Runway’s bookending feature was real, but it is no longer a current Gen-3 launch. Runway added last-frame conditioning to Gen-3 Alpha on August 5, 2024. Gen-3 Alpha Turbo went further, allowing creators to provide first, middle, and last keyframes. According to Runway’s current documentation, Gen-3 Alpha and Gen-3 Alpha Turbo were scheduled to leave the product after July 8 and July 30, 2026, respectively.
For creators evaluating Runway now, the important question is not whether Gen-3 can still “bookend” a video. It is what the feature did, what its limitations were, and whether Runway’s current replacement tools fit the same job.

What “bookending” an AI video means
Bookending means giving a video model visual constraints for the start, the end, or both ends of a generated clip.
- First frame: An uploaded image establishes the intended opening state.
- Last frame: An uploaded image establishes the intended ending state.
- First and last frames: The model generates a transition between two supplied visual states.
- Three keyframes: Gen-3 Alpha Turbo could use first, middle, and last images.
This was not conventional interpolation or a simple crossfade. Runway generated motion between the visual conditions, which meant it could reinterpret anatomy, objects, lighting, camera movement, and composition along the way. A supplied last frame was a target condition—not a guarantee of a clean, exact, frame-accurate endpoint.

Runway introduced Gen-3 Alpha in 2024, with image-to-video support using an image as the first frame. Its changelog records last-frame support on August 5, 2024. See the Runway changelog and Gen-3 Alpha announcement.
Gen-3 Alpha versus Gen-3 Alpha Turbo
Coverage that says “Gen-3 can bookend videos” often misses the distinction between the two models.
| Capability | Gen-3 Alpha | Gen-3 Alpha Turbo |
|---|---|---|
| First-frame image | Yes | Yes |
| Last-frame image | Yes | Yes |
| First plus last frames | No, according to Runway’s documentation | Yes |
| Middle keyframe | No | Yes |
| Duration | 5 or 10 seconds | 5 or 10 seconds |
| Documented credit cost | 10 credits per second | 5 credits per second |
| Documented output | 1280×768 | 1280×768, plus 768×1280 |
| Maximum input image | 64 MB | 64 MB |
| Frame rate | 24 fps | 24 fps |
The details above come from Runway’s Gen-3 keyframe documentation. The original Alpha supported one keyframe used as either the first or last frame. The stronger “start-to-finish” workflow belonged to Alpha Turbo.
How the original workflow worked
When the Gen-3 workflow was available, creators could use these steps:
- Open Runway’s Generate Video area.
- Select Gen-3 Alpha or Gen-3 Alpha Turbo from the model switcher.
- Upload one or more keyframe images.
- With Gen-3 Alpha, designate the image as the first or last frame.
- With Gen-3 Alpha Turbo, optionally provide first, middle, and last images.
- Write a prompt describing the desired motion and transition.
- Select a 5-second or 10-second duration.
- Click Generate, then inspect the result in the session or Assets area.
Those menu labels may no longer appear. Runway’s documentation now treats Gen-3 as a legacy workflow and points users toward newer tools, so this is best understood as the historical operating procedure rather than a promise of current access.
How to prepare better keyframes
The relationship between the still images mattered as much as the prompt. For more reliable transitions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Use compatible aspect ratios, framing, and subject scale.
- Keep identity, wardrobe, lighting, and environment consistent when continuity matters.
- Describe the motion—such as a slow push-in, camera orbit, or controlled transformation—rather than repeating every visible detail already present in the images.
- Use five seconds for a simple transition between closely matched states.
- Use 10 seconds when the model needs more time to bridge a substantial change.
- Avoid asking for motion that conflicts with the supplied frames.
Runway specifically warned that large differences between the first and last frames could create abrupt transitions in a five-second clip. More time can help, but it does not make radically different scenes physically coherent.

Good uses for bookended generation
Keyframe-driven generation was most useful when the creator already knew the visual states that mattered:
- Opening and closing shots for short films.
- Product, fashion, or environment transformations.
- Before-and-after visual reveals.
- Transitions between storyboard or concept-art frames.
- Character and creature metamorphoses.
- Music-video inserts and title animations.
- Controlled camera movement between two compositions.
- Loop concepts using related opening and closing frames.
The benefit was increased control, not guaranteed continuity. Keyframes constrained the destination states while leaving the model to invent the motion between them.
Common failure modes
The ending flashes instead of settling
The model may approach the target only near the final moment, show it briefly, or fail to hold it cleanly. Check the final frames rather than assuming the uploaded image was reproduced exactly. Trimming, retiming, compositing, or replacing the endpoint may be necessary.

Keyframes do not guarantee identity preservation. Small details can change during the transition, making the technique unsuitable as the sole method when a product label, face, logo, or character design must remain exact.
The camera takes an unexpected path
Instead of the requested move, the model may create a zoom, pan, morph, or cut-like effect. More specific motion language can help, but the result is still generative rather than deterministic.
The composition jumps
Different subject scales, camera angles, or framing between the supplied images can produce abrupt spatial changes. Matching the composition before generation generally gives the model a more manageable problem.
The prompt fights the images
If the text asks for movement or a scene change that conflicts with the keyframes, adherence can weaken. Treat the images as the primary visual conditions and use the prompt to explain how they should connect.

The transition becomes a surreal morph
Two completely different scenes may not read as a meaningful journey from one state to another. The model may morph objects, backgrounds, and anatomy instead of creating a plausible camera move or transformation.
Iterations consume credits
At the documented rates, a 10-second Gen-3 Alpha generation cost 100 credits, while the same Turbo generation cost 50 credits. Multiple attempts could therefore become expensive, especially when the desired result required endpoint cleanup.
The output is not a finishing master
The documented Gen-3 keyframe output was 720p-class rather than native 4K. Professional work may require upscaling, compositing, color correction, masking, or replacement frames in a conventional editor.
Keyframes are not the same as video extension
These workflows solve different problems:
- Keyframes: Generate a new clip from supplied still-image states.
- Video extension: Continue an existing generated clip beyond its endpoint.
- Video-to-video: Transform an existing video while retaining some of its motion or structure.
- Canvas expansion and editing: Modify the visual area or edit footage rather than generate a transition between two stills.
Runway separates these capabilities in its Gen-3 documentation. A keyframe workflow should not be treated as a native editing timeline or a frame-accurate animation system.

Runway’s current help documentation identifies Gen-4.5 as the replacement direction for Gen-3 text-to-video and image-to-video generation, and Animate Frames as the replacement direction for Gen-3 keyframe workflows. It identifies Edit Studio Aleph 2.0 for Gen-3 video-to-video workflows.
That does not establish that Animate Frames is feature-identical to Gen-3 Alpha Turbo’s first-middle-last keyframe system. The replacement label confirms the product direction, not identical controls, behavior, pricing, or endpoint performance.
Runway’s documentation says Gen-3 Alpha was scheduled to become unavailable after July 8, 2026, and Gen-3 Alpha Turbo after July 30, 2026. As of August 18, 2026, creators should therefore evaluate the current Runway workflow rather than subscribe specifically for legacy Gen-3 access.

Should you pay for Runway for this use case?
Runway’s current pricing page lists a free plan with 125 one-time credits and a Standard plan at $15 per month, or $12 per month when billed annually. The page emphasizes newer models and tools, including Gen-4.5, Gen-4 Turbo, and Veo 3.1, rather than Gen-3.

Runway is a reasonable option if you want a hosted creative workspace with multiple AI-video models, image-to-video generation, editing, audio, and related tools in one interface. The free tier can also make sense for testing the current product before subscribing.
It is a poor fit if your main reason to pay is obtaining Gen-3 Alpha, or if you need unlimited high-volume generation, exact frame-level endpoint control, native high-resolution finishing, or reliable preservation of faces, labels, logos, and character details.
Runway also offers a separate developer API with usage-based billing. Its billing documentation lists Gen-3 Alpha Turbo at 5 credits per second and gives example costs of $0.25 for five seconds and $0.50 for 10 seconds under that model-pricing framework. API billing should not be confused with Creative-plan subscription credits; check the official API billing documentation for the applicable route.
Alternatives inside the current Runway ecosystem
Runway’s model catalog lists other model families, including Google Veo 3.1 and Kling 2.6 Pro, with start/end-frame or related capabilities. These should be treated as models exposed through Runway’s current ecosystem, subject to plan, availability, and feature limits—not as proof that their native tools or pricing are identical.
For professional delivery, conventional editing and compositing remain important. Generate individual shots or transition elements, then use an editor for exact timing, cuts, dissolves, audio synchronization, typography, color, masking, cleanup, and frame replacement. AI generation and traditional post-production are complementary, not competing choices.
The practical verdict
Runway’s Gen-3 bookending feature was an important step toward controllable AI video. But the precise version matters: Gen-3 Alpha accepted either a first or last image, while Gen-3 Alpha Turbo supported first, middle, and last keyframes. Neither workflow guaranteed exact endpoint matching or production-ready continuity.
Because Runway’s documentation places both Gen-3 variants in the retired legacy category, the feature should now be understood historically. If you are choosing Runway today, compare its current plans and replacement tools for your actual needs. Do not subscribe expecting access to Gen-3 Alpha simply because an older headline says it can bookend your videos.
