For most single-person portraits, start with a 60 × 90 cm (2 × 3 ft) rectangular softbox with removable diffusion and an optional grid. It is large enough for soft head-and-shoulder light at close range without being as cumbersome or power-hungry as a 3 × 4 ft box. The best choice still depends on your light’s mount and whether you need a studio modifier or a quick-fold location option.

Our strongest picks are system-specific: the Profoto RFi 2 × 3 ft for a Profoto studio, the Profoto OCF 2 × 3 ft for portable Profoto setups, and the Elinchrom Rotalux Rectangle for photographers who need a choice of mount adapters. A rectangular box is not inherently more flattering than an octabox; size, distance, angle, diffusion and spill control matter more than the outline alone.

What a rectangular softbox does

A rectangular softbox is a fabric-sided modifier with a reflective interior, a front diffusion panel and usually an inner baffle. Rods hold it open around a mounting ring, or speedring, which connects the modifier to a compatible light. Some designs fold quickly; others use a conventional rod-and-ring assembly. A grid may attach over the front to limit spill.

amaran Light Box 30120 Softbox,Quick-Setup Narrow Rectangular Softbox
  • 30x120cm (1x4ft) one-snap setup narrow rectangular Bowens Mount softbox
  • Narrow design for portrait photography, full-body content, or clean edge lights and reflections
  • One-snap, faster and easier setup in one second
  • Slim and space-saving flat-pack design
  • Universal Bowens Mount: Compatible with amaran COBs and other Bowens Mount fixtures up to 600W

Rectangular portrait boxes commonly mean formats such as 2 × 3 ft or 3 × 4 ft. A long, narrow 1 × 4 ft modifier is also rectangular, but it is a strip box with a different job: rim or edge light, narrow side light, or a long controlled highlight. It is usually not the first choice for broad main light on a face.

Why the shape can work well for portraits

Softness depends chiefly on how large the source appears from the subject’s position. Profoto’s softbox guidance explains that a light source becomes softer as it grows relative to the subject. Moving a box closer therefore often softens shadow transitions, but also increases falloff across the subject and may require an exposure adjustment.

A broad rectangular face can wrap light around facial contours when brought close, and its vertical orientation naturally suits a head-and-shoulders composition. Turn it horizontal for a seated portrait, a couple, or a wider frame. The shape also gives a window-like catchlight: vertical or horizontal, depending on orientation. That is an aesthetic choice, not a guarantee of flattering light.

Feathering helps control the result. Instead of pointing the box’s brightest center straight at the face, rotate it so the subject receives light nearer the front edge. This can reduce direct spill and preserve contrast. A grid further narrows the spread, helping keep light off a wall or background; it does not make the source larger or inherently softer.

Best rectangular softboxes by use

Profoto RFi Rectangular 2 × 3 ft: best studio choice for Profoto owners

The RFi 2 × 3 ft is the sensible default for a Profoto studio that values a modular setup. It is a versatile 60 × 90 cm size for headshots and head-and-shoulders portraits, and the RFi system supports several Profoto battery- and mains-powered heads. A rectangular grid and flat-front diffuser are listed as optional accessories.

Godox UL-60x90 Rectangular Softbox with Bowens Mount, Quick Release Design
  • 【Versatile Large Surface】 The large rectangular surface area provides a soft, wrap-around light, making it the best choice for interviews, YouTubers, and live streamers.
  • 【Umbrella-Style Quick Release】 Even at larger sizes, the umbrella mechanism ensures one-person assembly is fast and pain-free.
  • 【Professional Studio Results】 Delivers uniform light distribution with minimal hotspots, ensuring professional-grade results for every shoot.
  • 【Comprehensive Kit】 Ships with a honeycomb grid and carrying bag, providing everything you need for mobile or studio lighting.
  • 【Wide Compatibility】 The Bowens Mount ensures it fits perfectly on popular lights like the Godox Bowens Mount Led Video Light, and other brands LED lights.

Important cost detail: the RFi Speedring is separate, and a non-Profoto light needs the appropriate ring for its mount. Confirm that the selected ring and fixture are compatible before ordering. The listed softbox price alone is not the price of a ready-to-use system.

Profoto OCF Rectangular 2 × 3 ft: best portable Profoto option

The OCF 2 × 3 ft is aimed at location work: its color-coded rods and compact folding construction are intended to make setup and packing easier than a conventional studio assembly. It suits portraits on location when used with an appropriate Profoto OCF setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat OCF as a universal mount. Profoto recommends this softbox only for flat-front lights, lists a maximum flash rating of 750 Ws, and warns against use with Profoto flashes that have halogen modeling lamps because of heat. Check the exact light and any required OCF Speedring or compatible setup. Quick folding does not remove the need for a stable stand outdoors.

Profoto Softbox Rectangular 2 × 3 ft Silver: best premium integrated setup

The Profoto Softbox Rectangular in the 2 × 3 ft silver variant has an integrated speedring and a quick fold/unfold design. It is a premium workflow choice for a Profoto user who values a dedicated, fast-to-deploy modifier more than mount flexibility.

Its US page showed $449 for the selected variant in August 2026. That price does not mean it will make a portrait proportionally softer than a less expensive box of the same size: source size, placement and diffusion dominate softness. A fixed integrated system is also less compelling if you regularly move modifiers among brands.

Elinchrom Rotalux Rectangle 90 × 110 cm: best cross-mount studio option

The Rotalux Rectangle is a larger 90 × 110 cm box for portrait and product work. Elinchrom lists speedrings for multiple systems, including Elinchrom, Profoto, Bowens S, Broncolor, Hensel and Profoto OCF. This makes it worth considering in a mixed-brand studio, but it is not mount-universal without the correct ring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ring is a separate system choice: select the one that matches the exact light. Elinchrom describes the modifier as producing soft, even light with natural falloff, but that is manufacturer positioning rather than an independent comparative test. The retrieved official listing did not establish a current price.

Profoto Rectangular 3 × 4 ft White: best large premium source

The 3 × 4 ft white option gives more front area for full-length portraits, fashion, larger subjects or a broad source set farther away. Its larger apparent size at a given distance can help create softer, more even coverage than a smaller box, provided the light has enough output and the space can accommodate it.

The trade-offs are real: more support leverage, more wind load, more room and potentially more flash output, especially through multiple diffusion layers. Profoto’s US page showed $549 for the selected variant in August 2026. It is often excessive for a tight headshot in a small room.

Elinchrom Rotalux Go Recta 55 × 75 cm: compact option

The Rotalux Go Recta measures 55 × 75 cm, about 22 × 30 in, and is a compact choice for travel, close portraits and small spaces. The product family includes optional adapters such as a Profoto adapter; identify the required adapter for your light before purchase. Its smaller apparent source offers less wrap at the same distance and makes it a weaker choice for full-length portraits.

Which size should you buy?

Portrait use Starting size Why and what to watch
Tight headshot Small box or 2 × 3 ft close in A small source can give more defined shadows; a 2 × 3 ft box close to the face can stay soft while remaining manageable.
Head-and-shoulders 60 × 90 cm / 2 × 3 ft Best all-round starting size for one person and a small studio.
Three-quarter portrait 2 × 3 ft close, or roughly 90 × 110 cm The larger box gives more even coverage if you must place it farther away; consider output and room.
Full-length or fashion About 90 × 110–120 cm / 35 × 43 in to 3 × 4 ft More vertical coverage can reduce the difference in illumination from head to body, but distance and light placement still matter.
Two-person portrait Larger 3 × 4 ft class, or another broad source Need enough source width and careful positioning for both faces; a grid may limit useful spread.

These are starting points, not coverage guarantees. Subject distance, room size, desired contrast and flash output all change the practical result. Larger is not automatically better: it can be softer and more even, but also harder to control, more demanding on the light and support, and unwieldy in wind.

Interior, diffusion and grids

White versus silver interior

As a general design tendency, a white interior gives a gentler, often lower-contrast quality, while silver tends to return light more efficiently and can look punchier. The actual difference depends on the specific construction and setup; these are not guaranteed measured outcomes for every product. White can suit close, forgiving headshots. Silver may be useful when output is limited or the modifier is larger, but feather it carefully if the result looks too contrasty.

One diffusion panel or two?

Many boxes have an inner baffle and an outer diffusion panel. Using both usually helps even out illumination across the front; using one panel can retain more output and give a somewhat punchier look. Removable panels let you choose. Install them evenly: a twisted or poorly seated panel can create visible brightness variation. Exact light loss varies by model and configuration, so avoid assuming a universal percentage.

When to add a grid

A grid is useful when you need to keep light off the background or nearby walls, preserve shadow on the far side of the face, or feather a key across the subject without lighting the whole room. It is less useful when you want broad spread for several people or when flags and room control already contain the light. Check that the grid is made for the specific softbox; Profoto lists rectangular grids for its RFi and rectangular systems.

Rectangle, octabox or strip box?

  • Choose a rectangle for a window-like catchlight, vertical subjects, full-length coverage, and directional feathering along a face or torso.
  • Choose an octabox if a rounder catchlight and symmetrical wrap are the visual priority. It can also be a classic portrait key. Profoto distinguishes its rectangular boxes as versatile and window-like, while noting the round catchlights of octas in its shape guide.
  • Choose a strip box for rim or hair light, a narrow side highlight, or controlled separation from the background—not as the default broad facial key. Profoto likewise identifies strip softboxes with rim lighting and long highlights.

Catchlight shape is part of the portrait style: rectangle for a window-like mark, octagon for a rounded one, strip for a narrow graphic line. A grid primarily controls spill; by itself it does not change the source’s shape or soften the light.

  • 【Easy Access Zipper】 Includes a side zipper opening that allows you to reach the light source easily without dismantling the front diffuser panels.

Check the mount before the dimensions

A softbox brand does not guarantee that it fits every light from that brand—or any light with a similarly named mount. Before buying, identify the exact light model and answer these questions:

  1. What mount does the light use? It might be Bowens S, Profoto, Elinchrom, Profoto OCF or a proprietary system.
  2. Is the speedring included? Conventional modular boxes often need a separately purchased ring or adapter.
  3. Can the ring be changed? A replaceable ring can help when equipment changes, but confirm that the manufacturer offers one for the intended mount.
  4. Does the fixture physically fit? A nominally compatible mount may not provide enough clearance around every head or LED fixture.
  5. Is the modifier approved for your light source? Flash, LED and halogen lamps create different heat conditions. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list and any lamp wattage limit.

Pay particular attention to the distinction between ordinary Profoto RFi compatibility and the portable OCF system. Profoto’s OCF product page includes model, output and heat restrictions; the OCF softbox is not suitable for Profoto flashes with halogen modeling lights. Do not infer heat safety from mechanical fit.

Set up a flattering portrait key

Use this as a starting arrangement, then adjust to the face, lens framing and desired shadow:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the box roughly 30–45 degrees to one side of the subject.
  2. Raise it slightly above eye level and angle it down toward the face.
  3. Bring it close enough to appear large from the subject’s position, while keeping it out of frame.
  4. Rotate it so the front edge, rather than the center, lights the face; this is feathering.
  5. Set key exposure before adding a reflector or second light.

For gentler shadows, move the source closer, consider the larger size if your room and flash allow it, use more diffusion or a white interior, and avoid an extremely lateral angle. A white reflector opposite or below the key can lift shadows.

For more sculpted facial definition, move the light farther to the side, feather more strongly, or use a grid to contain spill. A silver interior or one diffusion layer may retain a punchier quality if the box allows that configuration. Watch for deep eye sockets and a harsh nose shadow rather than assuming more contrast is always better.

For full-length work, orient a larger box vertically and watch the falloff from head to feet. Raising it and feathering downward can help, but the inverse-square falloff still matters; a reflector or second fill source may be needed if the lower body becomes too dark.

Common problems and fixes

  • The face still looks harsh: The box may be too small or too far away, the center may be aimed directly at the face, or an outer diffusion panel may be missing or unevenly installed. Check for competing ambient shadows too.
  • The background is washed out: Add a compatible grid, move the box closer and feather it, turn it away from the background, increase subject-to-background distance, or use flags or black fabric.
  • The box seems too dim: Check whether both diffusion panels are installed, whether the light has enough output, and whether the box is too large or too far from the subject. Inspect the baffle and front panel for incorrect placement. Removing diffusion may add output, but do not do it automatically if the resulting light is less suitable.
  • The box will not mount: Verify the speedring and adapter, seat rods evenly, confirm the modifier supports the light, and check that the fixture’s front profile has clearance.
  • The stand tips or flexes: Use a sturdier stand, shorten the boom, add a counterweight or sandbag, lower the modifier, and keep the stand leg beneath the load when possible.

Support and outdoor safety

A 3 × 4 ft box creates more leverage and wind load than a small headshot modifier. Match the stand to the combined weight of the light, ring and softbox; use a substantial stand for larger boxes, and add a counterweight on a boom. Sandbag the stand indoors as appropriate. Outdoors, use an assistant, keep the setup low when conditions call for it, and collapse the modifier between shots if wind picks up. Never leave a large softbox unattended in wind or assume a quick-fold design makes it safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare the real cost

Compare complete working setups, not just the headline modifier price. Depending on the design, the required extras may include a speedring or adapter, a grid, replacement diffusion, a suitable stand, a boom and counterweight, or a carrying case. Buy a grid only if spill control solves a real problem; buy the correct speedring first, because the wrong one can make the softbox unusable. For location portraits, a reflector or black flag can also solve fill or spill problems without adding another powered light.

Final recommendations

  • Profoto studio owner: start with the modular RFi 2 × 3 ft and budget for the correct speedring.
  • Profoto location photographer: choose the OCF 2 × 3 ft only if your exact light meets its compatibility, power and heat limits.
  • Fast premium Profoto workflow: consider the integrated-speedring 2 × 3 ft rectangular model.
  • Mixed-brand studio: consider the Elinchrom Rotalux Rectangle, selecting the exact mount-specific ring.
  • Full-length portraits: move to roughly 90 × 110–120 cm or 3 × 4 ft if room, output and support permit.
  • Travel or a small room: a compact 55 × 75 cm class is easier to manage, with less coverage for full-body work.
