The 2021 Mobile Photography Awards showed how far phone photography had developed by the start of the decade. Dan Liu won the grand prize with an iPhone 11 Pro Max, while the winning gallery ranged from street scenes and architecture to macro, low light, landscapes and cultural portraiture. Just as importantly, the recognized images came from several manufacturers and phone generations—not only the newest iPhones.
This is a historical account of the competition held in 2021, not a current awards announcement.
What were the 2021 Mobile Photography Awards?
Established in 2011, the Mobile Photography Awards reached their 10th annual edition in 2021. The competition treated smartphone photography as both a creative medium and a record of the rapid development of mobile cameras.
Contemporary coverage described the 2021 contest as spanning 20 broad categories. The New Atlas presentation brought a selection of the winning work together in a 20-image gallery, although the available article text does not identify every category winner. The awards should therefore be understood as a substantial competition with a broad gallery—not as a definitive ranking of every mobile-photography contest or camera phone.

New Atlas’s February 18, 2021 report framed the results as evidence that smartphones could produce photographs with the artistic ambition and impact associated with professional competitions.
Dan Liu won the grand prize
Dan Liu received the overall Grand Prize for a portfolio made with an iPhone 11 Pro Max. The judging commentary emphasized composition, perspective, light, emotion, action and portraiture, as well as Liu’s timing and narrative instincts.
That rationale matters. It presents the winning work as the product of photographic judgment rather than as a simple victory for one phone’s specifications. The award does not establish that the iPhone 11 Pro Max was objectively the best camera phone, because the competition was not a controlled device comparison. It does show that the jury responded to what Liu saw, chose and captured.

The Huawei entries are identified only by manufacturer in the available text; a precise model is not specified. Similarly, the grand-prize listing should not be treated as a separate category entry for every image associated with Liu’s portfolio.
Why the results were surprising
The gallery covered difficult subjects
These were not exclusively casual snapshots or brightly lit travel photographs. The selection included street photography, people, architecture, landscapes, macro work, transportation, black-and-white imagery, water and ice, darkness, travel and cultural documentation.
That range suggests that mobile photography had become useful across varied photographic practices. “Duo” placed close observation and scale at the center; “Late Night” addressed darkness and contrast; “The Beauty of Arches” made architecture the subject; and “Cantonese Opera” drew attention to human and cultural detail. The strongest images are presented as photographs first and phone pictures second.
Several generations and brands were represented
The device list spans the iPhone 5C, iPhone 7, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone XR, iPhone XS Max and iPhone 11 Pro Max, alongside Xiaomi, Huawei, Vivo, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones. The broader gallery also included an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

This is evidence of a diverse winning pool, not a laboratory test. It does not prove that an older phone matched a newer one in autofocus, dynamic range, low-light performance or video. It does suggest that compelling results were not limited to the latest flagship hardware or to one manufacturer.
Technique mattered more than a specification sheet
The jury’s description of Liu’s work focused on composition, perspective, lighting, emotion, action, portraiture, timing and narrative. Those are decisions made by the photographer. A phone can make capture more convenient and can process exposure, color and detail, but it cannot by itself choose the decisive moment or provide a meaningful point of view.
The awards organization also presented mobile photography as an accessible way to make more photographs and improve through practice. That is the organization’s framing rather than independently verified proof that smartphones make people better photographers. The practical advantage is nevertheless clear: a phone is portable, usually close at hand and ready when an unexpected scene appears.

What they demonstrate
- Smartphones can be used to create highly successful images in many genres.
- Timing, framing, light and subject choice remain central to photographic impact.
- Competition-level mobile photography was not confined to one brand.
- Older phones could still produce award-recognized work in the right hands.
- By 2021, the distinction between a “phone photo” and a serious photograph had become increasingly unhelpful.
What they do not demonstrate
- That smartphones had universally surpassed interchangeable-lens cameras.
- That any winning phone was the best camera phone overall.
- That image quality was independent of editing, accessories, shooting conditions or subject access.
- That every phone user could reproduce the winning results automatically.
- That computational photography alone explains the images’ success.
The available coverage does not establish the full jury, submission rules, editing permissions, use of accessories, entry count or prize structure. It also does not document each photograph’s processing workflow. Awards recognition is valuable evidence of artistic achievement, but it is not a laboratory measurement of hardware performance.

Why the 2021 context matters
It is easy to look back from 2026 and judge these phones by current camera standards. That would miss the point. In 2021, the important shift was not that every smartphone replaced every larger camera. It was that a phone had become a credible tool for street work, portraiture, architecture, landscapes, macro photography and low-light scenes—and that judges could evaluate the results on visual terms.
The gallery also separates hardware from authorship. Computational processing may influence exposure, dynamic range, color and sharpness, but the source does not reveal how much processing or editing shaped each image. The photographs therefore support a restrained conclusion: mobile tools had become capable enough to participate seriously in photographic culture, while the decisive creative choices still belonged to the photographer.
The larger lesson from the winning gallery
The 2021 Mobile Photography Awards did not prove that phones were universally superior cameras. They offered a more useful challenge to old assumptions. A camera’s availability, the photographer’s attention and the ability to recognize a moment can matter more than the prestige or age of the device.
