Microsoft Paint can add formatted text to an image, change its color, and rotate the finished text selection. The reliable workflow is to create and format the text first, finish the text box, select the resulting area, and then use Rotate. Keep in mind that ordinary Paint may turn committed text into pixels, so it is no longer a fully editable text object after you click away.
The exact toolbar can look different in Windows 10, Windows 11, and different Paint app builds, but the controls are usually named Text, Select, and Rotate.
Open Microsoft Paint
To open Paint in Windows:
- Press the Windows key and type Paint.
- Select the Paint app from the search results.
You can also right-click an image in File Explorer, choose Open with, and select Paint. To start with a blank canvas, open Paint and use File > New. To edit an existing picture, choose File > Open.
These instructions apply to Microsoft Paint, not Paint 3D. The two apps have different text and object controls.

Add text in Paint
- Open the image or create a blank canvas.
- Choose the Text tool, usually shown with a T icon.
- Click and drag on the canvas to draw a text box. Make it wider and taller than you think you need so the words do not wrap unexpectedly.
- Type your text.
- Use the text toolbar to choose the font family, font size, bold or italic formatting, alignment where available, and text color.
Microsoft’s current Paint overview describes this same basic process: select Text, click the canvas, type, and choose the font, size, and color from the toolbar. See Microsoft’s Paint feature overview for the current product description.
Keep the text box active while you work. If you click another tool or elsewhere on the canvas, Paint may commit the text to the image. At that point it is generally ordinary bitmap content rather than an editable text layer.
Change the text color
While the text box is active
- Click inside the text box.
- Highlight the characters whose color you want to change. For one color across the whole box, select all of the text in the box.
- Choose a color from the Paint palette or the text-formatting controls.
- Check the result before clicking outside the text box.
For a single-color caption, you can often select the desired color before typing or while all of the text is selected. Choose a color with enough contrast against the image to keep the words readable.
If the text has already been committed
Paint cannot reliably identify committed lettering as text. You normally cannot reopen it to change its font or recolor individual characters. Your practical choices are:

- Press Ctrl+Z immediately and recolor the text while the box is active.
- Cover or erase the old lettering and create a new text box.
- Use a layer-aware editor if you need to revise text repeatedly.
Older Paint tutorials may refer to Color 1 and Color 2. In classic Paint, Color 1 generally represents the primary drawing or text color, while Color 2 may affect a secondary color or background depending on the tool. Newer Windows 11 Paint versions may show a palette and text controls differently, so do not treat the Color 1/Color 2 method as the only current interface. A Microsoft Q&A response likewise describes selecting the text and choosing a palette color, but the exact controls vary by version.
Rotate text in Paint
Paint usually rotates the selection containing the text, not an independently editable text object. Use this workflow:
- Finish typing and formatting the text.
- Click Select.
- Draw a selection around the complete text area. Include any background rectangle that should move or rotate with the words, but avoid selecting unnecessary parts of the image.
- Open Rotate in the selection or toolbar controls.
- Choose a preset such as Rotate right 90°, Rotate left 90°, or Rotate 180°. Some interfaces also provide horizontal and vertical flip commands.
- Drag inside the selected area to position the rotated text.
- Click outside the selection only when the placement is correct.
Microsoft describes Paint’s selection tools as a way to manipulate specific image areas, and current Paint release notes document selection movement, resizing, and rotation. The controls and layout can change between releases; if you do not see Rotate immediately, look in the selection toolbar or its secondary menu. See the Paint release notes for ongoing app changes.

Can Paint rotate text to any angle?
Do not assume that every Paint installation supports arbitrary-angle text rotation. Classic Paint and many standard builds provide preset rotations such as 90, 180, and 270 degrees. A freeform rotation control may be available in some newer Windows 11 preview or rollout builds, but its availability depends on the Paint app version, Windows build, and release channel.
Check for a free-rotation handle or custom rotation control after selecting the text. If it is not present, Paint alone may not offer a practical way to rotate text to an angle such as 15, 30, or 45 degrees. Use an editor with a rotatable text layer, or create the text in another text-capable application and bring the finished graphic into Paint.
A report about freeform rotation in Paint describes it as a preview or rollout-dependent feature, not a universal control. Microsoft’s Insider release notes are the better place to check changes to selection rotation. Do not confuse Paint with Word or PowerPoint: instructions such as Shape Format > Rotate > More Rotation Options belong to Office applications, as explained in Microsoft’s Office documentation, not ordinary Paint.

- Keep the selection active after rotation.
- Drag inside the selected area to move it.
- Use the arrow keys for small adjustments if your Paint version supports keyboard nudging.

Be careful near the canvas edge. If part of a selection moves beyond the canvas and you then deselect it, the portion outside the canvas can be permanently cropped.

Keep the background under the text
Depending on the Paint version, the text tool may offer a transparent or opaque text-box background:
- Choose a transparent background when the original image should show through behind the letters.
- Choose an opaque background when the text needs a solid rectangle for contrast.
If the text is already rasterized, changing its background may require erasing or repainting the area and creating the text again.
Some newer Windows 11 Paint builds include layers and transparency, which can make separate text elements easier to manage. These are newer, version-dependent capabilities rather than features that should be assumed on every Windows installation. Microsoft describes the layers and transparency update in its Windows Insider announcement.
Fix common Paint text problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Text color will not change | The characters are not highlighted, or the text box has already been committed. | Click inside the box, select the characters, and choose the color again. If the text is committed, use Ctrl+Z or recreate it. |
| Rotate is unavailable | The text is still in edit mode, or no image selection has been made. | Choose Select, draw around the text area, and then look for Rotate. |
| The background rotates with the text | The selection includes surrounding pixels or the text box has an opaque background. | Undo, make a tighter selection, or recreate the text with a transparent background. |
| The text looks blurry or jagged | Rasterized text has been rotated or resized repeatedly. | Rotate it once, start with larger text, and save text-heavy graphics as PNG. |
| The text cannot be edited | Paint has committed it as part of the bitmap. | Undo back to the active text box, cover the old text and recreate it, or use a text-layer editor. |
Undo mistakes immediately
Press Ctrl+Z after an unwanted color change, move, rotation, or deselection. If the text is still active, click inside the box and correct the selection or formatting. If undo history no longer reaches the editable text box, cover the old lettering with a matching background or rebuild that part of the image.

Save a copy before experimenting with rotation. This gives you an original image to return to if the selection includes too much background.
Save the finished image
Use File > Save as when you want to preserve the original and create a separate finished copy. Microsoft Paint supports common formats including PNG, JPEG, BMP, and GIF, as described on its product page.
- PNG: Best for screenshots, labels, posters, simple graphics, and text because it preserves image detail without lossy compression.
- JPEG: Useful for photographs when a smaller file matters, but repeated saves can soften text and introduce compression artifacts.
- BMP or GIF: Choose these when a particular compatibility requirement calls for them.
When Paint is the wrong tool
Paint is a quick choice for a caption, annotation, meme, or simple label. Use another editor when you need editable text layers, arbitrary-angle rotation, curved text, precise spacing, multiple independent text objects, complex wrapping, or frequent revisions. The important distinction is editability: Paint is convenient for finishing a bitmap, but it is not a dependable replacement for a full typography or layer-based workflow.
