Do not use “Flip” to turn a landscape photo into a portrait. Flip mirrors an image. To make an upright horizontal photo vertical, use Crop. To preserve the entire photo, use a portrait canvas with added space. Use Rotate only when the image itself is sideways.
This distinction prevents the three most common mistakes: mirroring the subject, stretching the image, and cutting away important content without realizing it.
Landscape and portrait: what are you actually changing?
Landscape orientation means the image is wider than it is tall. Portrait orientation means it is taller than it is wide. That describes the shape of the frame—not necessarily the subject. A portrait photograph of a person can still be landscape-oriented if the camera captured a wide frame.

“Change landscape to portrait” can mean several different operations:

| What you want | Use | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Turn a sideways image upright | Rotate | The image turns, commonly by 90 degrees. |
| Make the photo itself vertical | Crop | Side portions are removed to create a taller frame. |
| Keep every original pixel | Portrait canvas | Space is added above and below or around the photo. |
| Create more background around a subject | Generative expand | New, synthetic content is created around the original. |
| Change only pixel dimensions | Resize | The file becomes larger or smaller; its visual shape may stay the same. |
| Reverse left and right | Flip | The image is mirrored and does not become portrait-oriented. |
A flip button is therefore usually the wrong control. Mirroring a person, sign, product, or text reverses left and right; it does not convert a wide composition into a tall one.
The fastest method: crop the landscape photo into portrait
Crop when the subject is upright and you want the exported photograph itself to fill a vertical frame. This is usually the cleanest result for a person, single product, or central subject.
- Open a reputable browser-based image editor.
- Upload the original photo.
- Choose Crop, not Flip.
- Select a portrait ratio such as 4:5, 2:3, or 9:16, or enter custom dimensions.
- Move the image inside the crop frame. Protect faces, hands, products, text, horizons, and other important details.
- Check the result at a useful viewing size rather than relying only on a tiny thumbnail.
- Apply the crop and export a new copy.
Keep the original file. Cropping removes pixels from the exported result, and the missing edges cannot reliably be recovered later.
What the common ratios mean
| Ratio | Shape | Typical use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Square | Square posts, avatars, and layouts | Removes more from the sides of a wide photo than a 4:5 crop. |
| 4:5 | Moderately vertical | Feed-style images and general portrait layouts | A useful compromise between subject size and lost side content. |
| 2:3 | Traditional portrait proportion | Portrait photography and print-style compositions | Still removes substantial width from a landscape original. |
| 9:16 | Very tall | Stories, Shorts, Reels, and full-screen mobile designs | Usually removes the most horizontal content when cropping a landscape photo. |
These are working ratios, not permanent rules for every platform. Upload systems change, may accept several ratios, and may crop previews differently. Check the destination’s current guidance before exporting.
The crop math: how much will disappear?
Suppose the original image is 4000 × 2667 pixels. If you keep the full height and crop to a target width-to-height ratio:
new width = original height × target ratio
For a 4:5 crop:
2667 × 4 ÷ 5 ≈ 2134 pixels wide
The crop removes approximately 1866 pixels of total width—about 933 pixels from each side if it is centered.

For a 9:16 crop:
2667 × 9 ÷ 16 ≈ 1500 pixels wide
That removes far more side content. The taller the target frame, the more carefully you must reposition the crop.

Canva’s documented crop workflow lets you upload an image, choose an aspect ratio, and reposition the image inside the frame. Its image-resizer workflow also supports custom dimensions and exports such as JPG and PNG. See Canva’s crop guide and image-resizer guide.
- Open Canva’s online cropper or image resizer.
- Upload the landscape photo.
- Choose Crop and select a portrait ratio, or create a design with custom portrait dimensions.
- Drag the image within the frame until the composition works.
- Download the result as JPG for an ordinary photograph or PNG when transparency or graphic sharpness matters.
If you need text, borders, branding, captions, or a blurred background, create a portrait design and place the original image inside it instead of cropping it aggressively.
Canva’s plan features change. Its pricing page currently associates some resizing tools with Pro, while basic editing and free creation remain available. Check Canva’s current plan details before assuming a particular resize feature is included. A paid subscription is not automatically necessary for a one-off crop.
How to do it in Adobe Express
Adobe Express provides a Resize image Quick Action with an Aspect ratio menu for preset sizes or layouts. The current documented workflow is described in Adobe’s resize-image instructions.

Adobe’s image Quick Actions page also lists crop and resize tools. Interface labels and plan availability can change, so treat the purpose of the control—crop, canvas, or resize—as more reliable than a particular button location. Adobe lists a free plan and paid individual plans on its current pricing page; advanced features and assets may be plan-dependent.

How to do it in Fotor
Fotor’s help documentation gives a direct manual crop route:
- Upload the image to Fotor’s Photo Editor.
- Open Adjust.
- Choose Crop.
- Select a preset size or enter width and height manually.
- Use the crop grid to position the subject.
- Select Apply, then download the result.
Fotor also documents a Keep Aspect Ratio control. Use it when scaling proportionally and you do not want the image stretched. A portrait crop is different: it deliberately changes the visible frame and removes content. Read Fotor’s crop instructions and resize guidance together.
Fotor’s Basic plan is listed as free, but its current plan information includes limitations such as storage, credits, and potentially watermarked exports. Check Fotor’s pricing page before relying on a free export for finished work.
How to do it in Pixlr
Pixlr is useful when you need to understand the difference between the image and the canvas. Its documentation explains that changing canvas size does not necessarily change the image itself, while separate controls handle layers, objects, and rotation.
- Open Pixlr Express or Pixlr Editor.
- Upload the photo.
- Use the crop tool when you want the photograph itself to become portrait-shaped.
- Use canvas-size controls when you want to preserve the complete landscape image inside a portrait frame.
- Use transform or rotation controls only when the image needs turning.
- Save or export a new copy.
Changing the canvas to portrait does not automatically convert the photograph to portrait. It can simply create extra space around a landscape image. Pixlr’s explanation of canvas, image, layer, and rotation controls is especially useful when the goal is to preserve the entire original.
How to keep the entire landscape photo
If the subject spans the full width, several people must remain visible, or the wide composition is the point, cropping may be the wrong solution. Create a portrait canvas and place the complete landscape photo inside it.

- Convert JPG, JPEG & PNG to PDF
- Select multiple images
Option 1: Solid-color or designed space
Set a portrait canvas, add a background color, and center the original photo. This works well for presentations, posters, profile graphics, and layouts with captions. Borders and intentional framing make the extra space look designed rather than accidental.
Option 2: A blurred duplicate background
- Create a portrait canvas.
- Duplicate the landscape photo.
- Enlarge the duplicate until it fills the canvas.
- Blur or darken the duplicate.
- Place the original photo sharply on top.
This fills the vertical frame while preserving the complete original. It is a layout treatment, not a true conversion of the photograph’s composition; a platform may still process the final design according to its own rules.
Option 3: Generative expansion
AI or generative expand tools can create plausible background above, below, or beside a subject. The added areas are synthesized—not recovered from the original file.
Inspect the result for repeated objects, warped buildings, incorrect hands or facial details, invented text or logos, and inconsistent lighting. Generative expansion may be suitable for decorative social graphics, but avoid it for journalism, evidence, legal records, historically sensitive images, or products whose appearance must remain accurate.

Never unlock width and height casually
Dragging a wide photo into a tall rectangle by changing width and height independently stretches faces, circles, buildings, and people. Use a crop or a canvas change instead. Keep Keep Aspect Ratio enabled when you are scaling the image rather than changing its composition.

Protect the subject
- Leave more space in the direction a person is looking or moving.
- Avoid cutting through wrists, elbows, knees, and ankles.
- Keep faces away from the extreme top and side edges.
- For products, preserve the complete object and its shadow where possible.
- Check that text and logos near the sides remain readable.
- For architecture, check vertical lines for unintended tilting.
- For landscapes, decide whether the sky, foreground, person, building, or central object is the true subject.
Use the crop preview at a useful size
A tiny thumbnail can hide a clipped face or unreadable label. Inspect the crop at 100% when possible, then open the exported file before uploading it elsewhere.

Common problems and recovery steps
The result is sideways
The original needed rotation, not cropping. Rotate it 90 degrees, confirm that the subject is upright, and then crop if the resulting frame still needs a different ratio.
The result has blank bars
You changed the canvas or export dimensions while preserving the landscape image. That is expected. Keep the bars if they are part of the design, fill them with a color or blurred duplicate, or crop the image if losing side content is acceptable.
The subject is cut off
Undo the crop or reopen the original, choose a less aggressive ratio such as 4:5 instead of 9:16, and reposition the crop. If everyone or everything must remain visible, use a portrait canvas.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The image looks stretched
Undo the export and return to the original. Restore proportional scaling, then use crop or canvas controls rather than independently editing width and height.
The image looks soft after cropping
Cropping reduces the available pixels. A severe crop may leave too little resolution for a large print or high-resolution display. Start with the highest-resolution original, avoid repeated JPG re-saves, and export once after the composition is final.
JPG or PNG?
Use JPG for most ordinary photographs; it is generally smaller and widely supported. Use PNG when transparency, sharp graphic elements, or lossless handling matters. Neither format can restore detail removed by a crop. Your editor and destination may also apply their own compression.
Save the new version with the ratio in its filename—for example, photo-portrait-4x5.jpg—and do not overwrite the source file.

Privacy before uploading
A browser editor requires you to upload the image to a third-party service. Take extra care with identification documents, children’s photos, private medical or legal images, unpublished commercial photography, and pictures containing addresses or license plates. Review the service’s current privacy policy if the image is sensitive. Do not assume that a free editor has the same storage or deletion practices as another service.
Which method should you choose?
- Choose Crop when the subject is upright and you want a genuine portrait-shaped photograph.
- Choose a portrait canvas when every part of the wide image must remain visible.
- Choose a blurred background when you want a full-frame vertical design without inventing content.
- Choose generative expansion only when synthetic background is acceptable and you have checked the result carefully.
- Choose Rotate when the image is sideways.
- Never choose Flip unless you intentionally want a mirror image.
For a one-off crop, start with a simple free browser workflow. Choose Canva when you need templates, text, branding, or repeated social layouts; Adobe Express when you already work in Adobe’s ecosystem and want quick actions; Fotor for clearly documented manual crop controls; and Pixlr when precise canvas and layer control matters. A paid subscription is not inherently required to convert one landscape image to portrait.
