Image Wand turns a rough drawing in Apple Notes into an AI-generated image. On a compatible iPhone or iPad, open the Notes drawing tools, sketch with your finger or Apple Pencil, tap Image Wand, circle the sketch, describe what it should become, choose Animation, Illustration, or Sketch, and tap Done to keep the result in the note.
Image Wand is available only on supported Apple Intelligence devices, software versions, languages, and regions. This guide covers the complete workflow, including setup, prompting, refinement, saving, and fixes for when Image Wand does not appear.
What Image Wand does
Image Wand is an Apple Intelligence image-generation feature built into the Notes app. It interprets a rough sketch, nearby typed text, or surrounding images and generates a new image based on that material. It is designed for visual brainstorming rather than precise tracing: the result is an AI-generated interpretation, so it may change proportions, details, colors, or composition.

Image Wand is different from the other tools involved:
- Image Wand: Generates an image from a sketch or nearby note content.
- Markup and Handwriting Tools: Provide the drawing surface where you make the initial sketch.
- Apple Pencil: Optional iPad input. A finger is sufficient on both iPhone and iPad.
- Image Playground: A separate Apple Intelligence image-generation experience with its own interface. It is related to Image Wand, but it is not the same workflow.
Image Wand is useful for turning thumbnail ideas, classroom notes, character shapes, diagrams, objects, and scene concepts into visual references. It is not a replacement for a full illustration, vector, layout, photo-editing, or production-art application when you need layers, exact geometry, typography control, or repeatable character consistency.

Check compatibility before you start
A compatible device alone is not enough. Apple Intelligence availability also depends on software, storage, language, and region.
Supported iPhone models
Apple’s current Apple Intelligence requirements include:
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16 models and later
The standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are not included in Apple’s current Apple Intelligence device requirements.
Supported iPad models
Compatible iPads include:
- iPad mini with A17 Pro
- iPad Air with an M1 chip or later
- iPad Pro with an M1 chip or later
Apple’s compatible-device list and iPad guide should be checked for the exact model and operating-system version, because feature availability can change. See Apple’s current Apple Intelligence requirements and its compatible iPad information.

Required settings and software
- Update the device to the latest available version of iOS or iPadOS.
- Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence.
- Allow the on-device Apple Intelligence models to download.
Apple lists iOS 18.1 or later and iPadOS 18.1 or later as the general Apple Intelligence software floor. Image Wand was introduced with iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2 or later, so using the latest available release is the safest practical requirement.
Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi and power if the model download is taking a long time. Apple also lists approximately 7 GB of available storage as a requirement. The device language and Siri language must match and use a supported language. Feature availability can be narrower than Apple Intelligence’s general language list, so check Apple’s current regional and language information rather than assuming every Apple Intelligence language includes Image Wand.
Availability can also vary by region. Apple lists restrictions for some locations, including mainland China. Do not treat changing the device region as a general fix for an unavailable feature.
How to use Image Wand on iPhone
You do not need an Apple Pencil. The iPhone workflow supports drawing with your finger.
- Open Notes.
- Open an existing note or tap the control to create a new note.
- Tap the Handwriting Tools button to open the drawing toolbar.
- Draw a rough sketch with your finger. It does not need to be polished; use it to establish the subject, shape, pose, or layout.
- If Image Wand is not visible, swipe left across the drawing toolbar to reveal more tools.
- Tap Image Wand.
- Circle the sketch you want to use.
- Enter a description of what the sketch is meant to represent.
- Tap the send or arrow button to generate results.
- Swipe through the generated images.
- Tap Style and choose Animation, Illustration, or Sketch.
- If necessary, tap the generated description, change it, and submit the revised description.
- Tap Done to keep the selected result in the note.
A rough sketch is often enough. For example, a few lines showing a boat, horizon, and sun can establish the broad composition. The written description then supplies details such as the setting, color, mood, and intended visual treatment.

The iPad workflow is similar, with the option to draw using a finger or a compatible Apple Pencil.
- Open Notes.
- Open a note or create a new one.
- Tap Handwriting Tools.
- Draw a rough sketch with your finger or Apple Pencil.
- Tap Image Wand.
- Circle the sketch.
- Enter a description of the subject and desired image.
- Tap the send or arrow button.
- Swipe through the generated results.
- Choose Animation, Illustration, or Sketch.
- Edit the description if you want to change the result, then submit the revision.
- Tap Done or the checkmark shown by your version of the interface.
Apple Pencil is useful when you want more controlled lines, but it is not an Image Wand requirement. The iPad’s Apple Intelligence compatibility is what matters. Interface placement can vary by iPadOS release and screen layout. On newer iPadOS versions, Apple’s documentation may refer to creating a new “board” from Notes, so the exact button label may differ slightly.

How to write a better Image Wand description
Do not merely repeat the shapes in the sketch. Explain what those shapes represent. A useful formula is:
Subject + setting + visual details + mood or composition + preferred style
For example:
- “A small red sailboat on a calm lake at sunset, viewed from the shore, with warm orange light.”
- “A friendly robot watering flowers in a garden, children’s storybook illustration, simple rounded shapes.”
- “A modern cabin in a snowy forest, viewed from the front, cozy lights in the windows, architectural concept sketch.”
Use concrete nouns and describe the parts that matter most. Mention the viewpoint if composition matters, such as “front view,” “overhead view,” or “seen from the side.” Add a setting, color, mood, or lighting direction when those details are important.
A vague sketch combined with a vague description gives Image Wand more room to interpret the idea. If the first result is confused, make the subject more explicit rather than adding many unrelated details.
Choosing an Image Wand style
Image Wand provides three documented styles:

|---|---|
| Animation | A stylized, animated-looking interpretation. |
| Illustration | A more conventional illustrated treatment for characters, scenes, or ideas. |
| Sketch | A looser drawn or concept-sketch appearance. |
These are the Image Wand styles documented by Apple. They are not an unlimited collection of artistic presets, and Image Wand should not be treated as a guaranteed photorealistic image generator. Broader Image Playground descriptions and capabilities should not be assumed to apply identically inside Notes.
Refine a generated image instead of starting over
Image Wand supports iterative refinement. Tap the generated description, modify it, and submit the change. For example, you might change “a dog in a park” to “a small golden retriever sitting beneath a large oak tree in an autumn park, viewed at eye level.”

Apple also describes a workflow in which created images retain the elements used to make them, including sketches, descriptions, characters, and people. Through the Image Playground control associated with the created image, you may be able to:
- Add a new element.
- Modify an existing description.
- Remove an element.
- Tap Done when finished.
This is an iterative generation workflow, not guaranteed pixel-level editing. If the composition has become confused, simplify the description or return to a clearer sketch.

Image Wand can use words and images near the selected area, not only an explicit drawing. This can be useful for turning a lesson outline, written story idea, product note, or nearby reference image into a visual.
- Open a note containing typed text or images.
- Open the handwriting tools.
- Tap Image Wand.
- Circle an area near the relevant text or image content.
- Add a description if needed, then submit it.
This mode depends on the content surrounding the selected area. It is not necessarily the same as opening a blank text-to-image prompt field, so select the relevant note content carefully and explain any important context in your description.
Save and share the result
When you are satisfied with the generated image, tap Done or the checkmark shown by your version of Notes. The image remains in the note. You can then use the normal Notes sharing or export controls available on your device.
Apple’s documentation establishes the save action but does not specify one universal file format, resolution, or export behavior for every current software version. Do not assume that the image is automatically exported to Photos.
Image Wand is missing: troubleshooting checklist
Work through these checks in order:
- Verify the model. Confirm that the device is an iPhone 15 Pro or later supported iPhone, an iPhone 16 model or later, an iPad mini with A17 Pro, or an M1-or-later iPad Air or iPad Pro.
- Update the operating system. Install the latest available iOS or iPadOS.
- Check Apple Intelligence. Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and confirm that Apple Intelligence is enabled.
- Wait for model downloads. Keep the device on Wi-Fi and power while the on-device models download.
- Free storage. Apple lists approximately 7 GB of available storage for Apple Intelligence.
- Match languages. The device language and Siri language must match and be supported for the feature.
- Check region and language availability. Apple says availability varies by device, language, and region.
- Reveal the iPhone toolbar control. In Notes, open the drawing toolbar and swipe left if Image Wand is not immediately visible.
- Restart Notes or the device. After enabling Apple Intelligence or completing the model download, close and reopen Notes. Restart the device if the control still does not appear.
Image Wand is a Notes feature, so it will not appear as a general-purpose button in every app. Open a regular note and activate the drawing tools first.

If the generated image is poor
Image Wand does not promise to preserve every line or proportion of your sketch. Apple warns that generative outputs can vary and may be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive.
Try these changes:
- Draw a clearer silhouette with fewer ambiguous lines.
- Circle only the relevant sketch instead of unrelated note content.
- State exactly what the sketch represents.
- Add the setting, viewpoint, color, and mood.
- Try Animation, Illustration, and Sketch separately.
- Make one change at a time when refining.
- Replace vague words with concrete nouns.
- Remove unnecessary prompt details if the result combines unrelated ideas.
Generated images should not be treated as authoritative evidence, especially for technical diagrams, historical details, medical content, branded assets, or identifiable people. Review the result before using it in teaching, design work, or communication.
Image Wand versus Image Playground

Both are Apple Intelligence image tools, but they are not identical interfaces. Image Wand is especially convenient when the idea already exists as a quick drawing or note.
Is Apple Pencil, ChatGPT, or iCloud required?
Apple Pencil is optional. Apple documents finger drawing on iPhone and finger or Apple Pencil input on iPad.

ChatGPT is not required for the basic Image Wand sketch-to-image workflow. Apple documents ChatGPT as an optional integration for selected Apple Intelligence experiences; it is not a prerequisite for Image Wand. See Apple’s ChatGPT integration guide.
iCloud is not required for basic local generation. iCloud Notes syncing can be useful if you want notes available across Apple devices, but it is not the core requirement for creating an Image Wand image.
Should you buy a device or Apple Pencil for Image Wand?
Image Wand is not a separately purchased app or subscription. If your current device is unsupported, an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad may provide access, but Image Wand alone is a weak reason to upgrade unless you also value the device’s broader capabilities.
An iPad is the better fit for frequent sketching, classroom work, design ideation, or a larger Notes canvas. Apple Pencil can make drawing more comfortable and controlled, but it is poor value for occasional rough shapes because a finger works.
