GIMP 3.1.4 is an important technology preview, not the version most people should use for production. Released on September 1, 2025, it introduced early implementations of link layers and vector layers—two features that move GIMP toward more flexible, non-destructive workflows familiar to Photoshop users.
The practical recommendation is straightforward: test 3.1.4 if you want to evaluate GIMP’s future or help find bugs, but use the stable GIMP 3.2 line for general work. The newer release carried these ideas forward as shipped features, while 3.1.4 itself was explicitly a development build that could crash and expose unfinished behavior.
What GIMP 3.1.4 actually is
GIMP 3.1.4 was the project’s second development release on the road to GIMP 3.2. The release was announced on September 1, 2025, with the main goal of letting testers and adventurous early adopters try two planned layer types before the stable release.

Those layer types are:
- Link layers, which keep an external image file connected to a GIMP project.
- Vector layers, which keep path-based shapes editable instead of treating them as ordinary pixels immediately.
That distinction matters. GIMP 3.1.4 was not a routine stable upgrade, and the GIMP project warned that development versions could contain crashes, bugs and user-interface problems. It was intended for testing, development and feedback—not as the default application for client work or irreplaceable projects.
For readers arriving at this story later, the important version context is that GIMP’s GIMP 3.2 release notes describe link and vector layers as shipped features. In other words, 3.1.4 is best understood as the preview that introduced the capabilities, not the stable endpoint.
Why link and vector layers matter
GIMP has long been capable of powerful raster editing, compositing, painting and retouching. It also had paths and text layers. But paths were not the same thing as an integrated vector layer model, and an external logo or illustration generally had to be imported as pixels before it became part of a composition.
Link and vector layers address two different parts of that limitation:

| Workflow need | GIMP’s direction in 3.1.4 |
|---|---|
| Reuse an external logo or illustration | Place it as a link layer |
| Update an asset without rebuilding a composition | Keep the source file external and connected |
| Transform an imported graphic repeatedly | Transform the linked content without changing the original source |
| Keep simple shapes editable | Create a vector layer from a path |
| Change shape geometry after placement | Edit the underlying path |
| Perform pixel-level edits | Rasterize the content when necessary |
These features make GIMP more credible for projects that combine photos with logos, icons, illustrations or other reusable artwork. They do not make it a complete replacement for every Photoshop, Illustrator or Inkscape workflow.
Link layers: an external asset that can update
A link layer places an external image file into a GIMP project without embedding it as an ordinary raster layer. The project retains a reference to the source file, allowing the linked content to be updated when the source changes.
GIMP’s release example uses an SVG edited in Inkscape. You can maintain the artwork in Inkscape, use it in a GIMP composition, and then update the external SVG without recreating the composition from scratch.
The idea is similar in concept to Photoshop’s Linked Smart Objects. That comparison is useful for understanding the workflow, but it should not be read as a claim of complete feature parity. GIMP’s implementation was early in 3.1.4, and the two applications do not provide identical object, filter, adjustment or compatibility systems.

How to create a link layer
- Open a project in GIMP.
- Choose File → Open as Link Layer….
- Select an external image file, such as an SVG.
- Transform or filter the linked layer in GIMP without altering the original source asset.
- Edit and save the source file in an external application such as Inkscape.
- Return to GIMP and check that the linked content updates.
To replace the source, double-click the layer icon or use Edit Layer Attributes. If you need a conventional raster layer, right-click the linked layer and choose Discard Link Information.
What link layers do not do
The 3.1.4 implementation used the full linked image. It did not yet provide selective linking of individual layers from an external XCF file; that was described as a planned improvement.
Linking also creates a file-management responsibility. If the source asset is moved, renamed or deleted, GIMP may no longer be able to find it. Keep external artwork in a predictable project folder, avoid casually changing paths, and archive the linked assets alongside the XCF file when sharing a project.
“Non-destructive” also needs a precise interpretation here. The original external file remains separate, and transformations applied to the linked content do not modify that source. That does not mean every operation in the workflow remains editable indefinitely, nor does it guarantee the same behavior as Photoshop Smart Objects.

Vector layers: editable shapes inside a raster editor
Vector layers let you create a shape from a path, assign fill and stroke settings, and continue editing the path after the layer has been created. Because the geometry remains path-based, scaling and rotating the shape avoids the softening normally associated with repeatedly enlarging a rasterized image.
You can change the shape’s path, alter its colors and stroke, transform it, and rasterize it later when pixel-level painting or retouching is required.
How to create a vector layer
- Select the Path tool.
- Draw a new path or edit an existing one.
- Click Create vector layer.
- Select the new vector layer.
- Adjust its fill and stroke through the Path tool or by double-clicking the layer thumbnail.
- Modify the path to update the vector layer.
- Use GIMP’s transformation tools to scale, rotate or reshape it.
When you need a pixel-based version, right-click the layer and choose Discard Vector Information. That converts the vector content to a raster layer suitable for ordinary pixel editing.
GIMP’s later 3.2 documentation describes the same core model: path-based shapes with editable fill, stroke and non-destructive transformations. The feature is valuable for simple graphic elements, but it does not turn GIMP into a full desktop-publishing or illustration application.

Users creating advanced logos, illustrations, typography or SVG artwork may still prefer a dedicated vector application such as Inkscape. GIMP’s own link-layer example makes that relationship clear: Inkscape can remain the place where vector artwork is authored, while GIMP handles raster compositing and image editing.
A practical SVG workflow
For a designer combining photography with vector artwork, the intended workflow looks like this:
- Create or revise a logo, icon or illustration in Inkscape and save it as an SVG.
- Open the photographic composition in GIMP.
- Use File → Open as Link Layer… to add the SVG.
- Scale, rotate and position the linked artwork in the composition.
- Save the GIMP project and keep the SVG in the project’s asset folder.
- When the artwork changes, edit and save the SVG externally.
- Check the GIMP project and refresh or reopen it if the change is not immediately visible.
This is most useful when the same logo or illustration appears in multiple compositions. It is less important for a one-off image that will never change outside GIMP.
GIMP 3.1.4 versus Photoshop
| Capability | GIMP 3.1.4 | Photoshop comparison |
|---|---|---|
| External linked assets | Yes, through link layers | Similar in concept to Linked Smart Objects |
| Editable path-backed shapes | Yes, through vector layers | Photoshop provides its own shape and vector workflows |
| Raster editing | Strong foundation for compositing, painting and retouching | Strong, with a broader commercial ecosystem |
| Full feature parity | No claim should be made | Remains broader in some professional workflows |
| License model | Free and open-source | Commercial Adobe software |
| Production stability | Development snapshot | Depends on the current Photoshop release |
Calling GIMP “the best free Photoshop alternative” is a judgment, not an objective specification. GIMP is particularly compelling when the priorities are zero software cost, local desktop editing, extensibility and a strong raster workflow. It is less compelling when a team depends on precise PSD round-tripping, Adobe cloud workflows, proprietary plugins or highly specialized Photoshop features.
Do not assume that a Photoshop document will round-trip perfectly through GIMP. Test representative PSD files, layer effects, masks, text, adjustment layers and plugins before changing a production workflow.
What else changed in 3.1.4?
The new layer types were the headline, but the development cycle also included work across GIMP’s filter browser, MyPaint Brushes 2, the text tool, user-interface behavior, plug-ins, file formats and internal APIs.
The release announcement listed additional plug-ins and format-related work involving HRZ, JPEG 2000, PAA textures, Seattle Filmworks and TIFF. It also mentioned build and plug-in improvements, official nightly Snap and aarch64 Flatpak work for Linux, and initial public API functions for vector layers:
gimp-vector-layer-newgimp-vector-layer-refreshgimp-vector-layer-discard
According to the GIMP project, the development cycle from 3.1.2 to 3.1.4 included 79 fixed reports, 73 merged requests and 687 commits. Those figures indicate the scale of the development effort, not an independent performance benchmark.

The 3.1.4 announcement listed official packages for Linux, Windows and macOS, including:
- Linux AppImage, Flatpak and Snap packages for x86 and ARM 64-bit systems.
- Windows installers for x86 and ARM 64-bit systems.
- Microsoft Store packages.
- macOS DMG packages for Intel and Apple silicon, subject to availability at release time.
Use GIMP’s official downloads page or the project’s official package directories rather than a random mirror. The official Windows 3.1 download directory lists gimp-3.1.4-setup.exe at approximately 296 MB, alongside SHA-256 and SHA-512 checksum files.
Before installing a development build:
- Back up important XCF files.
- Work on copies of production projects.
- Keep your stable GIMP installation available separately where your operating system and packaging method permit it.
- Check whether every essential plugin or script supports GIMP 3.x.
- Do not overwrite a stable project environment until the new workflow has been tested.
Known risks and recovery steps
The linked asset was moved or renamed
GIMP may lose the external source when its path changes. Confirm the file’s location, restore the expected path if possible, or use the layer-attribute controls to replace or repair the source reference. For shared projects, preserve the XCF file and its linked assets in a project-level archive.
The source changed but GIMP did not update
First confirm that the external editor saved over the expected file. Then verify the path recorded by the layer, save the source again, and reopen or refresh the GIMP project if necessary. Test with a simple SVG to separate a project-specific problem from a broader workflow issue.
File monitoring also depends on the operating system and the build. During the later GIMP 3.2 release-candidate period, the project documented a Windows-specific link-layer monitoring problem related to a GLib bug and added a temporary workaround. That issue should not be generalized to every platform, but it is a useful reminder that the workflow was still maturing.
If linked assets are important to your work, test the stable GIMP 3.2 line and report reproducible failures through GIMP’s official issue-reporting channels.
SVG appearance changed after import
SVGs can render differently between applications. Potential causes include unsupported effects, embedded fonts, filters, external references, complex clipping or masking, and color-management differences. Convert or simplify the artwork only when necessary, and keep the original SVG so you can revise it in the authoring application.

You need to paint directly on a non-destructive layer
GIMP’s later workflow uses a Rasterize state for non-destructive layers. Rasterizing allows destructive pixel edits; under the documented workflow, Revert Rasterize can return the layer to its earlier non-destructive form. Treat rasterization as a deliberate change in editing mode rather than assuming every operation remains vector- or link-aware.
A plugin stops working
Do not assume a GIMP 2.10 plugin will work unchanged in GIMP 3.x. Check the plugin’s support status, test it with copies of your projects, and retain a stable installation for older or plugin-dependent work.
Free alternatives and complementary tools
GIMP is free and open-source, but the best choice depends on the kind of work you do:
- GIMP + Inkscape: a strong no-subscription combination for raster editing plus SVG and vector creation.
- Photoshop: the more established choice for users who need Adobe compatibility, mature linked-object workflows and the wider Creative Cloud ecosystem.
- Affinity Photo: a commercial, non-subscription alternative for users who want a polished raster editor without adopting Adobe’s ecosystem.
- Pixelmator Pro: a Mac-focused option for users who prioritize native Apple integration.
Current prices, licensing terms and plan availability change over time, so check each vendor’s official product page before making a purchase decision. GIMP itself can be downloaded from gimp.org, while Inkscape is available from inkscape.org.
The verdict
GIMP 3.1.4 is significant because it attacks a real workflow gap rather than merely adding another filter or brush. Link layers make externally maintained graphics more practical, and vector layers give simple path-based shapes a more useful place inside a raster composition.
That makes GIMP more credible as a free Photoshop alternative for photographers, painters and designers who combine raster work with reusable SVG assets. It does not make GIMP a complete Photoshop replacement, and it does not replace a dedicated vector application.
Try 3.1.4 if you want to test the future; use the stable GIMP 3.2 line if you want these capabilities for dependable everyday work.
