For most iPad owners, Pigment was the best adult coloring-book app in the 2022 comparison. It combined the closest paper-like freehand experience with Apple Pencil support and a broad selection of pages. Choose Lake for curated independent-artist artwork, Colorfy for quick tap-to-fill coloring, Recolor for catalog breadth and community features, or Colorest for coloring mixed with expressive drawing.
This is a historical 2022 buying guide. The source list was published by iMore on December 4, 2021, under a forward-looking “in 2022” headline. Current App Store details cited below were checked on August 18, 2026; they show present availability and claims, not necessarily what each app offered or charged in 2022.
What “coloring book” means on an iPad
These apps do not all deliver the same activity. A digital coloring book may offer:
- Freehand coloring: You use pencils, markers, paint, or watercolor brushes on prepared line art.
- Tap-to-fill coloring: Select a color and tap enclosed regions. It is fast and beginner-friendly, but less like using physical pencils.
- Paint-by-number or pixel coloring: More game-like and structured than a traditional coloring book.
- Social coloring: You color, publish, browse, and interact with other users’ work.
- Freeform drawing: Apps such as Procreate can import line art, but do not primarily provide a ready-made adult coloring library.
“Best” therefore depends on whether you want tactile Apple Pencil strokes, effortless completion, a carefully edited art collection, or an endless social catalog.

Quick recommendations
| App | Best for | Coloring style | Apple Pencil | Free access | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pigment | Best overall | Freehand, realistic tools | Strong; pressure and direction controls listed | Limited pages/tools | Premium content is subscription-based |
| Lake | Artist-drawn artwork | Freehand watercolor, shading and blending | Supported | Limited selection | Curated library and subscription model |
| Colorfy | Beginners and quick sessions | Tap-to-fill with brush options | More basic | Free download and some access | Less tactile and more game-like |
| Recolor | Variety and community | Mixed coloring tools | Check your version | Free download with purchases | Large catalog and social features can distract |
| Colorest | Coloring plus drawing effects | Freehand pencils and decorative effects | Explicitly supported | Limited | Smaller ecosystem and library evidence |
| Colorgram | Additional simple option | Historical workflow needs verification | Verify by version | Verify | Current status and 2022 pricing are unclear |
1. Pigment — best overall
Pigment was the strongest all-round recommendation in the original comparison because it behaves most like coloring on paper. Its tool set includes pencils, markers, airbrushes, watercolors and oil-paint-style tools, allowing both flat fills and gradual shading.
The current U.S. App Store listing says Pigment works with a finger, Apple Pencil and third-party styluses. For Apple Pencil, it advertises pressure, direction and stroke-size adjustments. That makes it the best fit for users who want to vary line weight, blend colors and deliberately color outside the lines rather than simply tap enclosed areas.
Choose Pigment if
- You own an Apple Pencil and want pressure-sensitive freehand strokes.
- You want mandalas, portraits, grayscale pages and other varied subjects.
- You value brush behavior more than the simplest possible interface.
Trade-offs
The extensive tool set can feel excessive for a casual user, and much of the library is paid. The current U.S. listing shows $4.99 weekly, $9.99 monthly and $59.99 annual purchase entries, with a stated seven-day trial. These are August 2026 prices, not verified 2022 prices, and App Store terms can vary by country.
Verdict: Start here if “digital colored pencils on an iPad” is what you mean by an adult coloring book.
2. Lake — best for curated artist artwork
Lake is the better choice when illustration quality and a calm, edited collection matter more than having every possible category. Its current description says it features hand-drawn work from more than 100 independent artists, over 1,500 exclusive drawings and more than 700 color shades. Those are developer-stated current figures, not audited 2022 measurements.

- Wander Book: A woodland-theme coloring book funny enough to make you giggle while you relax. Featuring animals, nature vibes and funny gems. Nature’s never been so bold!

- Ultimate Gift: Surprise a loved one with this unique, simple mindfulness coloring book for women. Packed with funny phrases and gorgeous designs, it’s the ideal pick for whenever you want to send a dose of laughter, calm and creativity their way
Lake supports Apple Pencil and offers watercolor, spray-paint, opacity, shading and blending effects. It also allows coloring inside or outside the lines. The listing currently claims offline use, iCloud syncing and at least monthly new content.
Recommended Free Tools
Lake’s current iPad listing requires iPadOS 18 or later. That is a 2026 compatibility fact and must not be treated as the requirement for the 2022 edition.
Trade-offs
The curated style will not suit everyone, and most of the collection is subscription-gated. The current U.S. listing displays several entries, including $2.99 weekly, $9.99 monthly and yearly prices of $39.99 or $59.99; apparent legacy entries mean you should confirm the active offer in the app. Lake’s terms say a free trial can automatically convert to a paid annual subscription when it ends.
Verdict: Pick Lake for distinctive independent-artist pages and a less overwhelming experience.
3. Colorfy — best for beginners and tap-to-fill coloring
Colorfy is designed for low-friction coloring. Its listing describes selecting a palette and tapping regions, with multiple brush types and categories such as mandalas, flowers, animals, gardens, cats and famous paintings. It claims more than 1,000 pictures and offline operation.

- Ultimate & Unique Best Friend Gift: Surprise a loved one with this unique coloring book for women. Packed with funny phrases and gorgeous designs, it’s the ideal pick for whenever you want to send a dose of laughter, calm and creativity their way
This workflow is excellent for a five-minute relaxation session or for someone who finds brush controls intimidating. It is less suitable if the point of owning an Apple Pencil is to make expressive, pressure-sensitive strokes.
Colorfy is free to download with in-app purchases. The available evidence does not provide a clean, authoritative current price comparison, so check the App Store before subscribing.
Verdict: Choose Colorfy when ease and speed matter more than a realistic pencil experience.
4. Recolor — best for maximum variety and community
Recolor targets users who want a huge selection and a social layer. Its current U.S. App Store description claims more than 5,000 pages, professional-artist designs spanning mandalas, florals, animals, portraits, fantasy and fashion, and a community of more than 50 million colorists. These are developer marketing claims and may change.
The breadth is useful if you quickly exhaust a small collection or enjoy browsing other people’s work. It can also make the app feel busy, and social features are not ideal for someone seeking a private, quiet activity. The current listing is age-rated 13+, unlike several competitors rated 4+.
Rank #4
Recolor is a free download with in-app purchases; a reliable current price was not established in the supplied evidence. Apple Pencil behavior should be confirmed for the version installed on your iPad rather than inferred from generic iPad compatibility.
Verdict: Select Recolor for an enormous, frequently refreshed-feeling catalog and community interaction.

Colorest occupies a niche between coloring book and drawing app. Its listing describes several pencil sets, Apple Pencil support, glitter pencils and rainbow-pencil effects, alongside prepared coloring pages.

It is appealing if you want decorative or playful strokes rather than only conventional colored-pencil simulation. However, the feature set can feel more whimsical than meditative, and its much smaller rating count provides less evidence of broad adoption than Pigment, Lake, Colorfy or Recolor.
The current U.S. listing shows $19.99 annually and $7.99 every three months, plus individual pencil-set purchases. Those are current price signals, not historical 2022 terms.
Verdict: Choose Colorest when drawing freedom and special pencil effects are central to the experience.
6. Colorgram — historical honorable mention
Colorgram appeared in iMore’s original 2022 list, so it belongs in the historical record. The available evidence does not establish a dependable current U.S. listing, a complete 2022 feature set or an exact 2022 price. A third-party press document mentions a $2.99-per-week premium subscription, but that document alone cannot prove the App Store terms.

How to choose in two minutes
- Want paper-like freehand coloring? Choose Pigment; choose Lake if curated artist pages matter more.
- Want to tap and finish quickly? Choose Colorfy.
- Want thousands of subjects or a social community? Choose Recolor.
- Want coloring mixed with drawing and decorative effects? Choose Colorest.
- Want to create or import your own line art? Consider Procreate. It is an advanced art tool, not a direct replacement for a ready-made coloring library.
Apple Pencil and iPad compatibility checklist
“Supports Apple Pencil” can mean anything from tapping buttons to pressure-sensitive freehand strokes. Before committing, check:
- Whether your iPad model supports the Pencil generation you own.
- Whether pressure, palm rejection and stroke-size controls work in the app.
- Whether coloring is freehand, tap-to-fill or both.
- The app’s current minimum iPadOS version. Requirements change; Lake’s iPadOS 18 requirement is current, not historical evidence about 2022.
- Whether pages and brushes download for offline use.
Subscription and privacy checks
Free downloads often expose only a small number of pages or tools. Before starting a trial, read the offer screen and confirm:
- Trial length and the exact renewal price.
- Whether billing renews weekly, monthly or annually.
- Whether cancellation must be completed through Apple’s Subscriptions settings before the trial ends.
- Whether cancellation removes premium pages or only prevents new access.
- Whether an account is required, pages can be exported, and offline use is supported.
- Whether the app’s age rating and social features suit the intended user.
Prices vary by region and can change without notice. Current App Store pages may also show legacy in-app-purchase entries, so do not treat every displayed amount as the single active plan.

For the historical 2022 market, the ranking remains straightforward: Pigment for the best overall paper-like experience, Lake for curated artwork, Colorfy for beginners, Recolor for breadth and community, and Colorest for coloring plus drawing. Colorgram is worth mentioning, but its historical and current details require verification.
