Microsoft Paint has a small command-line interface. Use mspaint to launch Paint, pass a quoted image path to open a file, or use the documented /p switch to print through the default printer. Paint does not provide a current, comprehensive command-line interface for resizing, format conversion, silent editing, or batch processing.

Open an image directly
Pass the image path after the command:

Print an image with /p
Microsoft’s current Power Automate documentation demonstrates:
mspaint /p "C:PathToImage.png"This launches Paint and sends the image through the default printer. It is the strongest currently documented Paint command-line printing option.

/p does not expose documented command-line controls for paper size, scaling, orientation, margins, or printer settings. Depending on the Windows release and Paint package, normal printing behavior or user-interface interaction may still occur. It should not be treated as a fully unattended printing API.

/pt is commonly reported in Microsoft Q&A and older Windows guidance as a print-to-printer switch:
mspaint /pt "Printer Name" "C:Imagesphoto.png"However, Microsoft’s current Learn example explicitly documents /p, not a complete modern /pt reference. Treat /pt as legacy and version-dependent. Test it on the exact Windows version and Paint installation you intend to automate. If selecting a printer and controlling print settings is important, use a dedicated printing utility, Windows print API, printer-vendor tool, or an automation platform instead.
Does Paint support /save, /resize, or conversion?
There is no current authoritative Microsoft command-line reference establishing switches for these operations:

Commands such as these should not be presented as native Paint options unless verified for a particular executable build:

mspaint /save output.jpgA Microsoft Q&A discussion about bulk image conversion likewise does not establish a native Paint command-line solution. External scripts can automate GUI actions, but that is different from Paint providing a supported switch.
Does mspaint /? show the options?
Do not assume that Paint has a help interface like robocopy /? or wt --help. No current Microsoft-published Paint command-line help table establishes /? or /help as a supported reference. A token being accepted or ignored by a packaged application is not proof that it is supported.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 differences
Older Windows releases used a more system-integrated version of Paint. Current Windows installations may use a modern packaged Paint app whose files, registration, and update behavior differ by release and package version.

- Prefer
mspaintormspaint.exeover a hard-coded WindowsApps path. - Do not assume that an old classic Paint executable behaves exactly like the current app.
- Do not copy
mspaint.exefrom another Windows installation as a repair method; Microsoft Q&A reports that this is not a reliable Windows 11 fix. - Do not assume that multiple-file arguments behave consistently across Paint versions.
Troubleshooting
“mspaint is not recognized”
- Try
mspaint.exe. - Run
where mspaintto check whether Windows can locate it. - Try
mspaint.exefrom the Run dialog. - If Paint is missing or damaged, repair or reinstall it through Windows’ installed-app controls or supported organizational deployment tools.
Microsoft Q&A also shows this DISM capability command for some Windows configurations:
DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Microsoft.Windows.MSPaint~~~~0.0.1.0Use it only after confirming that it applies to your Windows edition and deployment policy. Administrator rights, internet access, component sources, and organizational restrictions may affect the result.
The image does not open
Check that the file exists and that the path is quoted:

Paint remains open after printing
Paint is a graphical application. Starting it successfully does not prove that printing has completed, and the command does not provide a reliable completion signal.
Microsoft’s automation example uses:
taskkill /IM "mspaint.exe"A delayed version is:
timeout /t 3 /nobreak >nul
taskkill /IM mspaint.exe /TUse this only in controlled automation. It can terminate every matching Paint process and discard unsaved work. It also does not guarantee that the printer has finished processing the job.
Multiple images
Do not rely on this syntax for predictable behavior:

What to use instead for automation
Use Paint when a person needs to open one image interactively or when the default-printer behavior of /p is sufficient. Choose another tool when the workflow must be repeatable, unattended, or scalable.
- Bulk conversion or resizing: use a dedicated command-line imaging tool, PowerShell image library, script, or imaging API.
- Deterministic printing: use Windows print APIs, a printer-vendor utility, a dedicated image-printing utility, or an automation platform.
- Hundreds or thousands of files: use a tool with documented noninteractive operations and meaningful error handling.
- Completion tracking: use a workflow that can report whether the image was saved or the print job was submitted; Paint’s process launch alone cannot provide that confirmation.
Microsoft’s own image-printing guidance also describes an alternative rundll32-based approach, which may be more suitable than relying on Paint when the workflow does not require Paint’s interface.
Bottom line
Paint’s useful command-line surface is small: launch it with mspaint, open an image by passing a quoted path, and print through the default printer with /p. Treat /pt as an unverified legacy option, and do not assume that /save, /resize, conversion, or batch-processing switches exist. For dependable unattended image work, use a dedicated imaging or printing tool.
