There is no legitimate general-purpose way to remove a Getty Images watermark and download the underlying stock image for free. A watermark-free Getty file normally requires the appropriate licence. Getty’s free Comp download is intended for testing and work-in-progress use—not for a published, public, promotional, or commercial project.
If you need the exact image, license it. If you need a genuinely free image, use Getty Open Content or another source with clear usage terms. If you already paid, retrieve the licensed file through your Getty account rather than editing the preview.
What a Getty watermark means
A Getty Images preview is usually a watermarked, lower-resolution evaluation file. It is not the same as the licensed final asset.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Preview or Comp: A watermarked file for evaluating an image or testing a layout.
- Licensed download: The unwatermarked file supplied after the required purchase or authorised access.
- Royalty-free: A licensing model, not a free download. Getty explains that royalty-free generally means the fee is paid once rather than through continuing royalties. See Getty’s licence agreement.
- Rights-managed or rights-ready: Usage may be limited by factors such as territory, duration, medium, placement, size, or audience.
- Editorial: Content intended for reporting or documentary contexts may not be suitable for advertising, merchandise, sponsorship, or other promotional uses.
Removing visible pixels and obtaining permission are separate issues. Even if editing software creates a clean-looking image, it does not grant rights to use Getty’s underlying photograph or artwork.

What Getty’s free Comp download is actually for
Getty allows users to download a Comp from an image details page or search-results page. It can help you test an image in a private layout, presentation draft, pitch, or other work-in-progress project.
- Open the image’s Getty details page or locate it in search results.
- Select Comp.
- Download the watermarked preview for evaluation.
- Replace it with the licensed download before publication, delivery, advertising, or other public use.
Getty’s downloading guidance describes Comp use as limited to test or sample work for up to 30 days after download. That period is not a free commercial licence: the Comp cannot be used in final or publicly available material without the required licence. Read Getty’s downloading guidance.
How to get the unwatermarked image legally
- Identify the asset. Record the Getty asset ID, contributor, collection, and the exact image you intend to use.
- Define the use. Note whether it will appear on a website, blog, social account, presentation, advertisement, package, product, merchandise, client project, or printed publication. Also consider territory, duration, audience, and distribution.
- Check the category and restrictions. Royalty-free, rights-managed, rights-ready, and editorial content can have different conditions. Do not assume one purchase covers every possible use.
- Select the appropriate licence or authorised subscription access. Review the licence terms for the individual asset and intended use.
- Complete the purchase or access process. Licensing normally gives you permission to use the image; it does not transfer ownership of the underlying copyright. Getty explains image licensing here.
- Download the final file. Use the licensed download supplied through your Getty account, not the Comp preview.
- Keep your records. Save the invoice, order confirmation, licence terms, asset ID, and download information with the project files.
Credit requirements and editorial restrictions may apply. Follow the terms attached to your licence, especially for client work, advertising, branded content, products, and merchandise.

Getty Open Content
Getty Images stock previews should not be confused with the J. Paul Getty Museum’s Open Content Program. Getty says many high-resolution images for which it holds the rights, or which depict public-domain works, are available under CC0 through Open Content. Qualifying images can be downloaded without a permission fee. Check Getty’s Open Content and terms information.
Before using an image:
- Look for an explicit CC0, public-domain, or other licence designation.
- Read the terms for the individual item.
- Confirm whether commercial use is covered.
- Check whether attribution is requested or required.
- Consider separate privacy, publicity, trademark, or other third-party rights relating to people or objects shown.
An image appearing on a Getty-owned website is not automatically free to reuse. Getty Images and Getty Museum Open Content are different repositories with different rights information.

Other clearly licensed sources
For contemporary lifestyle, business, portrait, sports, or commercial imagery, use a provider that clearly states the permitted licence. Verify commercial-use, attribution, modification, resale, and model-release conditions before publishing. Search visibility or a copy found on social media does not establish ownership or permission.
Shortcuts that do not solve the rights problem
Do not use these methods to turn a Getty preview into an unlicensed final asset:
- AI inpainting, cloning, blurring, or covering: These alter or reconstruct pixels but do not create a licence. They can also damage faces, hands, text, textures, and repeating patterns.
- Cropping: Cropping out a watermark may still leave an unauthorised reproduction and can harm the composition.
- Screenshotting: A screenshot is usually lower quality and does not avoid copyright or licence restrictions.
- Unofficial downloaders or browser tools: They may create account-security, malware, privacy, and rights-management risks.
- Watermark-removal websites: Uploading a confidential draft or client concept can expose project material. A processed file is still not licensed.
- Adding credit: Attribution does not replace permission unless the applicable licence specifically allows the use.
Getty’s website terms also prohibit removing copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notices and prohibit unauthorised modification of covered site content. Review Getty’s website terms.
If you already paid for the image
If a licensed image still appears watermarked, do not edit the preview. Instead:
- Sign in to the Getty account used for the purchase.
- Check the asset details and open Download History.
- Download the licensed file and confirm its resolution and asset ID.
- Review the order confirmation if you selected the wrong size or licence.
- Contact Getty customer support with the asset ID and order details if the final download is unavailable.
If you are using a client’s account, confirm that the licence covers the client’s project and that you are authorised to access and use the file.

If an editorial image has been used in advertising, sponsorship, branded content, or another commercial context, pause publication and verify the licence. If a Comp has already become public through a website, portfolio, social post, presentation, or advertisement, replace it promptly and review the use with the relevant rights holder or legal adviser.
If the image is yours
The answer is different when you created the image or control its rights. Open the original, unwatermarked master file and export a new copy without your own watermark. If a photographer or agency supplied the image, request the original from them.
Owning a similar image—or having permission to use a preview—does not make a Getty preview yours. Do not reconstruct a Getty file when the original can be obtained from the copyright owner or licensed source.
Choose the right route
| Situation | Best option | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Testing a design privately | Download a Comp | Watermark remains and it must be replaced before public or final use. |
| Need the exact Getty image publicly | Purchase the appropriate licence | Costs money but provides documented usage rights. |
| Need a free historical or artwork image | Search Getty Open Content | Selection and third-party rights vary. |
| Need generic stock imagery | Use a source with a clear free-use licence | Verify attribution and commercial terms. |
| Already licensed the image | Use Download History or contact support | You may need account or order verification. |
| Own the original | Export from the master file | Only applies when you own or control the rights. |
Frequently asked questions
Is Getty Images free to download?
Some previews can be downloaded as Comps for evaluation. Getty stock content is not generally free for final or public use; the required licence depends on the asset and intended use.
Can I use a Getty Comp in a private client mock-up?
A Comp may be suitable for limited test or work-in-progress use under Getty’s terms, but replace it before the material is published, distributed, or delivered as final work.

Can I use a Getty preview in a YouTube thumbnail?
A public thumbnail is public use. Do not use the watermarked preview unless the applicable licence permits that use; license the image or choose a clearly licensed alternative.
Are Getty Open Content images always safe for commercial use?
No. Check the item’s stated licence and consider third-party privacy, publicity, trademark, and other rights. CC0 applies to the rights covered by the designation, not necessarily every right connected with everything depicted.
Does removing the watermark and crediting Getty make the use legal?
No. Editing the pixels and adding credit do not replace the required licence or override applicable restrictions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the safest free option if I cannot license a Getty image?
Use a Getty Open Content image with an explicit CC0 or public-domain designation, or choose another source whose licence clearly permits your intended use.
What should I do if I accidentally published a Getty Comp?
Remove or replace it promptly, stop further distribution, and review the situation with Getty or the relevant rights holder. Do not keep using the Comp merely because it was downloaded within the 30-day testing period.
