There is no single best photo editor for every PC user in India. Choose Adobe Photoshop for advanced retouching, compositing and thumbnails; Lightroom Classic for RAW photography and large libraries; GIMP for the best free general-purpose editing; and Photoshop Elements 2026 for guided beginner-friendly tools.
The most important decision is whether you need a pixel editor for layers, selections, text and compositing, or a RAW developer for exposure, colour, lens correction, cataloguing and batch processing. Professional photographers often need both types.

Adobe’s India product page currently highlights Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Remove Tool improvements and other AI-assisted features. These tools can speed up certain jobs, but some AI services may require an internet connection or have usage limits.
Price signal in India: the page displayed ₹599 per month including GST for the first year, billed annually each month, with a regular displayed price of ₹733.96 per month afterwards. This was a promotional offer for new subscribers when checked, not a permanent price.
Choose it if: clients require PSD files, you combine photography with graphic design, or you need precise retouching and compositing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Avoid it if: you only crop, resize and correct occasional photos. Its subscription and learning curve are difficult to justify for simple jobs.
2. Adobe Lightroom Classic and Lightroom: best for photographers
Lightroom Classic is the better fit for photographers working with RAW files, weddings, events, travel, wildlife and large local libraries. It combines non-destructive editing, cataloguing, metadata, presets and batch adjustments. Lightroom, the cloud-oriented product, is designed for synchronised desktop, web and mobile workflows; Lightroom Classic is primarily desktop and catalogue based.
Adobe positions Lightroom around editing, organising and processing photographs, while Photoshop focuses on manipulation and creation. That distinction matters: Lightroom is not a replacement for Photoshop-style composites, extensive typography or complex layered artwork.
Current Adobe-listed Lightroom features include Generative Remove, Lens Blur, Assisted Culling, portrait retouching, dust removal and adaptive presets. The displayed Lightroom plan was ₹382.32 per month including GST, billed annually each month. The Photography plan, which includes Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Photoshop and 1TB storage, was displayed at ₹599 per month for the first year under the checked offer. See the official India Photography plan page for current terms.
Recommended Free Tools
Best practical combination: Lightroom Classic for the library and RAW files, plus Photoshop for images that need detailed retouching or compositing.
3. Affinity Photo 2: best subscription-free advanced alternative
Affinity Photo is aimed at users who want advanced pixel editing, layers, masks, retouching and compositing without committing to Adobe’s monthly subscription.
It is a strong candidate for freelancers, designers and photographers who primarily work with local files. However, the former Serif product URL redirects to an Affinity Studio destination, and the current product, Windows availability, licence model and price should be checked in the live purchase flow before buying. Do not assume that every complex PSD, smart object, plug-in or blend mode will round-trip perfectly.
Choose it if: you want powerful layered editing and predictable local work without an Adobe subscription.

- DisplayPort Daisy-Chaining: Boost daily productivity by effortlessly connecting up to four displays to build the ultimate seamless dual monitor setup and workstation
Check first if: your clients require complex Photoshop documents or your workflow depends on Adobe-specific plug-ins.
4. GIMP: best free all-round photo editor
GIMP is the best free general-purpose alternative for students, hobbyists, budget-conscious creators and technically inclined users. Its capabilities include image manipulation, retouching, restoration, creative composites, graphic-design elements, colour management, scripting and plug-ins.
GIMP can handle cropping, resizing, layers, masks, selections, colour correction and many forms of retouching without a licence fee. Free does not mean inferior image quality: a skilled user can produce excellent results. The trade-off is usually workflow speed, interface polish, automation and support.
GIMP is not primarily a RAW catalogue and batch-processing application. For serious photography, pair it with darktable or RawTherapee, then send selected images to GIMP for layered work.
5. Photoshop Elements 2026: best for beginners
Photoshop Elements 2026 is designed for home users, students and casual photographers who prefer guided tools over the full Photoshop learning curve. Adobe highlights AI-assisted background generation, object addition, restoration and removal.
The India page displayed ₹7,982.70 including GST, with a discounted displayed figure of ₹6,386.16. Adobe also displayed a photo-and-video bundle at ₹11,977 including GST. Crucially, Elements 2026 is presented as a three-year term licence, not perpetual ownership.
Choose it if: you want guided editing, everyday corrections and a simpler interface.
Avoid it if: you need a full agency workflow, advanced Photoshop compatibility or extensive professional compositing.
6. DxO PhotoLab 9: best for noise reduction and lens correction
DxO PhotoLab 9 is a specialist RAW editor for photographers who prioritise technically clean files. Its strengths include DeepPRIME machine-learning noise reduction, DxO optical modules, lens softness compensation and local adjustments.
The official page identifies version 9 and notes version 9.6 updates. DxO advertises a 30-day free trial without requiring card details. Check camera and lens support before purchase, particularly if you use a newly released camera.
PhotoLab is not an all-purpose poster, thumbnail or graphic-design application. It is best considered a technical RAW tool rather than a universal Photoshop replacement. There is no basis for saying it is universally better than Lightroom without controlled testing.

7. Capture One: best for studio and tethered photography
Capture One is a specialised choice for product, fashion, portrait and studio photographers who need tethered capture, structured client workflows and detailed colour control.
Recommended Free Tools
It is excessive for phone photos, occasional social posts and simple corrections. Pricing and licence options change, so check the India checkout page for currency, GST, renewal terms and available plans before purchase. The current India pricing was not reliably verified here.
8. ON1 Photo RAW 2026.5: best all-in-one alternative
ON1 Photo RAW 2026.5 combines RAW processing, AI tools, traditional editing, layers, retouching, photo management and sharing in one application. It is aimed at users who would otherwise combine Lightroom and Photoshop.
The all-in-one approach can reduce application switching, but it also creates a denser interface. Test the trial on your own PC, especially if you work with high-resolution RAW files or AI features. ON1 may replace parts of an Adobe workflow, but it should not be assumed to reproduce every Photoshop or client-collaboration feature.
9. Corel PaintShop Pro: best Windows-only subscription-free option
Corel PaintShop Pro is positioned as a subscription-free Windows photo editor with correction, AI tools and graphic-design capabilities. It can suit Windows users who want a broad local editor without an Adobe monthly bill.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
However, the currently captured official page prominently lists PaintShop Pro 2023 and PaintShop Pro 2023 Ultimate. Confirm the current edition, camera RAW support, Windows compatibility and upgrade policy before treating it as a current market leader or buying it.
10. darktable: best free Lightroom-style RAW workflow
darktable is a free, open-source RAW developer and photo-management application. It is better suited to non-destructive photography workflows, catalogues and repeated adjustments than to posters, text-heavy thumbnails or complex composites.
Its technical interface may take time to learn, but it avoids licence fees and works well for photographers who want a local Lightroom-style alternative. Check support for your camera files and assess performance on your hardware.
11. RawTherapee 5.13: best free technical RAW developer
RawTherapee offers detailed RAW control, including a non-destructive 32-bit floating-point processing engine. It is free and open source under GPLv3 and supports Windows, macOS and Linux.
The official site records RawTherapee 5.13 as released on July 26, 2026. It is a RAW developer, not a complete layer-based design application. Pair it with GIMP, Krita or another pixel editor for compositing.
12. Paint.NET: best lightweight editor
Paint.NET is a fast choice for cropping, resizing, basic colour adjustments, layers and simple effects on modest Windows PCs. It suits students, office users and anyone who does not need a professional RAW catalogue or complex masking.

It is not a serious replacement for Photoshop, Affinity Photo or GIMP in complex projects. Its RAW, catalogue, advanced masking and professional colour-management capabilities are limited. Check whether you are downloading the free desktop version or a paid Microsoft Store version.
Choose by your actual workflow
Passport and ID photos
Use Paint.NET, GIMP, Photoshop Elements or Photoshop for cropping, resizing, background cleanup and layout. Verify the required dimensions, background colour and print specifications for the organisation requesting the image. Do not rely on an editor to determine official photo rules.

Choose Lightroom Classic, Capture One, ON1 Photo RAW or darktable for cataloguing, batch corrections, culling and presets. Use Photoshop, Affinity Photo or GIMP for selected portraits, object removal and detailed retouching.
Amazon, Flipkart and small-business product photos
Photoshop, Affinity Photo, GIMP and PaintShop Pro are suitable for background cleanup, precise selections, shadows, colour correction and export preparation. A RAW developer is useful when the original files need exposure or white-balance recovery first.
YouTube thumbnails, Instagram posts and advertisements
Photoshop is the most flexible choice when photography, text and compositing are combined. Affinity Photo and GIMP are capable alternatives. Paint.NET is sufficient for simple layouts, while Photopea can help with PSD-compatible work when installation is not possible.
Free editing
Choose GIMP for general pixel editing, darktable for catalogue-based RAW work or RawTherapee for technical RAW control. Expect to spend more time learning and configuring the workflow.
Older or modest PCs
Start with Paint.NET or Photoshop Elements. GIMP may work well for moderate projects. Large RAW batches, high-resolution files and AI features can be slow even when an application technically opens.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Free versus paid software
Free software is usually enough for cropping, resizing, brightness and colour correction, simple layers, basic background removal, web graphics and learning editing fundamentals. Paid software generally earns its cost through faster batch workflows, polished masking, better RAW profiles, automation, official support, tethered shooting, ecosystem integration and client-oriented features.
The final image is not automatically better because the software is paid. The meaningful difference is often how quickly and reliably you can reach the result.
Subscription, licence, free and web models
| Model | Advantages | Risks and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | Lower initial cost, continuous updates, cloud services and ecosystem access | Recurring cost; cancellation, account and renewal terms matter |
| One-time or term licence | Clearer long-term budgeting and no monthly bill | Major upgrades may cost extra; a term licence expires |
| Free/open source | No licence cost, often offline and modifiable | More learning, community support and manual setup |
| Web-based | No installation and easy access across computers | Internet, browser performance, privacy and export limitations |
Adobe says Creative Cloud desktop applications are installed directly on the computer and do not require a continuous internet connection to run. That does not mean every feature works offline: activation, synchronisation, cloud libraries and AI services may need connectivity. Cloud storage is also not a complete backup.

An 8GB RAM system with integrated graphics and an SSD is suitable for Paint.NET, moderate GIMP projects, Photoshop Elements and basic web editing. Large RAW batches and AI tools may be slow.

Mid-range editing PC
A modern multi-core CPU, 16GB RAM and an SSD with sufficient scratch space is a practical target for Photoshop, Lightroom, Affinity Photo, darktable, RawTherapee and PaintShop Pro.
Professional photography PC
For large catalogues, high-resolution images and multitasking, 32GB RAM or more, a fast SSD for catalogues and cache, and a capable modern GPU are sensible. A calibrated monitor matters for colour-critical work. Keep an independent backup; editing software is not a backup system.
Do not treat these tiers as universal system requirements. Check the vendor’s live requirements for your exact version, camera files, image sizes and AI features before buying.

Common problems to check before committing
RAW files look different in different applications
Different RAW interpretations, missing camera or lens profiles, colour-profile conversion and unsupported metadata can change the result. Test a representative RAW file before moving an entire workflow.
PSD compatibility is incomplete
Opening and saving PSD files does not guarantee perfect support for smart objects, adjustment layers, effects, plug-ins, fonts or blend modes. If a client requires a complex PSD, keep the original in Photoshop, test a sample file and flatten only a copy.
AI tools do not work offline
Generative fill, cloud sync, online libraries and some removal or enhancement services may require internet access even when ordinary local editing works without it.
Low-end hardware makes a powerful editor a poor choice
Feature count is less important than a responsive workflow. A simpler editor that opens quickly and exports reliably may be better than a professional application that constantly swaps to disk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which photo editor is best for beginners in India?
Photoshop Elements 2026 is the easiest guided paid option. Paint.NET is better for very basic editing, while GIMP is the strongest free general-purpose choice if you are willing to learn.
What is the best free photo editor for PC?
GIMP is the best free all-round pixel editor. For RAW photography, choose darktable or RawTherapee instead.
