Verdict: The Bambu Lab P1S Combo remains one of the easiest ways to get fast, enclosed FDM printing with automatic filament handling. It is a strong choice for beginners, frequent hobbyists, and anyone printing multiple colors or materials. But the Combo is not one fixed product in 2026: listings may pair the P1S with the original AMS or the newer AMS 2 Pro, and prices vary substantially by configuration and promotion. Check the exact US bundle before buying.

Choose the P1S Combo when automatic loading and switching will save you regular hands-on work. Choose the printer alone if most of your jobs use one spool. The AMS adds convenience, not clean or economical multicolor printing: filament changes create purge waste and extend print times.

What the P1S Combo is

The P1S is an enclosed FDM/FFF printer with a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume, direct-drive extruder, automatic bed leveling, vibration compensation, filament runout detection, auxiliary cooling, chamber-management features, and an activated-carbon filter. It includes a 0.4 mm stainless-steel nozzle; 0.2, 0.6, and 0.8 mm options are available. Maximum hot-end temperature is 300°C and maximum bed temperature is 100°C.

The Combo adds an Automatic Material System. The original AMS holds four 1.75 mm filament spools and automates loading, unloading, and selection. Current Bambu listings also show P1S bundles with an AMS 2 Pro. Do not assume an older review, a retailer listing, and the current Bambu bundle contain the same AMS, hub or buffer, tubing, accessories, or filament. Confirm the contents on the product page for your country and date.

The AMS is useful even if you rarely print decorative multicolor models. It can keep several spools available, switch between support and model materials, and remove much of the manual unloading and reloading routine. It is not automatically a heated dryer: enclosed storage or desiccant space is different from active filament drying.

Setup: unusually approachable, but not truly plug-and-play

Bambu advertises setup in roughly 15 minutes. That is a reasonable description of unpacking, assembling the printer and AMS, connecting tubing and cables, and getting the machine operational. It does not include learning the slicer, choosing the correct plate and material profiles, updating firmware, mapping AMS slots, cleaning the build plate, or understanding supports and bed adhesion.

The sensible first-run sequence is:

  1. Assemble the printer and AMS according to the official quick-start guide.
  2. Install Bambu Studio or Bambu Handy, update firmware if prompted, and select the exact printer, nozzle, build plate, and filament profiles.
  3. Load filament using Bambu’s AMS instructions.
  4. Run the initial calibration and print a simple test model before attempting a long or multicolor job.

Automatic leveling removes one of the most frustrating parts of older hobby printers, but it cannot compensate for fingerprints, a damaged plate, wet filament, or an incorrectly selected plate profile.

Print quality: strong consistency, not magic

The available hands-on evidence is favorable. WIRED rated the P1S Combo 8/10 and reported clean first layers, a nearly perfect Benchy, and consistent operation over approximately a month without manually adjusting the leveling. Those results support the P1S’s strongest claim: it usually lets a beginner reach a good result without spending the first evening tuning hardware.

That should not be confused with a guarantee that every print succeeds. Results depend on moisture, plate cleanliness, model design, cooling, supports, material profiles, and the condition of wear parts. ABS, ASA, nylon, PC, flexible filament, and abrasive composites all demand more care than ordinary PLA.

A proper independent test would check first-layer consistency, dimensional accuracy, overhangs, bridges, small lettering, tall narrow parts, functional parts, PETG stringing, long unattended jobs, and a multicolor print. The cited review provides useful real-world observations, but it is not evidence that every material or geometry will behave identically.

Speed: genuinely fast, with asterisks

Bambu lists a maximum tool-head speed of 500 mm/s and maximum acceleration of 20,000 mm/s². These are ceiling specifications, not universal print speeds. Layer height, wall count, model geometry, cooling, nozzle size, filament profile, and acceleration limits all affect the completed part.

WIRED reported sustained printing above 200 mm/s in use and a Benchy completed in under 20 minutes. Bambu lists an approximately 18-minute Benchy under its own stated conditions. Those numbers show what the platform can do, but they do not mean every practical model will finish at that rate. A slower profile that produces a usable functional part is more valuable than a nominally fast profile that damages surface quality or reliability.

Speed also makes the printer sensitive to its furniture. WIRED found that an insufficiently sturdy table could shake, with vibration contributing to light stringing on sharp corners. Put the P1S on a rigid, stable surface, leave room behind it for purge material, and do not obstruct ventilation.

The AMS: its best feature and its biggest compromise

What it does well

  • Holds four spools in the original AMS.
  • Loads and unloads filament automatically.
  • Switches between colors or materials during a project.
  • Supports multicolor and support-material workflows.
  • Reduces manual filament changes across separate jobs.

For many owners, automatic filament management is more useful than elaborate four-color objects. If you routinely alternate between PLA colors, a model filament and a support filament, or several materials in a week, the AMS can justify its premium even when most finished parts are single-color.

What it does poorly

Every transition through a single nozzle requires purging the previous material. Multicolor jobs can therefore create a purge tower, purge coils, extra purge during incompatible material changes, and substantially longer print times. WIRED found the rear purge arrangement effective but inelegant: waste falls behind the printer and warm filament may occasionally need clearing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Place a box or waste chute behind the printer, maintain rear clearance, and inspect the waste path during long jobs. Do not treat four-color printing as economical simply because the model itself is small. You can reduce purge settings in Bambu Studio, but aggressive reductions can contaminate colors or compromise transitions. The right setting depends on the materials and colors involved.

Third-party filament and AMS mapping

Third-party filament works, but it may not be as seamless as Bambu-branded material. WIRED reported confusion in the app when automatic material and color synchronization was used with non-Bambu filament. RFID identification is a convenience, not a requirement.

Before printing, select the actual material and an appropriate profile, confirm the physical spool and software slot agree, and verify the color assignment on the print-start screen. Cardboard spool edges, tangles, excessive friction, brittle filament, incorrect dimensions, debris, and wet filament can all cause loading problems.

If an AMS load fails, pause the job, identify the affected slot and PTFE path, remove a tangled spool, cut or retract filament using the on-screen procedure, inspect the inlet and tubing, reload, and confirm that filament reaches the extruder before resuming. Do not pull filament aggressively from a hot or moving mechanism.

Materials and limitations

Bambu lists PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET, ABS, and ASA as suitable materials, with PA and PC also supported. In practical terms:

  • PLA: the easiest starting point and the best match for the supplied profiles.
  • PETG: useful for tougher parts, but prone to stringing and aggressive plate adhesion.
  • TPU: possible, though flexible filament and AMS feeding require particular care.
  • ABS and ASA: the enclosure helps with drafts and temperature stability, but warping, cracking, ventilation, and material-specific safety remain concerns.
  • PA and PC: technically possible but demanding; drying and careful profiles are essential.
  • Carbon-fiber or glass-fiber blends: abrasive. The included stainless-steel nozzle is not the correct long-term out-of-box choice; install appropriate hardened components first.

The carbon filter does not eliminate all emissions or make ABS and ASA risk-free indoors. Use material-appropriate ventilation and safety practices.

Software, camera, and connectivity

Bambu Studio handles slicing, AMS assignments, printing, and remote monitoring. Bambu Handy provides a companion mobile workflow. Cloud-connected operation is the simplest route to account-based remote access; LAN-only operation is preferable for users who want to reduce cloud dependence, but some cloud features and integrations are unavailable.

Bambu’s documentation says Developer Mode works exclusively in LAN Mode and cannot be used simultaneously with Bambu Cloud. Check the current documentation before choosing a network setup: LAN-only guidance and third-party integration details.

The P1S camera is a basic 1280 × 720 monitoring camera with a low-rate timelapse mode. It is not the X1C’s Micro Lidar system and should not be marketed as advanced AI failure detection. Remote viewing is useful, but it does not replace supervision for high-risk or heat-sensitive jobs.

Maintenance: low-maintenance, not maintenance-free

The routine is manageable but real:

  • Clean the build plate with suitable detergent and avoid touching the print surface.
  • Remove purge material from the rear waste path.
  • Inspect the nozzle and hot end after failures.
  • Clean and lubricate motion components according to Bambu’s current maintenance documentation.
  • Check belts, fans, PTFE tubes, AMS feed paths, and spool movement.
  • Replace worn nozzles, cutters, wipers, build plates, or tubing when necessary.
  • Dry moisture-sensitive filament rather than assuming a printer fault.

Automatic calibration reduces adjustment work; it does not remove wear, contamination, jams, or filament-storage problems.

Common problems and practical fixes

Poor first-layer adhesion

Confirm the selected plate, clean the surface, check bed temperature and filament moisture, inspect plate wear, and add a brim when the model has little contact area. Automatic leveling cannot correct a dirty or damaged plate.

Warping or cracking

The enclosure helps but does not guarantee success with ABS, ASA, PC, or nylon. Reduce drafts, dry the filament, use an appropriate profile, improve bed preparation, and consider the model’s size and cooling.

Rear purge blockage

Leave clearance behind the printer and use a catcher. Pause safely before clearing accumulated material; never reach into moving or heated areas during an active job.

Noise and vibration

Move the printer from a flexible shelf to a rigid table. Stability improves both noise and print consistency.

Is the Combo worth paying for?

The answer depends on filament-switching frequency, not on whether multicolor printing sounds interesting.

Choose Best fit
P1S Combo You want an enclosed printer and regularly benefit from automatic loading, switching, multicolor work, or support materials.
P1S alone Most jobs use one spool and one material, and you would rather spend the difference on filament, spare plates, a dryer, or hardened components.
A1 with AMS Lite You mainly print PLA, PETG, or TPU, do not need an enclosure, and prefer a lower-cost open-frame setup. It is not a substitute for the P1S’s enclosed chamber.
Newer enclosed Bambu model The current price gap is small and you value newer sensing or quality-of-life features more than the P1S’s mature platform and possible discounts.
Open or tool-changing alternative You prioritize offline operation, repairability, generic parts, larger volume, or less purge waste over ecosystem convenience.

As of the supplied August 2026 market information, a US Bambu listing showed a P1S with AMS 2 Pro at $869, marked down from $1,148, while WIRED linked the earlier/original configuration at Best Buy for $550. Those figures are not interchangeable: they may represent different AMS hardware, retailers, promotions, and bundle contents. Verify the live listing, country, configuration, and included accessories before using price as the deciding factor.

Who should buy it?

  • Beginner seeking the easiest route: Yes, especially for PLA and PETG.
  • Single-color functional-part maker: Usually choose the P1S alone unless automatic spool handling is valuable.
  • Multicolor hobbyist: Yes, if you accept purge waste, longer jobs, and occasional mapping or loading problems.
  • ABS/ASA user: Potentially, provided you address ventilation, drying, warping, and material safety.
  • Privacy- or offline-focused user: Consider carefully; LAN-only operation exists, but it limits cloud features.
  • Budget buyer: Compare the printer-only model and A1 series rather than assuming the Combo is the best value.
  • Existing P1P/P1S owner: Upgrade mainly for enclosure-related needs, automatic filament handling, or a specific workflow; the value of replacing an already functional printer is much lower.

The P1S Combo’s appeal is not that it eliminates every 3D-printing problem. It is that it removes many tedious ones while delivering genuinely quick, consistently good enclosed printing. Its costs are ecosystem dependence, AMS complexity, purge waste, and a price that changes with the exact bundle. For frequent filament switching, those trade-offs are reasonable. For mostly single-material printing, buy the P1S alone.
