OpenAI’s March 25, 2025 announcement meant that users could create and edit images conversationally inside ChatGPT, with the same GPT-4o image-generation capability also available in Sora at the time. That is no longer the current product story: ChatGPT Images 2.0 is now OpenAI’s image-generation experience, while Sora’s web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026.
For painters, illustrators, educators, and visual creators, the practical takeaway is simple: use ChatGPT to generate references, concepts, layouts, and edits through natural-language prompts. Treat Sora as historical context rather than a current image-generation destination.
What OpenAI originally announced
On March 25, 2025, OpenAI announced native image generation through GPT-4o. Instead of switching to a separate image-generation interface, users could describe an image in ChatGPT, refine it through conversation, and ask for targeted changes.

This was not simply “ChatGPT got DALL·E.” GPT-4o image generation was integrated into the multimodal ChatGPT experience, while DALL·E remained available separately through its dedicated GPT.

OpenAI also said the capability was available in Sora during that rollout. Sora, however, was primarily a video-generation product. Its inclusion made sense for users working across still images and video, but it did not make Sora interchangeable with ChatGPT’s image tool.
At launch, access began with Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu access expected later. Product availability and limits were subject to rollout conditions.

What is available now
As of August 18, 2026, OpenAI lists ChatGPT Images 2.0 as available across all ChatGPT tiers. It is available on the web, iOS, and Android. The current experience can create new images, edit uploaded or previously generated images, add or change text, alter aspect ratios, and produce transparent backgrounds.
“Available on all plans” does not mean unlimited use or identical limits. Generation limits, regional rollout, account eligibility, and workspace administrator settings can differ. OpenAI also lists Images with thinking for Plus, Pro, and Business users, with Enterprise and Edu support described as coming soon in its help documentation.
Images with thinking is a mode associated with supported Thinking and Pro models. OpenAI says it can spend more time planning and refining an image, use reasoning and tools such as live web-search data, and generate multiple images from one prompt. It is not a separate consumer application.

How to generate an image in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT on the web, iOS, or Android.
- Either describe the image directly in a conversation or choose More → Images.
- Write the prompt and submit it.
- Wait for the result. OpenAI says generation can take a few minutes depending on complexity.
- Open the finished image to save, copy, share, edit, or change its aspect ratio.
Created images are automatically collected in ChatGPT’s Images area. According to OpenAI’s help documentation, deleting the conversation in which an image was created also removes that image from the collection.

You can upload an existing image or select an image ChatGPT generated, then describe the change you want. For a local edit, use the selection tool to highlight an area. You can also describe the target area without making a selection.
For example, a painter could upload a landscape reference and request: “Keep the composition, horizon line, lighting, and buildings unchanged. Convert the color palette to muted ochre, ultramarine, and burnt sienna.”
After editing, you can save the result, copy it, share it, or adjust its aspect ratio. Selection-based edits are useful but not perfectly bounded: changes can spill beyond the highlighted region. To reduce unintended changes, state exactly what must remain unchanged.
Prompt patterns for painters and visual creators
Concept reference
Create a square reference image of a quiet coastal village at dawn, viewed from a low hill. Use simplified architectural shapes, soft mist, warm side light, and a restrained palette of ultramarine, ochre, and muted coral. No text.

Precise design control
Create a 4:5 editorial poster using cream, navy, and coral. Use navy #14213D for the headline, leave 20% empty space at the top, and include the exact text: “Designing for Tomorrow.”

Iterative edit
Keep the subject, camera angle, lighting, and composition unchanged. Replace only the red jacket with a dark green raincoat.
Regional edit
Change only the sky inside the selected area to a soft sunset gradient. Do not alter the buildings, people, shadows, or color temperature elsewhere.
Transparent asset
Create a clean front-facing illustration of a yellow bicycle with a transparent background, no shadows, no text, and a simple flat-vector style.

Strong prompts usually specify the subject, composition, camera angle, lighting, style, aspect ratio, exact text, colors, and what must remain unchanged. For a series of images, repeat the important constraints in every prompt rather than assuming the system will preserve them perfectly.
What ChatGPT Images does well
- Conversational refinement: you can ask for several rounds of changes without rebuilding the prompt from scratch.
- Reference transformations: uploaded images can be restyled, simplified, recolored, or adapted to another format.
- Text and layouts: posters, labels, social graphics, and simple marketing compositions are supported, although every word still needs proofreading.
- Transparent backgrounds: useful for concept assets, cutouts, and compositing.
- Aspect-ratio changes: a concept can be adapted for a square post, portrait poster, or landscape header.
- Creative development: ChatGPT can combine visual ideation with writing, planning, critique, and descriptive analysis in one conversation.
Where it still needs supervision
Generated text has improved but is not guaranteed to be correct. For commercial artwork, verify every word, number, URL, label, and legal disclaimer. A safer workflow is to generate the visual without important text and add final typography in a design application.
Selection highlights are not precise masks. A request to change one object may affect nearby lighting, shadows, textures, or facial details. Use narrow instructions such as: “Change only the selected object. Preserve the composition, lighting, background, facial expression, and camera angle.”

Complex prompts can take longer and may produce inconsistent results. Maps, diagrams, scientific labels, historical scenes, logos, and technical illustrations require human review because a plausible-looking image is not necessarily factually accurate.

Do not try to evade those safeguards. For a legitimate request, remove deceptive likeness instructions, use fictional subjects where possible, and describe a general visual style rather than asking for an exact imitation of a living artist.
ChatGPT Images vs DALL·E vs Sora

DALL·E remains relevant if you specifically want its dedicated GPT or want to compare it with ChatGPT Images. ChatGPT Images is the more natural choice for conversational iteration, uploaded-image editing, and combining image work with other ChatGPT tasks.
Sora was the better historical fit for motion, scene progression, dialogue, and synchronized sound. It should not be presented as a current way to generate still images. OpenAI’s Sora sunset documentation gives the export path as sora.chatgpt.com/sunset, followed by Export.

- Free: the sensible starting point for occasional image creation because ChatGPT Images 2.0 is listed as available.
- Plus: a better fit for regular individual use and access to supported paid capabilities. OpenAI’s April 2026 release notes listed a $20-per-month price signal, but check the live pricing page for current pricing.
- Pro: aimed at heavy users who also value higher overall ChatGPT usage and advanced reasoning. It is difficult to justify for image generation alone; the release notes listed $100 and $200 monthly options on April 9, 2026, so verify current pricing.
- Business: appropriate for teams that need workspace administration and collaborative use, not usually for a solo creator.
Plan availability is different from unlimited access. Limits and model access can vary, and workspace administrators may restrict capabilities.
Safety, provenance, and responsible use
Realistic image generation can enable impersonation, misleading evidence, and deepfakes. Do not present a generated person, place, event, diagram, or historical scene as authentic without verification. Disclose AI-generated imagery when the surrounding context requires it, especially in journalism, education, advertising, political communication, and documentary work.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images 2.0 system card describes prompt, input-image, and output-image safety classifiers and highlights risks from realistic deepfakes. That is different from automatically claiming that every ChatGPT image has the same visible watermark or provenance treatment documented for Sora video. Provenance features should be attributed to the specific product and media type involved.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Images option is missing
- Try describing the image directly in a new chat.
- Look under More → Images.
- Update the iOS or Android app.
- Try ChatGPT on the web.
- Confirm that you are using the intended account and workspace.
- Check OpenAI’s current help pages or release notes for rollout and regional availability.
The interface may move the feature into a horizontal toolbar or another menu, and an administrator may control access in a managed workspace.
The request is refused
Do not attempt to bypass the refusal. Remove real-person likeness instructions, sexualized or deceptive elements, or restricted artist-imitation requests. If the request is benign, explain the fictional or educational context and use a general style description.

The text is wrong
Use short, exact text and ask for a clean proof version. For important designs, create the image without text and add final typography separately.
The edit changes too much
Use a selection when helpful, then explicitly preserve the composition, lighting, camera angle, background, shadows, and all unselected objects. Expect some spillover and review the result at full size.
Bottom line
The original headline was about OpenAI bringing GPT-4o image generation directly into ChatGPT and, at the time, Sora. The current destination is ChatGPT Images 2.0: a conversational tool for creating, editing, resizing, and refining images on the web, iOS, and Android. DALL·E remains available through its dedicated GPT, while Sora’s web and app experiences are discontinued. For painting and visual development, ChatGPT is useful as a fast reference and concept partner—but its text, edits, factual details, and potentially misleading realistic imagery still require human judgment.
