Andrew Sink’s STL to ASCII Generator turns a 3D-printable STL mesh into a character-based image. You can orbit the model, adjust its lighting and shading characters, switch presentation styles, and export the result as a PNG or raw text.
Despite the name, this is not mainly a converter to the ASCII STL file format. It creates ASCII art that depicts a 3D object from a chosen camera view. The geometry remains 3D inside the browser; the visible result is a 2D field of characters.
What the STL-to-ASCII tool does
The browser project is attributed to Andrew Sink and was reported by Hackaday on January 22, 2022. The creator later linked to the hosted version at andrewsink.github.io/STL-to-ASCII-Generator, describing a cleaned-up interface and additional lighting controls. Because the application has changed since its original coverage, button names and layout should be treated as current only if they match the live page.
Its basic workflow is straightforward:
- load an
.stlmodel; - view and rotate the object interactively;
- use lighting to reveal form and depth;
- choose the characters used for different shades;
- change the foreground/background presentation, including the reported black-on-white option;
- export a PNG or copy the raw text representation.
The result is best understood as a shaded rendering made from characters instead of ordinary pixels. It is a playful visualization tool, not a slicer, mesh-repair utility, CAD inspector, or engineering-analysis application.

ASCII art is not the same as ASCII STL
“ASCII STL” usually means a text-encoded STL file. That file still describes triangular facets using records such as vertices and normals; it is intended to be read by 3D software.
This generator does something different. It reads the mesh and creates a visual representation in which characters stand in for areas of tone. The output text is therefore artwork, not automatically a valid STL file. Three.js documents ASCII and binary STL as separate file representations in its STL tooling: STLExporter documentation.
How to use it
- Open the hosted page. Use the creator-linked tool. Public hosting and availability can change, so a page that worked when linked may not remain online indefinitely.
- Choose an STL file. Select a model from your computer and wait for the mesh to appear.
- Find a readable view. Orbit or rotate the model until its silhouette and important features are visible.
- Adjust lighting. Change the available lighting controls to bring out curvature, cavities, and edges. A different light direction can make the same geometry look dramatically different.
- Choose a character ramp. A ramp is an ordered set of characters used to represent tonal differences. A short, high-contrast ramp usually gives a clearer silhouette; a longer ramp can show more subtle shading.
- Try the alternate display style. If the current version exposes the reported black-on-white option, compare it with the default presentation. One may work better for printing, documentation, or a light terminal theme.
- Export the result. Use PNG when you need stable visual layout, or raw text when you want to edit, search, copy, or display the art in a terminal.
The exact labels and controls are not fixed by the original 2022 report. If you are documenting a repeatable workflow, record the tool URL, date, browser, STL file, character set, lighting settings, view angle, and export type.

The generator starts with a 3D surface but presents it through a camera. Rotating the model changes the visible silhouette, while lighting changes how bright or dark each surface appears. Those tonal changes are mapped to characters with different visual densities.
Dark, dense characters can suggest shadowed areas; lighter characters can suggest highlights or empty space. Together with perspective and the outline of the object, that contrast communicates curvature and depth. A sphere, for example, can read as rounded because the characters gradually change across its surface rather than stopping at a flat outline.
This explanation describes the visible rendering idea, not a verified implementation specification. The available sources do not establish the project’s exact sampling method, luminance formula, resolution, ray-tracing method, or voxelization process.

What Three.js contributes
Hackaday identifies Three.js as a major part of the project. Three.js is a JavaScript 3D library that can load the model, place its geometry in a scene, position a camera, and render the interactive view.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIts documented STLLoader supports both binary and ASCII STL files and parses them into renderable geometry. That means a normal STL may work whether it was exported as a compact binary file or as a human-readable text file. The specific application can still impose practical limits or handle edge cases differently, so “Three.js supports it” should not be read as a guarantee that every unusual STL will load successfully.
A useful conceptual pipeline is:
- read the selected STL;
- parse its triangles into Three.js geometry;
- place that geometry in a scene;
- apply a camera and lighting;
- translate the visual result into characters;
- display or export the resulting image or text.
This is an explanatory model of the workflow, not a claim about every internal step in the project.
Which STL files are suitable?
Start with a valid, ordinary STL in either binary or ASCII form. Models with a clear silhouette and moderate geometric complexity are the easiest to turn into readable character art.
Several STL characteristics matter:
- Binary versus ASCII: Three.js’s loader documents support for both, but test the particular application if one representation fails.
- Polygon count: Dense meshes may take longer to parse or render and can make the browser interface sluggish. No universal triangle or file-size limit is established here.
- Scale: STL does not reliably carry units or scale information. Extremely small or large coordinate values can cause framing or visibility problems.
- Geometry validity: Invalid facet data, badly formed files, open surfaces, and non-manifold geometry may produce errors or unexpected results.
- Multiple shells: An STL may contain several disconnected solids. Three.js can represent multiple solids in ASCII STL through geometry groups, but the generator’s treatment of those groups should not be assumed without testing.
- Appearance data: STL primarily describes surface geometry. It does not preserve a normal textured-material workflow, so colored or textured source models become geometry-based, generally monochrome renderings.
For the same reason, the output is not a faithful reproduction of a finished 3D asset. It is a stylized view of the mesh from one position.

Choose the silhouette before chasing detail
A recognizable outer shape matters more than a high triangle count. Rotate the model to show its defining profile, and avoid an angle in which thin or important features overlap the main body.

Use lighting to separate surfaces
Flat-looking output is often a lighting problem rather than a geometry problem. Try a different light direction or stronger contrast. Cavities and rear-facing surfaces may disappear when the lighting is too even, while overly harsh lighting can erase intermediate tones.
Keep the character ramp ordered
Characters should progress clearly from visually light to visually dense. If the ramp has little contrast or an unintuitive order, the model can look muddy even when the camera and lighting are good.
Display text in a monospaced font
Raw ASCII art depends on character width. Use a monospaced font in a terminal, editor, webpage, or design layout. A proportional font gives different characters different widths and can stretch, compress, or skew the image.
Account for terminal proportions
Most text characters are taller than they are wide, so a model that looks correct in the generator may appear vertically distorted in a terminal. Adjust the display area, font size, line spacing, or character dimensions when presenting the text elsewhere.
Pick the right export
PNG preserves the visual arrangement and is usually easier to share consistently across devices. Raw text remains editable and works well for terminal-style projects, documentation, searchable archives, and further experimentation.

The STL does not load
Confirm that the file is actually a valid STL rather than a renamed file in another format. If you have both versions, try the binary and ASCII files separately. Re-exporting the model from a 3D application may remove malformed facet data.

The render is blank
Rotate the model and change the lighting first. The object may be outside the useful camera framing, extremely small or large in coordinate space, or lit in a way that produces little visible contrast.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The model looks like a flat blob
Try a more recognizable angle, a stronger light direction, or a shorter character ramp with clearer tonal separation. A low-detail silhouette often reads better than a finely shaded but low-contrast image.
Thin parts disappear
Choose a more favorable view, increase contrast, and try a less dense character set. Very thin walls, handles, spikes, and internal openings may not survive a character-based reduction at the available display size.
The text looks stretched or broken
Use a monospaced font and preserve line breaks. Avoid pasting the output into a proportional text field or allowing automatic word wrapping.
The output is too large
If the current interface provides a resolution or display-size control, reduce it. Otherwise, PNG may be more practical than raw text for sharing a large result. Reducing the STL’s complexity in another application can also make the workflow easier, though it changes the source geometry.

Colors are missing
This is expected for a normal STL-based workflow. STL does not provide the full color, material, and texture information used by modern appearance-rich 3D assets. The generator is concerned with geometry, lighting, and character tone.
Who should use it?
The tool is a good fit for makers who want a novel view of a printable model, ASCII-art enthusiasts, developers exploring browser 3D, and designers working on terminal-style or retro graphics. It can also illustrate concepts such as meshes, camera projection, lighting, rasterization, and the loss of visual information during conversion.
Possible creative uses include a text-only project page, a terminal dashboard, documentation artwork, a retro interface, or a maker-project logo concept. These are natural applications of the output, not documented promises about the project’s intended use.

Alternatives
Three.js Editor
The official Three.js Editor is a broader browser-based scene editor. It is more appropriate when you need to inspect or prepare a 3D scene, adjust cameras and materials, or work with formats beyond this dedicated ASCII-art workflow. It is not a direct replacement for the character-based generator.
Desktop 3D software
Blender, MeshLab, and CAD applications are better choices when you need to repair geometry, reduce polygon count, change orientation, apply materials, or produce a conventional render before attempting ASCII conversion. They add capability and setup overhead that is unnecessary for a quick novelty image.
A custom Three.js application
Developers who need batch processing, animation, custom character ramps, command-line integration, self-hosting, or reproducible settings can build their own workflow around Three.js’s STLLoader. That route requires implementing and maintaining the rendering and export pipeline, but it offers control that a small hosted tool may not expose.

A browser interface may process a selected file in the browser, but the available information does not prove the current application’s complete data-handling behavior. Do not assume that an STL never leaves the computer without checking the current source and network requests. Avoid uploading confidential or commercially sensitive models until you understand how the live application handles files.
For a result that someone else can reproduce, save the source STL, record the date and URL, note the browser and settings, and preserve both the raw text and PNG when possible. The same model can produce substantially different artwork after a change in view, lighting, character ramp, or display font.
