No—not generally. As of August 18, 2026, Midjourney does not offer a normal free plan or free trial on its main website or Discord service. The limited exception is a separate Niji Journey mobile-app trial on iOS and Android. If you want to use Midjourney itself without committing to a full year, the cheapest standard option is the Basic plan at $10 for one month.
Is Midjourney free in 2026?
Midjourney is not free for ongoing image generation through Midjourney.com or Discord. Older articles may still say that Midjourney offers a free trial, but that advice is outdated. Midjourney’s current free-trial guidance says there is no ordinary trial for the main service.
A limited trial is available through the separate Niji Journey mobile app on iOS and Android. Midjourney does not specify a universal number of free generations for that trial, so availability and limits may vary.

Subscribers may also earn limited free Fast GPU time by completing website tasks or rating images. That is a reward within the subscription system, not a permanent free way to use the main Midjourney service.

The following US-dollar prices were checked on August 18, 2026. Taxes, currency conversion, promotions and availability can vary by location.

Annual billing is paid in full upfront and represents a 20% discount compared with paying monthly. Subscriptions automatically renew unless canceled. Midjourney can change prices and features, so check the official plan comparison before subscribing.
Extra Fast GPU time costs $4 per hour. This is an add-on to a subscription, not a general pay-per-image plan.

Basic: the cheapest way to try Midjourney
Basic costs $10 monthly and includes 200 minutes of Fast GPU time. It suits occasional experimentation and personal projects. Its main limitation is that it has no image Relax mode, so you cannot continue generating unlimited slower images after using the included Fast time.

Standard: the likely value tier for regular image users
Standard includes 15 Fast GPU hours and unlimited image generation in Relax mode. It costs three times as much as Basic, but is usually the more practical choice if you create images regularly. It also includes HD video generation, although video consumes GPU time.
Pro: higher volume and private web creations
Pro adds 30 Fast GPU hours, higher concurrency, Stealth Mode, unlimited image Relax mode and Relax-mode SD video generation. It is aimed at heavier users and people whose Midjourney website creations should not be publicly visible.
Mega: the highest-capacity plan
Mega includes 60 Fast GPU hours and the same broad privacy and Relax-mode advantages as Pro, with greater capacity for high-volume image and video work.

How many images can Midjourney plans make?
There is no guaranteed image count. Midjourney measures usage primarily in GPU-processing time, and the cost varies with the model, resolution, aspect ratio, batch size, upscaling, variations, references and whether you use Fast, Relax or Turbo mode.
Midjourney estimates that a standard-definition prompt producing a four-image set uses about 0.8 minutes of GPU time, while an HD image prompt uses about 1.3 minutes. Those figures are estimates, not fixed quotas. A Basic subscription’s 200 Fast minutes might therefore support roughly 200 ordinary one-minute-equivalent prompts, but your actual total can be higher or lower.

Other official estimates include less than one minute for a variation, about two minutes for a creative or subtle upscale, about eight minutes for an SD video batch of four and about 26 minutes for an HD video batch of four. Video can consume Fast time much more quickly than ordinary image generation.
Fast mode uses your included GPU time and is quicker. Relax mode, available for images on Standard, Pro and Mega, places requests in a queue. It is unlimited for images on those plans, but it is not instant: depending on demand and your recent usage, a request can take anywhere from no noticeable delay to roughly 30 minutes.
Is Midjourney worth paying for?
Paying makes sense when you specifically want Midjourney’s models, workflow or visual style and expect to create more than a small number of images. For occasional use, Basic lets you test the service for one month without the larger upfront commitment of an annual plan.
Standard is more compelling for frequent image creation because unlimited image Relax mode can be more useful than simply receiving a larger Fast allowance. However, Relax is slower and does not mean unlimited fast generation.
Choose Pro or Mega when privacy, high concurrency or substantial image-and-video production matters. If you need only occasional images, a free alternative may be sufficient and avoids a subscription entirely.

Best free alternatives to Midjourney
Free alternatives are not identical replacements: they can differ in style, quotas, privacy, model access, editing tools and commercial terms.
Ideogram: a strong first test for free text-heavy graphics
Ideogram’s $0 plan provides free credits and lists 10 slow credits per week. Its free generation is limited and public. It is particularly worth testing for posters, logos, headings and social graphics that contain readable text, though results will depend on the specific prompt and use case. Ideogram’s Plus plan is listed at $15 per month when billed annually.
Adobe Firefly: best for Adobe-centered workflows
Adobe Firefly Free includes limited daily generations and access to selected image, video and audio models. Firefly Standard is listed at $9.99 per month with 2,000 monthly generative credits. It is a sensible choice for designers, marketers and existing Adobe users who value integrated editing and design tools.
Firefly Free is not unlimited, and neither Ideogram nor Firefly should be assumed to have the same output, privacy or licensing conditions as Midjourney. Review each provider’s current terms before using generated material commercially.

Midjourney creations are generally open by default and may appear on the public Explore page. Stealth Mode is available only with Pro and Mega. It can hide creations from other users on Midjourney’s website, but it does not make work posted in a shared Discord channel private.

For sensitive work, use Pro or Mega Stealth Mode and avoid shared Discord channels. Midjourney’s privacy guidance also distinguishes deleting or trashing an image from making it private; deleting an image is not a substitute for privacy controls.
If confidential client material must never leave a private workflow, check the current privacy documentation and your client agreement before uploading references or prompts.
Commercial use and legal considerations
Midjourney’s plan comparison lists General Commercial Terms for all four plans and says that a company with more than $1 million in gross annual revenue must purchase Pro or Mega. That is a plan condition, not a complete legal opinion. Read the current plan information and Midjourney’s current Terms of Service before relying on an output for business use.
Permission to use an output commercially is not the same as guaranteed copyright ownership. AI-generated work can raise separate copyright, trademark, likeness, privacy and client-contract issues, which also depend on the applicable law and the material used to create the image.

Which option should you choose?
- Want to try Midjourney itself: buy Basic for $10 for one month.
- Create images regularly: Standard is the likely value choice because it includes unlimited image Relax mode.
- Need private Midjourney work: choose Pro or Mega with Stealth Mode, and do not use shared Discord channels.
- Need zero-cost experimentation: start with Ideogram or Adobe Firefly Free.
- Need text-heavy posters or social graphics: test Ideogram first.
- Already work in Adobe tools: Firefly may fit your workflow better.
- Need high-volume Midjourney video or image generation: compare Pro and Mega by Fast GPU requirements.
Bottom line
Midjourney is not generally free in 2026. The main website and Discord service require a paid subscription, starting at $10 per month for Basic. A limited Niji Journey mobile trial exists, but it is not a normal Midjourney.com free plan. For free experimentation, try Ideogram or Firefly Free; for Midjourney itself, Basic is the least expensive way to test it, while Standard is the more useful tier for regular image generation.
