Midjourney works through both Discord and its website. To generate images in Discord, you need a Discord account, a Midjourney account, an active subscription, and the correct accounts connected. The quickest workflow is to open an eligible Midjourney channel or a direct message with the Midjourney Bot, run /imagine, and refine the resulting image grid.
Discord is useful for command-based creation, community examples, direct messages, and project-specific servers. It is not the only Midjourney interface, and a private Discord space does not automatically make your creations private on Midjourney’s website.
What you need before using Midjourney on Discord
- A Discord account.
- A Midjourney account.
- An active Midjourney subscription. Midjourney’s current Discord Quick Start says a subscription is required before creating images.
- A Discord account correctly connected to the intended Midjourney account.
- A channel, direct message, or server where the Midjourney Bot has access.
Midjourney’s website and Discord use the same account and subscription ecosystem. Images generated in Discord are also available through your Midjourney web account. See the official Getting Started Guide.
How to subscribe to Midjourney
- Go to Midjourney’s account page.
- Sign in or create an account.
- Open the subscription or plans area.
- Choose a plan and complete payment.
- Return to Discord after the subscription becomes active.
Do not assume that Discord offers a current free trial. Midjourney’s current Discord documentation describes an active subscription as a requirement for image creation.

Connect the correct Discord account
Account identity is the most important part of setup. If you are signing up for the first time and intend to work in Discord, use the Discord sign-up path. If you already have a Midjourney subscription:
- Sign in to Midjourney.
- Open your account settings or Manage Profile page.
- Select Connect Discord.
- Sign in to Discord in the authorization window.
- Check the Discord username shown in the window.
- Select Authorize.
- Return to Midjourney and confirm that the intended Discord username is shown as connected.
Do not authorize an account merely because the email address looks familiar. An incorrect sign-in can create or connect a different Discord identity. A Discord account previously used to make Midjourney images may also be unavailable for connection to another existing subscription. If you signed up with Google and encounter a history or connection problem, Midjourney recommends trying the Discord login associated with the same email address. Disconnecting an account may not be self-service. Midjourney says billing support handles disconnection, and the account must retain at least one login method.
Join the official Midjourney Discord server
- Open Discord.
- Select the + button at the bottom of the server list.
- Choose Join a Server.
- Enter
http://discord.gg/midjourney. - Join the server.
- Open a permitted
general-#ornewbie-#channel.
The bot does not generate in every channel on the official server. Midjourney specifically says that newbie-11 and higher have been archived and cannot be used. If commands are missing, move to an eligible channel rather than repeatedly resending the same prompt.
Use Midjourney in a Discord DM
A direct message is usually the clearest beginner workflow because public channels move quickly.
- Open the official Midjourney server.
- Find the Midjourney Bot in the member list or select its username in a message.
- Open a direct message.
- Send a message to start or reopen the conversation.
- Use
/imaginein the DM.
All subscribed members can generate in DMs regardless of plan. If you cannot message the bot, check Discord’s server privacy settings and make sure Direct Messages are enabled. A DM reduces Discord clutter, but it does not automatically make images private on Midjourney’s website. Publication privacy requires Stealth Mode.

Create your first Midjourney image
- Enter an eligible channel or open a DM with the bot.
- Type
/in the message box. - Select the Midjourney
/imaginecommand. - Enter a prompt describing the image.
- Press Enter or Send.
- Accept the Terms of Service if prompted.
- Wait for the job to finish.
The initial result is normally a grid of four image options. Generation uses GPU time. Use /info to check account information and remaining Fast time.

For example:
/imagine prompt: a small glass greenhouse on a rooftop at blue hour, warm interior lights, rain-wet metal, cinematic editorial photographyA useful prompt identifies the subject, setting, viewpoint or composition, lighting, materials, mood, and—where supported—the intended aspect ratio or format. There is no universal magic formula. Start with the central idea, inspect the grid, then change one or two variables at a time.
What the Midjourney result buttons do
Button labels and available controls can change with the model and interface. Use the labels shown beneath your own job. Midjourney’s current Quick Start describes these controls as follows:
- U1–U4: Separate the selected image from the grid so it is easier to access additional tools and download it. Older tutorials may describe these simply as “upscale” buttons.
- Reroll: Runs the prompt again to create a different result.
- Favorite: Marks an image for easier discovery on the Midjourney website.
- Web: Opens the image in the Midjourney web gallery.
- Variations: Where displayed, creates related alternatives based on a selected result.
For current behavior, consult the Discord Quick Start rather than relying on an older tutorial.
Save and find your images
On desktop, select the image to open it full-size, then right-click and choose Save image. On mobile, long-press the image and use the download control.
Your creations are also available on Midjourney’s website. Use the Organize page to locate them. Discord’s inbox and notifications can help you find recent jobs, but public channels become difficult to search as activity increases. DMs, a personal server, bookmarks, and consistent prompt names are better for organizing projects.
If you have a Job ID, the /show command can resurface a job in Discord. Midjourney also says /show can make an ephemeral job visible again for interaction.

/private is deprecated and replaced by /stealth. Midjourney also lists /pixels and /idea as deprecated. See the current Discord Command List.
Settings, speed, and privacy modes
To open the settings panel, type /settings, select the Midjourney Bot command, send it, and use the panel that appears.
- Fast Mode: Processes jobs faster and uses limited Fast GPU time.
- Relax Mode: May queue more slowly but provides unlimited image generations on Standard, Pro, and Mega plans under Midjourney’s current plan terms. It does not mean unlimited Fast time.
- Turbo Mode: Processes jobs faster with higher resource consumption or plan implications. Check the current account display before using it heavily.
- Public Mode: Jobs are published.
- Stealth Mode: Intended to keep images and videos unpublished or private; available only on Pro and Mega.
A private Discord server controls who can see the Discord message. It does not automatically control publication on Midjourney.com. Discord visibility, Midjourney website publication, and Stealth Mode are separate issues.
Use your own images
- Upload an image to Discord using the + button or drag and drop.
- Send it and wait for the upload to finish.
- Copy the image URL.
- Place that URL in an
/imagineprompt, or drag the thumbnail into the prompt field where supported. - Add text describing the desired transformation.
A Discord message link is not the same as an image URL. A blob: URL usually means the image has not finished uploading or the URL is local to your browser. Upload source material in a DM or private server when it contains sensitive information, because images uploaded in a public channel may be visible to other users. See Hosting Images in Discord.
Image Prompts, Omni References, and Style References may have model-specific syntax and compatibility. Check the current Version documentation before assuming a parameter works with your selected model.
Which Midjourney plan should you choose?
The following prices were checked on August 18, 2026 and can change. Midjourney’s comparison page lists annual billing as 20% cheaper when paid upfront.

Basic is the lowest-cost entry point but has limited Fast time. Standard is the practical choice for frequent generation because Relax image generation is included. Pro is the plan to consider when Stealth Mode, client work, or additional Fast capacity matters. Mega is difficult to justify for casual use and is intended for users who genuinely need the highest listed Fast allocation.

All plans support working solo in Discord DMs. Midjourney states that a company with more than $1 million USD in annual gross revenue must purchase Pro or Mega under its stated commercial terms. Consult the current plan comparison and Terms of Service before commercial use.

What is current about Midjourney’s models?
Midjourney’s documentation homepage currently advertises V8.1, including an --hd option for higher-resolution 2K images, along with Image Prompts, Prompt Shortener, and an updated Describe tool. Access may depend on the account, selected model, and personalization requirements. Treat model names, parameters, resolution claims, and controls as changeable rather than universal. Check the current documentation before building a workflow around them.
Discord server, DM, or personal server?

To use a personal server, invite the Midjourney Bot and give it access to the relevant channel. Each person using the bot needs their own Midjourney subscription.
Troubleshoot common Midjourney Discord problems
“I cannot see /imagine.”
- Confirm that the channel or server allows the Midjourney Bot.
- Confirm the correct Discord account is connected and subscribed.
- In the official server, move to an eligible
newbie-#orgeneral-#channel. - Update Discord.
- In Discord, open Settings → Accessibility and turn off Use the legacy chat input.
- Try a DM with the bot.
- Use
/helpor the official#supportchannel.
“The bot does not respond.”
Check that you are in the right channel, the bot has permission in a personal server, Discord is updated, and the correct account is connected. The job may simply be queued or processing. Check /info, retry in a DM, confirm the bot appears in the server member list, and ask the server owner to review permissions. Accept the Terms of Service if prompted. Avoid creating many duplicate jobs while diagnosing the problem.
“I cannot DM the bot.”
Check Discord’s privacy settings and make sure direct messages are enabled. If the problem continues, try an eligible public channel.

You may be looking in the wrong public channel, another server, or a DM. Check Midjourney’s Organize page, Discord inbox or notifications, and use /show with the Job ID if available. Moderation-related jobs may be ephemeral. Trashing a creation does not necessarily make it private or permanently delete it; permanent deletion requires the relevant Midjourney data-deletion process.
“My uploaded image does not work.”
Make sure the upload finished, use an image URL rather than a Discord message link, and do not use an expired local blob: URL. The image must be uploaded somewhere the bot can access it.

“Why can other people see my images?”
Separate these three questions:
- Who can see the Discord message?
- Is the creation published through Midjourney’s website or discovery features?
- Is Stealth Mode enabled?
A DM or private server answers only the first question. Pro or Mega Stealth Mode is the relevant Midjourney feature for unpublished or private treatment.
Discord versus Midjourney’s website
Discord is best for slash commands, community discovery, direct messages, and project channels. The website is better suited to browsing the gallery, organizing creations, and using Midjourney’s broader current interface. They are not separate products: both connect to the same Midjourney account and subscription. Choose the interface that fits the task.
If Midjourney is a poor fit, consider the workflow rather than searching for a universally “better” generator. Adobe Firefly may suit Adobe-centered work, ChatGPT may suit conversational creation and editing, Canva AI may suit templates and marketing graphics, Leonardo.Ai may suit broader visual-production tooling, and Ideogram may suit typography-heavy designs. These are workflow distinctions, not universal quality rankings.

Can I use Midjourney without Discord?
Yes. Midjourney also provides a web interface. Discord is one creation workflow, not a requirement for every Midjourney user.
Do I need a paid Midjourney plan to create images in Discord?
Yes. Midjourney’s current Discord Quick Start says an active subscription is required before creating images.
Can I use Midjourney in a private Discord server?
Yes, if the Midjourney Bot is invited and has access. Each user still needs a subscription, and the server’s privacy does not automatically make creations private on Midjourney.com.

They are less visible than public channels, but DMs do not automatically prevent publication on Midjourney’s website. Stealth Mode is the relevant Pro and Mega feature for private treatment.
What happened to the Midjourney /private command?
It is deprecated. Midjourney lists /stealth as its replacement.
Are Midjourney controls identical for every model?
No. Button labels, parameters, and availability can change with the model, account, and interface. Use the controls displayed beneath your own job and check current documentation.
The Bottom Line
For the simplest setup, connect the correct Discord account, subscribe, open a Midjourney DM, and run /imagine. Use the website’s Organize page to find your work, and choose Pro or Mega only when Stealth Mode or higher Fast capacity justifies the cost.
