For most artists, the best iPad in 2026 is the iPad Air with M4. Choose the 13-inch model for a larger canvas and the 11-inch model for portability. Upgrade to the iPad Pro with M5 if you specifically want its Tandem OLED display, adaptive 120Hz ProMotion, higher brightness, Thunderbolt connectivity, or extra headroom for demanding 3D, video, and animation work.

The iPad Air M4 is the strongest balance of drawing space, Apple Pencil support, performance, and price. The iPad Pro M5 is the high-end choice, the iPad mini A17 Pro is the best compact sketchbook, and the entry-level iPad A16 is the budget option—with important Apple Pencil limitations.

Quick recommendations

Model Best for Screen Pencil Main drawback
iPad Air M4, 13-inch Most serious artists and illustrators 12.9-inch-class laminated P3 LCD, 60Hz Apple Pencil Pro or USB-C Not OLED or ProMotion

iPad Pro M5 Professionals, 3D, video, and animation Tandem OLED, adaptive 10–120Hz Apple Pencil Pro or USB-C Very expensive for ordinary illustration
iPad mini A17 Pro Travel sketching and visual notes 8.3-inch laminated LCD, 60Hz Apple Pencil Pro or USB-C Small primary canvas
iPad A16 Beginners and tight budgets 11-inch-class LCD, 500 nits Apple Pencil USB-C or first-generation Pencil No Apple Pencil Pro or hover

Best iPad for most artists: iPad Air M4

The iPad Air M4 is the best choice for most digital painters, illustrators, students, hobbyists, lettering artists, and comic artists. It supports Apple Pencil Pro, including hover, and its M4 processor provides substantially more performance than ordinary sketching and painting workflows require.

Apple iPad 11-inch: A16 chip, 11-inch Model, Liquid Retina Display, 128GB, Wi-Fi 6, 12MP Front/12MP Back Camera, Touch ID, All-Day Battery Life — Blue
  • WHY IPAD — The 11-inch iPad is now more capable than ever with the superfast A16 chip, a stunning Liquid Retina display, advanced cameras, fast Wi-Fi, USB-C connector, and four gorgeous colors.* iPad delivers a powerful way to create, stay connected, and get things done.
  • PERFORMANCE AND STORAGE — The superfast A16 chip delivers a boost in performance for your favorite activities. And with all-day battery life, iPad is perfect for playing immersive games and editing photos and videos.* Storage starts at 128GB and goes up to 512GB.*
  • 11-INCH LIQUID RETINA DISPLAY — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display is an amazing way to watch movies or draw your next masterpiece.* True Tone adjusts the display to the color temperature of the room to make viewing comfortable in any light.
  • IPADOS + APPS — iPadOS makes iPad more productive, intuitive, and versatile. With iPadOS, run multiple apps at once, use Apple Pencil to write in any text field with Scribble, and edit and share photos.* iPad comes with essential apps like Safari, Messages, and Keynote, with over a million more apps designed specifically for iPad available on the App Store.
  • FAST WI-FI CONNECTIVITY — Wi-Fi 6 gives you fast access to your files, uploads, and downloads, and lets you seamlessly stream your favorite shows.

The Air has a fully laminated, P3 wide-color Liquid Retina IPS LCD. The 11-inch version reaches 500 nits and the 13-inch version reaches 600 nits. It is a 60Hz display rather than a ProMotion panel, but 60Hz is sufficient for drawing for most people. You still get a direct-on-screen canvas, accurate-feeling Pencil interaction, and a display without the air gap found on older non-laminated designs.

11-inch or 13-inch Air?

  • Choose the 13-inch Air if the iPad will be your primary canvas, you work on comic pages or large illustrations, use references beside your artwork, or spend most sessions at a desk.
  • Choose the 11-inch Air if you commute, draw in different locations, hold the tablet frequently, or want a more versatile everyday iPad.

For a primary art device, the 13-inch Air with 256GB is the strongest general recommendation. The 11-inch, 256GB configuration is the better all-purpose portable setup. Move to 512GB for substantial animation, video, offline references, or a large local project library.

Best high-end option: iPad Pro M5

The iPad Pro M5 is the best iPad for artists who want the finest display and maximum headroom, not necessarily the best value. Its main advantages over the Air are the Tandem OLED display, adaptive 10–120Hz ProMotion, higher brightness, optional nano-texture glass on eligible 1TB and 2TB configurations, Thunderbolt/USB 4, higher storage ceilings, and the M5 platform.

The display reaches up to 1,000 nits full-screen SDR brightness and 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness. ProMotion can make fast strokes, handwriting, scrolling, and large-canvas navigation feel more fluid. OLED contrast is particularly useful for artists who also edit photographs, video, HDR material, or dark artwork.

Apple iPad 11-inch: A16 chip, 11-inch Model, Liquid Retina Display, 128GB, Wi-Fi 6, 12MP Front/12MP Back Camera, Touch ID, All-Day Battery Life — Silver

  • FAST WI-FI CONNECTIVITY — Wi-Fi 6 gives you fast access to your files, uploads, and downloads, and lets you seamlessly stream your favorite shows.

However, the Pro does not automatically produce dramatically better results in a typical illustration app. For ordinary Procreate painting, the Air’s larger 13-inch canvas may be more useful than an 11-inch Pro’s superior display. Buy the Pro when you will use its display, refresh rate, connectivity, storage, or demanding 3D, video, or animation capability—not simply because M5 is a newer chip.

See Apple’s iPad Pro specifications and current buying page for configurations and prices, which can change.

Best portable sketchbook: iPad mini A17 Pro

The iPad mini is the best compact option for urban sketching, travel, visual notes, quick studies, and artists who already have a larger main computer. Its 8.3-inch, 2266×1488, 326-pixel-per-inch display is fully laminated, reaches 500 nits, supports Apple Pencil Pro, and offers hover.

Its limitation is the same feature that makes it portable: the working area. An 8.3-inch canvas leaves less room for palettes, references, timelines, and large compositions. The 60Hz display is also less luxurious than the Pro’s. Choose it as a portable sketchbook or secondary device; choose the Air for long daily painting sessions or primary comic and illustration work.

Best budget option: iPad A16

The 11-inch iPad A16 is the least expensive new route into basic digital art. It is suitable for beginners, children and teenagers learning to draw, casual sketchers, and people who already own a compatible first-generation Apple Pencil.

The important compromise is the Pencil ecosystem rather than just processing power. The A16 iPad does not support Apple Pencil Pro or hover. It works with Apple Pencil USB-C and the first-generation Apple Pencil. The first-generation Pencil requires a USB-C-to-Apple-Pencil adapter for pairing and charging on this iPad.

That makes the A16 reasonable for a budget introduction to drawing, but a less attractive new professional setup. If you already know you want squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback, magnetic charging, or a larger long-term art setup, the Air is the better starting point.

Apple Pencil buying guide

For the Air, Pro, and mini, the Apple Pencil Pro is the best default stylus. It adds squeeze, barrel roll for orientation-sensitive brushes, haptic feedback, hover preview, double-tap tool switching, Find My, and magnetic attachment, pairing, and charging. Apple lists it at $129 in the United States on the store page observed in August 2026.

Apple Pencil USB-C is a lower-cost option and works with the current iPad models listed by Apple, but it is not equivalent to Pencil Pro for artists. Check the exact model before buying:

  • iPad Pro M4 or M5: Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil USB-C.
  • iPad Air M2, M3, or M4: Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil USB-C.
  • iPad mini A17 Pro: Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil USB-C.
  • iPad A16: Apple Pencil USB-C or first-generation Apple Pencil.

Do not assume Apple Pencil 2 works with every modern iPad, and do not buy Pencil Pro for the A16 iPad. Apple’s compatibility chart and the model-specific specification pages are the safest references.

How much storage do artists need?

  • 128GB: Adequate for beginners who use cloud storage and keep few large projects locally.
  • 256GB: The safer default for most artists and the capacity I would choose for a new primary art device.
  • 512GB: Better for large Procreate libraries, Photoshop files, animation, video, extensive reference packs, or years of offline work.
  • 1TB or more: Mainly for professionals with unusually large local libraries, video, 3D, or demanding multitasking. Power alone does not mean you need 1TB.

High-resolution documents, time-lapse recordings, animation projects, videos, and offline photo libraries can consume space faster than expected. Cloud and external storage help, but they do not make local capacity irrelevant when you work away from a reliable connection.

11-inch versus 13-inch

Buy 11 inches for commuting, travel, mixed tablet use, lower cost, and easier hand-held drawing. It is the better choice if the iPad also needs to be an e-reader, notebook, or general-purpose tablet.

Apple iPad Air 11-inch (M4): Liquid Retina Display, 128GB, 12MP Front/Back Camera, Wi-Fi 7 with Apple N1, Touch ID, All-Day Battery Life — Space Gray
  • WHY IPAD AIR — iPad Air with the Apple M4 chip packs even more performance into a beautiful design, and it comes in two portable sizes. It features Apple Intelligence* along with a stunning Liquid Retina display, Touch ID, advanced cameras, and Wi-Fi 7.*
  • PERFORMANCE AND STORAGE — The M4 chip delivers advanced graphics and incredible performance for smooth multitasking and complex AI tasks. And with all-day battery life, you can keep working and playing wherever you go.* Choose up to 1TB of storage for apps, music, movies, and more.*
  • IPADOS + APPS — Run apps and get more done with the game-changing capabilities and intuitive design of iPadOS. The flexible windowing system lets you control, organize, and manage your workflows like never before.
  • APPLE INTELLIGENCE — Apple Intelligence is the personal intelligence system that helps you create, communicate, and get things done effortlessly with groundbreaking privacy protections at every step.*
  • 11-INCH LIQUID RETINA DISPLAY — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display features advanced technologies like P3 wide color, True Tone, and ultralow reflectivity, which make everything look stunning.*

Buy 13 inches for long sessions, large illustrations, lettering, comic pages, animation timelines, split-screen references, and a desk-based workflow. It is closer to a small laptop workspace, but it is heavier, costs more, and is less convenient to use while standing or traveling.

A 13-inch Air can therefore be a better art tool than an 11-inch Pro if canvas area matters more to you than OLED and 120Hz. Apple’s comparison page lists the current sizes and measured display details.

What type of artist are you?

  • Beginner: Choose the A16 iPad with Apple Pencil USB-C if price is the priority. Choose the Air if you want a setup less likely to feel limiting as your skills develop.
  • Hobbyist or student: The 11-inch Air, 256GB, is the safest balance. Choose 13 inches for long desk sessions.
  • Illustrator or comic artist: Favor the 13-inch Air or 13-inch Pro for canvas area, references, layers, and comfort.
  • Animator: Favor 512GB and consider the Pro if your projects involve demanding timelines, video, or 3D. Layer and project capacity varies with canvas size, color depth, memory, and app version; there is no universal layer-count number.
  • Photographer or designer: The Pro’s OLED, brightness, and contrast are more compelling if you edit HDR photos or video. Confirm that your required iPad apps provide the features and file workflow you need.
  • 3D artist: The Pro’s M5 GPU capabilities, storage ceiling, and Thunderbolt/USB 4 make it the stronger choice, but an iPadOS workflow is not identical to a desktop 3D pipeline.
  • Travel sketcher: Choose the mini for maximum portability or the 11-inch Air for a larger primary canvas.
  • Desktop-tablet user: If you need full desktop Blender, CAD, plug-ins, extensive file automation, many external drives, or software available only on macOS or Windows, a Mac or PC with a Wacom, Huion, or XP-Pen display may be the better core setup.

iPadOS and app limitations

An iPad is excellent for direct-on-screen drawing, painting, lettering, concept art, annotation, portable photography, and design workflows that fit iPadOS. Relevant apps to investigate include Procreate, Procreate Dreams, Photoshop for iPad, Adobe Fresco, Clip Studio Paint, Affinity, Concepts, Nomad Sculpt, and LumaFusion.

Do not assume an iPad version has feature parity with the macOS or Windows version. Before buying for a specific professional workflow, check the current app listing, supported file formats, plug-ins, export options, and subscription terms. An M5 iPad Pro is powerful, but it is not a universal desktop replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What else to budget for

The tablet is only part of an art setup. Add the Pencil, then consider a protective folio or drawing stand, replacement Pencil tips, a USB-C hub, cloud or external storage, and the apps your workflow requires. A paper-texture protector can add friction and reduce glare, but it can also reduce perceived sharpness and increase Pencil-tip wear. A standard glass protector preserves clarity better. Neither is essential.

Cellular is optional. Wi-Fi is enough for most home, school, and studio artists. Cellular helps with outdoor sketching, travel, and client visits, but adds purchase and recurring plan costs. AppleCare+ may be worth considering for a device that travels frequently; coverage and pricing vary by model and term.

Final buying advice

  1. Most artists: Buy the 11-inch or 13-inch iPad Air M4 with 256GB and Apple Pencil Pro. Choose 13 inches for a primary studio canvas; choose 11 inches for portability.
  2. Professionals and demanding workflows: Buy the 13-inch iPad Pro M5 with Apple Pencil Pro if you will use OLED, ProMotion, higher brightness, nano-texture glass, high storage, Thunderbolt, or demanding 3D, video, or animation tools.
  3. Beginners on a strict budget: Buy the iPad A16 with Apple Pencil USB-C, understanding that it lacks Apple Pencil Pro, hover, and the Pro stylus features.

For a second, highly portable sketchbook, choose the iPad mini A17 Pro. For most primary art setups, however, the iPad Air M4 is the clearest recommendation: it puts money into canvas size and Pencil capability instead of charging every artist for display and performance upgrades they may never use.
