To cut around a face in classic Microsoft Paint, use Select > Free-form selection, trace around the face, and copy the selection. This creates a roughly outlined selection—not automatically a professional transparent cutout. If you need the background genuinely removed, use Paint’s Object Select on a supported Windows 11 Copilot+ PC, or use Microsoft Photos or Designer.
First, decide what “cut around” means
These terms describe different results:
- Crop: Removes the outer edges of a rectangular image. It does not follow the shape of a face.
- Free-form selection: Lets you draw an outline around the face so you can copy or move that area.
- Background removal: Separates the face or person from the rest of the photograph and can produce a transparent background.
- Object selection: Uses automatic detection to identify an object, where that Paint feature is available.
Classic Paint is suitable for a quick, rough face selection. It does not have the edge-aware masking controls of a dedicated image editor. Microsoft also distinguishes ordinary cropping from background removal.

- Make a copy of the original photograph. In Paint, use File > Save as and edit the copy.
- Open the copy in Paint. You can right-click the image, choose Open with, and select Paint, or open Paint and choose File > Open.
- Use the zoom control to enlarge the eyes, hairline, ears, jaw, and chin. Toolbar placement varies between Windows versions.
How to manually cut around a face in classic Paint
- Open the image and choose Select from the Paint toolbar.
- Choose Free-form selection, not Rectangular selection.
- Click and drag around the face. Follow the hair, ears, jaw, and chin with short movements around curved areas.
- Keep the outline slightly outside the face rather than cutting into skin, hair, or ears. Avoid including shoulders or background unless you want them in the result.
- Return to the starting point and release the mouse to close the selection. If Paint closes the outline with an unwanted straight segment, undo it and trace again more carefully.
- Press Ctrl+C to copy the selected area.
- Open a new Paint canvas or another image and press Ctrl+V to paste the face.
- If the destination canvas is oversized, use the crop tool to trim the extra space.
- Save the result as a new file, keeping the original photograph untouched.
For a simple image, this is often enough for a profile picture, collage, thumbnail, or meme. You can also paste a screenshot or capture into Paint and edit it there; Microsoft documents related screenshot and Paint workflows in its copy-and-paste guidance.
Can classic Paint make the background transparent?
Not reliably. Classic Paint’s Transparent selection option is designed mainly to make a selected background color blend into the destination. It works best when the background is a single, flat color that contrasts clearly with the face.

It is not the same as intelligent background removal. Hair, shadows, glasses, patterned backgrounds, and colors similar to the skin can leave visible pixels or jagged edges. Saving as PNG also does not guarantee transparency; the image must actually contain transparent pixels.

- Transparent selection may be disabled.
- The background color may not match the destination.
- The original image may still have an opaque background that Paint cannot intelligently remove.
Try pasting onto a contrasting color so unwanted pixels are easier to see. You can manually erase some excess background, but switch to Photos, Designer, Object Select, or a layer-based editor when the edge must be clean.

Use Paint’s Object Select when it is available
Microsoft documents Object Select as a feature for eligible Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. It is not a universal button in every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation of Paint. If you do not see it, your hardware, Windows version, or Paint build may not support it.
- Open the photograph in Paint.
- Choose Object Select from the toolbar.
- Hover over and click the face or person.
- Wait for Paint to highlight the detected object.
- Copy, move, erase, or otherwise edit the selection.
- Zoom in and inspect the hair, ears, glasses, jawline, and nearby background.
Object Select can be faster than tracing, but it may select the entire person rather than only the face, or identify a nearby object. Detection can also be less accurate with poor image quality, overlapping subjects, fine hair, glasses, or similar-colored backgrounds. Remove the background in Microsoft Photos
Use Microsoft Photos when you need a genuine face-or-person cutout instead of a face enclosed by leftover background.

- Open the image in Microsoft Photos.
- Open the image-editing controls and choose the Background panel.
- Allow Photos to automatically select the background.
- Use Add mask to restore areas that were incorrectly removed.
- Use Remove mask to remove missed background areas.
- Choose Remove, then apply the edit and save a copy.
Photos also supports background blurring or replacement where available. Microsoft says this separation is performed locally on the device. Exact controls can vary with the Windows version and Photos app build. See Microsoft’s Photos editing guidance.
Use Microsoft Designer as another fallback
If your Paint installation lacks Object Select, Microsoft Designer may provide more suitable image-editing controls:
- Open the image in Photos.
- Select the Designer icon in the title bar, where available.
- Open the image-editing controls.
- Choose background removal or an object-specific editing action.
- Correct the result and export a copy.
Designer’s available controls can include cropping, adjustments, filters, text, background removal, and object editing. Microsoft’s Designer documentation explains the current integrated workflow.

Fix rough edges, missing hair, and halos
Hair or ears are cut off
The outline was probably too tight. Undo the edit or reopen the untouched copy, zoom in, and trace slightly outside the hair and ears. Automatic tools can also miss fine hair, so correct the mask manually when possible.
The face has a colored fringe or halo
This usually means background pixels were included around the edge, or similar colors were blended during automatic removal. Redo the selection, erase at high zoom, or use an editor with layer masks and edge-refinement controls.
The face-only cutout becomes a whole-person cutout
Automatic object tools may identify the entire person. For a head-only result, use Paint’s Free-form selection and trace around the head, or refine the mask in Photos or a dedicated editor.

The image looks blurry
Start with the highest-resolution original, avoid repeatedly resizing and resaving, and save the final version once. Keep the source file unchanged.

When in doubt, use Free-form selection for a quick copy and Photos or Designer for a true background-free image. If Paint does not show Object Select, do not treat that as an error: the feature is limited by Windows edition, hardware, and app availability. Undo the current edit, reopen your saved copy, and switch methods rather than repeatedly damaging the original.
