The Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra is the best first resin printer for most beginners. Its leveling-free setup, tilt-vat release system, compact footprint, and fine detail reduce some of the most frustrating early failures. If price matters more than convenience, choose the Anycubic Photon Mono 4. Choose the Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra 16K for a larger build area, the Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro for speed and capacity, or the Phrozen Sonic Mini 8K S for detail-focused miniature work.

Resin printing is capable of exceptionally smooth, detailed models, but it is not a cleaner or easier alternative to FDM printing. Every resin printer requires liquid-resin handling, ventilation, washing, curing, support removal, and waste management.

Best resin printers for beginners at a glance

Printer Best for Key strengths Main drawback
Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra Most beginners Leveling-free setup, tilt-vat release, fine detail, camera and resin detection Small build area
Anycubic Photon Mono 4 Budget buyers 10K screen, 17 × 17 µm XY resolution, compact size Four-point leveling and no tilt-vat system

Why it is beginner-friendly

  • The leveling-free or automatic-leveling design reduces the most intimidating part of initial setup.
  • The tilt-vat mechanism is designed to reduce peel force as cured layers separate from the release film.
  • Its compact format suits miniatures, small figures, tabletop parts, and detailed models.
  • The camera and resin-level detection provide useful monitoring features for new users.
  • The approximately 18-micron XY resolution is more informative than simply calling it a “9K” printer.

Limitations

The Mars 5 Ultra is not a large-format machine. Buyers printing large figures or several big models at once should look at the Saturn 4 Ultra 16K or Photon Mono M7 Pro instead. It also does not remove the need for supports, exposure calibration, washing, curing, ventilation, or safe waste disposal.

Automated setup does not guarantee perfect removal. Tom’s Hardware reported difficulty removing a print from the build plate during testing, a useful reminder that plate adhesion and removal can still require care.

Buy it if: you want the least frustrating introduction to resin printing and mostly make small, detailed models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you already know you need a large build area or high-volume production.

2. Anycubic Photon Mono 4: best budget resin printer

The Anycubic Photon Mono 4 is the strongest low-commitment entry point. Anycubic’s product page lists a 153.4 × 87 × 165 mm build volume, 17 × 17 µm XY resolution, a 10K screen, a seven-inch display, and maximum speeds of 50 mm/h with standard resin or up to 70 mm/h with high-speed resin. Its listed leveling system is four-point leveling.

Anycubic’s global store displayed the printer at $240 on August 18, 2026, with $252 shown as the comparison price. Treat that as a dated, region-specific store price rather than a permanent MSRP. Check the official Photon Mono 4 page for the current price, bundle, plug type, warranty, shipping, and tax.

Why it is a good first purchase

  • The compact build volume is appropriate for miniatures, jewelry prototypes, small figures, and tabletop parts.
  • The 17 × 17 µm XY pixel size is a strong specification for a budget detail printer.
  • It costs less than larger-format machines and consumes less resin per failed print.
  • Anycubic offers printer-plus-wash-and-cure bundle options.
  • Replacement films, build plates, cleaning supplies, and other accessories are available through the manufacturer’s store.

What you give up

The Photon Mono 4 requires more hands-on setup than the Mars 5 Ultra. Its four-point leveling system is manageable, but it is less convenient for a nervous first-time buyer. It also lacks the Mars 5 Ultra’s tilt-vat release system.

3. Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra 16K: best larger-format upgrade

The Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra 16K is the right choice for a beginner who already knows that a Mars-sized printer will be too small. Current comparison coverage positions it as a larger-format, high-resolution machine with auto-leveling, tilt-vat functionality, smart heating, and an AI camera. TechRadar’s coverage also reports strong results for detailed models and miniatures. See TechRadar’s dated promotion coverage and the 3DPrinting.com comparison.

Best uses

  • Printing several miniatures or parts in one batch.
  • Making larger figures that will not fit comfortably on a compact printer.
  • Reducing the number of separate assemblies needed for a project.
  • Buying into a larger platform instead of upgrading soon after learning the basics.

TechRadar reported an observed promotional price of $439 on August 13, 2026. That is a time-limited sale reference, not a stable retail price.

Important trade-offs

A larger vat uses more resin, costs more to fill, takes more space, and creates more cleanup when a print fails. The machine is therefore unnecessary for someone making only small tabletop miniatures. High resolution also does not compensate for weak supports, incorrect exposure, poor orientation, or a cold workspace.

Buy it if: you already know you need more room or want to print multiple models at once.

Skip it if: your projects fit on a compact printer and you want the least expensive, least demanding setup.

4. Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro: best for speed and repeat printing

The Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro is an upgrade pick for users who expect to print frequently. Anycubic lists a 223 × 126 × 230 mm build volume, 16.8 × 24.8 µm XY resolution, and a maximum speed of 170 mm/h. The manufacturer’s store displayed a price of $562 on August 18, 2026, with $769 shown as the comparison price.

Buy it if: you print often and value capacity more than minimum purchase price.

Skip it if: you are still unsure whether resin printing fits your hobby or workspace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Phrozen Sonic Mini 8K S: best detail-focused miniature option

The Phrozen Sonic Mini 8K S belongs on this list for buyers whose priority is fine detail in tabletop miniatures and small models. Current comparison coverage places it among detail-focused consumer resin printers with miniature-oriented positioning. Its appeal is strongest for users willing to learn slicer settings and support design rather than those seeking the most automated first-print experience.

Before purchasing, verify the current Phrozen product page, regional price, resin profiles, warranty terms, replacement-film availability, and local after-sales support.

Best fit and limitations

It is a good fit for small, intricate models and experienced FDM users moving to resin. However, “8K” alone does not prove that it will produce better real-world results than newer 9K, 10K, 12K, or 16K machines. Exposure, optics, resin, orientation, supports, and post-processing all affect the finished surface.

Buy it if: miniature detail matters more than automated convenience and you are comfortable learning.

What to know before buying a resin printer

Resin versus FDM printing

Resin printers use UV-curable liquid resin, typically exposed through an MSLA/LCD system. They are particularly good at fine detail, smooth surfaces, miniatures, figurines, jewelry patterns, and small intricate parts. Formlabs explains the resolution, accuracy, and surface-finish advantages of resin printing, while also noting that lower-cost hobby machines trade away some reliability, material options, and workflow convenience.

Compared with FDM, resin printing generally offers finer detail but a smaller build area and a more involved cleanup process. The finished part must be washed and UV-cured. Supports leave marks, failed prints can contaminate the vat, and liquid resin requires careful handling.

Resolution is not the same as print quality

A printer’s “K” rating describes the pixel count of its LCD, but it is not a complete quality metric. Consider:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • XY resolution: lateral pixel size and the smallest detail the exposure system can define.
  • Layer height: vertical resolution and visible stepping on sloped surfaces.
  • Exposure: too little can cause weak layers; too much can blur fine features.
  • Supports and orientation: these determine whether delicate areas print successfully and where marks appear.
  • Resin and temperature: material behavior changes with formulation and workspace conditions.
  • Post-processing: washing, support removal, drying, and curing affect the final appearance.

How much build volume do you need?

Compact printers such as the Mars 5 Ultra and Photon Mono 4 are suited to miniatures, small figures, jewelry prototypes, and tabletop components. The Photon Mono 4’s listed volume is 153.4 × 87 × 165 mm; the Mars 5 Ultra is in a similar compact class. The Photon Mono M7 Pro is substantially larger at 223 × 126 × 230 mm.

Measure your intended models before buying. Larger volume is useful for batch printing and big figures, but it also increases cost, resin consumption, workspace requirements, and the consequences of a failed print.

Why leveling matters

Leveling establishes the relationship between the build plate and the vat’s release film. Traditional manual leveling involves loosening screws, lowering the plate onto a leveling surface, applying pressure, and retightening the screws. Automatic or leveling-free systems reduce or eliminate that initial procedure.

Anycubic lists four-point leveling for the Photon Mono 4. The Mars 5 Ultra is recommended for buyers anxious about leveling, but “leveling-free” does not mean maintenance-free. You still need to check the plate, fasteners, release film, exposure settings, and supports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a tilt-vat mechanism helps

A tilt-vat system changes how each cured layer separates from the release film. By targeting peel force, it can reduce one common failure mode: a model remaining attached to the vat instead of the build plate. It is a design advantage, not a guarantee. Poor supports, incorrect exposure, contamination, or an unsuitable resin can still cause failures.

Workspace and resin safety

Safety should determine whether you buy a resin printer at all. Do not treat liquid resin as ordinary craft paint. Read the resin manufacturer’s safety data sheet, use appropriate gloves and eye protection, and keep children and pets away from the printer and post-processing area.

  • Use a ventilated, non-food workspace.
  • Keep resin and contaminated tools away from kitchens and food-preparation areas.
  • Do not pour uncured resin or contaminated solvent down a drain.
  • Follow the resin manufacturer’s instructions and local rules for curing and disposing of contaminated waste.
  • Do not assume an enclosure or activated-carbon filter makes an unventilated room safe.
  • Keep the bottle closed whenever resin is not being poured.

Anycubic offers an optional activated-carbon purifier for the Photon Mono 4, but the purifier is an accessory, not a substitute for suitable ventilation. A bedroom, kitchen, child’s room, or poorly ventilated office is a poor location for resin printing.

What you need besides the printer

A printer alone is not a complete resin-printing setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Essential equipment

  • UV resin.
  • Nitrile gloves and eye protection.
  • Paper towels or disposable wipes.
  • A silicone mat, spill tray, or other non-porous work surface.
  • A wash container or wash-and-cure station.
  • A UV curing method.
  • A manufacturer-approved removal tool or scraper.
  • A fine mesh filter and resin-filtering funnel.
  • Containers for contaminated waste.
  • A ventilated workspace.

Strongly recommended

  • Wash-and-cure machine.
  • Spare FEP, ACF, or NFEP film.
  • Screen protector.
  • Spare build plate or vat where available.
  • Infrared thermometer or another way to monitor workspace temperature.
  • Dedicated tools that never return to food or household use.

Anycubic’s store lists wash-and-cure machines, resin, release films, build plates, cleaning kits, and air-purifier accessories. See its wash-and-cure collection and accessories collection.

A practical first-print checklist

Before printing

  1. Choose a ventilated, non-food workspace.
  2. Read the printer manual and resin SDS.
  3. Install the recommended slicer and confirm the exact printer profile.
  4. Inspect the vat, build plate, screen, and protective films.
  5. Prepare gloves, eye protection, wipes, washing equipment, and a curing method.
  6. Level the plate if the printer requires it.
  7. Pour only enough resin for the planned print.

When slicing

  1. Import a supported STL or 3MF file.
  2. Select the exact printer and resin profiles.
  3. Orient the model to reduce large cross-sections and suction risk.
  4. Add supports to islands and vulnerable overhangs.
  5. Hollow large models only when appropriate, adding drain holes.
  6. Inspect the layer preview for unsupported islands.
  7. Export the file in the printer’s supported format and transfer it using the approved method.

For the first print

Use a manufacturer-supplied test file or a small, low-resin model. Standard resin is usually a sensible starting point. Avoid a first print that fills most of the vat or requires complex hollowing and delicate supports.

After printing

  1. Put on gloves before touching the uncured print.
  2. Remove it carefully using the manufacturer’s recommended method.
  3. Wash it according to the resin instructions.
  4. Remove supports at the recommended stage.
  5. Allow the part to dry, then UV-cure it as directed.
  6. Filter and store uncontaminated unused resin.
  7. Inspect the vat film before starting another print.
  8. Cure contaminated disposable waste before disposal where the resin instructions and local rules permit.

Common failures and how to recover

The print is stuck to the vat film

Possible causes include weak first-layer exposure, incorrect plate setup, inadequate supports, a large cross-section, worn release film, cold resin, or poorly mixed resin. Stop the print, remove cured debris, filter the resin if necessary, inspect the film, and recheck the plate, exposure, orientation, and supports.

The print is stuck to the build plate

Excessive bottom exposure, a contaminated or overly rough plate, an over-adhering raft, or an unsuitable removal angle can make a print difficult to remove. Use the manufacturer’s removal method and avoid levering against the vat or LCD. Reduce bottom exposure only after confirming that the plate is correctly prepared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Layers are separating

Delamination can result from incorrect normal exposure, low temperature, excessive lift speed, weak supports, or inconsistent resin mixing. Mix the resin, begin with the manufacturer’s profile, run an exposure test, and adjust exposure or lift settings cautiously.

A hollow model fails like a suction cup

A hollow model without suitable drain holes can trap resin and create suction forces. Hollow the model correctly, add drain holes where the cavity can drain and be washed, and do not hollow every model automatically. Small parts may be better printed solid.

The vat or screen is contaminated

Failed fragments and improper scraping can damage the release film or LCD. Stop printing, filter the resin, inspect the film and screen protector, and replace damaged film before restarting. Do not press hard against the LCD.

How to choose between the five

  • Choose the Mars 5 Ultra if you want the easiest overall first experience.
  • Choose the Photon Mono 4 if price and footprint matter most.
  • Choose the Saturn 4 Ultra 16K if you already need a larger build area or batch capacity.
  • Choose the Photon Mono M7 Pro if speed, volume, and future growth justify the higher cost.
  • Choose the Sonic Mini 8K S if miniature detail is the priority and you are willing to learn more about profiles and supports.

Premium alternative: Formlabs

Formlabs is a credible premium alternative for buyers who prioritize a managed ecosystem, professional support, materials, and workflow controls. However, it is not a direct budget competitor: Formlabs lists the Form 3+ from $2,499 and the Form 3L from $4,999. For hobbyists and budget-conscious first-time buyers, the Mars, Photon, Saturn, and Phrozen machines are the relevant category.
