There is no single best drawing app for Mac. The right choice depends first on what you make: Krita is the strongest free starting point for digital painting, Photoshop is the safest choice for raster work and professional file exchange, Illustrator remains the dependable option for vector illustration, and Sketchbook is the easiest place to begin sketching.
For a non-Adobe workflow, look at Affinity; for comics and manga, choose Clip Studio Paint; and for accessible Mac-and-iPad vector work, consider Linearity Curve. One important correction before you start: Procreate is an iPad app, not a native Mac desktop drawing application.
Quick recommendations
| App | Best for | Type | Price model | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Krita | Free digital painting | Raster | Free and open source; check Mac App Store terms separately | Dense interface and steeper learning curve |
| Adobe Photoshop | Professional painting, editing, and compositing | Raster/hybrid | Subscription | Recurring cost is excessive for casual sketching |
| Adobe Illustrator | Logos, branding, and print-ready vector art | Vector | Subscription | More complex than most hobbyists need |
| Affinity | Non-Adobe professional workflows | Raster/vector/layout | Verify the current offer on the official site | Adobe file and ecosystem compatibility can vary |
| Clip Studio Paint | Comics, manga, and line art | Raster/hybrid | Verify current edition and license | Plan and edition choices can be confusing |
| Sketchbook | Simple sketching and painting | Raster | Paid Mac app | Limited advanced production features |
| Linearity Curve | Accessible vector work across Mac and iPad | Vector | Free and paid plans; verify current terms | Not a complete Illustrator replacement |
| Pixelmator Pro | Mac-native photo editing and raster design | Raster/hybrid | Verify current Apple Store pricing | Not a full vector or comics application |
| Inkscape | Free SVG and vector drawing | Vector | Free and open source | Less polished Mac experience |

“Drawing app” describes several different kinds of software. Choosing by popularity alone often produces a poor fit.
#1 Best Overall

- Works With All Software: Wacom Intuos tablet can be used in any software program to explore new facets of digital creativity; draw, paint, edit photos/videos, create designs, and mark up documents

- Wacom is the Global Leader in Drawing Tablet and Displays: For over 40 years in pen display and tablet market, you can trust that Wacom to help you bring your vision, ideas and creativity to life
- Raster apps paint with pixels. They are best for textured brushes, natural-media effects, photo editing, and painted illustrations. Krita, Photoshop, Sketchbook, and Clip Studio Paint belong here.
- Vector apps create mathematically defined paths. Lines and shapes can be scaled without becoming pixelated, making them suitable for logos, icons, typography, diagrams, and much print design. Illustrator, Affinity, Linearity Curve, and Inkscape are vector choices.
- Hybrid apps combine raster and vector tools, but the balance differs. Photoshop is primarily raster; Affinity spans several design disciplines; Clip Studio Paint uses vector techniques particularly well for inking.
- Sketching apps prioritize speed, a clean canvas, and low friction over complex production features. Sketchbook is the clearest example.
- Comics and animation apps add page management, panels, speech balloons, rulers, screen tones, onion skinning, or timelines. Clip Studio Paint and Krita are more appropriate than a generic sketchpad for these jobs.
The best drawing apps for Mac
1. Krita — best free app for digital painting
Choose Krita if you want a serious desktop painting environment without a subscription. It offers a broad brush system, layers, blending modes, masks, stabilization, natural-media tools, animation features, and a workflow designed around illustration rather than general office graphics.
Its biggest advantage is value: the desktop application is free and open source. That makes it the best first download for someone learning digital painting, especially when the budget is better spent on a pressure-sensitive tablet.
The trade-off is presentation. Krita exposes many controls and can feel less immediately approachable than Sketchbook. It is also less convenient when your clients, plugins, or collaborators depend heavily on Photoshop-specific features. PSD import and export are useful, but opening a PSD is not the same as guaranteeing perfect round-tripping.

Skip it if: you need the most polished commercial ecosystem, extensive Photoshop compatibility, or the simplest possible first-launch experience.
Download Krita from the official project. Check its current macOS and Apple-silicon requirements before installing on an older Intel Mac.
2. Adobe Photoshop — best professional raster all-rounder
Choose Photoshop when editing, painting, compositing, client compatibility, and plugins matter more than avoiding subscriptions. It is especially practical for artists who combine painted elements with photographs, scans, typography, adjustment layers, masks, and production-ready exports.
Photoshop is not automatically the best pure painting application. Krita may be a more compelling choice when brush-focused work is the entire job. Photoshop wins when the rest of the professional workflow matters: established PSD exchange, broad third-party support, Adobe integration, and familiar delivery requirements.
Adobe lists Photoshop among its applications with native Apple-silicon support. Its current US individual pricing page lists Photoshop at US$22.99 per month on an annual commitment billed monthly; that is a US price and billing structure, not a universal global price.
Best for: raster illustration, photo editing, compositing, painted-over photography, and professional PSD workflows.
Skip it if: you sketch occasionally, want a one-time purchase, or do not need Adobe compatibility.
See Adobe’s current plans and Apple-silicon compatibility information before subscribing.
3. Adobe Illustrator — best for professional vector illustration
Choose Illustrator for logos, branding, icons, typography, scalable artwork, and established agency or print workflows. Its Bézier pen tools, shape operations, precise strokes, gradients, type controls, reusable assets, and export settings are designed for artwork that must remain mathematically scalable and editable.

Illustrator is the safest recommendation when a client, agency, printer, or supplier expects editable Adobe-native files or relies on familiar Illustrator production practices. That does not mean every vector task requires it: Affinity, Linearity Curve, and Inkscape can be better value for independent artists and simpler projects.
Adobe lists Illustrator as native on Apple silicon. For Illustrator version 30.0 and later, Adobe’s requirements list macOS 13 Ventura, 14 Sonoma, 15 Sequoia, and 26 Tahoe, with 8 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB recommended. Older Intel Macs may be limited by both macOS support and the application version available to them.
The current US individual price shown by Adobe is US$22.99 per month on an annual commitment billed monthly. Check the live plan for tax, promotions, and regional differences.
Best for: professional vector illustration, branding, packaging, print, and client file exchange.
Skip it if: you mainly want textured painting or quick freehand sketches.
Read Illustrator’s current technical requirements before installing on an older Mac.
4. Affinity — best Adobe alternative
Choose Affinity if you want a deeper non-Adobe design workflow spanning vector, raster, and layout tasks. It is more ambitious than a simple sketching app and can suit independent illustrators who want to keep their work outside Adobe’s subscription ecosystem.
Affinity is attractive for users who need more production control than Linearity Curve or Sketchbook provide, but its file exchange should be evaluated honestly. Adobe-native files, plugins, color libraries, effects, and complex live documents may not behave identically outside Adobe applications.
Affinity’s product structure, ownership, and pricing have changed enough that older “Affinity Designer 2” articles are unreliable buying references. Use the current official Affinity site and verify the exact application, included features, storefront, and upgrade terms.
Best for: independent professionals seeking a non-Adobe vector, raster, and layout toolkit.

5. Clip Studio Paint — best for comics and manga
Choose Clip Studio Paint when panels, inking, screen tones, speech balloons, perspective rulers, page templates, or animation are central to your work. Its stabilization and line-art tools are particularly relevant to comics and manga, while multi-page documents and production-oriented exports make it more suitable than a general sketching app for serialized work.
It can also be a strong illustration application, but its interface is more specialized than Sketchbook’s and less general-purpose than Photoshop’s. Clip Studio Paint has multiple editions and licensing arrangements, including distinctions between subscription and other license types, so verify the current offer rather than relying on an old price chart.

Best for: comics, manga, webtoons, line art, screen tones, and 2D animation.
Skip it if: you need primarily vector branding tools or a completely free application.
Check the current editions and Mac requirements on the official Clip Studio Paint page.
6. Sketchbook — best for simple sketching
Choose Sketchbook when you want to open a clean canvas and start drawing immediately. Its uncluttered interface, straightforward brushes, familiar navigation, and low setup burden make it a strong beginner choice and a pleasant tool for thumbnails, studies, notes, and freehand concepts.
It is not the best choice for advanced vector illustration, complex page layout, or a studio that depends on deep production integrations. It also does not remove the need for a suitable input device: Sketchbook’s Mac version is optimized for pen-based input and pressure-sensitive tablets or pen displays.

7. Linearity Curve — best lightweight vector app
Choose Linearity Curve for approachable vector illustration and a workflow that moves between Mac, iPad, and iPhone. It is well suited to social graphics, icons, simple illustrations, and designers who prefer an accessible interface over the full complexity of Illustrator.
Curve should not be treated as an interchangeable Illustrator clone. Print-production requirements, enterprise workflows, plugin support, color libraries, and advanced client compatibility may favor Illustrator or Affinity.

8. Pixelmator Pro — best Mac-native raster and photo hybrid
Choose Pixelmator Pro when photo editing, compositing, and raster design are more important than specialist painting or vector production. Its close relationship with Apple’s Mac ecosystem makes it appealing to users who want a Mac-focused creative application for images, corrections, layouts, and illustrated composites.
It can be an excellent complement to a drawing tablet, but it is not a dedicated comics environment or a complete replacement for Illustrator’s vector-production workflow. Verify the current price and purchase terms on Apple’s product page, since older reviews may describe a previous offer.
Best for: Mac-native image editing, photo-based illustration, and raster design.
Recommended Free Tools
Skip it if: you need deep natural-media painting, multi-page comics tools, or professional vector interchange.
9. Inkscape — best free vector option
Choose Inkscape when SVG drawing is the priority and the budget is zero. It provides a capable free and open-source route into vector paths, shapes, typography, and scalable artwork.
The compromise is usability. The Mac experience may feel less polished or immediately approachable than commercial alternatives, and Adobe file exchange is not its strongest reason to choose it. For learning SVG and making independent vector artwork, however, it is difficult to beat on price.
Best for: free vector drawing, SVG editing, diagrams, and experimentation.
Skip it if: you prioritize the smoothest Mac interface, commercial support, or reliable Adobe-native exchange.
Choose by use case
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |

| Beginner sketching | Sketchbook | Clear interface and quick setup |
| Free digital painting | Krita | Full desktop painting tool without a subscription |
| Professional raster work | Photoshop | Editing, compositing, plugins, and PSD ecosystem |
| Concept art | Krita or Photoshop | Brushes, layers, masks, and large-canvas workflows |
| Line art | Clip Studio Paint or Krita | Stabilization and illustration-focused tools |
| Comics and manga | Clip Studio Paint | Panels, balloons, rulers, tones, and page workflows |
| Logos and branding | Illustrator or Affinity | Precise scalable paths and typography |
| Simple vector graphics | Linearity Curve | Accessible Mac-and-iPad workflow |
| Free vector work | Inkscape | Open-source SVG tools |
| Photo editing plus drawing | Photoshop or Pixelmator Pro | Raster editing and compositing |
| No subscription | Krita, Inkscape, Affinity, or Pixelmator Pro | Potentially free or non-recurring options; verify current licensing |
| Established PSD workflow | Photoshop | Best chance of preserving Photoshop-specific document features |
| Mac-and-iPad workflow | Sketchbook, Linearity Curve, Photoshop, or Affinity | Cross-device options vary by app and feature |
PSD support: opening a file is not the same as preserving it
Many apps advertise PSD import or export, but compatibility is not binary. A basic layered PSD may transfer well; a production file containing adjustment layers, smart objects, vector masks, text layers, clipping groups, layer effects, linked assets, animation timelines, or unusual blend modes may not.
If you exchange editable files with Photoshop users, test the exact workflow before committing. Create a representative document, save it in each direction, reopen it, and inspect layers, masks, text, effects, color profiles, and editability. For reliable Photoshop round-tripping, Photoshop itself is the least ambiguous choice.
Do you need a drawing tablet?
Usually, yes, if you want a natural pressure-sensitive drawing experience. A MacBook or iMac does not provide the same direct pen input as an iPad with Apple Pencil. You can draw with a mouse or trackpad, but freehand painting is generally more comfortable with a:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Screenless pen tablet: the pen moves on a separate surface while your artwork appears on the Mac display.
- Pen display: you draw directly on the screen, usually at a higher cost.
- iPad-based setup: Sidecar or another supported arrangement can add pen input, but app and feature support varies.
Pressure, tilt, rotation, and eraser support depend on both the tablet driver and the application. A simpler app paired with a good tablet can be a better beginner experience than an advanced application used with a mouse. Official tablet choices include Wacom’s pen tablets and displays; Huion and XP-Pen also make Mac-compatible options, but check the current driver and macOS support for the exact model.

Mac hardware and compatibility
Apple silicon versus Intel
Current Apple-silicon Macs generally offer the safest path for new releases, but an older Intel Mac is not automatically unusable. Check the exact macOS requirement, GPU and Metal requirements, plugin compatibility, and whether the newest version supports your machine. Some applications may run through Rosetta, while older plugins may be the limiting factor.
Adobe specifically lists Photoshop and Illustrator among its native Apple-silicon applications. Adobe’s compatibility pages also separate Apple-silicon support from macOS-version support, so check both.
RAM, storage, and canvas size
8 GB is a practical baseline for many drawing applications, but it is not a promise of smooth performance with large canvases, hundreds of layers, animation, live filters, high-bit-depth color, or large imported images. For serious work, 16 GB or more is preferable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStorage matters too. Layered documents, brush libraries, local caches, scratch data, and exported versions can consume space quickly. Keep adequate free storage and use a backup system for original files.
Do not judge performance solely from minimum requirements. Test a document that resembles your real work: the same canvas size, layer count, brush size, filters, and export format.
Offline use, accounts, and storefronts
“Works offline” can mean several different things. Ask four separate questions:
- Can the application launch after installation without an internet connection?
- Does first activation or license verification require internet?
- Are subscription or account checks required periodically?
- Can cloud documents, fonts, brushes, and linked assets be used offline?
Adobe’s Creative Cloud desktop requirements list an internet connection, and subscription status, activation, cloud features, and validation can affect offline workflows. That does not mean every Adobe document is permanently unusable offline; it means you should not assume uninterrupted offline access.

The Mac App Store, a developer website, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other marketplaces can issue different licenses. Confirm whether the license transfers to another Mac, whether the App Store build has the same features, where cloud documents live, and what happens to editable files if a subscription ends.
What about Procreate and Adobe Fresco?
Procreate should not be listed as a Mac desktop drawing app. Its official App Store listing centers on iPad hardware and Apple Pencil features. It remains highly relevant if you own an iPad, but it does not replace a native Mac application.
Adobe Fresco is similarly better treated as a touch-oriented painting option for supported devices rather than a default Mac desktop recommendation. If your requirement is specifically “draw on a Mac,” verify that the application has a native Mac desktop version—not merely an iPad listing that appears in a Mac search result, a browser editor, or a companion app.
How to choose without wasting money
- Classify the output. Choose raster for painting and photo work, vector for scalable logos and graphics, and a specialist comics tool for pages and panels.
- Check your Mac. Record the model, Apple-silicon or Intel processor, RAM, macOS version, available storage, and any required plugins.
- Check your input device. Install the current tablet driver and confirm pressure support for the exact app.
- Use the same test document. Try a representative canvas with your normal brush sizes, layers, stabilization, masks, text, and export formats.
- Test file exchange. If you use PSD, SVG, PDF, AI, or print files, reopen exported documents and inspect what survived.
- Read the license carefully. Distinguish a free open-source app, free tier, trial, subscription, and one-time purchase. Check storefront and upgrade terms.
- Test recovery and storage. Confirm autosave or recovery behavior, decide where originals are stored, and back up before major macOS upgrades.
Tablet pressure not working?
- Confirm the tablet driver supports your installed macOS version.
- Grant the manufacturer’s required Accessibility and Input Monitoring permissions.
- Restart the drawing app after changing permissions.
- Select the tablet in the app’s input settings.
- Test pressure in the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility.
- Check whether the app supports tilt, rotation, and eraser input.
- Remove obsolete or conflicting tablet drivers.
Pressure failures are not automatically caused by the drawing application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Bottom line
Choose Krita for the best free route into serious Mac digital painting. Choose Photoshop when professional raster editing, PSD exchange, plugins, and Adobe compatibility justify a subscription. Choose Illustrator for established vector, branding, and print workflows. Choose Affinity for a broader non-Adobe design environment, Clip Studio Paint for comics and manga, and Sketchbook for the least intimidating sketching experience.
The app is only half the decision. Your Mac’s operating system, Apple-silicon or Intel compatibility, RAM, tablet driver, file requirements, and licensing model matter just as much.
