Hands-on: Windows 11 Paint’s Generative Erase removes objects—but selection matters

Windows 11 Paint’s Generative Erase can quickly remove objects, but availability and results vary. Here’s how it works, how to use it, and when Photos or a professional editor is better.

Microsoft Paint’s Generative Erase can remove an unwanted object and synthesize a plausible replacement for the background. It is useful for quick cleanup of screenshots, illustrations, and uncomplicated photos, but it is not a conventional eraser and cannot recover pixels that were never captured. Results depend heavily on the selection, and current availability varies by Paint version, Windows build, hardware, region, and rollout status.

Microsoft originally announced Generative Erase for Windows Insiders on November 6, 2024, saying it was available on all Windows 11 PCs. Current Microsoft documentation increasingly associates Paint’s local image-transformation features with Copilot+ PCs, so verify the feature on your own installation rather than relying on the original availability claim.

What Generative Erase actually does

A normal eraser exposes transparency or replaces pixels with a color. Paint’s Generative Erase instead removes the selected area and generates an approximation of what might plausibly have been behind it. Microsoft describes it as removing unwanted objects and filling the resulting empty space.

That distinction matters. The tool does not restore the true hidden background. It guesses from surrounding visual information, which can produce convincing pavement, sky, walls, or grass but may invent or distort text, faces, wires, reflections, and repeating patterns.

Microsoft announced the feature in Paint version 11.2410.28.0. A later Insider rollout moved Paint AI features into a Copilot menu in version 11.2412.271.0 and higher. The interface may have changed since those announcements. See Microsoft’s original Generative Erase announcement and its later Copilot-menu announcement for the historical rollout details.

Availability in 2026: check the exact PC

There is no responsible single answer to “does every Windows 11 PC have Generative Erase?” Microsoft’s 2024 statement said all Windows 11 PCs, but newer support material focuses on Copilot+ Paint features and local AI components.

Microsoft’s April 2026 documentation describes its Image Transform component as enabling object erasure and generated background filling on Copilot+ PCs running Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. It lists Image Transform version 1.2604.515.0. This does not prove that every historical Generative Erase implementation has identical hardware requirements, so treat the feature as installation- and rollout-dependent.

Before troubleshooting, record:

  • Windows edition and version, such as 24H2, 25H2, or 26H1.
  • OS build number.
  • Paint version, available from Paint’s settings or the Microsoft Store.
  • Processor and whether the computer is a Copilot+ PC with supported AI hardware.
  • Region and whether Paint is a production or Windows Insider build.
  • Whether Paint is signed in with a Microsoft account and connected to the internet.

Install the latest Paint version from the Microsoft Store and apply pending Windows updates before concluding that the feature is unavailable. Microsoft’s current Paint Copilot+ support page is the best reference for current documented requirements.

How to use Generative Erase

The original workflow is:

  1. Open the image in Paint.
  2. Choose the Eraser tool, or use the current Copilot or selection-based entry point if your build presents the feature there.
  3. Choose Generative erase.
  4. Brush over the unwanted object.
  5. Use Add area to erase to include missing parts, attached pieces, or a shadow.
  6. Use Reduce area to erase to remove an accidental part of the mask.
  7. Select Apply.

You can also select an area with the Rectangle or Free-form selection tool, then choose Generative Erase from the contextual or right-click menu where supported.

Save a copy before experimenting. Generative Erase is a destructive canvas edit rather than a professional layer-and-mask workflow, so keeping the original file gives you a clean recovery point.

Select the object, not just its center

The mask is often the difference between a useful result and an obvious failure. Include the complete unwanted object, including:

  • Cast and contact shadows.
  • Reflections that clearly belong to the object.
  • Handles, cables, wires, branches, or detached pieces.
  • Small parts extending beyond the object’s main body.

At the same time, avoid selecting large amounts of background that should remain. Use a brush or free-form selection for irregular shapes. Use a smaller brush and several passes for blemishes or thin details. When an object touches a face, person, hair, text, architectural edge, or repeating pattern, make smaller selections and inspect each result before continuing.

For a shadow, try two versions: select the object and shadow together, then undo and test the object and shadow separately. A large mask may remove the shadow cleanly but damage nearby texture; a separate pass may preserve more detail.

What kinds of images suit it?

Generative Erase is most promising when the surrounding background is visually simple or predictable: a plain wall, open sky, pavement, or a broad area of grass. More difficult cases include brick and tile, fences, window frames, text, logos, hair, cables, faces, reflections, and large foreground objects.

Inspect the result for:

  • Broken straight lines and perspective.
  • Repeated or smeared textures.
  • Halos around the former object.
  • Invented letters, logos, faces, limbs, or architectural details.
  • Shadows that remain after the object disappears.
  • Damage spreading into nearby details after repeated attempts.

Do not judge the tool from one successful flat-background example. A realistic evaluation should include simple backgrounds, textured surfaces, repeating geometry, a person overlap, fine wires, shadows or reflections, text, multiple objects, an edge-boundary object, and a large removal. Microsoft does not publish a universal success rate, and results will vary with image resolution, compression, object size, and mask quality.

Local AI does not mean completely offline

Microsoft says supported Copilot+ Paint image-generation features use the device’s NPU for local image generation. Its Image Transform documentation likewise describes object erasure and background filling as on-device processing on Copilot+ PCs.

However, Microsoft also says a Microsoft account and internet connection are required for cloud services used for safety filtering. The company says Azure safety services filter content and that input and generated images are not stored for the documented Paint Copilot+ workflow. That should not be generalized to every Paint build or every Microsoft image service. “Processed locally” does not necessarily mean no account, no connectivity, or no service communication.

Whether Generative Erase itself prompts for sign-in, works offline after setup, accepts a local Windows account, or supports a work or school account can vary by implementation. Test those conditions on the exact PC rather than assuming that the requirements for Generative Fill or Cocreator are identical.

Recovering from a bad result

  1. Use Undo immediately after an unsuccessful application.
  2. Reduce the mask and retry rather than repeatedly erasing a large area.
  3. Remove a large object in several smaller passes.
  4. Test the shadow separately from the object.
  5. Try a rectangular selection when a brush mask leaves an irregular boundary.
  6. Reopen the saved copy if multiple edits have damaged the surrounding detail.

If the command is missing, update Paint through the Microsoft Store, install pending Windows updates, confirm that the image is actually open in Paint, and check Copilot+ hardware and regional availability. Try a small, non-sensitive local image to distinguish an account or service problem from an image-specific failure.

Paint versus Photos

Windows Photos has its own Generative Erase workflow and may be the better starting point for photographs. In Photos, open an image, choose Erase, adjust the brush size, and decide whether Auto apply is enabled. With Auto apply disabled, Photos provides Add mask, Remove mask, Clear, and Erase controls.

Photos is therefore more purpose-built for photographic retouching, while Paint remains convenient for screenshots, illustrations, annotations, and images already being edited on a Paint canvas. Microsoft documents Photos’ process as local on the device, but its controls and availability should not be assumed to be identical to Paint’s. Read Microsoft’s Photos editing documentation for the current workflow.

Paint versus Designer and professional editors

Tool Best fit Main trade-off
Paint Fast cleanup of simple images, screenshots, and artwork Limited control over the generated replacement
Photos Windows-native photo retouching with explicit mask controls Still an AI approximation, not guaranteed restoration
Designer Broader cloud-based generative editing and design Requires an internet connection and Microsoft account
Photoshop or similar Publication-ready work, layers, masks, clone/heal tools, and precise retouching More complexity and possible subscription cost
GIMP Free, open-source desktop editing and manual retouching No equivalent integrated one-click generative workflow

Microsoft Designer is cloud-based and adds Content Credentials to AI-edited images where supported. It is a stronger choice for broader design work, but less suitable for users who need a local workflow for sensitive images. Professional editors remain preferable when geometry, hair, reflections, text, or publication-quality accuracy matter.

On supported Copilot+ PCs, Click to Do can send an image to Photos for object erasure or Paint for background removal. It is an entry point rather than necessarily a separate erasing engine. Microsoft documents regional restrictions, including current limitations on some advanced image actions in the European Economic Area.

Should you buy a Copilot+ PC for this?

Not for Generative Erase alone. If Paint already exposes the feature on your Windows 11 computer, occasional object removal does not justify new hardware. A Copilot+ PC becomes more compelling when you also value its broader AI features, battery life, performance, display, and portability.

Microsoft has described some Paint AI features as free without a subscription, but that is different from requiring no hardware investment. Check the official Copilot+ PC information before buying, and verify that the particular Paint feature you want is supported on the model and region you are considering.

Verdict

Generative Erase is a convenient first attempt at removing unwanted objects in Windows 11 Paint. It is most useful for small objects against uncomplicated backgrounds and for users who want a quick result without installing a dedicated editor. Select the whole object carefully, include or separately test its shadow, and expect plausible invention rather than exact recovery.

For photographs, Photos may provide the clearer Windows-native workflow. For complex or publication-ready retouching, use an editor with layers, masks, clone/heal tools, and manual control. Because Microsoft’s original “all Windows 11 PCs” statement predates today’s Copilot+ and Image Transform documentation, confirm support on the exact Paint build and PC before treating Generative Erase as a buying requirement.
