Figma AI Generated Apple Weather Lookalikes. Figma Blamed Its Design System—not Training Data.

Figma’s early Make Designs beta generated Apple Weather-like interfaces in three reported attempts. Figma disabled the feature and blamed insufficiently vetted design-system assets—not training on Apple’s app.

Figma AI did not demonstrably copy Apple’s Weather app every time. In July 2024, designer Andy Allen reported that Figma’s limited-beta Make Designs feature produced substantially similar Apple Weather-like interfaces in three attempts. Figma temporarily disabled the feature, denied training it on Apple or other existing app designs, and later blamed insufficiently vetted assets in its own commissioned design systems.

What happened

Figma announced its first major AI features on June 26, 2024. One of them, Make Designs, was designed to turn a text prompt into an initial user-interface layout and component arrangement—essentially a way to help designers get past the blank canvas.

On July 1, designer and FiftyThree developer Andy Allen published examples of a weather-app prompt producing screens that closely resembled Apple’s Weather app. Allen said he ran the prompt three times and received substantially similar results. His concern was practical as much as technical: a polished AI-generated mockup can look original enough to ship while retaining a recognizable product’s layout, visual hierarchy, or component choices.

Figma responded by temporarily disabling Make Designs on July 2 while it investigated. This was a rollback of the text-to-interface feature—not a shutdown of all Figma AI tools.

Contemporaneous reporting from 9to5Mac documents Allen’s examples, his three reported attempts, and Figma’s initial response.

What was actually being tested?

The incident involved Make Designs, not every AI feature in Figma and not a general autonomous app-building system. The feature was a limited-beta generator for first-pass UI concepts.

That distinction matters because Figma offered several separate AI capabilities, including:

  • Make Designs: generated initial layouts and component combinations from text prompts.
  • Visual Search: searched designs and files the user could access.
  • Text and workflow tools: helped with tasks such as renaming layers, translating text, generating images, and prototyping.

Evidence about Make Designs should not be treated as evidence that all of these systems used the same data, models, or generation process.

Was Figma AI trained on Apple Weather?

Figma said no. CEO Dylan Field said Make Designs was not trained on Figma files, Community files, or existing app designs. Figma’s product explanation described the feature as using third-party, off-the-shelf models without additional training or fine-tuning.

Figma’s later technical retrospective identified models including OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Amazon Titan. According to Figma, the system supplied the models with metadata describing hand-built components and examples, then used that context to assemble a design. Amazon Titan generated images used in the output.

That explanation does not make the output automatically original or legally safe. “Not trained on Apple Weather” rules out one specific explanation; it does not prove that every component in the output was independently created, nor does it eliminate the possibility that generic prompts and highly familiar interface patterns will converge on a recognizable product.

The public record also does not independently establish the provenance of every problematic asset. Figma denied that Apple’s files or assets were used and said the design system was responsible. It did not publicly identify where each late-added component or example screen originated.

Figma’s launch announcement describes Make Designs and its beta status. Its later retrospective explains the architecture and named models.

What Figma admitted

Figma’s explanation was more specific than saying that an AI model made an unpredictable mistake.

The company said it had commissioned extensive mobile and desktop design systems containing hundreds of components and example screens. Shortly before its Config conference, new components and examples were added. Figma said those additions were not vetted carefully enough and that some resembled aspects of real-world applications.

For particular prompts, those assets could then appear in generated designs. In other words, the failure was not presented as proof that a model had memorized Apple Weather. Figma attributed it to a product pipeline that combined:

  1. a broad prompt such as a request for a weather app;
  2. an off-the-shelf language model;
  3. metadata and examples from Figma’s design system; and
  4. insufficient quality assurance on recently added, opinionated assets.

Figma said it removed the problematic assets, disabled Make Designs, and began developing a stronger quality-assurance process before restoring the capability.

Did it copy Apple Weather every time?

That wording should be treated as the incident’s framing, not as a measured product-wide failure rate.

Allen reported three attempts with similar Apple Weather-like results. The available evidence concerns one person’s prompt, examples, and the early limited-beta implementation. It does not establish that every user, prompt, account, model configuration, or later version produced the same result.

“Every time” is therefore too broad as a technical claim. “Repeatedly generated Apple Weather-like results in one reported test” is more precise.

Was the result illegal?

There was no public legal adjudication establishing that Figma or a user infringed Apple’s rights, and the cited record does not report an Apple lawsuit or removal demand.

A visual resemblance is not automatically copyright infringement. Depending on the jurisdiction and the elements involved, different questions could concern copyright, trademarks, design rights, trade dress, or platform rules. Familiar interface conventions—such as cards, tabs, navigation bars, and weather data—may be difficult to protect on their own, while a distinctive combination of elements can create greater risk.

The practical conclusion is less ambiguous than the legal one: AI-generated design is not automatically cleared design. A team that ships the result remains responsible for reviewing it, regardless of whether a human designer intentionally copied another app.

What happened to Make Designs?

Date Event
June 26, 2024 Figma announced Figma AI and the limited-beta Make Designs feature.
July 1, 2024 Andy Allen published examples of repeated Apple Weather-like results.
July 2, 2024 Figma said it had disabled Make Designs while investigating.
July 17, 2024 Figma published its retrospective, citing insufficiently vetted design-system additions.
September 24, 2024 Figma reintroduced the capability under the name First Draft.

First Draft gave users a choice of four design libraries, ranging from low-fidelity wireframes to higher-fidelity app and website designs. That approach was intended to make the generated results less uniformly opinionated and give designers more control over the starting point.

Figma’s current editorial note says First Draft has since been folded into its purpose-built design agent. That does not mean the exact 2024 implementation still exists unchanged, and the relaunch is not independent proof that every similarity risk was eliminated.

Other Figma AI features, including Visual Search and tools for renaming layers and translating text, remained available in limited beta while Make Designs was rolled back.

The design lesson: polished is not original

The important failure was not simply that an AI model might have “remembered” Apple Weather. It was that a production-facing design tool combined a generic prompt with highly opinionated component examples and insufficient QA, producing an interface that looked too much like a real product.

This creates several recurring risks:

  • Prompt-to-template collapse: a generic request may map to familiar layouts rather than generate genuinely varied concepts.
  • Low output diversity: repeated prompts may return nearly identical compositions.
  • Hidden example influence: supplied components and examples can shape the result more strongly than users realize.
  • False originality: high visual polish can conceal a recognizable structure.
  • Human over-trust: teams may assume that an AI-generated screen is safe because no one manually copied it.
  • Version confusion: Make Designs, First Draft, and the later design agent are related stages, not interchangeable names for one unchanged product.

A practical review checklist for AI-generated interfaces

  1. Inspect the whole composition. Look beyond colors and text. Check hierarchy, spacing, icon placement, navigation, cards, tabs, illustrations, and data visualizations.
  2. Compare with major products. Review direct competitors, platform-native apps, and well-known category leaders—especially when the prompt describes a familiar product type.
  3. Replace suspicious structures. Changing a color or swapping an icon may not be enough if the layout and interaction model remain recognizable.
  4. Use an approved internal design system. Controlled components and documented provenance reduce the chance of importing questionable examples.
  5. Record provenance. Keep the prompt, date, tool, disclosed model, source library, and substantial edits in the project record.
  6. Prefer lower-fidelity exploration when appropriate. Wireframes and less opinionated concepts are less likely to create a false sense that a finished-looking screen has already been cleared.
  7. Obtain human design and legal review before launch. Escalate anything that resembles a competitor’s distinctive interface or brand language.

The accurate bottom line

Figma AI was not proven to have been trained on Apple’s Weather app. The early Make Designs beta did, however, repeatedly generate Apple Weather-like screens in a reported three-test sequence, prompting Figma to disable the feature. Figma later said insufficiently vetted assets in its own commissioned design systems—not Apple training data—caused the resemblance.

The episode remains a useful warning for designers and product teams: an AI-generated mockup is a starting point, not a guarantee of originality, clean provenance, or legal clearance.
