You cannot reliably prove from a finished image alone that AI did not make it. The strongest case is a credible record of how the work developed: editable source files, progress images or video, earlier studies, and records that connect those materials to the final piece. Even that supports a claim rather than establishing mathematical certainty.
First find out what you are being asked to prove. “I made the visible marks,” “I used no generative AI at any stage,” and “this work is copyrightable” are different claims, with different evidence and rules.
What does “AI didn’t make it” mean?
Before collecting evidence, get the exact rule from the contest, client, gallery, publisher, platform, or legal process. “AI art” can mean a fully generated image, an image containing a generated ingredient, or any work made with AI assistance—including reference, ideation, cleanup, upscaling, or generative fill. A process record can show how you painted; it cannot answer an undefined policy question.

- A human made the final marks. A layered file, process recording, or physical examination may support this narrower claim.
- No generative AI was used anywhere. This includes AI-generated references, drafts, textures, backgrounds, edits, and other ingredients, even if you later painted over them.
- The artist conceived the work without AI assistance. This may depend on a policy’s definition of assistance, not just on what pixels appear in the final image.
- The work qualifies for copyright protection. That is a legal question, not a synonym for “AI-free.”
For example, the U.S. Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 report says AI assistance or generated material in a larger work does not automatically rule out copyright protection. The analysis depends on human-authored expression; prompts alone are not enough. This is a U.S.-specific position, not a universal rule or a contest standard. Read the Copyright Office report.

Why the finished image can’t settle the question
The same final pixels can come from very different histories: a painting made by hand, a human sketch over a generated base, a generated image with manual retouching, or a traditional work altered after scanning. Visual clues such as repeated details, odd anatomy, inconsistent light, or unusual textures may prompt questions, but they are not proof. Human artists can make those choices, and visual inspection cannot reliably identify every kind of AI use.
The more useful question is provenance: what records show this particular work developing, and how well do those records connect to the submitted file? A discussion of a real-world dispute over source files, sketches, and time-lapse evidence illustrates how even substantial evidence can be challenged if the reviewer has not defined what counts in advance. See the case study.
Which evidence carries the most weight?
No single item is conclusive. A combination is more persuasive when it is continuous, independently preserved, specific to the final work, resistant to undetected changes, and easy for a reviewer to inspect.

| Native editable project file | Layers, masks, paths, brushwork, revisions, and a construction process consistent with the final image. | Can be altered or assembled later; may not document references or work done before the file began. |
| Continuous process recording | Visible development from an early state, including the artist and tools at work. | A recording that starts late, has unexplained gaps, or cannot be tied to the final file leaves questions open. |
| Regular progress captures | Milestones such as sketch, line art, color, and corrections. | Selected screenshots do not show what happened between captures and can be fabricated. |
| Earlier studies and sketches | Planning and design decisions that connect to distinctive details in the finished piece. | May support authorship without proving that no AI reference or ingredient was used. |
| Backups, version history, and contemporaneous messages | That related files existed and changed over time, sometimes in records outside the artist’s working file. | A timestamp establishes when a file existed, not who made it or how. |
| Hashes and third-party timestamps | That a specific file’s bytes match a previously recorded version, or existed by a particular time. | Do not establish authorship or human creation. |
| Content Credentials / C2PA | Signed, machine-readable provenance claims and recorded editing actions, when available. | Can be absent or incomplete; records claims, not an independent witness to every creative act. |
| Metadata, detector scores, and visual analysis | Possible supporting clues or leads to investigate. | Weak on their own; absence of metadata or a low detector score does not establish human creation. |
Keep the native file and its real working history
Save the editable project from the application you actually used—whether that is a layered painting file, vector document, 3D scene, or another native format. Retain meaningful layers, masks, paths, selections, brushwork, sketches, corrections, and abandoned alternatives. A coherent working file is easier to assess when its organization reflects the way the piece developed.

Do not manufacture a convincing-looking layer stack after a dispute arises. A flattened generated image can be imported and divided into artificial layers, and an authentic-looking project file can still omit earlier references or ingredients. The file is evidence to weigh alongside other records, not a certificate of origin.
Record the process from an early stage
A process video is strongest when it begins before the work is substantially developed, shows the canvas and relevant tools, captures major forms taking shape, and can be connected to the delivered file. Keep the original recording rather than only an edited time-lapse. If recording continuously is impractical, save regular screenshots or photographs at meaningful milestones: blank or early canvas, rough composition, sketch, line work, color, major rendering, corrections, and export.
A recording need not be an all-day surveillance system. Continuous capture creates storage, privacy, confidentiality, and performance costs, so reserve it for work where the stakes justify the burden. Screenshots are lighter, but leave gaps. In either case, preserve originals and use version history or backups to add independent context where practical.

Preserve studies and the path to the final
Keep sketchbooks, thumbnails, gesture drawings, color studies, physical maquettes, reference photographs, rejected compositions, or preliminary blockouts. Their value is greatest when a reviewer can trace a specific pose, design decision, or correction from an earlier study into the finished painting. If a reference was generated or AI-assisted, record that too; an honest record is more useful than a broad claim that obscures what the policy means.

A practical evidence workflow for artists
- Read and save the rules first. Identify whether they prohibit generated pixels, all generative assistance, or only undisclosed AI use. Keep a dated copy of the policy that applied when you entered or accepted the commission.
- Start a project folder before substantial work. Save the first sketch or early canvas state, studies, reference material, and notes about collaborators or tools.
- Work in an editable native file. Keep meaningful layers and make dated incremental versions rather than overwriting the only copy.
- Preserve independent history. Enable backups or cloud version history where available; retain contemporaneous review files, messages, or private progress posts that connect the work to dates.
- Capture progress proportionately. Save milestone images for routine work; consider a continuous recording for high-stakes work if it is safe and practical.
- Record AI use accurately. Note generated references, ingredients, edits, upscaling, and other assistance, including use you later transformed or painted over. Check the policy’s definitions rather than relying on your own meaning of “hand-painted.”
- Connect the final export to the source. Keep the native file and exported submission, plus any intermediate exports or review versions that show the relationship.
- Inspect any Content Credentials. Preserve the original file and a dated copy of the inspection result if a credential is present.
- Hash key files if the stakes warrant it. Store the hash with a date and a copy of the file in a separate, controlled archive. A hash helps detect later byte changes; it does not prove who created the file.
- Submit only what is required. Retain the complete archive privately. Do not alter, relabel, or recreate evidence after a dispute starts without recording what changed and why.
Optional SHA-256 file hash
A cryptographic hash is a compact fingerprint of a file’s bytes. It can let a reviewer compare a later copy with the one you recorded, but it does not establish when the artwork was made unless the hash was independently recorded at that time, and it never establishes authorship by itself.

What Content Credentials and C2PA can—and can’t—show
C2PA is an open standard for recording provenance information about digital media. Content Credentials can carry signed claims about origin, editing actions, tools, identity, and related ingredients. The official specification site lists version 2.4; the cited explainer is for version 2.2, so its explanation of provenance limitations should not be mistaken for a claim that the two versions are identical. See the C2PA specifications and the C2PA explainer.
A valid credential can help answer who or what signed the record, which creation or editing actions it records, whether generative AI was declared, and whether the file changed after signing. It does not make the artist’s account independently true. C2PA warns that provenance can be incomplete—for example, if a tool changes a file without updating the record—and that provenance alone cannot establish factual truth.
Inspect a credential step by step
- Get the original submitted file if possible, not a screenshot or social-media copy.
- Open it in a compatible Content Credentials viewer, such as Adobe’s Inspect tool.
- Check the signer or issuing organization and the recorded creation and editing actions.
- Look for AI-related declarations and linked ingredients or earlier assets.
- Note gaps, unsupported applications, conversions, or edits made after signing.
- Compare the record with the artist’s native file, studies, and process evidence; preserve the inspection result and date.
Adobe says Firefly assets whose pixels are entirely generated by Firefly can receive Content Credentials identifying the issuer and generative process. That is useful positive provenance for those supported assets, not proof that every unsigned asset is human-made. Adobe explains Firefly Content Credentials.

Keep positive and negative results separate. A valid signed credential can support the specific history it records. “No credential found” means only that no usable credential was found in that file. Metadata may be absent, stripped in conversion or social-media upload, or unsupported by the tools used. C2PA is provenance metadata, not a universal invisible AI watermark.
OpenAI’s verification tool checks for supported C2PA credentials and SynthID signals; OpenAI notes that verification may fail when metadata is removed or altered, the watermark is degraded, or the image predates relevant provenance support. A positive result can indicate supported OpenAI signals; a negative result cannot certify human creation or rule out other AI tools. Use OpenAI’s verifier within those limits; its C2PA guidance provides further context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why an AI detector is not proof
Detectors infer likely origin from statistical or visual patterns. They may be useful as a triage signal, but they are not a creation record and do not reliably answer whether a particular artist used AI at any point. Results can vary with style, training data, model changes, image size, compression, repainting, cropping, or other edits. A detector may miss AI content that was altered, or flag unusual human work.
A score should be attributed to the specific tool and treated as a lead to investigate, not a verdict. It should not be the sole basis for an accusation, disqualification, or refusal of payment. Likewise, “no AI watermark” is not evidence that the work is AI-free.

Evidence for traditional painting, photography, and other work
Traditional painting and drawing
Photograph the work at meaningful stages, including underdrawing, major material layers, corrections, and final details. Preserve preliminary drawings, scans, material records, and studio notes. For high-value work, a continuous studio recording or neutral physical examination may add context. A photo of an artist holding a brush is weak evidence if it does not show the work developing; physical brushwork or impasto can support a claim about the object without proving the source of a copied design or reference.
Photography
For a photograph, evidence should connect capture to delivery. Preserve the original camera RAW file, neighboring frames or burst sequence, capture metadata, contact sheets, ingest records, and the editing catalog or export history. Camera ownership or a video of pressing the shutter does not by itself show that the submitted image is the same capture or document all later edits.
3D, procedural, animation, and collaborative work
Keep editable scenes, models, materials, timelines, procedural scripts, source-control commits, and successive renders where relevant. For animation, preserve project files and representative stages rather than only a final video. In collaborative work, record who contributed which elements and any AI use by each contributor; one person’s process record does not establish the history of everyone’s work.

“Human-made” and “AI-free” are not always synonymous. A policy can treat ideation, reference, generated ingredients, and final-image generation differently. The categories below are practical prompts for asking what must be disclosed; the actual rule controls.
| Use category | Example | Likely policy treatment |
|---|---|---|
| No generative AI | Human drawing, painting, photography, or 3D work | Disclosure depends on the rules; some require an explicit declaration either way. |
| AI used for reference or ideation | Generated pose, mood, or composition study | Often relevant under strict policies, even if no generated pixels remain. |
| AI-assisted editing | Generative fill, object removal, or background replacement | Usually disclose when the policy covers generated edits. |
| AI-generated ingredient | Texture, character, object, or background incorporated into a painting | Disclose the ingredient and explain what you changed. |
| Human transformation of AI output | Substantial repainting, compositing, or redesign of a generated base | Usually disclose both the generated starting material and the human contribution. |
| AI-generated final image | Prompt-to-image output with minor edits | Almost always requires disclosure under rules that address AI-generated work. |
| Conventional automation | Non-generative color adjustment, sharpening, denoising, or selection | Often exempt, but definitions vary. |
What contests, clients, and galleries should ask for
Artists should ask for a written evidence standard before producing extra records or handing over private source files. Institutions can make disputes fairer by:
- Defining permitted and prohibited uses by category, including reference, ideation, editing, and generated ingredients.
- Publishing rules and acceptable evidence before submissions open or work begins.
- Requesting only evidence relevant to the disputed claim and protecting confidential or unreleased material.
- Using a neutral technical reviewer when file provenance is disputed.
- Providing an appeal process and identifying the specific element and standard behind an accusation.
- Rejecting detector scores as sole grounds for disqualification or other penalties.
- Separating the questions of human contribution, AI disclosure, and copyright eligibility.
Requiring every artist to record every minute imposes real storage, privacy, and time costs, particularly on slow or low-margin practices. A reasonable standard should be disclosed in advance and proportionate to the stakes. If you are asked for sensitive source files, clarify who will see them, how they will be stored, what will be examined, and when they will be deleted.
Quick Recap
A checklist before you submit
- Know the exact AI rule and keep a copy of it.
- Retain the native editable file and dated versions.
