Yes—Adobe Photoshop can generate images from plain-language prompts. Its Generate Image feature creates new visuals from a blank document, while tools such as Generative Fill modify selected areas of an existing image. The feature is not new in 2026: Adobe introduced Photoshop’s text-to-image generation in beta on April 23, 2024.
Photoshop is comparable to DALL-E or Midjourney in its prompt-to-image behavior, but it is not simply another standalone AI art generator. Its main advantage is that generated content can immediately be edited, masked, composited, retouched and exported inside a professional image-editing workflow.
What Photoshop’s AI image generation actually does
Photoshop now combines two related but distinct workflows:

Photoshop also includes Generative Expand for extending a canvas, Generate Background for creating or replacing a background, Generate Similar for making variations, Generative Upscale for increasing detail and resolution, and Harmonize for helping a subject blend into a new background. Adobe lists these capabilities in its Photoshop generative-AI feature overview.
How to generate a brand-new image in Photoshop
- Create a new Photoshop document.
- Select Generate Image from the Contextual Task Bar.
- Enter a descriptive prompt.
- Choose an Adobe Firefly or available partner model in the model picker.
- Optionally add a reference image or adjust available style settings.
- Select Generate, then review the variations Photoshop creates.
- Continue editing the result using Photoshop’s layers, masks, selections and retouching tools.
These are the current desktop steps described in Adobe’s Generate Image documentation. Labels and model availability can vary by Photoshop version, plan, region and account.
Writing a useful Photoshop prompt
A good prompt usually identifies the:
- Subject: what should appear in the image
- Environment: location, background or setting
- Composition: close-up, overhead view, centered subject or negative space
- Lighting: soft window light, dramatic rim light or overcast daylight
- Visual style: editorial photograph, oil painting, product advertisement or cinematic still
- Color palette: muted earth tones, saturated primary colors or monochrome
- Layout intent: portrait, landscape, room for headline text or a square social post
For example:
A cinematic product photograph of a red ceramic coffee mug on a dark walnut table, soft window light from the left, shallow depth of field, editorial advertising style.
Prompt detail improves direction, but it does not guarantee accurate hands, faces, logos, typography, product geometry or other small details. For important text, create the artwork without lettering and add editable Photoshop type afterward.

How to edit an existing image with Generative Fill
- Open an image with File > Open.
- Use a selection tool, such as the Selection Brush, to select the area you want to change.
- Select Generative Fill in the Contextual Task Bar.
- Choose an Adobe or partner model if the model picker is available.
- Describe the replacement or addition, or leave the prompt blank to use surrounding image content.
- Select Generate.
- Choose a variation in the Properties panel.
Adobe’s Generative Fill instructions cover this workflow. It is especially useful for removing unwanted objects, adding scenery or people, replacing a background, extending a crop and adapting a photograph to a different format.
Generative Fill is not identical to a standalone text-to-image service. It is selection-based and context-aware: Photoshop uses the surrounding image as part of the problem. That makes it useful when the goal is to preserve an existing composition rather than start over with a completely new image.
Which AI models can Photoshop use?
Adobe’s Generate Image documentation, checked August 18, 2026, lists these models:
- Adobe Firefly Image 5
- Adobe Firefly Image 3
- Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2
- Gemini 3 with Nano Banana Pro
- Gemini 2.5 with Nano Banana
- FLUX.2 pro
However, model lists can become outdated quickly. Adobe separately announced that Firefly Image 3 was being removed from the Photoshop model picker beginning with Photoshop 27.6 and would be fully removed across versions and plans in August 2026. Because those sources conflict, do not assume Firefly Image 3 is available. The reliable answer is the model picker shown in your installed version.

Generative Fill has a separate documented model list that includes Firefly Image 5, Firefly Fill & Expand, Firefly Image 1, Gemini models, FLUX.2 pro and FLUX.1 Kontext Pro. A model available for Generative Fill is not necessarily available for Generate Image.
Is this Photoshop or Adobe Firefly?
It is both, but they are different entry points. Photoshop contains AI generation and editing tools inside its desktop, web and mobile ecosystem. Firefly is Adobe’s broader generative-AI application and model family, with a more generation-centered web experience.
Adobe also announced AI Assistant in Photoshop as a public beta in June 2026. That conversational feature is separate from the established Generate Image command and is intended to help orchestrate more complex tasks from a described outcome. Its interface, availability and supported workflows may change while it remains in beta.

How credits work
Generative credits are shared across supported Creative Cloud products. Most standard generative features commonly use one credit per generation, but the exact cost can vary by feature, model, output and file size. It is not safe to assume that every generated image always costs one credit.
Adobe says some Creative Cloud Pro and Firefly plans include unlimited access to standard generations, while premium features consume credits. Credits reset monthly and do not roll over. Adobe does not charge for additional credits unless the user chooses to purchase them. You can check your balance in your Adobe account or inside the product. Photoshop is comparable to DALL-E or Midjourney in the narrow sense that all can turn natural-language instructions into generated images. That does not mean they offer the same workflow, controls or output quality. A fair comparison is about use case rather than an unsupported claim that one consistently makes better images.

Photoshop is the stronger fit if you already work with Adobe files, need generated elements inside an existing photograph or design, or want precise post-generation editing. A dedicated generator may be simpler and more appropriate if you only want rapid visual exploration and do not need layered production files, pixel-level retouching or conventional compositing.
Official alternatives include Midjourney, ChatGPT and the Adobe Firefly web app. Their pricing and terms should be checked directly because they change independently of Photoshop.
Limitations and common problems
- The composition is wrong: Add camera angle, subject placement, lighting and background details to the prompt.
- The generated subject does not match an existing photo: Use a selection, reference image or a model better suited to the task instead of endlessly rewriting the prompt.
- Edges look pasted in: Refine the selection, generate with more surrounding context, then manually mask, shade and color-correct.
- Text is garbled: Generate the visual without text and add editable type in Photoshop.
- Generate Image is unavailable: Check that you are signed in, have an eligible plan or available credits, and are testing in a new document.
- Generative Fill is unavailable: Open an image and create an active selection first.
- A model is missing: Check the installed Photoshop version and current model picker. Availability can vary by plan, region, feature and model retirement.
- Credits disappear faster than expected: Check whether the selected model or feature is premium and review the generation cost shown by Adobe.
If a feature still does not appear, update Photoshop through the Creative Cloud desktop app, restart Photoshop after the update and verify your Adobe account. Beta tools such as AI Assistant should be treated as changeable experiments rather than stable replacements for established commands.
Commercial use and rights
Adobe says its Firefly image models were trained on licensed content, including Adobe Stock, and public-domain content where copyright has expired. Adobe also positions eligible Firefly outputs for commercial use. Those statements describe Adobe’s approach and product terms; they are not universal legal guarantees.
Commercial-use permission, copyright protection, licensing and indemnification are different concepts. Partner models may have different training-data positions, terms or restrictions. Before publishing client or commercial work, review the current Adobe and model-provider terms, and inspect the output for unintended resemblance, trademark-like elements, inaccurate text and other risks.
So, can Photoshop replace DALL-E or Midjourney?
Not for everyone. Photoshop is best understood as an AI-assisted image editor that now includes a genuine text-to-image generator. It is a compelling choice for designers, photographers and marketers who want generation and professional editing in one application. It is less attractive for someone who only wants quick AI artwork and has no use for Photoshop’s broader toolset.
