A .kra file is Krita’s native, editable document format. Open it with Krita to work with its supported layers and project information; export a PNG, JPEG, or other delivery format when someone only needs a finished image. Keep the KRA as your working master: an exported image generally will not preserve the project’s editable structure.
What is a KRA file?
A KRA file is a document made by Krita, the free, open-source digital painting application. It stores artwork as a Krita project, including editable layers and other document information supported by Krita. It is closer to a layered working file such as a PSD than to a finished PNG or JPEG, though those formats are not interchangeable.

You may see the format described as “Krita Raster Archive.” The most useful, precise description for users is simply Krita’s native document format; Krita’s manual describes it as its internal file format rather than relying on a formal expansion of the initials. Krita’s file-format documentation explains the format and its contents.
A KRA document can also contain a rendered composite named mergedimage.png. This is a flattened view of the visible canvas, not a substitute for the original layer data. If the project is damaged, that image may be useful as a fallback, but it cannot restore the original editable layers.

How to open a KRA file
- Install Krita from its official download page, choosing the package for your operating system. The page’s version labels and package availability can change, so check it for the current stable download.
- Launch Krita and choose File → Open.
- Select the
.krafile. Check that the canvas and layer panel appear as expected.
Double-clicking may work if your computer has associated .kra files with Krita, but that association is not guaranteed. If it does not open, start Krita first and use File → Open. You can set Krita as the default app for the extension through your operating system’s “Open with” or file-association controls; the exact labels vary.
If Krita reports an error, first make a copy of the file. Check that its actual extension is .kra—not .kra~, .krz, or a misleading name such as painting.kra.zip—and consider whether a download, transfer, or cloud sync may have stopped before completion. If the file was created in a newer release, try the version that created it or a current supported Krita release.

Keep the KRA as your editable master
Save the project in Krita as a .kra file if you expect to continue editing it. Layers, masks, groups, and other project-specific information may not survive export to a general image format. Krita warns that saving in other formats can lose features and may offer to keep a KRA copy. See Krita’s saving and autosave guidance.

A reliable handoff is to keep a named KRA master, make a deliberate backup, and export a separate file for viewing or delivery. For example, keep poster.kra and export poster.png. Review the exported file before sending it, especially if transparency, color appearance, or exact dimensions matter.
How to export a KRA to PNG, JPEG, PSD, or another format
In Krita, open the project and choose File → Export (menu wording can vary slightly by release). Give the export a new filename and choose the required format. This creates a delivery copy; it does not turn the exported file into an equivalent editable KRA project.

Before delivery, open the exported file in an image viewer or the recipient’s target application. Check the canvas dimensions, transparency or background, visible layers, color appearance, and image quality. If another artist needs to continue editing, ask what format and Krita version they use; provide the KRA when appropriate, and include a flattened preview for quick reference.

Can you open a KRA file without Krita?
Usually not as a fully editable document. Krita’s documentation says most other applications cannot open the complete KRA format. Because KRA is ZIP-based, an archive utility may be able to inspect it and extract mergedimage.png, but that yields only a flattened composite where available—not usable Krita layers. Krita documents this archive structure.
For emergency inspection, work on a duplicate: rename the copy’s extension from .kra to .zip, open it with a ZIP utility, and look for mergedimage.png. Renaming is not conversion: it does not make the project a PNG, JPEG, or generally supported graphics file. To create a shareable image properly, open the document in Krita and export it.
How to recover a damaged or missing KRA project
Do not keep editing or repairing the only copy. Preserve the original, then work through these recovery options:

- Make a duplicate. Keep the damaged original untouched before renaming, extracting, or attempting archive repair.
- Look for a backup. A normal backup may sit beside the project and end in a tilde, such as
drawing.kra~. On a copy, rename it so the filename ends in.kra, then try opening it in Krita. - Check for autosaves. Autosave names can resemble
.krita-12549-document_1-autosave.kra. Their location depends on settings and the system; check Krita’s configured autosave location and relevant temporary or user folders. Krita’s autosave documentation describes backup and autosave behavior. - Inspect a copy as an archive. If the project will not open, duplicate it, rename the duplicate to end in
.zip, and see whether an archive utility can extractmergedimage.png. Treat this as recovery of a flattened reference, not restoration of the full project. - Try archive repair only on duplicates. Krita’s FAQ describes ZIP repair approaches, including these Linux examples:
mv file.kra file_copy.zip
zip -F file_copy.zip --out file_new1.zip
unzip file_new1.zipIf that attempt fails, the FAQ also describes trying zip -FF on another copy. These are Linux command examples, not universal instructions; ZIP utilities and commands differ across operating systems. Repair may fail, and a recovered archive may still be incomplete.
KRA and KRZ: what is the difference?
.krz is a related Krita format that omits mergedimage.png and always uses compression. It can reduce storage use, but it is less suitable if a workflow relies on that embedded flattened image. Choose it only when the size trade-off is useful and your workflow is compatible; it is not a universally supported replacement for KRA. Krita notes that compression can reduce file size while making saving take longer. See the format notes.
Large files and compatibility
KRA uses ZIP-style archive handling, and Krita has documented Zip64 support for files beyond the traditional 4 GiB ZIP limit. Older Krita versions may not load Zip64 files, so behavior depends on the version involved. Krita’s Zip64 announcement discusses that compatibility caveat.

If an unusually large project will not open, try the Krita version that created it and a current supported release, and make sure the device has adequate free space for temporary files and exports. Avoid working directly from an unreliable removable drive or an interrupted network share. Keep backups rather than relying on one copy of a large project.
Other useful KRA details
KRA documents can also serve as the basis for reusable Krita templates. Krita’s document workflow includes File → Create Template from Image…; a template can retain document properties and layer content for recurring work. See the template documentation.
On desktop systems, use Krita for the most reliable full-document workflow. Krita’s official download page lists platform packages and distribution options, but availability and interface details vary by operating system and release. For a phone, tablet, or Chromebook, check the current official package or app listing for that device rather than assuming every platform handles KRA identically.
