Yes—Adobe Fresco’s core drawing and painting tools, including thousands of brushes that were previously premium, are free for everyone. Adobe announced the change on October 23, 2024, and its current plan documentation confirms that the free plan includes all Fresco brushes, imported brushes, Creative Cloud brush and color libraries, and premium shapes.
That does not mean every Adobe service connected to Fresco is free. Premium Adobe Fonts, 100 GB of cloud storage, Photoshop on iPad, and Adobe Portfolio remain benefits of Adobe’s paid Fresco-related plan.

What changed in Adobe Fresco?
Adobe announced on October 23, 2024 that Fresco would become completely free for all users. The most important practical change was the removal of the paywall around thousands of previously premium brushes.
Before this change, Adobe offered a separate premium Fresco option. In a May 2022 announcement, Adobe described that option as costing $9.99 per year and providing premium shapes, brushes, and other features. That historical price should not be treated as current pricing.
The current paid offering is structured differently: it combines Fresco with Photoshop on iPad and other Adobe benefits. In other words, Fresco’s drawing tools are free, while some broader Adobe ecosystem services remain paid.
What is free in Fresco?

This makes the free version substantially more capable than the old free tier. Someone who mainly wants to sketch, paint, illustrate, import custom brushes, or use Fresco’s shape tools does not need a subscription simply to unlock the brush library.

What still costs money?
Premium Adobe Fonts
Fresco’s free brush and shape library should not be confused with Adobe Fonts. Adobe still lists premium Adobe Fonts as a paid-plan benefit. If you need a particular Adobe font inside your artwork, check its licensing and availability rather than assuming that every font is included free.
More cloud storage
The free plan includes 5 GB of cloud storage. The paid plan includes 100 GB. This is cloud storage for Adobe documents and assets—not extra space on your iPad, iPhone, or Windows device.

Adobe’s storage documentation explains that users who reach the free limit must delete older cloud documents or upgrade their storage. “Free app” therefore does not mean unlimited cloud backup.
Photoshop on iPad
Photoshop on iPad is an additional benefit of the paid bundle, not a paid Fresco brush feature. You can use Fresco for free without receiving Photoshop on iPad.
Adobe Portfolio
Adobe Portfolio is also listed among the paid-plan benefits. It matters mainly to artists who want an Adobe-provided portfolio site alongside the creative apps.
Do former Fresco subscribers still need to pay?
If you subscribed only to unlock Fresco’s premium brushes or shapes, it is worth reassessing that subscription. Adobe now lists those tools in the free plan, so a brush-only user may no longer need to pay for Fresco access.

Review the subscription before cancelling if you also rely on Photoshop on iPad, premium Adobe Fonts, Adobe Portfolio, or 100 GB of cloud storage. Cancelling a paid plan can change your storage entitlement even though Adobe says assets created under the paid subscription remain accessible. Existing access to artwork is not the same as continued access to paid storage or premium Fonts.
Subscription pricing and offers vary by country, currency, tax, platform, and account status. Adobe’s current plan page should be treated as the source for any live price; the former $9.99 annual figure is historical.
How to access the free features
- Install or update Adobe Fresco from the relevant app store or Adobe’s Windows distribution.
- Sign in or create an Adobe account if Fresco prompts you to do so.
- Open the brush library and look for the brush categories that were previously marked premium.
- Check the shapes tools and imported-brush options.
- If you still see a subscription prompt, update the app and check whether the prompt concerns Adobe Fonts, cloud storage, Photoshop, or Portfolio rather than Fresco brushes.
Adobe documents the paid upgrade paths as follows:
- iOS: Open Settings in the upper-right corner, choose Account, then Subscription and Upgrade.
- Windows: Open Settings, choose Account, then Subscription and Upgrade. Billing is completed on Adobe.com.
Those controls are for paid benefits such as premium Fonts and 100 GB of storage. They are not required to unlock the main Fresco brush library.

Adobe’s documentation confirms a free plan and its storage allowance, but it does not establish that an Adobe account is unnecessary. Expect Fresco’s current installation or sign-in flow to request an Adobe account if prompted. The exact screens can change between app versions and platforms.

Is Fresco free on iPad, iPhone, and Windows?
Adobe describes Fresco as available on iPad, iPhone, and Windows. The free-access policy applies to Fresco, but feature support and interface details are not necessarily identical across all three platforms. Adobe maintains separate Windows and iOS guidance, so an iPad feature should not automatically be assumed to work in exactly the same way on iPhone or Windows.
Before relying on a particular tool for a production workflow, check Adobe’s current platform-support documentation and keep the app updated. Store listings may continue to mention subscriptions or Photoshop bundles even though Fresco’s drawing app itself is free.
When is the free version enough?
Free Fresco is likely enough if you:
- Primarily sketch, paint, or create digital illustrations.
- Want the formerly premium brushes without a subscription.
- Import custom brushes.
- Use premium shapes.
- Can keep cloud projects within 5 GB.
- Do not need Photoshop on iPad or Adobe Portfolio.
- Do not need premium Adobe Fonts inside Fresco.
When does paying still make sense?
The paid Fresco-related plan is more defensible if you need the Adobe ecosystem rather than more basic painting tools. It may be worthwhile when you need:
- Photoshop on iPad.
- 100 GB of cloud storage.
- Premium Adobe Fonts.
- Adobe Portfolio.
- Integration with other Adobe applications and Creative Cloud services.
Paying does not improve Fresco’s basic brush access according to Adobe’s current plan table. The decision is mainly about storage, Fonts, Photoshop, Portfolio, and the value of the wider Adobe subscription.

Fresco is a strong choice for artists who want a free drawing and painting app with Adobe libraries and workflows. It is less appealing if your priorities are unlimited cloud storage, a one-time purchase model, or avoiding an Adobe account and subscription ecosystem.
Procreate is a major iPad-focused alternative, but it does not provide the same Adobe Fonts, Creative Cloud, Photoshop, or Portfolio integration. Affinity offers professional raster and vector tools outside Adobe’s subscription ecosystem, while Autodesk SketchBook takes a simpler, drawing-first approach across multiple platforms. None is a universal replacement: the best choice depends on whether Adobe integration or subscription independence matters more than the individual brush workflow.
The bottom line
Adobe Fresco’s major paywall is gone. The free plan now covers the core drawing and painting experience, including formerly premium brushes, imported brushes, Creative Cloud brush and color libraries, and premium shapes. You can start using Fresco without paying just to access its creative tools.
The remaining limits are important: free users receive 5 GB of cloud storage, while premium Adobe Fonts, 100 GB of storage, Photoshop on iPad, and Adobe Portfolio remain tied to the paid plan. For brush-focused artists, hobbyists, students, and illustrators, free Fresco is now the logical starting point. Subscribe only if those additional Adobe services justify the cost.
