Sam Battle’s Googol Counter is a real, modular electronic art project—not a joke or a theoretical design. It uses a chain of decimal counters to represent an almost unimaginable range of numbers. Its creator’s project page currently describes it counting at about 30 kHz, but the claim that it will tick until the universe dies is an ambition, not a guarantee: keeping it powered, repaired, and understood would be the hard part.

What is a googol?

A googol is 10100: a 1 followed by 100 zeroes. It is finite, but so far beyond everyday counting that it is useful mainly for thinking about very large scales. A googolplex is a different, much larger number: 10 raised to the power of a googol.

The word is related to the name Google, but the counter has no connection to Google’s products or infrastructure.

A machine built to make a huge number visible

Sam Battle, the musician and electronics maker behind the Look Mum No Computer channel, built the counter as an ambitious, deliberately persistent piece of engineering and electronic art. Rather than hide the count inside a computer, the project makes its numerical state visible in a physical assembly of display and counter stages. The device also turns some of its activity into sound, as described in Hackster’s technical overview.

Ousmile Digital Tally Counter with Push Button Control, 2.3 Inch Large LED Display, Electronic Lap Counter for Walking, Sports(2-Digit)
  • Bright LED Display: 2.3-inch large LED screen delivers clear, easy-to-read numbers day and night, visible from a distance.
  • Simple & Easy to Use: Big responsive buttons and one-touch reset make operation straightforward—no confusing instructions or complicated settings.
  • Power Off Memory: Remembers last count automatically when turned off, never lose track or need to restart counting.
  • Sturdy Metal Build: Solid metal housing for reliable daily use, designed to hold up well in home, work, and outdoor settings.
  • Versatile Use: Compact design works on desktop or wall-mounted (mounting accessories included). Ideal for laps, workouts, and tally tasks.

This is not a practical way to tally inventory or measure time. Its appeal is the contrast between ordinary electronics and a timescale no person can experience. The point is less to finish counting than to build something that can, with continuing care, outlast its maker.

How the counter works

The basic idea is a decimal carry chain. One stage advances with each incoming count. When it rolls from 9 back to 0, it sends a carry to the next stage, which advances once. That next stage passes a carry onward only after ten of its own advances. In a simple chain, the first stage therefore changes on every count, the second once per ten counts, the third once per hundred, and each higher place moves more slowly still.

Earlier technical reporting describes the project as using 100 individual counter modules, each on its own circuit board, with logic and counter chips rather than a general-purpose computer. A 555 timer appears in that earlier account of the timing design. The modular approach matters: a failed stage can, in principle, be replaced without rebuilding the whole machine or losing the count. Hackster calls the modules “hot-swappable”; that should be understood as a reported design feature, not a guarantee that every repair can be performed without interruption or risk.

  • 【WIDE APPLICATION】:Ideal for lab, people, sport event, golfs, casino, bar, swimming, concert, coach, praty, meeting, restaurant, school, fishing, headcounting, exercises and any occasions where need to be counted for number. In addition to aboves,it still can help children learn to count.
  • 【Great Handy Device to be gifts】:Perfect for sports to keep score; When knitting, No more forgetting which row you was on, especially when your're interrupted by one thing or another; While crocheting, you don't have to take your eyes off your project to find your hand held counter or make a tick mark on paper. Those electronic finger counters are effective, versatile and well worth the money!

Compared with relying on one computer, a chain of dedicated logic avoids dependence on an operating system, storage, and software updates. It does not make the machine immortal. Connections, components, power supplies, and displays can all fail, and a repair must preserve the count and carry behavior accurately.

How fast does it count?

The published speed depends on when the project was described. The creator’s current project page says the counter runs at approximately 30 kHz—about 30,000 counts per second. It also says the 14th digit may advance once or twice during a human lifetime and that reaching the third row will take roughly 10 million years.

By contrast, Hackster and Heise reported about 1 kHz in 2021. Those are historical descriptions of an earlier configuration or way of characterizing the device; the figures should not be collapsed into one supposedly fixed specification. Battle’s project can evolve, and its stages need not all behave like a single uniform clock.

How long would counting to a googol take?

As a simple scale illustration, suppose a counter advanced at one constant rate without stopping. Dividing 10100 by 30,000 counts per second gives about 3.33 × 1095 seconds, or roughly 1.06 × 1088 years using 365.25 days per year. At 1,000 counts per second, the equivalent is about 3.17 × 1089 years.

These are idealized calculations, not predictions of the physical machine’s finish date. The actual project has multiple stages, its early stages do not necessarily map neatly to a single uniform tick rate, and the device may change. There is also a counting-convention wrinkle: a 100-place decimal register can show values from 0 through 10100 − 1. Displaying 10100 itself requires an additional place or a different convention. Calling the project a googol counter is a useful description of its intended scale, not a precise claim that every 100-digit display convention reaches that exact value.

What does “until the universe dies” mean?

The headline evokes the far-future idea of heat death: a state in which usable differences in energy have become unavailable to sustain complex processes. It is not a confirmed date on a cosmic calendar. Very long-term discussions also include theoretical black-hole evaporation and other possible endings, such as a Big Rip, vacuum decay, or recollapse; which scenario applies depends on cosmology and physics that remain uncertain.

So the headline is best read as a scale comparison, not a promise. Some speculative far-future timescales are expressed in numbers around 10100 years, but that does not establish that the universe will end in exactly a googol years—or that this counter will still be operating then. The creator’s page also notes that the clock is deliberately drifting, so the machine should not be mistaken for a precision timekeeper or a device that can reliably forecast when a milestone will occur.

The real long-term challenge is keeping it alive

The counter’s most interesting engineering question is not simply whether it has enough digits. It is whether people can preserve its function: keep power available, maintain timing and carry connections, protect the display, and know how to repair the system. The official project page discusses backup power and a plan to add solar power, as well as ongoing maintenance and upgrades. These are resilience measures, not an unlimited energy source or proof of indefinite operation.

  • Power: Backup systems can bridge some interruptions, but batteries age; solar panels, regulators, and wiring also degrade and need care.
  • Components and repairs: Modular boards make replacement more plausible, but future parts may be unavailable. A substitute must preserve the electrical behavior, not merely fit the board.
  • Environment: Moisture, dust, corrosion, temperature swings, vibration, and electrical interference are realistic hazards long before cosmic timescales matter.
  • Continuity of knowledge: Documentation, custodians, a suitable building, and the means to maintain them are as important as the electronics.
  • Count integrity: A power interruption or repair could lose or corrupt state unless the design handles it. A repair that keeps the displayed number may still change timing or calibration.

Human institutions, buildings, and replacement-part supply are therefore more immediate limits than the universe’s distant fate. “Could keep counting” is fair as an engineering ambition; “will never turn off” would overstate what any physical project can promise.

Where to see the project

The Look Mum No Computer project page is the best place to find Battle’s current description, project details, and any available livestream. Livestream availability can change. Heise reported in 2021 that the counter was to be shown as part of Battle’s Museum of Everything Else project; that is a historical exhibition report, not confirmation of a current venue.

The counter is not a contest against the cosmos that it can realistically win. Its achievement is to turn an abstractly enormous number into a working, audible, repair-minded object—and to make persistence itself a design problem.
