Google announced Imagen 4 on May 20, 2025, promoting it as a more capable text-to-image model for detailed, photorealistic images and clearer typography. The family included standard, Ultra, and Fast versions, with different quality, speed, and price trade-offs. As of August 18, 2026, Google’s Gemini API documentation says all three Imagen 4 API endpoints were scheduled to shut down on August 17, 2026; that notice applies to those API endpoints, not automatically to every Google app that may offer image generation.
What Google launched
Imagen 4 is Google’s family of text-to-image models: a user describes an image in text, and the model generates an image. Google announced it on May 20, 2025, alongside Veo 3 and Lyria 2. Google described standard Imagen 4 as a general-purpose option, Ultra as the higher-quality option, and Fast as the speed- and volume-oriented option. The launch positioning and initial availability are described in Google Cloud’s announcement and Google’s product announcement.
Imagen 4 is the image-generation model family, not another name for the Gemini app. Gemini, Whisk, Workspace, AI Studio, the Gemini API, and Vertex AI are different ways Google exposed or integrated image generation; their controls, eligibility, and billing need not match.
What changed from Imagen 3
Google’s launch material emphasized better overall image quality and prompt adherence, with clearer fine detail in features such as skin, fur, and intricate textures. It also highlighted photorealistic and abstract styles, multilingual prompts, multiple aspect ratios, and output resolutions up to 2K. These are Google’s descriptions of the model’s capabilities, not independent comparative test results or a guarantee that every interface produces a 2K image. Google’s I/O announcement roundup also described Imagen 4 Fast as up to 10 times faster than Imagen 3; that figure is a Google launch claim, not an independently measured result.

“Photorealistic” is best understood as a style the model can produce, not a promise that every output will look like a photograph. Results depend on the prompt, subject, composition, and the product surface used. Google called Imagen 4 its highest-quality image model at launch, but the available launch claims do not establish that it was objectively the most realistic generator on the market.
Text in generated images
Google specifically called out improved spelling and typography. That made Imagen 4 a plausible tool for exploring posters, greeting cards, comics, presentation illustrations, marketing concepts, and images with short labels or phrases. “Improved” does not mean dependable typesetting: long copy, tiny lettering, unusual fonts, dense layouts, and multilingual text can still come out wrong. For finished work, treat generated wording as a draft and check it carefully or add final type in a design or editing application.

These are historical listed prices, not a current offer or a promise of identical billing across products, regions, or configurations. The Gemini API and Vertex AI are separately documented services; check their live billing terms before relying on any price. Google announced the Imagen 4 family’s Gemini API and Google AI Studio availability on June 24, 2025, then announced Fast and general availability for the family on August 15, 2025.

Where Imagen 4 was available
Google initially cited access through consumer and creative products as well as its cloud and developer services. The exact model, feature set, account requirements, and rollout could vary by product, country, and plan.
- Consumer and creative products: Google cited Gemini and Whisk, as well as Workspace products including Slides, Vids, and Docs. A feature in one of these products does not establish that it used the same model version or offered the same limits as the API.
- Developer access: Google AI Studio and the Gemini API provided a route for experimentation and integration. The Gemini API was announced in paid preview on June 24, 2025, with limited free AI Studio testing, and was later made generally available. Limited testing should not be confused with ongoing free API use.
- Cloud deployment: Vertex AI offered a Google Cloud route for developers and businesses. Its quota, configuration, and billing are distinct from consumer access.
Google’s launch descriptions are available in the product announcement and Vertex AI announcement. The Gemini API’s original consumer or Workspace availability should not be treated as proof that Imagen 4 remains accessible there today.
API identifiers and documented limits
Google’s Gemini API model page lists these Imagen 4 identifiers: imagen-4.0-generate-001, imagen-4.0-ultra-generate-001, and imagen-4.0-fast-generate-001. It lists text input with a 480-token limit and output of one to four images, varying by model. Those identifiers and limits are useful when interpreting older examples, but the same documentation carries the shutdown notice described below. Generation capabilities and editing limits
Vertex AI’s Imagen 4 documentation describes text-to-image generation, digital watermarking and verification, configurable safety settings, a prompt rewriter, person generation, and quota options that depend on endpoint and configuration. Those features are documented for the Vertex AI context and should not be assumed to appear identically in Gemini or Workspace.

Imagen 4 was primarily a generation model, not a full image-editing suite. Vertex AI’s documentation lists the standard generation model as not supporting these advanced customization and editing functions:
- Few-shot image customization; product, person, or pet subject customization; style customization; and controlled customization.
- Instruct customization or style transfer.
- Mask-based or mask-free editing, including object insertion and removal.
For a workflow that depends on changing a particular existing image, removing an object, or maintaining an exact subject across a series, plan on a separate editing tool or another suitable model. The feature details are in Vertex AI’s Imagen 4 documentation.

What the August 2026 API shutdown means
Status update — August 18, 2026: Google’s Gemini API model documentation says the standard, Ultra, and Fast Imagen 4 endpoints were scheduled to shut down on August 17, 2026. That date has passed. Developers should not start a new integration using the old identifiers without first confirming their status in Google’s live documentation. Existing code may fail if it relies on an endpoint that has been shut down.
Google’s surfaced official documentation is inconsistent about the successor: the Imagen model page points to Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, while the Gemini API pricing page points to Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. Do not assume these names are interchangeable or change production code based on one page alone. Verify the current migration instructions, model identifier, request format, pricing, quotas, and output behavior in the live Imagen documentation and Gemini API pricing documentation before migrating.

This shutdown notice concerns the listed Gemini API endpoints. It does not by itself establish whether every consumer-facing Google product or Workspace feature has stopped using Imagen 4, so check the specific product’s current documentation or interface rather than extrapolating from the API notice.

Who Imagen 4 suited—and where caution mattered
At launch, the family made most sense for creators who wanted to generate and compare visual concepts quickly: mood boards, scene concepts, advertising mockups, social graphics, presentation illustrations, or short-text poster ideas. Fast was oriented toward rapid drafts and volume; Ultra toward higher-quality generations where the extra per-image cost was acceptable. For production use, however, the API shutdown changes the decision: Imagen 4’s historical capabilities do not make its retired identifiers a suitable assumed foundation for a new integration.
It was a less direct fit for precise typesetting, exact logos or trademarks, pixel-perfect product photography, consistent character identity across many outputs, or detailed edits to an existing image. Safety settings and person-generation controls were documented, but their precise availability and enforcement could differ by Google product. Generated work should not be presumed free of copyright, trademark, likeness, or contractual concerns.
Readers considering another tool should match it to the workflow rather than assume one is universally superior. Adobe Firefly may suit designers already working in Creative Cloud who value its editing integrations and Adobe’s commercial-safety positioning; Adobe announced Firefly Image Model 4 and Image Model 4 Ultra in April 2025. Midjourney may appeal to visual creators seeking a dedicated image-generation environment. Developers needing Google infrastructure should first verify the currently supported Google image model and migration path.
