AI Paintings Have Sold for Huge Sums. Can They Make Us Feel What Human Art Does?

AI paintings can move us, but knowing a machine made one can change how creative, meaningful, or emotionally powerful it feels.

Yes: an AI-generated image can make someone feel awe, sadness, beauty, or unease. But research suggests that people often feel less awe and empathy when they believe a work was made by AI. A high auction price shows that buyers valued a particular work; it cannot tell us whether viewers felt the same human connection they might feel with a painting made by a person.

In 2018, Christie’s sold Portrait of Edmond de Belamy, made by the French collective Obvious using a generative adversarial network, for $432,500—far above its estimate. In 2025, Christie’s held Augmented Intelligence, which it described as the first major-auction-house sale devoted exclusively to AI art. The sale totaled $728,784 and included works by artists such as Refik Anadol, Harold Cohen, Pindar Van Arman, Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst, Alexander Reben, and Claire Silver. Christie’s account of the 2018 sale and its 2025 sale announcement document real market interest. Neither settles what a viewer feels in front of the work.

That is the useful distinction: emotional response is not the same thing as empathy with an artist, and neither is measured by a price tag. An image can be moving while its maker—or the system that generated it—has no lived experience to communicate. A human-made painting can also leave a viewer cold. What changes with AI is often not just the image, but the story viewers believe about how it came to exist.

“AI painting” can mean several different processes

The phrase covers work with very different amounts and kinds of human involvement. A text-to-image user might enter a prompt, generate many candidates, and choose one. Another artist may write or adapt software, select data, build a generative system, curate its outputs, then edit, print, paint over, or install the result. A data-driven work might turn satellite imagery or environmental measurements into a changing visual composition. AI may also serve as a reference or sketching aid in a conventional painting process. And algorithmic art made with rules and code predates today’s image generators.

Those are not interchangeable practices. A one-prompt image and an artist-led installation built through sustained research may both use AI, but the human decisions, labor, intention, and concept behind them can be quite different. Calling every result “AI-created” risks making the software seem like the sole author while hiding the people who designed the process, chose the inputs and outputs, and determined how the work would be presented.

When considering a particular work, ask what the system did and what people did: Who wrote or modified the software? Who chose the training material or supplied the data? Who prompted, selected, edited, composited, fabricated, titled, and exhibited the result? The answer matters both to authorship and to the kind of meaning the work can carry.

Feeling something is not the same as feeling an artist’s experience

“Does it feel the same?” can refer to several different responses:

  • Sensory pleasure: enjoying the colors, composition, rhythm, or visual surprise.
  • Emotion: feeling sadness, tenderness, fear, nostalgia, or joy.
  • Awe: experiencing wonder or astonishment.
  • Empathy and connection: sensing another person’s experience, intention, or vulnerability in the work.
  • Intellectual or social meaning: becoming curious about the process, history, community, or circumstances around it.
  • Material response: noticing scale, brushwork, texture, irregularity, or the physical presence of a painted object.

An AI image can succeed at visual pleasure or trigger an emotion without offering the same sense of encounter with a person. A viewer may be moved by an image’s colors or symbols while feeling less connected once they learn that a machine generated it. That is not proof that the first reaction was false. It shows that the image and its perceived origin both shape the experience.

Nor must the maker feel the emotion a viewer experiences. People find meaning in natural patterns, accidents, anonymous objects, and works whose creators’ intentions are unknown. Composition and symbolism can evoke feeling on their own. But a painting can also be understood as a person’s attempt to communicate memory, values, or experience. A machine can generate an image that prompts emotion; that is different from the machine having feelings or a human life to disclose.

What studies say about AI art and emotion

Small and large experiments point in the same broad direction, though none can establish a universal ranking of human and AI art.

A 2023 study with 48 participants found that people reported emotions and perceived emotional intentions while viewing computer-generated abstract art, even when told the work came from a computer. The study also found stronger reported emotions for work actually made by people. It therefore supports both parts of the answer: computer-generated art can elicit feeling, but that response may not be as strong as the response to human-made work in the tested setting. Read the study.

A separate 2023 research program used four experiments with 1,708 participants. When works were labeled as AI-made rather than human-made, participants tended to rate them as less creative and show less preference and awe. Perceived creativity helped explain the difference, and the effect was stronger among people who saw creativity as uniquely human. Read the study.

More recent evidence points to a related effect on empathy. Across five preregistered studies involving 1,598 participants, researchers found that art believed to be AI-generated produced less awe and, in turn, weaker empathic effects than art believed to be human-created. The program included visual and literary art and different participant groups, including museum visitors. Read the research.

These results do not mean that every person prefers human work, or that AI images cannot be powerful. Attitudes toward AI, judgments about effort, and attention to a work’s emotional qualities can all affect responses. A 2026 study, for example, reported that favorable attitudes toward AI and greater perceived effort were associated with more favorable evaluations of AI-labeled work. That research complicates any simple claim that an AI label automatically makes art unappealing.

There are limits to what the experiments tell us. Studies may rely on online participants, a narrow selection of images, artificial labels, short viewing periods, or forced comparisons. Self-reported liking, awe, empathy, and perceived creativity are related but distinct measures; none alone captures long-term attachment, a visit to a gallery, or the experience of living with a painting. Findings establish a recurring provenance effect, not a rule that human art is always better.

The same image can feel different after a label changes

Imagine looking at a painting without any information about its maker. You find it beautiful or unsettling. Then you learn it was generated by AI. The pixels have not changed, but your response might. You may wonder whether the image expresses an intention, whether its composition involved skill, or whether the work is asking you to connect with anyone at all.

Research on AI labels suggests that this change is real: identical or closely matched images can receive different judgments depending on whether viewers think a human or AI made them. A 2026 study also found lower liking for identical AI-generated paintings when they were labeled AI-generated rather than human-created; its authors noted that forced side-by-side comparison can amplify the effect. That label effect is not simply a defect in the viewer. Art is more than visible form. Knowing that a painting arose from a particular memory, place, or struggle can change its meaning. So can knowing that a process relied on a generative system or on human selection and revision. Context can enrich an experience, or weaken it if it raises questions about effort, attribution, or trust.

People are not necessarily reliable at identifying AI art from appearance alone either. A 2024 study compared 50 human artworks with 50 DALL·E 2 images matched for style and composition, examining both preference and authorship judgments. A 2026 study of 406 U.S. adults used ten selected, unlabeled artworks—five AI-generated and five human-made—to investigate whether viewers assigned authorship correctly. The latter’s small, curated artwork set and U.S.-only sample limit how widely its findings can be generalized. Read the 2024 study and the 2026 study. The practical point is not that nobody can tell; it is that appearance alone may not reveal a work’s production history.

What does the price of AI art prove?

An auction price records what buyers were willing to pay for a particular work under particular conditions. It can reflect visual appeal, novelty, the artist or collective’s reputation, technical or historical significance, scarcity, exhibition context, speculation, or the status of owning an early landmark. In digital works, an NFT or other record may be part of the object’s sales history, but that does not by itself establish what rights a buyer receives.

Portrait of Edmond de Belamy became a widely publicized auction milestone. Christie’s 2025 Augmented Intelligence sale, which the auction house reported brought in $728,784, shows continued institutional interest in a range of AI-related practices. Christie’s also reported that 37% of registrants were new to the house and 48% of bidders were Millennials or Gen Z. Those figures describe that sale, not the market for all AI images. The works were selected for a curated auction and associated with named artists and practices; their results do not make anonymous prompt outputs valuable, nor do they show that viewers felt the same emotion they feel before a human painting.

Price, artistic importance, and emotional force can overlap, but they are not the same measure. A buyer might value a work as a historical first or as an investment in a new medium without finding it deeply moving. Conversely, a modestly priced print—or an image that cannot be bought at all—can matter profoundly to its viewer.

Authorship, effort, and the data behind the image

Calling an AI system the artist can obscure the chain of human decisions behind its output. People design models, gather or select data, write code, prompt, reject, curate, edit, fabricate, and frame works for audiences. Research on credit and responsibility has noted that people can anthropomorphize AI systems and overlook the humans who created or presented them. Read the study.

The data matters as well as the visible result. Viewers may care whether an artist trained a model on their own work, whether the dataset was disclosed, or whether creators’ work was used without permission. Those questions can affect trust and moral judgment even when the image looks unchanged. A 2025 study found that contextual information about AI could reduce moral acceptability and aesthetic appeal in some situations, including when AI art was associated with financial incentives or claims to art status. Training-data ethics, contracts, and copyright are not one question with a single answer: they depend on jurisdiction, dataset, model, and use. It is better to ask what is known about a specific work’s process than to label all AI art either harmless or stolen. A 2025 review of aesthetic appreciation likewise emphasizes that responses can involve both immediate pleasure and more deliberate interpretation, while provenance affects judgments of creativity and authenticity. Read the review.

Does printing an AI image on canvas make it feel more human?

A canvas can add scale, texture, permanence, and the presence of a physical object. Brushwork, surface irregularities, and evidence of material handling can make a viewer more attentive to labor and process. But a physical canvas does not prove that a person painted the image: an AI-generated image can be printed, transferred, manually overpainted, or built into a complex installation.

It helps to separate what you are responding to: the image itself, the physical object, the artist’s process, the story behind it, or the setting in which you encounter it. Those layers can reinforce one another, but they need not. An AI-derived image that a human has materially transformed may carry a different kind of presence from an unaltered print, even if both began with generated pixels.

A practical way to look at—or buy—AI-related art

When viewing a work, try asking these questions before deciding whether it moves you:

  1. What do I feel when I look at the image, before I know its origin?
  2. What changes when I learn how it was made?
  3. Am I responding to the image, the process, the artist’s story, or the novelty of AI?
  4. Which human decisions shaped the work, and are they clearly disclosed?
  5. Would I still value it if the AI label were not part of its appeal?

If you are buying, look beyond the phrase “AI art.” Ask for a clear account of the artist’s role, the tools and process used, and any relevant information about the data. Check whether the work is unique or part of an edition, how the edition is numbered, what physical medium and production quality you are buying, and what provenance or certificate accompanies it. For a digital work, distinguish ownership of a file or token from copyright, ownership of a physical object, or permission to reproduce it; these are not automatically the same thing.

Also consider whether the work has a concept beyond the fact that AI was involved. If you are buying for emotional connection, cultural significance, decoration, or curiosity about a medium, be clear with yourself which matters most. If you are buying for potential resale, remember that one headline auction result does not guarantee a liquid market or future return.

So, can AI paintings make us feel what human art does?

They can make us feel many of the same things. The evidence does not support the claim that AI art is inherently emotionless, and a viewer’s reaction can be genuine even when the image came from a machine. But knowing or believing that AI made it often changes judgments of creativity, awe, authenticity, and empathy. Human-made art can offer an additional sense of contact with someone’s intention, limitations, memory, or lived experience—something an image generator cannot claim as its own experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That difference is not a verdict that every human painting is moving or every AI work is empty. It is a reason to ask what, exactly, is moving us: the image, the maker, the process, or the relationship we imagine between them.
