AuraFlow is a real open-source text-to-image model developed by fal, but it is not new in 2026. AuraFlow v0.1 was announced on July 12, 2024, and the current official hosted version is v0.3, still described as beta. Its appeal is downloadable weights, an Apache 2.0 license, and a focus on prompt understanding and complex compositions. Its drawbacks are equally important: the roughly 6.8–7 billion-parameter model is demanding to run locally, and newer models may be preferable for speed, editing, ecosystem support, or leading-edge image quality.
The short answer
AuraFlow is model technology rather than a single consumer app. You can use it through fal’s hosted playground or API, download the weights from Hugging Face for a local Diffusers workflow, or use a compatible interface such as ComfyUI.
Choose AuraFlow if you value open deployment, private local generation, permissive licensing, and experimentation with long prompts or multi-object scenes. Consider another model if you need fast generation on modest hardware, advanced image editing, a polished beginner-friendly application, or demonstrably current state-of-the-art output.

AuraFlow is a text-to-image generative model created by fal. It converts a written prompt into an image and is distributed as downloadable model weights rather than being restricted to a closed web application. It is integrated with Hugging Face’s Diffusers ecosystem and is supported by ComfyUI’s model implementation.

The model uses flow-matching or rectified-flow ideas. At a high level, a text encoder turns the prompt into conditioning information; the generative network transforms noise toward an image representation; and a decoder turns that representation into the final image. The Diffusers documentation says AuraFlow was inspired by Stable Diffusion 3 and uses a T5-based text encoder, specifically an EleutherAI/pile-t5-xl variant. “Flow-based” does not automatically mean faster. The official documentation warns that AuraFlow can be expensive on consumer hardware, while the hosted service describes a typical 50-step generation process.
Release timeline and current version
- July 12, 2024: fal announced AuraFlow v0.1.
- 2024: v0.2 and v0.3 releases followed.
- Current official documentation located for this article: the fal endpoint identifies AuraFlow v0.3 as the relevant hosted version and continues to label it beta.
AuraFlow’s parameter count is reported slightly differently across official pages: the Hugging Face collection describes approximately 6.8 billion parameters, while the individual model page rounds this to about 7 billion. That is a rounding difference, not a separate small and large model.
Why AuraFlow mattered when it launched
fal presented AuraFlow v0.1 as the largest fully open-source flow-based text-to-image model at the time. Its model card also reported state-of-the-art GenEval performance for that period. Those are historical launch claims, not evidence that AuraFlow remains the best image model in 2026.
The important distinction was openness. Users could download the weights, integrate the model into their own software, run it without relying on one web interface, and inspect or modify the inference implementation. The Apache 2.0 license was also unusually permissive compared with several competing model licenses.

That openness should not be overstated. Open weights and open inference code do not necessarily mean that every training image, data license, filtering decision, or training detail is publicly documented or independently reproducible.
What AuraFlow can generate
The hosted API accepts a text prompt and can return one or more images. Its current schema supports up to two images per request, a seed for repeatable experiments, guidance scale, configurable inference steps, and optional prompt expansion. The hosted endpoint returns 1024×1024 PNG output by default.

fal markets AuraFlow around semantic precision and complex composition. In practical terms, its documented design goals include handling long natural-language descriptions, relationships between multiple objects, and creative or marketing-image briefs. Treat these as design goals and vendor claims rather than a universal independent quality ranking.
Three ways to use AuraFlow
1. fal’s hosted playground
The simplest route is the interactive experience on fal’s AuraFlow page. This avoids installing Python, downloading several gigabytes of model files, or configuring a GPU. It is the best first step for deciding whether the model’s visual style and prompt behavior suit your work.

fal uses usage-based billing. Its pricing documentation says users purchase prepaid credits and are charged for successful outputs, while rates vary by model. Check the live model page or pricing API for the current AuraFlow rate; do not assume the API is free or has a fixed subscription price.
3. Local Diffusers
The current model-card installation path is:

ComfyUI
AuraFlow is supported in ComfyUI’s model code. ComfyUI is useful when you want visual node-based workflows, reusable graphs, batch generation, control and upscaling nodes, or post-processing. The exact checkpoint location and workflow labels can vary with the ComfyUI release, so follow the documentation for the version you install rather than assuming every older workflow file will work unchanged.

Hardware and installation realities
There is no universal minimum VRAM figure established by the official sources. Actual requirements depend on resolution, precision, batch size, software versions, and whether CPU offloading or quantization is enabled.
Plan for a large model download, substantial GPU memory use, and slower generation than lightweight or distilled image models. Common dependencies include PyTorch, Diffusers, Transformers, Accelerate, and—depending on the environment—protobuf and sentencepiece.
If local generation fails, work through these fixes:
- Update Diffusers, Transformers, Accelerate, and PyTorch in a clean virtual environment.
- Check that the CUDA toolkit, GPU driver, and installed PyTorch build are compatible.
- Try a supported reduced-precision format.
- Enable model CPU offloading or quantization where supported.
- Lower image dimensions and batch size.
- Reduce inference steps while diagnosing the setup.
- Close other applications using GPU memory.
- Confirm that the model download completed successfully.
- Use fal’s hosted inference if the machine cannot load the model reliably.
The official Diffusers page specifically points users toward memory-saving optimization and quantization.

Prompt expansion can help a short request such as “red ceramic teapot on a wooden table”, but it may add details you did not ask for. For controlled comparisons, disable it explicitly:

Commercial use and licensing
The AuraFlow model card identifies the release under the Apache 2.0 license, and fal states that commercial use is permitted and the full weights are available. Apache 2.0 generally allows broad reuse, modification, and distribution, subject to the license’s conditions.
That is not blanket legal clearance for every commercial image or deployment. Separately assess:

- the complete model license and notices;
- training-data provenance and copyright concerns;
- privacy and personal-data issues;
- trademark, publicity, and likeness risks;
- the laws in your jurisdiction;
- the terms and data handling of fal or another hosted provider;
- licenses for LoRAs, adapters, workflows, control models, and other components.
Hosted API use also adds provider billing and service terms even when the underlying model has a permissive license.
AuraFlow compared with alternatives

The fal AuraFlow page positions AuraFlow against FLUX.1 [dev] by emphasizing semantic and compositional accuracy, while describing FLUX as emphasizing resolution flexibility and fine-detail control. That is vendor positioning, not a controlled 2026 comparison. Model quality varies with checkpoints, samplers, interfaces, prompts, and hardware.
Stable Diffusion 3.5 remains relevant for its ecosystem, but review Stability AI’s current license carefully: its Community License is aimed at individuals and organizations generating under $1 million in annual revenue, with separate enterprise terms for larger organizations and API providers.
Who should use AuraFlow?
AuraFlow is a sensible choice for developers, researchers, open-source advocates, and creators with capable GPUs who want to own the deployment path. It is also attractive when private, repeatable local experimentation matters more than convenience.
