300 DPI is not one fixed pixel size. The required dimensions depend on the physical size of the final print. For image files, the more precise term is usually 300 PPI (pixels per inch): multiply each print dimension in inches by 300.
That means a 4 × 6-inch artwork needs 1,200 × 1,800 pixels, while an 8 × 10-inch print needs 2,400 × 3,000 pixels. The larger the print, the more pixels you need for the same density.
The short answer
Use this formula:
Required pixels = print size in inches × target PPI
For a 300-PPI print:
Width in pixels = print width in inches × 300
Height in pixels = print height in inches × 300
| Finished print | Pixels at 300 PPI |
|---|---|
| 1 × 1 in | 300 × 300 px |
| 2 × 3 in | 600 × 900 px |
| 4 × 6 in | 1,200 × 1,800 px |
| 5 × 7 in | 1,500 × 2,100 px |
| 8 × 10 in | 2,400 × 3,000 px |
| 8.5 × 11 in | 2,550 × 3,300 px |
| 11 × 14 in | 3,300 × 4,200 px |
| 11 × 17 in | 3,300 × 5,100 px |
| 12 × 18 in | 3,600 × 5,400 px |
| 16 × 20 in | 4,800 × 6,000 px |
| 18 × 24 in | 5,400 × 7,200 px |
| 24 × 36 in | 7,200 × 10,800 px |
DPI, PPI, and pixel dimensions explained
Pixels
Pixels are the individual data units in a raster image. A file described as 2,400 × 3,000 pixels contains that many samples of image information. Pixel dimensions alone do not determine its physical print size.

PPI
PPI means pixels per inch. It describes how densely an image’s pixels are distributed when printed. A 2,400 × 3,000-pixel file printed at 300 PPI becomes an 8 × 10-inch print:
2,400 ÷ 300 = 8 inches
3,000 ÷ 300 = 10 inches
Adobe uses PPI for image resolution and explains how it relates the pixel dimensions of a file to its printed dimensions. Learn more about printed image resolution at Adobe.
DPI
DPI means dots per inch and technically describes a printer’s physical ink or toner output. Printers may use several dots to reproduce the color and tone of one image pixel, so a printer advertised at 2,400 DPI does not require an image containing 2,400 pixels per inch.
Design applications and print services commonly use “DPI” informally when they mean image PPI. In practical conversations, “300 DPI image” usually means an image intended to print at 300 PPI. The distinction matters when you are calculating file dimensions. Adobe’s explanation of printer resolution covers the difference.

First decide the finished width and height, then multiply both by 300. For example, an 11 × 17-inch poster requires:
11 × 300 = 3,300 pixels wide
17 × 300 = 5,100 pixels high
For centimeters, convert to inches first:
Required pixels = centimeters ÷ 2.54 × target PPI
A 10 × 15 cm print at 300 PPI needs approximately:
10 ÷ 2.54 × 300 ≈ 1,181 pixels
15 ÷ 2.54 × 300 ≈ 1,772 pixels
So prepare approximately 1,181 × 1,772 pixels, rounding to whole pixels.
Common print sizes for paintings and artwork
For digital reproductions of paintings, the final layout matters more than the original canvas dimensions. Common targets include:
| Use | 300-PPI pixel target |
|---|---|
| 4 × 6 photo or small artwork | 1,200 × 1,800 px |
| 5 × 7 print | 1,500 × 2,100 px |
| Letter-size page | 2,550 × 3,300 px |
| A4, approximately 8.27 × 11.69 in | Approximately 2,481 × 3,507 px |
| 11 × 17 print | 3,300 × 5,100 px |
| 12 × 18 print | 3,600 × 5,400 px |
| 18 × 24 poster | 5,400 × 7,200 px |
| 24 × 36 poster | 7,200 × 10,800 px |
A4 figures are approximate because millimeters are converted to inches and then rounded to whole pixels.

How to check whether an existing image is large enough
Calculate its effective PPI at the intended final size:
Effective PPI = pixel dimension ÷ final printed dimension in inches
For example, a 3,000-pixel-wide scan placed at 10 inches wide has:
3,000 ÷ 10 = 300 PPI
The same file would be 250 PPI at 12 inches wide, 200 PPI at 15 inches wide, and 150 PPI at 20 inches wide. The pixel count has not changed; only the physical size has.

Changing 72 DPI to 300 DPI: what really happens?
Changing a resolution value does not automatically add detail.
Changing metadata without resampling
If resampling is disabled, changing an image from 72 PPI to 300 PPI keeps the same pixels. A 3,000 × 2,000-pixel image remains 3,000 × 2,000 pixels. Only its suggested physical print size changes:
- At 72 PPI: approximately 41.67 × 27.78 inches
- At 300 PPI: 10 × 6.67 inches
Adobe describes this as changing the relationship between existing pixels and physical print dimensions without changing the image data. See Adobe’s Image Size guidance.
Resampling to create more pixels
With resampling enabled, editing software generates additional pixels through interpolation or an enlargement process. This may make a file large enough for a printer’s file requirement, but it cannot reliably recover texture, brushwork, sharp edges, or other detail that the camera or scanner never captured. Upsampling can introduce softness, halos, noise, or invented-looking detail.
Downsampling does the opposite: it removes pixels. Done carefully, it can reduce noise and make an image appear cleaner and sharper.

How to set 300 PPI in Photoshop
- Open the image in Photoshop.
- Choose Image > Image Size.
- Review the pixel dimensions, physical dimensions, and resolution.
- Enter 300 Pixels/Inch if that is the print provider’s requirement or your chosen target.
- Turn Resample off if you only want to change print-size metadata while preserving the existing pixels.
- Turn Resample on only when you need to change the actual pixel dimensions.
- Set the required width and height, then inspect the resulting pixel count.
- Check the artwork at 100% magnification for softness and artifacts.
- Use View > Print Size for an approximate preview of the intended physical output.
Menu labels can vary between applications and software versions. The key decision is whether resampling is enabled: it determines whether the pixel count changes. Photoshop’s current workflow is documented by Adobe’s resolution guide.
What if the image is too small?
- Ask the print provider for its minimum acceptable effective PPI.
- Reduce the physical print size if possible.
- Reconsider the crop and preserve more of the original image.
- Use a reputable enlargement tool only when necessary.
- Inspect the enlarged file at 100% before ordering a print.
- Use a lower effective PPI when the print is large and viewed from a distance, if the printer approves it.
Do not treat a 72-to-300 metadata change as a repair. If the underlying pixel dimensions are insufficient, the choices are to print smaller, enlarge algorithmically with limitations, or accept a lower effective PPI.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs 300 PPI always necessary?
No. 300 PPI is a common high-quality starting point for close-viewed prints, especially small photographs, detailed painting reproductions, fine-art work, brochures, and images containing fine texture. It is not a universal law.
Large posters and signs are often viewed from farther away, so lower effective resolutions may be acceptable. As practical starting ranges, general flyers and brochures may use about 200–300 PPI, posters may use about 100–200 PPI, and very large signage may use below 100 PPI. These are not universal specifications: the printer, process, content, and viewing distance control the decision.
Adobe notes that around 220 PPI can often be sufficient for high-quality inkjet photo printing, while also emphasizing that the output device and print conditions matter. Commercial press work may relate image resolution to halftone screen frequency, often around 1.5–2 times the screen ruling. Read Adobe’s printer-resolution guidance.
The best priority order is:
- Follow the print shop or printer’s specifications.
- If none are provided, start at 300 PPI for a detailed print viewed closely.
- Use a lower target when scale and viewing distance justify it.
- Judge the final file by effective PPI, not by embedded metadata alone.
Other factors that affect print clarity
Source sharpness
Focus, camera quality, scan quality, lighting, and the original painting’s texture all affect the result. A soft 300-PPI file remains soft.

Cropping and aspect ratio
A 4 × 6 image has a 2:3 ratio, while an 8 × 10 print has a 4:5 ratio. Moving between them may crop part of the artwork, add borders, or distort the image. Decide the final ratio before calculating pixels.
Bleed
If artwork extends to the edge, add the print provider’s required bleed before calculating. For example, a printer requiring 0.125 inch on every side would turn an 8 × 10-inch finished design into an 8.25 × 10.25-inch file. At 300 PPI, that is 2,475 × 3,075 pixels. The 0.125-inch value is only an example; use the printer’s specification.
Text, logos, and line art
Rasterized lettering and logos may look blurry even when a photograph looks acceptable. Keep type, logos, and geometric artwork as vector elements when possible, or supply a print-ready PDF. Adobe notes that vector graphics are resolution-independent and retain crisp edges when resized. Adobe’s overview of raster and vector graphics explains the distinction.

Paper, printer, and color
Paper surface, ink or toner, printer calibration, color profile, contrast, compression, and tonal range all influence the final print. A 300-PPI number alone cannot guarantee accurate color or sharp detail.

For websites and social platforms, pixel dimensions and display scaling matter more than an embedded 300-PPI tag. Changing metadata does not automatically make an online image sharper.
A practical checklist before sending artwork to print
- Confirm the finished width and height.
- Confirm the required PPI, file format, color profile, and bleed with the printer.
- Check the pixel dimensions after cropping.
- Calculate effective PPI using the final placed size.
- Check that the aspect ratio will not cause unwanted cropping or stretching.
- Inspect the image at 100% for blur, compression, and enlargement artifacts.
- Keep text and logos vector-based when the workflow allows.
- Remember that changing metadata alone does not create detail.
Tools for checking a 300-PPI file
You do not need paid software to calculate the required pixels. The multiplication can be done with a calculator, and many basic image editors show pixel dimensions and print size.
- Simple design work: Canva or Adobe Express can suit invitations, flyers, and template-based layouts.
- Professional image preparation: Photoshop provides Image Size, resampling, color, retouching, and print-preview controls. See Adobe’s official Photoshop plans page for current terms.
- Subscription alternative: Affinity Photo may suit users seeking a professional editor outside Adobe’s subscription model; verify current licensing and platform details before purchase.
Choose software for the workflow you actually need, not because the file contains a 300-PPI label.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 300 DPI the same as 300 PPI?
Not technically. PPI describes image pixels distributed across the printed inch; DPI describes printer dots. “300 DPI” is commonly used as shorthand for a 300-PPI image target.
Recommended Free Tools
How many pixels does a 4 × 6 photo need at 300 PPI?
It needs 1,200 × 1,800 pixels, assuming the image keeps the 2:3 aspect ratio.
How many pixels does an 8 × 10 print need at 300 PPI?
It needs 2,400 × 3,000 pixels.
Does a 300-PPI setting guarantee a sharp print?
No. Source focus, cropping, scaling, compression, paper, printer, color management, and viewing distance also affect clarity.
Is 300 PPI necessary for digital images?
Usually, no. For screens, pixel dimensions and display scaling generally matter more than the PPI metadata.
What should I do if my image lacks enough pixels?
Print it smaller, preserve more of the original image, ask the printer about its minimum effective PPI, or enlarge it while checking carefully for softness and artifacts.
