The quickest way to make the viral AI caricature is to upload a clear portrait to ChatGPT’s image-generation tool and ask it to exaggerate recognizable features while showing your job, hobby, or personality. The first image may not be perfect: better results usually come from targeted revisions that fix likeness, props, composition, and cropping one problem at a time.
The format became widely associated with ChatGPT in social-media coverage during February 2026, but it is not a single official filter. It is a prompt-driven image style that can also be created with Gemini, Adobe Firefly, or Canva. Android Authority’s coverage describes the trend and its basic workflow.
What is an AI caricature?
An AI caricature is more than a photo converted into a cartoon. It combines a recognizable portrait with deliberate exaggeration and a visual story about the person.

- Cartoonization simplifies a photo into an illustrated or animated appearance.
- Caricature exaggerates distinctive features such as hair, glasses, eyebrows, a smile, posture, clothing, or body proportions.
- AI portrait is a broader category that may be realistic, painterly, anime-inspired, or stylized without exaggerating the subject.
The popular social-media version usually includes one recognizable person, exaggerated facial features, a job or hobby-related setting, a polished illustration style, and a portrait-friendly composition. It is best thought of as a custom image-generation prompt, not a fixed app template.
What you need before starting
Prepare these things before opening an image generator:
- A clear, well-lit portrait, preferably showing one person.
- A face that is reasonably large in the frame and not hidden by sunglasses, shadows, blur, or extreme angles.
- One or two concrete personal details, such as an occupation, hobby, favorite object, location, or personality trait.
- A target format, such as a vertical Instagram post, square profile image, or full-screen Story.
- Permission if the photograph shows another person.
For the most reliable likeness, use a close-up or medium portrait facing the camera or turned only slightly. OpenAI recommends using a reference photo for accurate likenesses and obtaining permission when generating images of real people. See the OpenAI Academy guidance on image generation.
How to make an AI caricature in ChatGPT
These instructions reflect the ChatGPT image workflow available in September 2026. Labels and availability can vary between the web app, iOS, Android, free accounts, paid accounts, workspaces, and school accounts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Open ChatGPT’s image tool
On the web or in the mobile app, you can either enter an image request in a normal conversation or open Images and choose Create Image. You can also upload an existing image and describe how you want it transformed. The exact menu appearance may differ by account and device. OpenAI’s current help article documents the available image-generation and editing paths.
2. Upload your portrait
Use the attachment or photo control, select your image, and wait for the upload to finish. Start with one portrait rather than a crowded group photo or a large collection of reference images.
3. Use a complete first prompt
Copy and adapt this prompt:
Create a playful editorial caricature of me using the uploaded photo as the likeness reference. Exaggerate my most recognizable features in a flattering, humorous way while keeping me clearly identifiable. Show me as a [JOB OR HOBBY] surrounded by [2–4 RELEVANT OBJECTS OR PROPS]. Use expressive facial features, clean hand-drawn lines, bold but harmonious colors, and a polished digital illustration finish. Keep the composition focused on one person, use a simple uncluttered background, and make it suitable for a vertical social-media post. Do not add text, logos, watermarks, or extra people.
This works better than “make me a funny caricature” because it specifies the reference image, the level of exaggeration, the setting, the style, the framing, and the things to exclude.

4. Add specific personal details
Do not assume the tool knows everything about you. A phrase such as “based on everything you know about me” can only draw on information available in the conversation and any relevant personalization features enabled on the account. For a more dependable result, state the details directly.
Rank #2
For example:
Keep the same face and caricature style. Reimagine me as a busy emergency-room nurse wearing realistic scrubs and an ID badge, with a stethoscope, clipboard, and coffee cup. Make the props readable but keep the face as the main focus.
For a hobby-based version:
Keep the same likeness and composition. Reimagine me as an enthusiastic home baker, with an apron, whisk, mixing bowl, flour on the counter, and an oversized celebratory cake. Exaggerate my smile and eyebrows slightly, but keep the result flattering.
For personality:
Make me look energetic, witty, and slightly overconfident. Use expressive eyebrows, a broad smile, and an exaggerated pose while preserving my recognizable facial structure.

5. Review the first result
Check four things at full size:
- Does the face still look like the reference?
- Is the exaggeration playful rather than distorted?
- Are the job, hobby, clothing, and props correct?
- Does the composition leave enough room for the intended social-media crop?
Do not try to fix every issue in one enormous follow-up prompt. OpenAI recommends making small, targeted revisions because changing too many variables can cause the face, style, or composition to drift.
6. Make targeted revisions
Use one of these prompts at a time:
Improve likeness
Keep the current composition, but make the face more faithful to the reference photo. Preserve my hairstyle, glasses, jawline, skin tone, and smile.
Increase the caricature
Push the caricature exaggeration further, especially in the eyebrows, smile, hair, and head-to-body proportions, while keeping the result friendly rather than distorted.
Reduce exaggeration
Make the exaggeration subtler and more flattering. Keep me recognizable and avoid making the face look warped. Exaggerate only the eyebrows, smile, hair, and pose.

Create variations
Make three variations with the same likeness: one colorful newspaper caricature, one soft editorial illustration, and one exaggerated amusement-park caricature.
7. Edit a specific area when needed
ChatGPT supports direct editing and selection-based edits. Select the problem area and describe the change, but inspect the result carefully: OpenAI notes that a selected edit may extend beyond the highlighted region.
For example:
Keep the face and clothing unchanged. Replace the hands with two natural-looking hands holding one coffee mug. Remove all duplicate mugs and extra fingers.
8. Save the final image
Generated images can be opened, copied, saved, or edited from ChatGPT. Save the original result as well as the final cropped version so you can return to an earlier image if a later edit makes the likeness worse.
Copy-and-paste prompt formula
A dependable prompt follows this sequence:
- Action: Create, transform, redraw, or edit.
- Reference: Use the uploaded photo for likeness.
- Subject: Identify the person or character being shown.
- Exaggeration: Name the features to emphasize.
- Context: Add the job, hobby, personality, or setting.
- Style: Choose editorial, ink, watercolor, newspaper, 3D, or another description.
- Composition: Specify close-up, waist-up, full body, square, or vertical.
- Constraints: Preserve likeness and exclude text, logos, watermarks, or extra people.
A weak prompt says:
Make me a funny caricature.
A stronger version says:
Turn the uploaded portrait into a friendly editorial caricature. Preserve my hairstyle, glasses, face shape, and smile, but exaggerate my eyebrows and expressive grin. Show me as a software developer at a desk with a laptop, sticky notes, and a coffee mug. Use clean ink outlines, warm colors, a simple office background, and a vertical 4:5 composition. No text, logos, watermark, or extra people.
Begin with one portrait. If you add a style reference, explain what it contributes. OpenAI recommends using a small number of reference images and identifying the role of each image when multiple references are necessary.
How to make an AI caricature with Gemini, Firefly, or Canva
Google Gemini
Gemini can generate and edit images from prompts and may use reference imagery. Google recommends starting with a direct verb such as “draw,” “generate,” or “create,” followed by the subject, visual style, action, and setting. Try:
Generate a flattering caricature from this portrait. Preserve the person’s recognizable facial features, exaggerate the smile and hair slightly, and show them as a [JOB/HOBBY] with [PROPS]. Use a clean, colorful cartoon illustration style, one person only, portrait composition, no text or logos.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Gemini is a practical choice if you already use Google services or have relevant photos in Google Photos, where those features are available and authorized. Availability varies by country, language, account type, and rollout. Review Google’s Gemini image-generation guidance before uploading or publishing images.
Adobe Firefly
Firefly supports reference-image-based cartoon creation and style directions such as comic-book, anime-inspired, illustrated, or painted looks. It is a better fit for people already working in Adobe’s ecosystem or who want a broader creative workflow after generation. See Adobe’s cartoon generator documentation.
Firefly is not simply a one-click photo filter: the workflow uses a reference image and a written description to guide the result.
Canva
Canva’s Cartoonify tool can turn portraits, pets, family photos, and other images into cartoon-style visuals, then place the result in an Instagram post, Story, thumbnail, invitation, or presentation. Canva is especially useful when accurate text, templates, cropping, and layout matter more than conversational personalization.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why your AI caricature looks wrong
The face does not resemble you
Use a clearer portrait and try:
Preserve the person’s exact hairstyle, glasses, face shape, skin tone, and smile from the reference. Make the caricature style affect the proportions and expression, not the person’s identity.
Also try a close-up first, then request a wider scene. Changing the style, setting, pose, and clothing all at once makes likeness drift more likely.
The image looks too realistic
Make the result visibly hand-drawn and caricatured, with clean ink contours, simplified shading, expressive proportions, and playful exaggeration. Do not make it photorealistic.
The image is too distorted
Reduce the exaggeration by half. Keep the face flattering, symmetrical, and clearly recognizable. Exaggerate only the eyebrows, smile, hair, and pose.
The tool invents the job or hobby
State the occupation directly instead of relying on vague personalization:
Show me as a high-school science teacher in a classroom with a lab coat, safety goggles, beakers, and a whiteboard.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

If you want the tool to infer your interests, treat the result as an experiment. It may produce generic or incorrect assumptions.
The generated text is wrong
For names, captions, labels, and hashtags, the safest workflow is to generate the illustration without text and add accurate wording later in Canva, Adobe Express, or another editor. If text must be generated, keep it short, specify its placement, and inspect every letter. OpenAI’s image-generation guidance also recommends short text and careful spelling.
Hands and props look strange
Simplify the scene and use a targeted edit. Asking for fewer objects is often more effective than adding more instructions. Important props should be large and distinct rather than buried in a crowded background.
The likeness deteriorates after repeated edits
Start a new conversation with the original photo, the best generated version, and a short list of what must remain unchanged. Explain the role of each image instead of uploading many references at once.
The tool refuses the request
Possible reasons include a public figure, sexual or violent content, deceptive or defamatory use, a living artist’s exact style, or an image involving another person without permission. Use a general visual description such as “vintage newspaper caricature with bold ink lines and limited colors” instead of requesting an exact living artist’s style or a protected character imitation.
Privacy, likeness, copyright, and publishing cautions
- Do not upload sensitive identity documents, private medical images, confidential work material, or photographs containing people who have not consented.
- Obtain permission before transforming another person’s likeness, particularly for public posting or commercial use.
- Do not create a caricature that falsely implies someone committed misconduct, endorses a product, or holds a job they do not have.
- An AI-generated image is not automatically free of copyright, publicity-right, trademark, or privacy concerns.
- Use generic objects and clothing instead of recognizable brand logos or protected characters when possible.
- Check the image tool’s current terms and the rules of the platform where you plan to publish.
Google specifically advises users to consider its terms, prohibited-use policy, and other people’s copyright and privacy rights when generating or using Gemini images.
How to prepare the caricature for social media
- Save the original: Keep the highest-quality generated file before cropping or adding text.
- Choose the format: Use a vertical composition for most portrait posts and Stories, or request a square image if that is your intended destination.
- Protect the subject: Keep the face and important props inside the safe area so platform cropping does not cut them off.
- Add text afterward: Names, captions, labels, and hashtags are usually more accurate when added in a design editor.
- Inspect at full size: Check eyes, teeth, hands, glasses, props, accidental logos, watermarks, and background people.
- Disclose when appropriate: Label the image as AI-generated when context, platform rules, or audience expectations make that appropriate.
Do you need to pay?
For a one-off experiment, start with a free tier. ChatGPT image generation is available across ChatGPT tiers subject to limits, according to the OpenAI Help Center. As of the United States pricing information seen in August 2026, OpenAI listed Free at $0 per month with limited image generation and Plus at $20 per month; prices, limits, and regional availability can change. Check the current ChatGPT pricing page before subscribing.
Upgrade only if you use image generation repeatedly or regularly run into limits. Gemini may make more sense if Google Photos and Google-account integration are central to your workflow. Canva is the better choice when the main task is turning an image into a finished, text-heavy social design. Firefly is most compelling for people already using Adobe tools. None of these options should be described as guaranteed to produce a more accurate likeness without controlled testing.
