Yes—Affinity is a powerful free Photoshop alternative for Mac and Windows. Canva’s unified desktop app brings serious photo editing together with vector design and page layout, and the core application is free. But “free” does not mean account-free, and Affinity is not a perfect replacement for every Photoshop workflow: complex PSDs, Adobe plugins, Lightroom catalogs, and team processes all deserve a test before you switch.
What is Affinity?
Affinity is a desktop creative application from Canva, relaunched in October 2025 as a unified app combining capabilities previously sold as Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, and Affinity Publisher. Its three integrated work areas are Pixel for raster and photo work, Vector for illustration and design, and Layout for page-based documents. Canva describes the app and its capabilities in its Affinity announcement.
That makes Affinity broader than a Photoshop clone. It can cover parts of workflows that might otherwise involve Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. It is still a separately installed desktop application—not simply Canva’s browser-based template editor—but Canva account activation and optional Canva services are part of the picture.
Is Affinity really free?
The core Affinity app is free to download and use, but a free Canva account is required. Canva markets the app as free “forever”; that is the company’s stated positioning, not a promise that every connected service or future feature will always be free.

Keep the editor separate from its optional AI layer. Canva says Canva Premium subscribers get Canva AI features inside Affinity, including Generative Fill, Expand & Edit, and Remove Background. The free editor is not the same as a free Canva Premium subscription. Ars Technica’s coverage likewise distinguishes the free core application from subscription-associated AI tools.
Existing owners of Affinity Photo, Designer, or Publisher version 2 are a separate case: their older installations and licenses are not the same product as the new unified app. Do not uninstall an older version until you have backed up your work and verified that the new app handles your projects and production needs.

Affinity vs. Photoshop at a glance
| Need | Affinity | Photoshop |
|---|---|---|
| Core cost | Free app; Canva account required | Subscription-based |
| Mac and Windows | Available on both | Available on both |
| Photo editing and compositing | Strong raster toolkit | Industry-leading raster ecosystem |
| RAW editing | Supported | Integrated with Adobe’s photography tools |
| Vector and page layout | Vector and Layout studios are built in | Photoshop is not a direct Illustrator or InDesign replacement |
| PSD files | Supported, but complex documents need testing | Native format |
| AI features | Canva AI features are associated with Premium | Adobe’s AI tools are part of its own subscription ecosystem |
| Cataloging and plugins | May require other tools; compatibility varies | Broad Adobe and third-party ecosystem |
Format support is not identical to feature parity. Canva lists PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, IDML, and other formats among those Affinity supports, but that does not guarantee every layer effect, smart object, font, plugin result, or blend mode will survive an import and export unchanged.

What Affinity does well for Photoshop users
Photo editing, retouching, and compositing
The Pixel studio is the most natural starting point for a Photoshop user. Affinity offers layer-based editing, masks, blend modes, retouching, RAW development, compositing, live filters, batch processing, non-destructive adjustments, and smart selections. These are capabilities highlighted by Canva; they are not a claim that every operation behaves exactly like its Photoshop counterpart.

For individual images, composites, product graphics, posters, or other layer-based work, Affinity is a compelling no-subscription option. It can also export common image formats for delivery. If your work depends on a very specific Camera Raw process, Photoshop-only filter, or plugin, test that exact job rather than relying on a broad feature list.
Vector art and page design in the same app
Affinity’s unusual strength is the ability to move between Pixel, Vector, and Layout work areas in one application. That can simplify mixed-media tasks such as adding vector marks to a photo, designing a poster, assembling a brochure, or creating marketing materials with both images and typography. It may reduce the need to switch among several Adobe apps for some projects; it does not make the apps interchangeable in every advanced workflow.

Cross-platform projects
Because Affinity is available for macOS and Windows, it can suit a household, classroom, or small team using both platforms. Still, do not assume identical appearance or performance on every system. Fonts, file paths, color settings, tablet support, and graphics drivers can differ. Check Canva’s current download information for operating-system and hardware requirements, especially before installing on an older Mac or PC.
Where Photoshop remains the safer choice
- Adobe-centered production: Photoshop connects to Lightroom, Creative Cloud Libraries, Adobe Fonts, Adobe Stock, Bridge, and other Creative Cloud applications. Affinity does not reproduce that whole ecosystem.
- Plugins and automation: Photoshop has a long-established plugin, action, and script ecosystem. Some third-party tools may support Affinity, but Photoshop plugins and automation should not be presumed compatible or transferable.
- Complex PSD handoffs: Affinity can open and export PSD files, but complicated documents may render or behave differently. This matters when clients, agencies, or coworkers expect editable files back in Photoshop.
- Catalog and asset management: Affinity edits documents; it is not a full Lightroom-style photo catalog. If you organize large image libraries, you will likely need a separate asset-management tool. TechRadar’s review also notes the absence of built-in file-management and cataloging features.
- AI and collaboration requirements: Canva’s AI integration and Adobe’s AI features belong to separate service ecosystems. Compare the relevant plans and policies directly if generative tools or review workflows are essential; do not assume either product’s AI is included in the other’s free offering.
Print work needs its own proofing step, too. Confirm ICC profiles, CMYK settings, spot colors, transparency, and PDF export requirements with the intended printer or production house. A file opening successfully is not proof that it will reproduce correctly.

How to switch from Photoshop without risking your work
- Download the Mac or Windows version from Canva’s official Affinity page, then create or sign in to a Canva account if prompted.
- Open Affinity and start in the Pixel studio if photo editing is your main use.
- Make a copy of a representative PSD. Keep the original unchanged.
- Choose a file that includes the elements you rely on: text, masks, adjustment layers, clipping groups, smart objects, layer effects, blend modes, linked images, and any third-party filter results.
- Inspect the imported document at working size. Check font substitution, visibility and behavior of layers, masks, effects, color appearance, and whether anything has been flattened or altered.
- Save a separate native Affinity project, then export a test deliverable in the format required by your client, printer, website, or social platform. Reopen the export and check it.
- Repeat with your most complicated real production file before moving a whole library or ending an Adobe subscription.
If one effect does not transfer cleanly, keep the PSD intact. You can flatten or export only the affected element as TIFF, PNG, or PDF, recreate the effect in Affinity, or retain Photoshop for that legacy file. Install the correct fonts or agree on substitutes with collaborators. Do not flatten an entire project just to solve a problem on one layer unless you are willing to lose editability.
Who should choose Affinity?
| Your situation | Fit |
|---|---|
| Hobbyist, student, or freelancer who wants capable desktop editing without a recurring app subscription | Strong fit |
| Social-media designer or illustrator who mixes photos, vectors, and layouts | Strong fit |
| Photographer doing RAW development and retouching, but not needing an all-in-one catalog | Strong fit, possibly paired with a catalog app |
| Small print or marketing team considering a new workflow | Promising; test color, PDF, and handoff requirements |
| Photoshop-plugin-dependent studio or Adobe-heavy agency | Test carefully before switching |
| Photographer whose workflow centers on Lightroom catalogs | Use Affinity as an editor or complement, not an assumed Lightroom replacement |
| Team exchanging complex PSDs every day or administering Creative Cloud | Photoshop is the lower-risk choice unless compatibility is proven |
| User who needs Canva AI in Affinity | Check Canva Premium terms separately from the free editor |
Other alternatives, briefly
- GIMP is free and open source, with a strong raster-editing focus. It is a better fit if open-source licensing is the priority; it does not package the same integrated vector and layout studios.
- Photopea runs in a browser and is convenient for quick PSD edits without installing software. Affinity is the more natural choice for substantial desktop projects, particularly when offline work or large files matter.
- Pixelmator Pro is a Mac-focused photo and graphics editor. Affinity has the advantage if you also need Windows or built-in vector and page-layout work.
- Photoshop remains the established option for Adobe integrations, broad professional adoption, and workflows that depend on its native format and tooling.
- Canva is better suited to template-led, collaborative browser design. Affinity offers more granular desktop control over pixels, paths, layers, and page layouts; the products are connected, but not the same tool.
Verdict
Affinity is one of the strongest free Photoshop alternatives for Mac and Windows, especially if you want photo editing plus vector and layout tools in one desktop app. It can replace Photoshop for many individual editing and compositing jobs, and it may reduce the need for other design applications. Before committing, test your PSDs, plugins, fonts, print settings, and team handoffs. If your work depends on Adobe’s ecosystem or flawless Photoshop-specific compatibility, treat Affinity as a useful companion until your own files prove it can take over.
