- Use Position/Layers. Another object may be covering the item you want.
- Check the toolbar overflow. On a narrow desktop window or mobile screen, the color control may be under More.
- Try a supported desktop environment. This is especially useful when you need the eyedropper.
- Replace the asset. Choose a recolorable graphic or place a colored shape behind or above the non-editable asset.
If no color icon appears after you have correctly selected and unlocked the object, Canva indicates that the element may not support direct color changes.
Do you need Canva Pro to fill color?
No. Canva Free is sufficient for ordinary recoloring of shapes, text, and page backgrounds. Do not upgrade solely to change a basic fill color.

Pro may be useful if you also need premium assets, Brand Kits, background removal, resizing, or advanced image-editing tools. Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fill a transparent shape in Canva?
Select the shape, open its color control, and choose a color. If you mean a transparent colored overlay, adjust the shape’s Transparency setting after applying the color.
How do I change the color of a PNG in Canva?
A PNG usually cannot be recolored with the element-color control. Use a supported image-adjustment workflow, place a transparent colored shape over it, or replace it with a recolorable vector graphic.
Can I fill a drawing with color in Canva?
Usually, Canva drawing strokes use a line color rather than an interior fill. Place a colored shape beneath the drawing unless your current drawing tool specifically offers fill behavior.
How do I change only part of a Canva graphic?
Select a multicolor graphic and change the individual color swatch corresponding to the part you want to alter. If only one swatch appears, independent component recoloring may not be supported.
How do I remove a text highlight?
Select the highlighted text, open the highlight control, and choose No color where that option is available.
