To turn a landscape Canva design into a portrait one, use Resize (sometimes shown as Resize & Magic Switch), choose Custom size, and swap the width and height—for example, 1920 × 1080 px becomes 1080 × 1920 px. If Resize isn’t available on your account, make a new portrait design and copy the elements across. Canva doesn’t provide a simple page-rotation button, and changing the canvas won’t necessarily produce a finished portrait layout.
Change the design with Resize
- Open the landscape design in Canva.
- In the editor, select Resize or Resize & Magic Switch. The wording and toolbar placement can vary by editor version and device.
- Choose Custom size.
- Enter portrait dimensions by making the height greater than the width. To reverse a 1920 × 1080 px design, enter 1080 × 1920 px.
- Choose Copy and resize to make a separate portrait version, or Resize this design to change the current design.
- Review the result, adjust the layout, and download the portrait version.
Canva’s orientation instructions describe changing orientation by using Resize and swapping the dimensions. Its image-resizer guide currently refers to the editor control as “Resize & Magic Switch.”
Choose “Copy and resize” to keep the original
For most projects, choose Copy and resize. It preserves the landscape file, gives you a fallback if the new layout needs substantial work, and lets you keep both versions for different uses. Rename the new file something clear, such as “Project Name – Portrait.” Use Resize this design only if you no longer need the landscape version or have already made a duplicate. If you resize the original by mistake, Canva’s orientation help points to version history as a recovery option.

Portrait simply means the canvas is taller than it is wide. Swapping dimensions reverses an existing aspect ratio, but it does not guarantee the result is the right size for a platform, print job, or client brief.

Common portrait formats include 9:16 for Stories or vertical video, and often 4:5 for portrait social posts, depending on the platform. A flyer or poster should use the printer’s specified trim size and bleed. A portrait presentation may use 9:16 or another custom size. Check the destination’s current requirements before choosing dimensions; “portrait” alone doesn’t identify a single standard size.
What if you’re using Canva Free?
Canva lists automated Resize availability for Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Education, and Canva for Nonprofits; its help page says the feature is not supported in Canva Docs. Plan eligibility and product labels can change, so check the controls available in your account. Canva’s pricing page identifies Resize as a premium tool.

If Resize isn’t available, create a separate design with the intended portrait dimensions, then transfer and arrange the content manually:

- Open the landscape design in another browser tab.
- Copy its elements and paste them into the new design. If selection is difficult, unlock objects or ungroup them as needed.
- Rebuild the composition for the taller canvas, then inspect each page before exporting.
This approach works best when the design is simple. Multi-page files, locked or grouped objects, backgrounds, and elements inside frames may take more time to transfer and repair. If a portrait layout requires a different hierarchy, rebuilding it deliberately may be better than trying to preserve the landscape arrangement.
Fix the layout after resizing
A landscape design usually cannot be turned into a polished portrait design by changing dimensions alone. Canva attempts to adapt the design, but text, crops, and spacing still need a visual check.
- Text: Check for clipping, hidden text, awkward wraps, and poor line breaks. Adjust text-box size and position; reduce font size only when necessary.
- Images: Use Crop or double-click an image to reposition what appears in the frame. Replace a wide image if the portrait crop loses important content. Don’t stretch people, logos, or products out of proportion.
- Backgrounds: Extend the background to cover the new page edges, or choose a portrait-oriented replacement. For print, check edge coverage and any required bleed.
- Spacing and alignment: Re-center the main content, restore a clear visual hierarchy, and keep important material within safe margins. Use Canva’s position and alignment controls as needed.
- Groups and locked objects: Unlock or ungroup items that won’t fit or move independently. Regroup only after the new arrangement is stable.
- Multiple pages: Inspect every page. A design-level resize may affect all pages rather than just the one you’re viewing; Canva’s multi-page resize API documentation says all pages are resized.
Before sharing or printing, download the file and inspect the exported PNG, JPG, or PDF as well as the editor preview. Look for clipped text, unexpected crops, blank edges, and any layout changes that are easier to spot in the final file.

Change an element’s direction, not the page
If you only need to turn one image, text box, shape, or video, don’t resize the whole design. Select the element and drag its rotation handle. For an exact angle, open Position and enter a value under Rotate. Canva explains element rotation separately in its flip and rotate help. Rotating an object does not change the page orientation.

Open the design in the Canva app and look for Resize or Resize & Magic Switch in the editor controls or overflow menu. If the option is available, choose Custom size, swap width and height, and select the copy or current-design option. If you can’t find it, use the new-design-and-copy workaround. Button placement can differ by app version, screen size, and account plan, so the labels may not match desktop exactly.

Why can’t I find Resize?
- You’re editing a Canva Doc: Canva says the standard Resize feature is not supported in Docs. Create a regular design with portrait dimensions instead.
- The account doesn’t include the feature: Canva lists Resize for Pro, Teams, Education, and Nonprofits. A new portrait design with manual transfer is the workaround when the control is unavailable.
- The label has changed: Look for Resize & Magic Switch, then choose Resize.
- You’re on mobile: The control may be elsewhere in the app or unavailable in the current view. Try the desktop browser editor if practical.
- The layout changes across pages: Check every page after resizing; don’t assume only the selected page changed.
