Short answer: Affinity’s six-month free trial was a genuine promotion for Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher, but it is not the current offer. Canva’s newer, unified Affinity application is now presented as free forever for everyone. You need a free Canva account to download or activate it; a Canva Premium subscription is optional for additional Canva AI features.
This distinction matters if you found an old trial page, video or search result while looking for a cheaper alternative to Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign.
What the six-month trial actually was
Affinity did advertise an official, no-strings-attached six-month trial of its then-separate applications: Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher. It was not a coupon-site invention. Some people who had previously tried the software could also qualify.

Archived announcements, 2024 videos and old Serif pages can still appear in search, which is why the headline “Affinity six month free trial now available” is misleading in 2026. Do not follow old instructions telling you to enter payment details, cancel after six months or buy an old V2 license to obtain the current app.

What Affinity offers now
Canva launched a new unified Affinity application in late October 2025. Instead of three separate programs, one app combines three workspaces:
- Vector: Illustrator-style drawing, logos, icons, typography and branding.
- Pixel: Photoshop-style retouching, compositing, adjustments and raster editing.
- Layout: InDesign-style page composition for reports, brochures and multi-page documents.
Canva describes features including non-destructive adjustments, RAW development, live filters, batch processing, master pages, shared text styles, advanced typography, GPU acceleration and customizable studios. Those are Canva’s stated capabilities, not independent performance-test results.
Canva’s current announcement calls the core application “completely free” and “free forever.” Treat that as Canva’s present product positioning, not a legally guaranteed promise that every future feature or service will always remain free.

How to download Affinity today
- Use the official Canva Affinity announcement or the current Affinity download link from Canva.
- Sign in with an existing Canva account, or create a free Canva account.
- Download and activate the application for your supported operating system.
- Use the core Affinity tools without purchasing an Affinity subscription or the old V2 perpetual license.
At launch, Canva listed Mac and Windows and described iPad as coming soon. Platform availability, minimum operating-system versions and iPad support may have changed, so check the live download page before installing. A free application can still require an account, which may matter to privacy-sensitive users, schools and organizations with centralized software policies.
Does Affinity require Canva Pro?
No—not for the core application, according to Canva. Canva Premium is relevant to optional Canva AI functionality inside Affinity. Canva specifically lists Generative Fill, Expand & Edit and Remove Background through Canva AI Studio for Premium users.

Canva says the core product is free while it can monetize premium content, collaboration and AI services. That is different from calling Affinity a disguised Canva Pro trial.

Affinity versus Adobe: what can actually be replaced?

The accurate conclusion is that Affinity can replace some of Adobe’s core design applications, but it does not reproduce the entire Creative Cloud ecosystem. Adobe remains the safer choice when your work depends on Lightroom catalogs, video, motion graphics, Adobe Stock, shared libraries, enterprise administration, Adobe-specific automation or a large plug-in ecosystem.
File compatibility: useful, not perfect
Canva says Affinity can import or work with PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, IDML and other formats. That is valuable for migration, but format support does not mean identical round-tripping.
Opening a file successfully can still leave missing fonts, changed text reflow, substituted or flattened layers, altered effects, broken links, different blend behavior, color discrepancies or unsupported plug-ins. IDML may assist an InDesign migration without behaving exactly like InDesign. AI support should be tested against the precise Illustrator documents and production features you use.

A safe Adobe-to-Affinity migration test
- Make copies of several real PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF and IDML projects.
- Check fonts, linked assets, masks, blend modes, effects, transparency and color management.
- Export in the formats your clients, printers and collaborators require.
- Inspect exports at 100 percent and, where relevant, with a print proof.
- Recreate one normal client project from start to finish.
- Test batch processing, macros, scripts, shortcuts and repetitive tasks.
- Check every plug-in, action or automation dependency.
- Confirm that collaborators can open and edit the resulting files.
- Compare keyboard shortcuts and customize the workspace for daily use.
- Keep Adobe active until representative projects pass—not merely until one file opens.
Existing V2 customers and the old license model
The former V2 products used perpetual licenses, and Affinity’s legacy support documentation says that software without a purchased perpetual license ran as a seven-day trial. That historical behavior should not be confused with either the six-month promotion or the current unified application.
Existing V2 buyers should distinguish their old license, projects and activation process from the Canva-era product. Do not assume every old feature, plug-in, file or activation workflow transfers unchanged, and do not buy V2 merely to obtain the current free application.

Privacy and Canva-account considerations
Canva says Affinity stores work locally on your device and that Affinity content—including content created with Canva AI tools inside Affinity—is not used to train or develop its AI features. Canva also says users control when they export or upload work to Canva and can review data preferences in Canva settings.

Those are Canva’s statements, not an unconditional legal guarantee. Before using Affinity for confidential client work, review the current Canva explanation of the free model, terms, privacy policy, AI terms and any enterprise or team controls. Pay particular attention to permissions requested at account creation and to what happens when a file is deliberately uploaded to Canva services.
Who should switch—and who should not?
Affinity is a strong fit if you:
- Mainly need Photoshop-, Illustrator- or some InDesign-style work.
- Want to avoid a recurring subscription for the core design application.
- Work on supported desktop hardware and can learn a different interface.
- Exchange standard files such as PSD, PDF, SVG, TIFF or IDML.
- Do not depend heavily on Adobe-only plug-ins, cloud libraries or team infrastructure.
- Prefer local files and a free core application.
Stay with Adobe if you:
- Need Premiere Pro, After Effects, Lightroom or the complete Creative Cloud suite.
- Rely on Adobe-specific scripts, actions, plug-ins, fonts, libraries or review tools.
- Work in a studio where native Adobe files and established automation are mandatory.
- Need maximum compatibility with complex Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign production files.
- Require mature enterprise administration and collaboration systems.
Use a hybrid setup if you:
- Can do most design work in Affinity but occasionally need Adobe compatibility.
- Want to replace Photoshop or Illustrator while retaining Lightroom.
- Are migrating a team gradually or must still deliver native Adobe files.
Bottom line
The six-month Affinity trial was real, but it is a historical promotion—not the offer readers should claim now. The current Canva-era Affinity app is presented as free indefinitely for everyone, with a free Canva account required for access and optional Premium AI features. It is a serious alternative for Photoshop-, Illustrator- and some InDesign-style work, especially for students, hobbyists, freelancers and small businesses. It is not a one-app replacement for video, motion, Lightroom, Adobe’s cloud ecosystem or deeply standardized enterprise workflows. Test copies of real projects before cancelling Adobe.
